Kaixin I'm actually like pretttty early in Mandarin studies, but the book and app I've been using seem to use gaoxing as happy/excited. Is there a big difference, or just synonyms? :)

The "kai" part rhymes with "guy." The "xin" part is very hard to write out how it's pronounced. The closest way to write out it's pronunciation is "sshin," but I'm sure that doesn't help any.
My username means "happy" in Chinese. It's actually the name I picked out when I started to study Mandarin, and now it's one of my online aliases.

Maybe "sheen" would work? Not exactly it but probably easier to understand pronunciation wise?

Fair point on the vowel, but I think it might be difficult to describe how pinyin x translates to English sh, since they don't sound quite the same. I love the sound of Mandarin and tend to pick up on languages easier than some, but I know the "front mouth" consonants/consonant clusters trip some people up :0

Im also learning mandarin (haven't been learning very long but i have a pretty good grasp of the sounds) but yeah I agree, the way the x translates is really hard to describe.

It's so much fun though! Having dabbled in a few other languages (Spanish and German and Japanese mostly) I have to say Mandarin is my favorite to learn. I love it :)
If you wanted to talk more we should probably dm so we're not clogging the thread up though ^^;;

Hawnt-all-oh-jee.
This thread is super helpful. I think I mess up on names pretty often.
