In my lore, there are three reasons why a dragon might undergo an Exaltation ceremony.

The first, and most common reason (and this is what I imagine happens to my dragons unless specified) is that they wish to leave their clan and solely serve the deity they are exalted to. This involves leaving everyone and everything behind, and it's generally permanent. Serving the deity can include anything as long as it's for the betterment of the Flight as a whole, from fighting on the front lines, to growing food, helping lost travelers and escorting exalted dragons to where the deity resides (the last two jobs are ones that specific dragon's I've exalted do in lore). But it's not death, even though the dragons serving the deities can and do die from various causes, as exalted dragons often live longer than average lives because they have access to very powerful magic.

The second reason is that the dragon has died. In my clan, those that have died undergo a ceremonial exaltation that is supposed to send their spirit to reside with the deity and watch over the Flight. Without this ceremony it is believed that the dragon will be unable to move on to the afterlife. Generally it is done before the body is buried, but if there is no body then it is done on an item that was important to the deceased. While I haven't had anyone canonically die in my lair, in my lore this is not an uncommon occurrence as everyone dies eventually.

The third (and most rare) reason is because the dragon is fatally ill or injured and the magic of the deity/their acolytes are the only ones that can save them. This is usually an emergency exaltation, and not one undertaken lightly due to exaltation being permanent (with few exceptions). Generally dragons will discuss with the leader or those they are close to whether or not they would want to be exalted in this situation, or if the dragon can still talk they are asked. But still, this is a very uncommon occurrence.

So yeah, for me exaltation is simply when a dragon leaves the clan to serve their deity permanently.

As my lore lair is a museum/gallery, I figure every fodder dragon that passes through is just a patron of the museum. The treasure they leave behind was the fee they paid to get in/a donation they made, and once they leave they go back to whatever they were doing in their lives. It just happens to be a life not in my nor any other player's lair.

Dragons born in my lair or former "permas" that get exalted can be any number of things, but they're likely either
>dead
>missing
>on a really long quest (where they probably died or went missing)
>went and found lives outside my lair
>I just got sick of how they looked and the dragon is still in my lore, I'm just trying to find a replacement

For fodder dergs, it means they're off to see the world - for my lore dergs, they're dead

"Exalted" is the nice word older dragons use to tell hatchlings about dragons who's bodies are missing or have been confirmed dead. Considering plenty of them believe the Plaguebringer has long since abandoned them and have instead adopted new gods of their own, going to serve the deities is an idea shared only by a chunk of the tribe's residents.

Basically, if you're "exalted" there's at least one dragon watching the sky and grieving.

I know this thread is old, but exalting can mean a lot for my lair. It can mean fighting for the ice warden if they are leveled up, leaving to live as rouge dragons, something the king and queen encourage for population control, and death if they are hatchlings (though I also imagine the Ice Warden being kind enough not to allow hatchlings into battle... he waits until they grow up. haha)

they just leave the scope of my lore. some of them might still be living in one of my lore cities. who knows.

basically it’s, uh… do you remember every person you pass in a crowd? no? exalted dragons (and fodder) are just random dragons you might see once or twice like that.
