Alright, I haven't really seen anything like this so far, and I have a mighty need right now for scientific [s]lore[/s] explanations for Sornieth weather patterns. As a scientist of the Windswept Plateau, I must find out! What are the wind patterns for Sornieth? If I wanted to fly across the continent, what would be the best way to do it? Where are storms more likely to form? What weather patterns can be expected in each area during different seasons? I must know!!!
Links: Prevailing Winds (General) The Vortex Weather in Ice Weather in Fire & Lightning Weather in Light & Water Weather in Plague & Arcane Weather on the Equator - North Shadow Weather in Nature Weather in Earth Pinglist: @typoAdventure @DarkWolf133 @CaliCa1 @starshiny @Everburn @Ozprey @SylphOfHeart @KairinRose @autumnbee @Zeatehk @Tamarin21 @FusionBoltzGX @Crimsonpizza @Empedocles @Oranitha @

Prevailing Winds - General

Map of Prevailing Winds:
Prevailing-Winds-World-Map.png

There are three major sets of prevailing winds in Sornieth. There may be more, since we don't actually know how big the world is and we haven't explored the world's oceans yet. From southernmost to northernmost, these prevailing winds are:

The first is Icewarden's Teeth, the southernmost of the prevailing winds. It blows from east to west, bringing long, cold blizzards to the Southern Icefield. It is also the fastest prevailing wind, averaging about 15 mph, with gusts upwards of 60 mph.

The second is the Western Trade Wind, blowing from west to east, which interacts with the Icewarden's teeth to perpetuate the Vortex. The Western Trade Wind brings a bit of moisture to the Sunbeam Ruins from the Sea of a Thousand Currents and rain to the Windswept Plateau from the Wind-Arcane bay. This windstream is more gentle, averaging about 11 mph.

The third is the Northern Windstream, which is nearly identical to the Western Trade Wind, only it occurs over Dragonhome and the Viridian Labyrinth. These two westerly winds angle toward each other, creating a convergence zone over the equator. (Sidenote: Although we are not sure where the equator lies, judging from average flight temperatures and alike biomes, our best guess is that the equator sits on the southern border of both Dragonhome and the Viridian Labyrinth, cutting across the top of Plague and Shadow.)

Our Vortex functions as a gear, forcing the Icewarden's teeth and the Western Trade Winds apart. Both winds feed into it, and it feeds into them in return, in a self-perpetuating cycle.
Theoretically, there is another Vortex in the far north, possibly on the other side of the planet, holding back a northerly Icewarden's teeth. The presence of storms on the northern coastline of Dragonhome, the Viridian Labyrinth, and the Starfall Isles seem to indicate this, as they are a calmer mirror to the volatile storms experienced by the Ashfall Waste and Shifting Expanse. Read more about the Vortex here.

There are also doldrums to watch out for: to the immediate east and west of the Vortex, off the western coast of the Shifting Expanse and the Sunbeam Ruins.
There is a line of equatorial doldrums formed where the two northern windstreams merge. This includes the Observatory, the border between the Scarred Wasteland and Dragonhome, northern half of the Tangled Wood, and the channel between the Sunbeam Ruins and the Viridian Labyrinth.
Travelers flying through these passages should be wary of outflying the wind beneath their wings and crashing due to over exhaustion.

The Vortex The Vortex spins clockwise, now. It holds apart the Icebringer's Teeth to the south and the Western Trade Winds to the north. Both winds feed into it. The winds of this ever-present storm are still somewhat of a mystery. What keeps it going? We have two theories, but neither of them fit exactly. The first supposes that such a massive storm must function like a gear, and gusts of wind bouncing off prevailing winds in the opposite direction only serve to perpetuate the clockwise motion. In this case, the inner eye of the storm is formed by cold air moving downward. If this theory is true, it should hold that the outermost winds are the fastest, as they are the ones being hit hardest by the prevailing winds. (Research link for the curious.) The second theory is that the prevailing winds feed into the Vortex, instead of bouncing off it. When the two prevailing winds meet, they create a funnel, which then bends upright and forms the outer wall of the Vortex, essentially the most massive tornado that has ever been seen. The inner eye of the storm consists of warmer air shooting upward. (Another few research links for the curious.) Weather in the Windswept Plateau The majority of weather in the Windswept Plateau comes from the Vortex. Some dragons live in balloon cities which circle the Vortex - it takes about a week for a balloon-bound clan to travel around the rim of the Vortex, depending on the season. There are often storms that cut across the steppes, but they are brief and minor. In summer, it is likely a calm westerly wind will bring gentle rains, warm fronts, and magic pollen from the Starwood Strand. Summers are likely to be warm and wet. In winter, it is likely that the Icewarden's Teeth brings a dry, cold, cutting wind that smells like brimstone and sulfur. Storms in winter are more likely to have dark smoke clouds, lightning, and far less precipitation.
