Huh, so Emperors *do* have a consciousness.. it’s just very simple. Most of the memory has been wiped (they described buildings as “pathetic stone structures”), besides the memory of each other. They seem to refer a lot to their hatchling days..
I wonder if the middle head has the most intelligence. It kinda seemed that way, considering the other heads were so.. clumsy, and just cared about food.
Lesson of the story? Emperors are actually gigantic apocalypse hatchlings.

Emperors are apex predators that don't recognize what dragons are. I'm possibly too excited to learn they can think and feel, rather than being absolutely mindless like the Imperial Encyclopedia entry stated. At least, this one particular Emperor has at least one semi-working mind in it. They seem to recognize the other two parts of them as 'siblings'. Though I have to wonder if they're possibly confused on even that part? Their memories of their own past are a bit foggy, can't really blame them though, being undead and all.
Also remember that the entry could be from the perspective of dragons. I know that it's more meta-data-y then that, but... even though the Emperor had a "mind" it was a simple mind (likely from a brain that was damaged/rotting).
It could be that each head perceives the world very differently too, from the reactions the middle head suggested the other two were acting out. One was more angry, the other kinda of... just... zombie like. Nom nom, flop-around.
From what the last line of the story said tells me they aren't related:
Behind them, death screamed, releasing wind, light, and flame skyward.
Also:
My brother lowered his head and let loose glorious streams of fire from his mouth. The flames curled and crackled, burning intricate patterns into the dry grasses around us.

@/Drakenhart (hope you don't mind the ping)
The entry is very much from the perspective of one head, at least until it switches to third-person on Gleam and Umbrann. Each head could very well be at different stages in the uh, mind-rotting process. I don't think the one we got the perspective of was too simple, since they were able to at the very least imagine a sibling connection (hard to say if those dragons really were siblings, since they're different elements), and attempted to recall memories.
But the other two could fit into the theory of rotted brains, if the brother is all anger and hunger, while the sister is barely there, flopping and groaning. Either way, as someone who really likes Emperor lore, this has me very excited.
Same!! :) lol
i think I've seen far too many posts in other threads claiming that "the entry is wrong" and "look they aren't mindless".... etc etc ect... ^.^

I'm curious now....has staff elaborated at all on the nature of emperors in a words on the wind/Q and A? All I know of emperors is the Imperial encyclopedia page and now today's insight. which is probably all there is. just wondering.
Yes, they have! I've only gone through about half of what staff has written in Q&As, Words on the Wind, etc, but here's everything I've found regarding emperors so far.
Emperors are a fright to Beastclans and dragonkind alike. Though it is more likely to encounter an Emperor in a battle between dragons, the Beastclans know to avoid gatherings of war-ready Imperials.
However, it should be noted that the creation of an Emperor is a relatively rare event. Most Beastclans know of them only through cautionary tales and not through first-hand experience.

Emperor dragons are a monstrous disaster spawned from deceased Imperial dragons. They are not a breed capable of living among other dragons, frequently use multiple elements, are not technically alive, would not be tolerated by the deities, and are not able to reproduce. Saying they are not user-friendly is putting it lightly!

What if a guardian had an imperial charge, but then that imperial died and became an Emperor? Would that guardian still have that need to protect them and die for them, or would that instinct go away?
This is hypothetical, but it's pretty safe to say that in the event that an emperor were created it would have taken on such a different form and aura that the most Guardians would no longer recognize it as their charge.
Thankfully, there are many contingencies in place within dragon society to prevent this, and emperors are exceedingly rare!
it was so short that you just gave up. me too.
anyways- CONFIRMED EMPEROR! and i'll state what i said in another thread:
its a bit weird how calm the emperor is acting honestly, while everyone else in an outside view is terrified of them, somehow causing havoc. perhaps they simply don't know that they're dead, or even an emperor even.
i've seen people state that the prey was other dergs, and it's very likely they are.
very, very cruel, and a bit interesting.
Prey flushed to the sky when they saw their doom. I shook my wings, torn and twisted; I couldn’t pursue. No matter. There was still plenty of prey frozen in place, too afraid to even move. My sister’s low hung head snapped up a meal, greedily swallowing the morsel before rooting for more. Small forms fled into unimpressive structures built for their diminutive size. I easily knocked over the flimsy architecture, and sifted through the rubble with my snout until I found my quarry, warmth filling my mouth as I bit down with a sigh.
I had to read this a second time to comprehend what was going on.
EMPERORS. EAT. DRAGONS.
“No time for that either! We’re going straight to the Beacon of the Radiant Eye.”
Lightweaver is approachable?

Skogur It doesn't seem like the emperor was aware of the world in the same way you and I are. It almost seemed like it didn't realize what it was and that what it was doing was bad.
