The light was grey and pale at the first, though by the time we were aboard the longboat the sky was painted a violent and fiery red. The light cast a pinkish hue over the wreck as we approached it yet again, the silent ship lent false vitality by this temporary coat of colour. In the morning light, her timbers were more hearty red-brown than deathly silver, and her tattered sails luffed weakly in the breeze, one could almost imagine them bellying out, filled with wind as the great ship cut through waves and seafoam, her banners flying behind her as she went. It was an odd moment, that image seating itself in my mind as I watched the ship while Beaufort and Laurentia pulled at their oars. A moment which later each member of the crew would confide that they had shared. As ever, silence descended upon our company as we approached the stricken vessel, the very ocean growing quiet in respect for the souls lost aboard this ship. As we clambered up her side and over, this time hauling such equipment as to ensconce ourselves in the hold for a span of days, we spoke quietly amongst ourselves of the sight we had beheld, of the treasure, and increasingly of the warmth and comfort of our landward homes. Laurentia, more bold and fearless than I had expected her to be, went fore as we reached the gun deck, intent on seeing if she could set the ancient galley to rights. She insisted that she needed no escort, that the three of us should put our minds at ease and our hands to the work of establishing our encampment. The work did not take long; the hold of this old galleon is generous and deep, and the landing before the doorway proved more than large enough for us to construct the few things we needed to make ready. Whipwillow laid out her weapons: a startlingly extensive collection of blades, all of which gleamed wickedly in the lamplight. Beaufort erected a modest desk, complete with writing tools, more than one gleaming compass, and his field journal and annotated charts. I set aside a space for Laurentia and her belongings: lanterns, already lit and lending their warm and cheerful light to our camp; several books; and a modest collection of fighting knives that I cannot believe she truly knows how to use, though Whipwillow seemed to approve when I unpacked them. My own provisions I had kept deliberately meagre: I need little more than my hat; this logbook; the comb my father carved from Mamertee bone for my mother when I was aught but a lad; and the pocket knife that has seen me through many years of adventure. By the time Laurentia returned from her (regrettably, unsuccessful) sojourn, Beaufort had slithered deep into the hold, and had been calling out remarks regarding a large golden statue he had found but could not move. All the while his observations were accompanied by the measured, rhythmic whisper of Whipwillow’s whetstone against her various blades. Suddenly, there came a yelp and a cacophonous crash of many pieces of metal from within the hold - I put it down to Beaufort finally dislodging the statue which had so vexed him and thought little of it. Laurentia, however, was off like a shot, her book falling from her lap as she ran to assist Beaufort. Whipwillow’s whetstone ceased, her large, colourless eyes reflecting firelight as she stared after our two comrades, frozen in place. “Is all well in there?” I called after some moments, rising from where I’d reclined by the lantern. There was no answer, and Whipwillow was through the door before I could even pick up my sword, the little Fae bristling with a veritable armoury of steel. The sight that awaited me amongst the hoard stood every hair in my coat on end, a chill setting in my stomach that sought to undermine my very ability to reason. Beaufort and Laurentia both were held- pinned against the belly of the ship- by great slavering shadows. Their forms I could not make out, so inky-black were the shadows they were shrouded in. They seemed impervious to light, for as Whipwillow and I surged forward to aid our friends, the lantern I carried did no more to illuminate the fiends. Something in my soul told me they had been dragons, once, though now I saw only shifting ephemeral forms that seemed intent on harming my crewmembers. The wights released the two as Whipwillow and I fell upon them with our weapons raised - I cried out for our unarmed comrades to flee as I saw Whipwillow’s blade pass cleanly through her spectre, harming it not at all; and as I felt the bite of some deathly-cold fang upon my shoulder. The intervening moments are a blur; I fought tooth and claw against my wight, sword forgotten in the chaos. Beaufort, weaponless, was forced to flee. Whipwillow lived up to her moniker, stabbing furiously at the shadow that harried her. Though despite her valiant efforts, we each were forced to give ground. Back and back until we had reached our encampment. And suddenly, with a clap as the door we had dismantled, once again whole, snapped shut with a startling air of finality. I stared dumbly at it for a few moments, wondering why Whipwillow - though perhaps I should call her Stabby- fell upon the timbers with as much fury as she had assaulted the… ghost. “Laurentia is still inside!” She hissed, her pale eyes now alight with their own furious flame. SHIP'S LOG, DAY THE FIFTH; ++++++++++++++++++++++++++
peril and blood

33560339p.png ++++
This day began with foreboding weather: yesterday’s strong nor’westerly gale persisting through the night and morning. We departed the Frosty Fortune as the first blush of sunrise gathered upon the horizon.
