It sat just across from your bed, somehow always in view no matter how dark it became. You stared at it, transfixed, curiosity wracking your brain as you tried to guess at the contents. You could open it, if you really wanted. And yet… [i] “Open that when you have need of it, Strange One. You’ll know when.” [/i] No. Now was not that time. You turned away from it, hoping that the old adage “out of sight, out of mind” would lend itself some credence. It didn’t. It seemed the universe was as steadfast on that box as you were. You closed your eyes and attempted sleep or something similar. Had you been more conscious of it, you’d have been surprised as to how easily you were carried away into the land of dreams. [i]You stood in the center of a round room. Braziers filled with softly glowing coals lit the perimeter, each hanging from one of six stone columns. There was movement behind these columns, flickering shapes in your peripheral that melted away when you tried to face them head on. You were not supposed to be here. “Hello?” You called to the emptiness. The shapes began to flicker with more frequency, and you instinctively took a step back. You had a sneaking suspicion you shouldn’t have done that. Something about sound felt unnatural here. Despite this, you found your lips moving of their own accord, “I want to speak to The Past.” Stillness. You could scarcely register the sound of your own breathing. Then-- “Strange One.” The voice was familiar. You turned your head, trying to pinpoint the source, but only the room and its shapes greeted you. “Hecate?” The name slipped so easily from your lips it was like second nature. You could almost hear the voice smiling in its response, a sensation you’d never quite had the right words for. “Strange One, you have to hurry. Follow me, do not be afraid. This world was never meant for your kind.” “This world?” “All will be explained, Strange One. You have to leave now. Follow the door.” “But there is no door!” You cried out. Your echo told you you were alone. You turned, a vague hissing starting in the leftmost side of the room and traveling until it encircled you caught your attention very quickly. The flickering was more constant now, the shapes not bothering to hide when you faced them head on. Faces, twisted, misshapen and monstrous lurked in the shadows. You’d never been afraid of them before. You were now. The door. You had to find the door. You turned in a circle, trying desperately to find something amongst the amalgam that ringed the chamber. As you completed it, a clattering noise caught your attention. You looked to your feet. The box. You picked it up and the shadows escalated into a frenzied shriek. You opened the box, a warm, comforting light washing over you. The shadows pounced. Your brain told you to move. You followed the instinct, plunging your right paw into the box, surprised to find it not only fit but had room for much more. This would be a killer story later. Just as the shadows descended, you grinned and looked at the nearest one, “Anything can be a door.” and plunged the rest of yourself inside. [/i] You awoke with a start. What passed for noon in the Forum of the Obscured Crescent cast its vague glow on the entrance to your lodgings. The box sat at your side, unopened. Had it all been just a dream? It felt...so real. You reached for the box, pulling it to you. A note stuck to the side fell off with the motion. Had that always been there? You raised it, squinting to read in the semi-darkness. There are more answers to find. -Hecate[/i][/size][/center] [color=#591394]You opened the box. The answers were now, the time and place was now. No more waiting, no more cryptic half memories. Two things dawned on you at once. First: Hecate knew. She remembered everything, and second--[i]you did to.[/i] You looked at the content of the box and knew. Six symbols of power, six deities. You closed the lid and rushed out, ready to look for them each in turn. It didn’t take long. In the center of the plot of land that the Mystix called their lair sat the six deities, five in a row and one out front. She was smiling beneath that mask, you just knew it. “So, do you have the answers, Strange One?” She asked as you approached. You nodded. “I know who you are.” “Name us.” She moved out of the way. You went first to the metallic Guardian with her beautiful, shimmering runes. For her you took the full moon flanked by two crescent moons from your box. It was made of a cold metal and inlaid with diamonds and sapphires that glittered even without the light to justify doing so. You levied your gaze with hers, “Selene.” Next to the red Spiral with his striking eyes and beautiful silks. For him you took out a shape you didn’t recognize, a sort of V shape that was rounded and had a curved, pointed line through it. It was made of gold and was quite heavy. You handed it off to him and he clasped it to his chest, a warm smile spreading across his features, “Khonsu.” Next was the Fae, doing her best to stay still. Her excitement was contagious, and you grinned as you pulled out an A, curved to look like a bow. You bowed your head, “Artemis.” and she snatched it from you, a joyful laugh bubbling from her chest before she could stop it. You broke into a grin, “Thank you for the forest tour, my lady.” She laughed again and waved you on, turning the symbol over and over in her claws. The Nocturne waited expectantly, the ghost of a smile on his maw. You pulled an ibis from the box made of gold and sapphire, handing it over to him. “Thoth.” He took it gently, gazing fondly at the symbol. Almost finished. Finally you turned, taking the only symbol left from the box. It looked like a circular maze and was made of a cool, dark metal. You handed it to the Tundra who waited to patiently. “Thank you, Hecate.” “We all need guidance sometimes, Strange One. Thank you for being so receptive.” She took it, and all at once a light began to glow, softly at first but with increasing intensity. It centered around the dragons--no, the deities. You took a step back as if being caught in the glow meant you would go with them. One by one they began to wink out until only Hecate remained. “You knew.” “I knew.” “You saved me.” She removed the mask, the face of a creature you were unfamiliar with staring back. She looked like a beast but showed no animal qualities, just a bipedal creature with hair and skin and a long, flowing black gown. She smiled. “I will always save you, Strange One. In this life,” she waved her hand and the world around you bent. There were ten of her and ten of...you but somehow totally different, all in the same exact position, all with the same confused expression. In one you were a male blue Fae with goggles, another a rather mischievous looking male Spiral hiding beneath an invisibility cloak with a Shadow emblem shining proudly atop it. In still another a beautiful purple Guardian stood proud if still baffled by the realities around her. You looked to her again. “How--” “Answers always come in time.” She reached out, cupping your face gently. You could see tears in her beautiful silver eyes. “Until we meet again, Strange One.” She pulled her hands away and a weight settled about your neck. You looked down. A necklace, silver, with her symbol attached. You glanced back to thank the goddess but were met only with her light winking out. She was gone. The puzzle was solved. You were alone. You smiled and clutched the necklace. No. You were never alone.
