The phenomenon of birthstone wyrms has only recently begun to be dissected and understood. While they have been found in all corners of Sornieth, their origins remain a mystery. There are few known truths:
 • a crystal hoarding dragon may bring home a crystal for their collection, only to have it hatch
 • if dragons lay their nests in a crystallized area, normal eggs have a small chance to not only absorb the element but the properties of the crystals around them

Nests in such locations such as the Crystal Pools have a higher chance of producing birthstone nests and hatchlings but there is no guarantee. It is more likely that an entire nest will be crystallized, including the immediate surrounding area. These usually occur overnight and are almost always shocking to the expecting parents. Though a few intrepid (or unscrupulous) explorers may lay nests specifically in an attempt to encourage crystalization of their offspring - it's unclear if this is considered genetic manipulation at a scientific or arcane level, and thus if it goes against dragonkind ethics.

Physiology/Observations Gene Analysis- Crystal- Considered the epitome of the crystalization process, Crystal primary dragons are revered in the Birthstone Wyrm society. Their hides are the strongest, nearly impossible to hurt - but at the same time, they seem emotionless in all regards. Unable to feel pain, but also unable to feel joy. They form alliances more than friendships, partnerships rather than lovers. Their range of emotion is extremely limited, and this researcher believes that builds a better soldier or assassin, as all emotion is removed - including fear. Metallic- This variant of wyrm thrives on order and schedules, always knowing what is to come next. Some researchers into the subspecies go so far as to say they display precognitive abilities, and indeed studies have suggested a slight ability to observe future scenerios could be considered fact. This psychic foresight suggests they are incorrigible cheats at poker. Wasp- The most emotional range of Birthstone Wyrms, Wasp primary dragons are often artists or curators of incredible natural museums. They are considered the most wild and untamed, enjoying a natural freedom just on the cusp of dragon society. Peculiarly, there is rarely a single Wasp dragon found; they instead prefer to exist in pairs or small groups, behaving almost on instinct the larger their Collection becomes. Fewer Wasps lead to more individual behaviours - a larger Collection sees them behaving in patterns found in swarms of insects or large nests of birds. This variant brings with it a haughty nature without fail - the dragon knows it is superior to other winged variants, and it expects its authority to be valued, respected and obeyed. It is worth mentioning that Birthstone Wyrms use a minimalist form of decoration within their lair- often opting for stark lines and contrasting colour schemes when there is natural decoration brought in. Their nests, as stated previously in this document, are always crystallized- gemstones and lightning glass mar the nesting grounds, and oft times the eggs are so well camouflaged that upon preliminary inspection there seems to be no eggs present at all. Gene Analysis-
Crystal-
Considered the epitome of the crystalization process, Crystal primary dragons are revered in the Birthstone Wyrm society.

Metallic-
This variant of wyrm thrives on order and schedules, always knowing what is to come next. Some researchers into the subspecies go so far as to say they display precognitive abilities, and indeed studies have suggested a slight ability to observe future scenerios could be considered fact. It appears as if with this particular ability, the dragon can discern from a multitude of different outcomes that may occur and decide if making the slightest adjustment in a particular moment will alter the outcome in their favour. This psychic foresight suggests they are incorrigible cheats at poker.

Wasp-
The most emotional range of Birthstone Wyrms, Wasp primary dragons are often artists or curators of incredible natural museums.

Facet-
Considered the most pure genetic alignment, those wyrms with a Facet secondary gene are considered royalty amongst those of this particular researched subspecies. This variant brings with it a haughty nature without fail - the dragon knows it is superior to other winged variants, and it expects its authority to be valued, respected and obeyed. It is the faceted winged variant that determines any type of societal formation in a given area; they may decide on an Arthurian court structure or on a dictatorship.

Bee-

Eye Type Analysis-
Swirl-

Goat-

Faceted-
The most prized eye type.
Faceted eyes are considered closest to the ideal crystallized state, and thus are coveted among Birthstone Wyrms. The phenomenon does not seem to interfere with their vision.

Multigaze-
Not dissimiliar to the organic makeup of the metallic variant, those born with the multigaze genetic abnormality seem to exist in two concurrent timelines, phasing in and out of each and often have difficulty discerning which timeline they're interacting with at a given time. Often confused or forgetful, these dragons fare poorly, needing a significant amount of guidance to exist in our timeline.

Dark Sclera-
The most intelligent of the variants of wyrm, having a scientific mind (and some tell this researcher they find this variant to lack a sense of humour), those wyrms found with dark sclera are hyper-focused and drawn to learn everything they can about a given subject, making it their life's work to unravel and understand whatever strikes their fancy. Rare is the dark scleric who has more than one hobby.

Primal-
If there is a religion in Sornieth, those wyrms blessed by their deities' to receive the state of primal eyes clearly exude this divine touch. They seem almost otherworldly, perhaps trapped somewhere between this world and the next, one foot on the pillar of exaltation; this researcher wonders if they are a subspecies unto their own, one borne of the deities themselves, but this one is often refuted...
