Once, during an early time in the world, when dragons still struggled to evolve, the young goddess, Lightweaver, touched one of them and gave them a defined look and power to contrast them from other dragons. As they grew and multiplied, so did their intelligence. Promptly, they had discovered how to craft the finest metalwork. This brought about their name, the Gilded Forge.
But even greater still, they had discovered how to harness their unearthly power to visit times in the past. Though they could only make minor changes, that did not downcast the power much, for they had achieved something that nobody else could have believed possible.
In fact, these dragons were so honored that any family of dragons who found one of these individuals in their eggs was immediately honored and brought up in social status. It is thought that Lightweaver specifically chooses a family to hatch one of these Gilded Forge dragons, and so the chosen family must be very special to Lightweaver, if so.
But their lore goes far back into history.
When the first two Gilded Forge dragons were born, Lightweaver was in dear need of something. She hunted for help, taking enough years in her search for the hatchlings to grow into intelligent adults.
After learning of the goddess's search, they realized that they could help. Though their powers were weak, hardly recognizable at all at that time, their astuteness far outwitted that of any other creature.
The task that Lightweaver asked for seemed nothing more than a question.
But the question was difficult, having an answer that the mouth could not speak in any way or form. The laws of physics were broken around this special answer, for magic revolved around the query.
Dark times were also approaching, a darkness that Lightweaver could not flush out with her light. The answer was the only thing that could relieve the doomful caliginosity, but the task to find the refutation seemed impossible.
For years the two dragons chased for the answers of two questions; Lightweaver's inquiry and how to pass on the interpretation of it. They explored new regions until they could explore no longer, pondering upon the questions until their minds seemed to lose all thought. Alas, dark times began to approach. The signs came slowly; the sun grew small, warmth died from the earth. Streams disappeared, foul rain leaked from the sky. The Earth was turning into ruins.
And then, finally, the answers managed to wander into the dragons' minds. From the beds in which they rested in, they arose. But they were fearful, for the dark times were very close. They began to seek for Lightweaver, being quick with their search, for the remaining time they had was not long. They called for her, but she did not respond.
They climbed to the top of a tall mountain, a mountain in which a small beam of the Sun's light still shone. Lightweaver perched there, waiting, worried. But there was not enough time to pass on the dragons' answers. There never had been.
In an act of desperation, the two mortals shared their powers with Lightweaver's, hoping for any way to reverse the line of time.
Their magical abilities did not fail them. They were able to invert the clock, sending them back to a day on the planet in which was far from the time of darkness. At last, they could share their answers with the world.
So they created writing. If words could not be said, then they would be written. They developed their own written words, creating meaningful symbols on a layer of parchment.
Then they finally shared their knowledge.
How dearly happy Lightweaver was with that knowledge, creating a great feast to celebrate the victory. The world would be safe, kept cradled comfortably by the power of that one, simple answer.
As a gift, the goddess allowed the two dragons to keep their power of traveling back in time, though the changes they would be able to do would never be as great as the changes they had done at first. Lightweaver had also adopted a great favor for these dragons, always remembering the great intelligence they had that once saved the world.
