I can use three dragons to track my clan's progress through different regions:
Astra is the progenitor and ex-matriarch, who founded what was then Clan Forbera in plague territory with her mate and charge Nestor. She led them through the good and the bad, as the underground lair crept closer to Rotrock Rim and disease spread. She fell victim to it herself, and stepped down as matriarch, forcing Nestor to forfeit his power too. He was bitter, but Astra understood that she could never have led forever; the good of the clan was more important.
It wasn't long before Nestor caught a similar, but much faster-progressing disease as Astra. He became even more bitter and withdrawn as she helped her successors lead successfully and lived a mostly-normal life. Trouble was brewing, though and Astra's time as leader truly ended when the clan's scientists accidentally created an Emperor, wiping out half the clan and displacing the rest. She rose from the ashes even more determined, angrier, and wanting change.
Kina was the first dragon to make it out of the ruins of Clan Forbera's lair, followed by a guardian hatchling he named Baede. Not knowing what to do, and wanting to get away, he led her to the Southern Icefield, where they met the exiled Asil and settled at the base of a mountain. The crew of smugglers who worked with the clan tracked him down, and brought the others to him and the tiny new clan he'd set up. He named it Clan Clarion, and Astra deferred to him as a leader for his courage and ingenuity.
The good he'd built couldn't last, though, as the mages and scientists staged a rebellion against their leaders, leaving the clan split in two as Nestor took a stand against his mate and protector. The New Order, as they called themselves, split off to their own lair and began to create dangerous weapons and golems to fight against their rightful leaders. A bloody civil war ensued, and while the clan gained new members, others were being lost all the time.
When the war finally ended, Kina had gone from meek, uncertain, and awkward to determined, decisive, and a compassionate leader. He learned all there was to know from Astra, and when the clan was reunited, he instated her as an advisor to himself and Eilidh's leadership. Times were happy for a while, but as winter slipped into spring, the Icefield never warmed up. The tundra never defrosted. Nothing grew. It was a winter with no end. So Kina decided it was time to move on again.
Yves was born slightly after Clan Clarion moved to Sunbeam Ruins, to priestess Adelina. He was conceived solely for the purpose of being his mother's successor, as an exalter, and a spiritual protector in the harsh darkness of the Hewn City. The clan chose their lair out of necessity: their dubious doings only got more dubious during their time in the Icefield. The darkness protects them, but it also frightens and threatens. Yves is the lantern in the night.
He's still a young dragon, and his mother didn't stick around for long after his birth to teach him anything. But he's learning how to be a good leader from Kina, and learning about the reality behind divinity from Rackerty and Nuriel. Recently, a discharge in Nuriel's natural magic caused every egg in the clan vaults to hatch, and Yves is studying and working with him to understand why. He's a scholar, and believes in doing his best for a clan he was born to serve.
Though he does worry that rather than the miner's lantern, he might be the canary.
