They are fed stories of death, disfigurement and torment befalling those who failed to heed these warnings. Still, those are just stories, right? Decaying Skeletons are the brave and foolish souls, or whatever’s left of them, who decided to put the legends to the test. They are the result of dragons falling into the Wyrmwound, the pathogen-infested liquid within destroying scales and flesh. Some particularly unlucky individuals have had even their bones blackened by the festering ooze. These unfortunate dragons now wander the wasteland, horrifying reminders of what happens if one strays too near the Wyrmwound. Due to their horrific appearance and instability most clans shun them. That, and the fact that many of them are carriers of some of the most potent strains of disease known to dragonkind. These dragons often avoid contact with others, preferring to associate with their own kind. These dragons have trouble sensing pain and temperature, as the Wyrmwound’s infections have killed the nerves in their skin. This is a double-edged sword, as while it protects them from the agony some of their conditions would otherwise cause, it also means they often fail to notice when they've been hurt. This both increases their risk of serious infections and injuries, and reinforces the false idea that these dragons are zombies, causing some clans, particularly the more zealous Plague clans, to attack them on sight. It often seems as if an affected dragon’s own magic has been warped by the Wyrmwound’s energies into something unrecognizable, something dangerous. This causes many individuals to develop physical, mental, and magical abnormalities following their transformation. These abnormalities can range from beneficial, to inconveniencing, to downright lethal. The exact symptoms vary by dragon, but some changes are largely consistent across flight. The following are guidelines and generalizations. Feel free to give your dragon any combination of symptoms you want, including unlisted ones. [u]Arcane:[/u] Magical afflictions are dominant among Arcane dragons. This may manifest as an inability to use or store magic. The opposite, dragons who can hold greater quantities of mana than normal, or individuals who have been consumed by magic are also often seen. All of these conditions usually result in an early death for the victim. When physical mutations are seen, they are usually quite dramatic, extra limbs, eyes, etc. [u]Shadow:[/u] Photosensitivity is common, as is blindness. Some dragons will have their bodies overrun with fungi. Hallucinations and paranoia are not unheard of. [u]Light:[/u] Photosensitivity is sometimes seen. Obsessive behavior, often concerning interests the dragon had before their transformation, is often reported. Diseases of the mind are the most common in Light dragons, particularly dementia, memory loss and similar problems with cognition. [u]Plague:[/u] A compromised or overactive immune system has been noted, leaving the unfortunate dragon open to opportunistic infections, or potentially lethal allergies and autoimmune disorders. Physical alterations are very common and often quite unsettling. Extra limbs, eyes, mouths, and organs are only a few of the mutations reported. Increased aggression and a desire to spread the horrific diseases contained within their flesh is often seen. [u]Nature:[/u] The Wyrmwound often twists Nature dragon’s magic in a very visible way, causing plants in their vicinity to wither and die. This altered magic often has a ‘draining’ effect on both the affected dragon and those around them, causing them to become lethargic, even risking coma and cardiac arrest in the most serious cases. Rarely, Nature dragons can become hosts to parasitic plants, which can be contagious. Some individuals purposely attempt to infect others. [u]Water:[/u] Some dragons lose the ability to breathe underwater. Others develop severe hydrophobia. Dry skin is quite common. In severe cases it can even crack and bleed, leaving open wounds. Aside from being quite itchy and painful, this also leads to many infections. Many individuals with such skin problems seek out water almost compulsively in an effort to find relief. Hallucinations and psychosis have been reported. Conditions involving the circulatory and lymphatic systems can occur. [u]Wind:[/u] Respiratory ailments and infections are frequently encountered, often leading to decreased stamina and occasionally heart disease. Some individuals develop a fear of heights. Disorientation and trouble navigating have been seen, and are often particularly troublesome to Wind-born Decaying Skeletons. Damage to the ears can occur, which can cause problems with both hearing and balance. [u]Fire:[/u] Heat sensitivity is common. Chronic hyperthermia (which can lead to delusions, hallucinations, and even brain damage in severe cases) due to uncontrolled magic is often seen. In the most extreme cases spontaneous combustion has even been reported. Some individuals are prone to fits of violent rage [u]Ice:[/u] Increased sensitivity to heat and light, increased risk of frostbite. Some degree of chronic hypothermia is a common occurrence. This can even lead to tissue death in the dragon’s extremities due to reduced blood flow as the their body tries to protect its vital organs from the cold. Some individuals even have ice form on their bodies. Hoarding tendencies can occasionally arise. [u]Lightning:[/u] Insomnia is quite common. Problems with the central nervous system are often seen, and can cause seizures, paralysis, personality changes, altered states of consciousness and many other debilitating symptoms. Less commonly, issues can arise with the peripheral nervous system, causing symptoms such as: nerve pain, muscle spasms and local paralysis and lack of sensation. [u]Earth:[/u] Earth-aligned Decaying Skeletons have problems with their bones and joints at a higher rate than Decaying Skeletons of any other flight. Tissue calcification has been noted, and in extreme cases can even lead to death, especially if the muscles controlling the dragon’s breathing are involved. Memory loss is commonly reported, and is often devastating to both the afflicted dragon and their families.
