Disease and old age have plagued dragonkind throughout its entire history. For almost as long, dragons have been searching for ways to overcome these issues, to cure the illnesses that ravage them, and turn back the clock so that they may enjoy their time on Sornieth a little longer. In some ways, they've made great strides towards this goal, but in others, it's as if we're still living in the first age. Although science, medicine and the magical arts all work tirelessly to complete this mission they started so long ago, for many dragons, the breakthroughs they may deliver will come too late.
Some dragons however, believe they have found a procedure to save these individuals, though it may come at a price.
That procedure is cryonics, the practice of using low temperatures to preserve the terminally ill in the hopes that future technologies will be able to cure them. No one ever guaranteed it would work, and the stakes couldn't get much higher, we're quite literally talking life and death here. All possible precautions must be taken to maximize the chances of success and minimize the risks involved. There is one risk however, that no one could have predicted.
Enter the Cryoborgs, the unlucky victims of a magical surge. Their cold flesh has been fused with the machinery engineered to protect them, and the magic that almost killed them. They are almost always coated in ice, the omnipresent chill preserving and sustaining them. For this reason, heat is often lethal, though individuals with more robotic parts tend to have increased resilience.
The state a Cryoborg awakens in is dependant on many factors, and varies widely, depending on their health at the time they were placed in suspension, the amount of damage caused by this process, and their transformation, and how much of their tissue was replaced by cybernetics. Some dragon retain little of their past selves, while others appear to have been nearly unaffected, save for the permafrost covering their scales, and the bits of metal and wire intertwined with their flesh. Most will suffer some degree of memory loss, however, and almost all of them struggle with figuring out who they are, and their place in this unfamiliar world they have woken up in.
Now many of them wander Sornieth, struggling to find a balance between their draconic and mechanical sides, their pasts, told in flashes of memories, and their presents, confusing, and unforeseen. As for their futures? That's for them to decide.
