----- - H I S T O R Y - ----- When Sorineth was still young, and dragonkind was first stretching its wings across the land, a few small groups of Ridgebacks migrated from the Shifting Expanse to the towering cliffs of the Reedcleft Ascent. Though their numbers were few, these clans thrived in the windswept bamboo forests that clung to the rock. Over time, the Cirrus Shards, as they became known, evolved to better suit their home and became known as the region's fiercest hunters. Natural burrowers, they would carve their lairs out of a chosen pillar in the Ascent, creating intricate, spiraling palaces of stone that were sheltered from even the wildest winds. Occasionally, these lairs were shared with resident harpy flocks, but most Cirrus Shards are very wary of outsiders and prefer to live only with their own kind. If one is persistent enough to earn a Cirrus Shard's trust, they will have gained an unflinchingly loyal friend, and an invaluable ally in any fight. Cirrus Shards have a very distinct appearance: their bodies are covered in tough, steely grey scales that are typically striated in some way, and their wings are translucent and glass-like, with razor-sharp edges. Most carve their hides with runes for swiftness and stealth, which along with their other markings provide excellent camouflage, helping them hunt unseen and unheard despite their size. These dragons will fly as high as the atmosphere can sustain them, floating on warm thermals and scanning the waters below for prey. Especially on grey, stormy days, the blues of their wings and the sun's reflection off their scales distort their forms just enough that they seem to vanish completely until the moment they dive. By that point, it's usually too late for whatever unfortunate piece of seafood they've spotted. Cirrus Shards typically skim the surface when they pull out of a dive, snatching their dinner from the water with their talons without hardly getting their wings wet, but many have developed a much higher tolerance for water than the rest of their species. They are talented swimmers that can take down prey larger than they are by diving directly on top of it and using their weight to stun and pin it against the rocks underwater. Some Shards, typically those born with darker coloration, even prefer to hunt during raging thunderstorms. They use the violent weather and charged air to their advantage, flying lower and striking in coordination with the lightning. These dragons have even harder scales than their fair-weather relatives and can withstand the occasional electrocution. They've even been known to use their wings as giant conductors to blind and shock their opponents. These dragons earned the nickname 'Fulgurites'. Little is known about what happened to the Cirrus Shards. For an age, they dominated the Reedcleft Ascent, and almost overnight, they seemed to vanish, leaving only their empty lairs behind centuries later. The oldest dragons remember rumors that the Shards had dug too deep and awoken an Emperor slumbering deep in the cliffs. The clan leaders summoned every able bodied Cirrus Shard to help defeat it, but it was too powerful, and their population was decimated. The wildest tall-tales say that eventually the gods had to be summoned to prevent the emperor from destroying the Windsinger's domain. Until recently, the Shards were believed to be extinct, but these dragons are tough, and possess uncommonly long lifespans. When other clans began to settle in their old lairs, a mated pair of Cirrus Shards that had been dormant, nursing their wounds deep underground for centuries, were awoken. Though these two, and any other remaining Cirrus Shards, are scattered across Sorineth, they always return to the Windswept Plateau to breed in the hopes that their children will know something of their roots, bringing their ancient history with them to whichever clans they decide to call home... -----
