The Gladekeeper's Beasts

A Subspecies/Fan Breed by Anukfilli

Please do not claim this subspecies as your own! I plan to make more posts about the Gladekeeper’s Beasts soon, but they might end up in different sections of the forum (Dragon Share, Creative Corner, Dragon Sales, etc.).

NOTE: This is going on the backburner for a little while, but it's not completely tossed out! You're always free to ping me in the Gladebeast threads or msg me about them, as I still check my notifications when I can.

Introduction

Meet the Gladekeeper’s Beasts

Lore

Dragons from across Sornieth come to the Viridian Labyrinth to forge clans amongst the lush jungles, but very few carry the same, deep respect for the forests as the ancient tribes before them. The untamed lands are under threat by the expansion of modern dragon clans and Beastclans, causing more feral tribes of Nature dragons to retreat to the Shrieking Wilds. Some even journey to the Behemoth in attempts to seek help from the Gladekeeper herself, but the goddess does not intervene. Surely, her children can protect their homes themselves.

But, even a great deity such as the Gladekeeper could not have anticipated the arrival of the most recent threat to Sornieth. An Emperor, the undead fusion of several unfortunate Imperials, terrorizing the Sunbeam Ruins and all its inhabitants. It may only be a matter of time before the monster’s path of destruction reaches the rest of Sornieth. The Gladekeeper, now aware of the true danger, decides on a plan of action. The nature clans in the heart of the jungles are the first to catch glimpses of these new creations. They start calling them the Gladekeeper’s Beasts, or Gladebeasts for short, and merely assume they are mystical guardians sent to answer their prayers and desperate pleas. After all, some of them had become so isolated that they were completely unaware of the Emperor. The tribes begin treating the Beasts almost like new deities, leaving peace offerings for them in hopes that they will defend their homes in times of need. The Gladekeeper’s Beasts now serve as vicious protectors of the Labyrinth and are an effective way of teaching disrespectful dragons or Beastclans to fear the untamable wilds of Nature.

Of course, not everything created by the dragon gods is perfect…

Physical Attributes

The Gladebeasts are a giant, hulking breed in comparison to their nimble Wildclaw counterparts. Those who have been lucky enough (or unlucky, depending on the circumstances) to see one for themselves will claim that adults can rival most Guardian dragons in both size and strength.

While this bulk does lend them many advantages, it also means that they have become completely flightless. It is theorized that hatchlings can glide to escape predators or chase prey, but no one has had the courage to search for a Beast nest, yet. Their feathered wings are useless for flight but do make for an excellent threat display toward other dragons or simply an indicator of their moods, along with the fan of extra feathers on their tails.

They walk on their hind legs while their forelimbs have been reduced to short, stocky arms that each possess 3 razor-like claws, with the innermost claw being the largest. It is possible that their arms became smaller to counterbalance their large skulls and the curved horns atop them. Those who have encountered fully-grown Gladebeasts say their hides are riddled with old, faded scars and their backs covered in moss and leaf litter.

According to groups of explorers and truth-seekers, Gladebeasts are highly aggressive when it comes to defending their territories. Some say they will go as far as attacking their own kind, leaving each other with broken horns and missing feathers. In one case, an elder individual was missing its entire wing from a fight long ago. Even courtship involves combat, as the pair will headbutt and mock-charge to impress one another. To reduce confusion during this ritual, they emit odd cooing sounds to signal that they are not truly being aggressive.

Little is known about their nesting habits, but it is assumed that they still care for the hatchlings like most dragons. Lone juveniles are a rare sight due to their protective mothers, but once, one was supposedly spotted trying to steal an egg right from a clan’s nursery. There is no single explanation for that strange behavior and it is not even clear whether this was a young Beast or just a thief from a rival clan.

Currently, there are no known Gladebeasts living among other dragons in clan lairs. It isn’t even known if they can speak or understand traditional draconic at all; however, with populations slowly increasing, these behaviors could quite possibly change.

From what is known about the Gladekeeper’s Beasts, they do not construct conventional lairs and instead dig a large ditch that they lay in during brief hibernation periods. Vegetation that collects on their backs and wings, along with their greenish colors, allows them to practically disappear into the forest floor. Small animals such as frogs, snakes, or rodents have a tendency to make nests on the backs of Gladebeasts while they sleep.

When they are not camouflaged in the ground, Gladebeasts take long and thorough patrols around their vast territories. Beasts with more claimed land hold a higher status among their own kind and will diligently protect their chosen forests from intruders; unfortunately for scholars who try to study them, Gladebeasts have a rather broad definition of “intruder.”

When a Gladebeast does decide to strike, they do so by charging at full speed with their wings flared in aggression and their heads lowered like a bull. They often ram into their opponents with their reinforced skulls to stun them before using teeth and claws for the rest. They prefer this method due to their poor ability to use spells or charms. Gladebeasts do not seem to care much if they receive minor injuries during these charges, since they appear to have incredibly fast healing and, in some cases, the ability to regrow entire limbs.

Amalgamates are already a force to be reckoned with, but the addition of a Beast’s temper and size can certainly increase the danger. Their natural aggression toward creatures of the Hivemind, combined with the Amalgamates’ hunting habits, make for a truly relentless predator of drones. The strange, sticky substance that forms their bodies also helps them traverse any terrain with ease while on the prowl. Few creatures are safe from an ‘Amalgabeast’.
