[nextcol][center][i]When Sornieth itself was young, many species of dragons existed, staking their claim across the elementally-trialed grounds, settling vast clans and carving their lairs into the ground. Some took to savagery, building tribes of dragons which fought viciously for what was theirs. Others took to civility, deciding instead to learn what they could and leave this knowledge for future generations.
Of the many elemental regions and the many groups of dragons that settled across them, one remains struck from history; before it was known as the Shifting Expanse, the vast desert was taken to by a species known as the Ashoat. In this desert, a bountiful oasis was discovered by their founder, and it was chosen as their capital that they built their empire around.
The Ashoat were beautiful and hardy, and chose intellect over brutality. They decorated themselves with fine silks and linens, and took a liking to the brilliant materials that ran down the mineral-rich river they'd built themselves around. With sharp tongues and minds, the location they'd chosen was a perfect place for them to begin to build their empire.
For many generations, the Ashoat thrived, storing their knowledge in their vaults, which was accumulated in high volumes thanks to the solitude the desert provided.
They viewed all as equals, but some dragons were born with more elemental energy than others; viewed as gifts from the deities themselves, these dragons were raised and put upon pedestals, treated like young gods themselves; eventually, each of them would rise to a position of power, leading the empire in a new direction as they saw fit; and when it came time for a new young deity to rise to the position, the leader would be exalted to a higher position where they were free to do nearly whatever they pleased. Temples rose for these young deities, who would, in return, give a gift to the land below with their potent magicks, such as bountiful rains to boost harvests, or boons of fertility among the dragons themselves.
One young deity in particular was beloved more than others in the past had been, and when he rose to his rank as all others had, he continued to gift the empire with an annual rain that fed the ground with richer minerals than the river could provide. However, when one year the rain did not arrive, nor in the few following years, the Ashoat discovered their young deity was sad, as he felt very alone despite the other young deities among him, who had all found love or were not seeking it.
A young princess of sorts was among their ranks, and the Ashoat felt she would be a wonderful match for their young deity; however, when she was offered to him and she refused to be with him simply because the people had decided to give her away without even considering her feelings, their young deity became enraged.
In his anger, he destroyed most of the empire that had stood for so long, and trapped the young princess in amber, a curse born of his gift. Many of the Ashoat were killed in the storms that raged, nests destroyed, and the race never making it to true record, essentially erasing them from the world as if they'd never been. The river ran dry, and a great chasm split the desert, marking the land with a gorge that would become famous in time.
Through many centuries, Sornieth itself continued to change and adapt and build, and at last, the princess' cage of amber was broken and she was awoken; however, she no longer recognized the world around her, nor knew that everything she'd ever known was gone.
However, it would seem some of her people must have survived; despite all the time that had passed, she noticed the traits of the Ashoat in a rare few of the dragons she'd encountered, and decided that perhaps not all was lost to time.

Their lairs are typically well-decorated and kept very clean, though it's not uncommon for them to keep pets who may go against this habit of theirs.
