TOPIC | Space/ Planet Dragons

Ever since I joined Flight Rising, I wanted to create dragons to represent the planets. I've always loved astronomy and once thought about doing it as a career, but never pursued it (I still like space though, so I wanted to create my very own planet dragons). I put a lot of thought and effort into it and I'm quite proud of them, so I want to show them off (and explain how I picked them).

First off, I wanted to try to not repeat either the breed or element, if possible. There are 9 planets and 3 space dragons (=12 dragons), so I only repeated an element once (the ice element), and I managed to not repeat a breed. And as the planets are named after the Roman gods, I decided to keep it that way with my dragons (with the Greek equivalent in parentheses). I chose the gender, breed, and element based on the god; and the colors and genes based off of the actual planet. For some of the planets, I had to wait for the expansion of the color wheel and for new genes (like alloy and stained) to be created.

I decided to keep each one plain- the only apparel they wear is the elemental emblem on their forehead. And they each have a festival familiar (in their own element) as a companion.

So, here we go!

Space dragons: The Sun, Moon, and space dragons I chose mainly for their size. Imperials are the largest breed, and I found a beautiful Constellation skin, so I had to get an imperial to represent space. And I named her after Nox (aka Nyx), the goddess of night- Romans didn’t know or believe in space, so night was the closest I could get to space. And I chose ice, so that her eye would look like another star. Ridgebacks are the second largest, so I chose one to represent the sun. I also chose him for his spines, to represent the sun’s spicules. I named him after the Roman god of the sun, Sol, with Helios being the greek equivalent. And I chose the element fire to go with a fiery sun. His genes/ colors are fire crystal/ fire facet/ and obsidian crackle. Faes are the smallest dragon breed, so I chose a fae to represent the Earth’s moon. She is named after the Roman goddess of the moon, Luna (aka Selene). She has the element ice because it seems really fitting for the moon- it is cool and beautiful. Plus ice is like the opposite, yet complimentary element to fire. Her genes/ colors are white crystal/ grey hex/ and white thylacine. I like to breed Luna and Sol as a pair. Inner Planets: First is Mercury (aka Hermes), the messenger of the gods. I chose a Coatl because Hermes is always depicted with wings behind his feet to make him fly/ go faster, and Coatls have a set of wings behind their feet. Additionally, Hermes' staff (the caduceus) has two snakes intertwined on it, and since Coatls are kind of snake-like, I thought they were a good choice. I chose the arcane element because it seems… whimsical, I guess, as Hermes is. *shrugs* His colors/genes are ivory speckle/ ivory freckle/ ivory underbelly to match the picture of the planet. Next is Venus (aka Aphrodite), the goddess of love. I picked a Pearlcatcher because this dragon has the most feminine pose out of all the breeds on FR (in my opinion)... and if you pretend that the pearl is a child, it looks like she is cradling it. I chose the element of light because it gives a feeling of warmth and happiness… of “love”. Her colors/ genes are saffron ripple/ saffron current/ moss stained to match the planet as best as possible (her colors were really hard to pick out). Next is Earth (aka Gaia or Gaea), the goddess of the Earth. I chose a Snapper for her because they originated from the earth side of FR, they are land-bound (cannot fly), and they look like dinosaurs. I chose the earth element because she's the goddess representing earth. Her colors/ genes are navy ripple/ forest basic/ and white smoke to match Earth. And lastly Mars (aka Ares), the god of war. I chose mirror and the plague element because they seemed the most interested in war and destruction (based off of looks and FR lore). His colors/ genes are cinnamon clown/ obsidian basic/ and cinnamon smoke to match the planet (there are so many pictures of Mars online, it was really hard to narrow the choices). Outer Planets: Jupiter (aka Zeus), the king of the gods/ god of lightning. I chose the lightning element for him. I chose to have him be a wildclaw mainly for how the eye spots gene looked on the breed. On wildclaws, there is only one visible spot from the gene, while on other breeds, you see multiple spots from the gene (I wanted only one for Jupiter's Great Red Spot). But also, wildclaws look pretty majestic and noble (with the crown-like horns on their heads plus being upright while the other breeds are on all fours). His colors/ genes are maize basic/ fire eye spots/ and tan okapi. Next is Saturn (aka Cronus), the god of agriculture and time. I chose the nature element to go with the agriculture. I also chose him for how the secondary looked on the tundra breed. I liked the circular mane on a male tundra and thought that it would be great to represent Saturn’s rings, so I made sure to choose a metallic color for the secondary. His genes/ colors are ivory iridescent/ antique alloy/ and banana underbelly. It took forever to pick his colors. Next up is Uranus (aka Ouranos), the god of the sky. I chose the wind element to go with the airiness of the sky, and the skydancer breed for the feathery wings. His genes/ colors are pistachio iridescent/ pistachio shimmer/ and robin stained (I really like his color combination). I like to breed him and Nox together- they make some pretty space babies. Then there is Neptune (aka Poseidon), the god of the sea. I chose the water element to go with him (hopefully that’s an obvious choice). And I chose a nocturne because they look the most webby/ watery of all the breeds. Additionally, the horns along their head looks like the trident that Poseidon is always depicted with. His colors/ genes are splash basic/ splash basic/ and periwinkle glimmer to match the planet. And lastly there is Pluto (aka Hades), the god of the underworld. Even though Pluto is technically a dwarf planet, I grew up learning that it was a planet, so I decided to make a dragon for it too (plus the god Pluto is very prominent in mythology, so…). I chose the shadow element because it is often associated with death and the underworld. And I chose a spiral for the two horns- Pluto is depicted using a two-pronged staff. And male spirals seem to always be smirking, like they have something tricky up their sleeves. His genes/ colors are ivory ripple/ ivory current/ and chocolate underbelly to match the planet. I would love to hear about what you guys think. Sorry that my post is so long, I’m just really proud of them. And if you guys are doing your own versions of space or planet dragons, I would love to hear about it!

@KaBlam

I don’t have anything intelligent to add but I love the dragons you’ve picked out for all of these! You obviously put a lot of thought into them and it shows. (Also I love the Great Red Spot as eye spot omg)

dang, that's an incredible collection you have there!! i love all the thought you put into all the little details, it really makes them all shine something special :) if i had to pick a favorite (which is hard, they're all so good) it'd be earth! she's just. stunning. i really don't have more words for her, everything about her is just so beautiful.

(and i agree you should make sol & luna a breeding pair! they've got such a wide range they'd make some interesting kids, and their lore possibilities are really cool!)

Dang, these are great!
Although I do think you missed out by not using the "Moon" color, I think your moon fae is my favorite!
Have you considered giving your Jupiter dragon... well, uh... Jupiter?
