The old myths told stories of creatures with two tails that looked like cats, these beasts battled their dragon cousins for years until they were eventually hunted to extinction. at least that's what is generally believed, some of the older scrolls claim that the creatures, called Nekomatas or Doom Cats, went into hiding when dragons started retaliating by hunting the doom cats down and selling their fur and using their canines as knives. Some movement in a corner makes you look up only to see a beast from legend staring at you, he looked like a wildclaw with odd features. the Nekomata watches you with sharp and very intelligent eyes as he walks slowly forward two long, sharp canine teeth are visible even with his jaws closed, he tilts his head and looks behind him before turning his attention back to you. "Why are you here?" he asks smoothly, only the barest hint of hostility in his voice A small tan, stone, chocolate pearlcatcher looking Nekomata walks in "I thought that was obvious, there's a howling storm." he said "And that's an excuse to rummage through books and scrolls. Curious." the other chuckled The other huffed and shook his head, clearly amused by his younger companion "What my daughter sees in you." he rumbled teasingly . A small female pearlcatcher pads out "Supper is done." she paused and looked at you "looks like you'll be here awhile, please join us, we have plenty." Hi and welcome to the Nekomata subspecies!
If you want to be on a ping list or have any questions please either ping or message me(@RogueDemon) or @EclipseOnyx as we both run this subspecies and worked very hard to get it up and running.

Appearance:
This subspecies boasts a variety of natural colors and pelt patterns, the dragons who proudly claim themselves part of this elusive species share a similar appearance to large and domestic cats. these dragons have grown a second tail which doesn't seem to have much purpose although myths abound with reasons and theories for this mutation. the Nekomatas vary in appearance form vaguely feline like to looking like large cats with wings, although most simply have a light dusting of fur on their scales, feline features, and at times manes similar to male lions.

Origins: The doom cats of the earth Mountains and the Ice glaciers. These creatures are beasts made by the Gods themselves. Once a rebellious or abused cat would run away into the mountains they would turn into vicious beast. Who wanted to roam the land looking for territory for there clans. But with their intelligence they hid themselves to grow their armies.
For years these have been hiding in their mountains but now their back. And their genes haven taken possession of the dragons roaming the land. Cat like dragons have started to appear in clans coming in multiple colors and gene patterns. When a dragon on their travels gets lost in the mountains or glacier they chance. They never come back as themselves. They have become a Nekomata, this also happens when young hatchlings are left and abandoned in the mountain ranges. When they return from the mountains they will go looking for their own kind and the Nekomata’s. Or if their former home still wants them they sometimes go back to where they lived before.

Social: These odd creatures often wander alone or in pairs, rarely they will form large groups and claim a area for their territory. these groups, when they form are close knit and loyal often defending each other and taking care of their wounded tribe mates, these tribes can be a danger to dragons who unknowingly wander to close to their dens as they can be seen as a threat and attacked. groups have a 'Alpha' male and female, although generally referred to as a chief male and female, who keep peace and order within the group and protect those who live within the group.
Threats to one are often confronted by all as the Nekomatas will group together and bristle to try to look bigger than they really are to intimidate the threat before attacking it and trying to drive it off. if they are successful at driving it off several from the group will give chase to make sure the threat has left. most of these creatures prefer to dress in colorful feathers, vines, and bones although some will tolerate cloths, this is in general a rare occurrence that only those who have lived with dragons for years will accept.

Mating: Nekomatas mate for life and unlike dragons give birth to live young, small litters of one to five, the birth is difficult for the mother and she often finds a warm place within the clan to bear her young. the only one the Queen will usually tolerate in her den with her is her mate, who will offer comfort to the best of his ability until the cubs are born. The only exception to this is when Nekeomatas live with dragons, the healer of the clan is tolerated if needed, any more than this will be attacked by either the mother of father and there is no guarantee that the mother will not attack the healer and her own mate if she's in enough pain.
As mentioned Nekomatas mate for life, the death of a partner is taken very hard by the surviving mate, and it's not uncommon for the survivor of the couple to shut it's self away for week while they grieve their lost mate.

Masters and Tamers:
Nekomata masters and tamers are dragons who have lived among these creatures and worked with them for years and have gained the trust of one or more Nekomata, often the only dragon a Nekomata in a dragon clan will listen to. there is little to no difference in Tamers and Masters and a Nekomata will usually give the one or the other titles to a dragon who they have bonded to.
these dragons are often the best protected as a Nekomata will never leave 'their' dragon to face a danger alone, Tamers are usually in general a good dragon who treat their Nekomata kindly; however there have been rare cases of Tamers or Masters being less than kind, abusing their nekomata. although abusive tamers don't usually last long as the nekomata will become less and less protective and eventually either leave or lead them to their end.

Eyes:
With the explosion of elemental magic came many new and wonderful things, life thrived in the aftermath and seemed stronger for the new energy that seemed to flow through the land; many dragons seemed excited that the Eleven had spoken again after being silent so long some clans seemed to have lost their faith. this new flow of magic and energy didn't have an immediate effect on the Nekomatas, after so long in hiding many had lost the ability to be powerful mages with time the magic would return, but such a strong influx of magic had an unpredictable effect on the young of the feline-like dragons. Litters were born with odd eyes, many just had darker eye colors or different shades, but some unfortunate cubs were born with more than two eyes or eyes that looked like that of a bug. these unfortunate cubs were left with clans or killed by their parents depending on the parents, others were born with their birth element visible on or around their eyes in some way or another. the fortunate cubs born with this second mutation were considered blessed by one of the Eleven with the exception of one, those born with Plague Primal eyes were often either blind or had another illness that would follow them through life if it didn't kill them, always marked by blisters around and sometimes on their eyes. the last mutation is the oddest, but still considered a blessing, some cubs were born with glowing eyes. these cubs often excelled at magic and healing others with those born to nature having a gift for growing the herbs they would need.

Cubs born with what draconic society called Common, Uncommon, Unusual, Rare, Primal, and Glowing eyes are often Shamans to their clans and held in high regards by the rest of the nekomatas. Shamans have a high magical potential and often thought to be more like what the subspecies was once.

Varients:
Wild: This variant is large and heavily muscled, often working as guards or warriors for their clans this variant is aggressive an stubborn. not easily trained by any dragon they do not take well to taking orders, often ending up as leaders for 'berserker' groups who run into a battle first and attack whoever or whatever they can before the rest of their clan's warriors come in to attack.
This variant can be very gentle and loyal to a dragon who earns their trust, although often avoids contact with dragon kind as a general rule since their pelts are worth quite a bit of treasure. this subspecies has been hunted by dragon kind and are not prone to trusting a dragon at first, it takes a lot of work to earn their trust and in turn their loyalty.

Domestic: This variant can be small or large although they are usually very docile and easy to train they can be stubborn and rebellious if the mood strikes them. generally easier to deal with for clans this variant is popular as scouts and small game hunters since they are not as large as their wild, lion, and Saber - toothed cousins. the domestic variant is generally affectionate toward most dragon, particularly ones they bond to, some have been known to refuse to leave 'their' dragon for any reason. This variant is intelligent although they seem more than happy to lay around their lair or den and relax, hunting or doing tasks at their own pace.

Lion variant:
These type's of Nekomata's behave much like lions. form clans and pride's with up to 4 males present. The females most of the time don't leave the clan they stay where they were born. The males do shift clans chased out or ready to form their own clan. within a dragon lair up to two Nekomata clans can be formed. There will be one male that is king and the others will serve as sub males, almost like a guard or soldiers. These types only come from the Earth flight mountains.
They aren't to aggressive if you leave them be. These creatures poses a roar, which serve's as an extra form of communication. They can either live in the wild or in dragon lairs, when in lairs they will follow the guidance of a nekomata master and will protect the lair like an army. Most lairs keep them for that purpose but sometimes strong friendships can be formed with these creatures.

Saber-tooth cat:
This variant is known for it's strength, speed and the two long curved canine teeth it has which are visible even when it's mouth is closed, this variant is believed to be the oldest of the subspecies and possibly having originated in the Southern Ice fields and Dragonhomes's mountains and caves therein the two territories. this variant lives in either small groups or in pairs, these Nekomatas hunt and eat large game and are excellent hunters either solo or group hunts are common activities among families. this variant is no more aggressive toward others of it's kind than any other variant of the subspecies often welcoming strangers of the subspecies into their dens for short periods of time although most are hostile towards dragons they have been known to accept normal dragons into their groups and even submit to Nekomata 'Masters' although to gain the trust and respect of one of these beasts is a feat. This variant communicates with growls, chuffs, purrs, hisses, and roars which can travel several hundred miles to call their mate or 'pride' if need be or warm them of danger.

It is thought by the Masters who have lived and studied these creatures that the Sabers have come into contact with ancient dragons and that the two species fought each other, for one reason or another, almost driving the Sabers to extinction before the variant went into hiding. these Nekomatas can make loyal companions and steadfast guardians, often when a Saber 'claims' a dragon they can be found guarding the place that the dragon lived even long after their dragon passes on, a saber will tolerate no threat to anything they claim as theirs and will spend years keeping a place safe and well cared for before leaving it to the surrounding creatures.

Outcasts: Those born the wrong breed or with the wrong colors are often chased out, killed or abandoned by their parents; they are not accepted by the other Nekomatas however they can often find shelter with dragons as they are ferocious fighters and loyal companions to those they consider worthy of their trust. earning the trust of an outcast is easier said than done as they are usually cautious of everyone they meet and often test potential friends' patience with their erratic behavior.
Outcasts some times band together to form small groups, finding safety in numbers and comfort in companions who have gone through the same thing. these nekomatas very rarely are protected by their parents and taken care of, nekomatas who do this are often shunned by others of their kind and chased out of their territories to wander, some fight off the attacks and remain in their clan, but are never viewed the same by the rest of their kind again.

Monthly Prompt

Hello, we have for our sub species a monthly prompt to get to know your Neko and maybe expand their lore to ^^. Your task is to write or draw the reaction of your Nekomata to a little piece of writing I put down in a post every month at the start of a festival. The prompt will always be based around the flight that is having a festival that month. Depending on which action you choose you will get a reward that fits the ending of your story or the drawing nothing to crazy just something really random for fun!! You can enter each registered Neko once. I hope you guys will have fun with this!!

-Eclipse
Prompt: Rushing water
(you= your Neko in this perspective) You are wandering around the territory and suddenly hear a stream of rushing water. “Thats weird” your thoughts tell you, there isn’t supposed to be a stream or river here. So what will you do?? Investigate to see what it is or just move on and go whatever you had planned??

I hope you Enjoy this prompt and find a happy ending ~Eclipse

@JJT555 @kyrin18 @PerilousPirate, @KawaiiKass01, @X5T0RMXless, @WolfandCrow, @DecemberStar @RogueDemon

Monthly prompt is here enjoy!!

This is a really cool idea, with nice lore. Any chance I can register one? =3 And who she will grow up to become= *Lore-wise, she was never a nocturne. =) Her breed scroll will be the next item I purchase. Name: None yet, she was just found. Variant: Lion Other: Outgoing and much more familiar with 'normal' dragons than most of her kind because of her upbringing. She was found alone in the dark forests of Shadow barely hours old and saved from certain death to exposure. She was dragon enough that the clan couldn't just let her die so they raised her, only discovering what she was when a lone nekomata caught her scent and came to her... ... ... Seriously, I already have lore for her?! xD And now I'm heading to the auction house to find the nekomata that found the little girl in our clan. ;)

Hum, curious, can the different subspecies interbreed? It seems like in most cases they would stick to their own kind, but if they happened to be the only two among a clan of 'normal' dragons?

I have decided on my little kitten's mate! =3 Name: XieZhen after a hunter spirit nicknamed the 'double headed serpent' from a chinese novel. Thanks Google! =) Variant: Wild Other: Definitely a tsundere. To outsiders and enemies hes the first to strike out and always goes for the kill. Among his pride though, hes a big softie, playing with the kittens and caring for everyone. ;3 Even though they don't wear clothing most of the time, looking at the lion headdresses they seem mostly natural, like cured pelts (this works for the wolf pelts too, though what kind of cat would wear a dogs pelt on their body? ;) ). Of course it would be a bit controversial within the prides to wear a Lion skin seeing as at least part of them is related to the big cats. Or there's the other view of it, a show of strength and power for wearing the pelt of their mighty relative as an ornament. ;) I love these guys, such great lore just writes itself! xD Oh you wanted a ping! @DecemberStar
