Hey again! I was thinking of writing out some of my fossil dragons’ personal lore later, so I came to read the origin story again, and I was wondering about a few things in it. First, I think it says the spell/curse affected the graves around the Cairnstone Rest, but since the range of acceptable colors takes all sorts of soil (and flights) into account, could it have spread further to random spots on the world map? I have one really sandy boy that I registered earlier, and I’d like to get pointers on whether he could’ve died and been reborn, for example, around the Shifting Expanse, or if I should make it so that his body was brought to the graveyard after his death but still buried in a sandy spot (which would mean he left with the initial group). c:

It also took me a moment to write this comment on my phone, so it’s possible I just forgot reading about these details, but how lifelike are the fossil dragons, exactly? It said some are able to have healthy living kids, so surely their organs are working, but do they need food and water same as everyone else? Are their life spans seemingly eternal, do they have normal life spans for their species, or are they dependent on the effect of the curse and therefore extremely unpredictable, like the Imps’? (So that the effect may, if unlucky, wear off in just 10 years and end their second life early.)

Furthermore, they are obviously called fossil dragons because their bodies mimic the appearance of fossils, but are they really fully made of rock, or partially living tissue (like the organs)? And are there degrees of recovery, where someone might end up with stony skin but someone else might become fully organic, just with the patterns, like 2nd generation fossil dragons? And lastly this is kind of nitpicky, but since fossilization takes so very long, is it safe to assume that only the most ancient ones are born out of actual fossils (just stone in the shape of the body) and the others still have their bones (but the curse cuts out and hardens the surrounding ground, creating a fossil shell)? :D

I hope you don’t mind all these questions, I just really love the subspecies and it’s such a great idea! Take your time answering as well, and do ask if I wasn’t clear. <3

@Denial

I don't mind questions at all! I'm happy that you're so interested in the subspecies ^^ The original lore I wrote was pretty rushed, so my apologies that everything isn't as well explained as it maybe should be ^^"

I think it would indeed be possible that the spell would have spread all across Sornieth. After all: How could she have known how far the spell reaches since all she could see was the Cairnstone Rest.~ But it's also fine if you wish to write that the dragon you're writing lore for is from the Cairnstone Rest, as I could imagine they'd bury dragons of all elements there ^^

I have actually left it pretty open that how life like the Fossil Dragons actually are simply because I didn't want to set too much bondaries for people who are interested to writing lore, so you are pretty much free to describe your dragon as lively or as undead as you wish. I have thought that maybe those corpses who were more "fresh" would probably be those dragons that are also able to reproduce and who need food and water, but I could very well imagine that there would have been some really old corpses, some properly fossilized dragons, who had been awoken by the spell, but their bodies have been so eaten by time and soil that they aren't thus able to reproduce and also don't need to eat or drink. Same pretty much applies for their behavior: the fresher the corpse, the better are the chances that the dragon's mind and soul are similar to what they were before death. (Of course it could also be possible that a really powerful minded dragon might have their mind stay the same even after being dead for a long time.)

What comes to their lifespan however: I have indeed thought that they have been granted/cursed pretty much eternal life. I could imagine that they can be slain with powerful magic, and the more fresher dragons might even be killed with physical attacks.

The curse/spell won't wear off by it's own. Or that's what I originally have thought atleast. It can however be worn off after generations and later descendants of a Fossil Dragon might not even have the curse at all. The further the bloodline goes from the actual Fossil Dragon, the bigger are the chances that their offspring is fully alive (flesh and blood) and might only resemble their ancestor appearance-wise.

Aaaand to your last question: I kinda repeat the same answer here that they can pretty much be as life-like as you want. They can be fully fossilized and consist mostly of stone or they can indeed have organs and flesh, I leave the choice for the players to decide what they want their dragons to be ^^ I also like the fossil shell idea you mentioned, so that could very well be the case! It would be logical that the curse would have allowed the most fossilized dragons to cut through from the stone surrounding them.

Hopefully I didn't sound too dull as I've left many things open for the players to decide what they want their dragons to be. ^^" I hope I answered somewhat okay to your questions and let me know if I missed something or if there's anything else you'd like to ask!

Thanks for the insight! It wasn't too dull at all, I just wanted to check so that I don't go against the intended canon! :D I hadn't even thought of fossil dragon offspring being just as much fossil as their parents, I had sort of imagined the qualifying ones to be victims separate from their parents in canon. The option to interpret their bodies as you wish is nice too, I just wasn't sure if you had set more precise guidelines. Thanks again, this'll help once I get around to writing my dragons' lore! c:
