3hz05Cj.png Long ago, The Southern Icefields was home to a clan of colorless dragons, hatched by the cold and stoic Icewarden under the pale grey sky on the plains of a stark, white tundra.
There were no plants (other than the grey lichen growing on the rocky ground) or other wildlife, and the clan themselves took on the grey and lifeless color of their homeland.
The warmth of the sun was nothing but a myth to these dragons, and the world they inhabited was one without joy. There was nothing in this world other than simply trying to survive.

The lair of the Icewarden was a dark, craggy outcrop, and the nest of waxen eggs he kept sat nestled in the darkest corner. Each year, as the Summer Solstice approached, the sun would peek out from behind the clouds and remain for days and days on end, never dipping below the horizon. It would have been beautiful if it didn't also come with the warmest day of the year. The normally frozen ground became muddy and soggy in spots. The streams broke their ice and flooded their banks. Green shoots sprouted from the ground just at the edge of the water.

Every year, the Icewarden would remain inside his lair until the ground was nice and hard again and the temperate air had dissipated. However, one year on the Summer Solstice, when the sun was at it's brightest, the Icewarden decided to nudge the cold, icy eggs from their shrouded nest into the golden rays of the sun, eager to see if it would produce stronger, healthier hatchlings.

As the sun reached it's lowest point, he heard a distinctive crack. Rushing back to his eggs, he noticed the first hatchling push its way out of it's shell. The Icewarden was stunned at the coloration of the dragon. As the day went on, the rest of the hatchlings made their appearance, each one more saturated with ivory and blue than the next. It was as if they had absorbed the hues from the Midnight Sun directly into their fur.

By the time the sun finally set for a few brief moments the next day, the hatchlings had all emerged. The Icewarden wasn't sure what to expect from these dragons as they grew, but he had a feeling they might bring light to the darkest places of Sornieth.

The Icewarden's suspicion rang true. Filled with new warmth and joy, the Icewarden's once meek and colorless Clan of dragons slowly began to see the beauty of their colorless world, and vowed to spread this newfound cheer to all those whose lives needed a little light.

Now, after each harsh winter, the endless daylight of the Midnight Sun never arrives a day too early, and the descendents of the Icewarden's clan continue to hatch their young in the warmth of the sun.

Tundra Midnight Sun dragons hail from the Southern Icefields and are descendants of the Icewarden’s original clan. They may have Ice or Light eyes.

Fae Midnight Sun dragons typically hail from the Starfall Isles, but may originate from the Southern Icefields as well. Though they do not descend directly from the Icewarden’s clan, they mimic and continue the traditions and practices of this clan. According to legend, the clans of Fae Midnight Sun dragons began appearing some time after the original clan began to hatch their eggs during the phenomenon. It is believed that these Fae, originally stark white dragons from the Starfall Isles, silently and secretly observed the practices of their Southern neighbours. Not long after they began watching, these Fae began to follow the same hatching process as the Icewarden’s clan.

Though the fae variation may originate from anywhere in the Starfall Isles, they most often are born along the Starwood Strand. Fae Midnight Sun dragons most often have ice or light eyes, though the more ancient dragons of this subspecies may (rarely) have arcane eyes.

Imperial Midnight Sun dragons are the furthest descendants from the Icewarden’s original clan. Though they may have any of the typical eye colors, the most common is light. It is believed this variation originated from a wandering Imperial who stumbled upon a Midnight Sun clan and subsequently integrated into it. Though this is only speculation, it does account for the tendency that Imperial Midnight Sun’s possess of being aloof travellers, often migrating back to the Sunbeam Ruins shortly after hatching to tell tales of the Icefields and further research their origin.

Hello! I created this subspecies ages back and have now recently started it up again as an active species.

I'd love to hear thoughts on the lore, and of course any general interest!

Please do let me know if you have any questions - this thread is still a bit of a WIP.
