Apocalypse

Apocalypse was the second dragon on Dainan's mind. She struggled to follow the clans' strict rules. She was snappy and mean yet understanding. Her feathers were ragged and she was missing a few of her teeth. She was smart, calm, and terrifying to look at. Dainan was about to go find her but she stalked out of the shadows before he had even moved. Dainan jumped and Punisher looked a bit confused. "Surely you're not leaving without me?" She hissed. Dainan shook his head. "I-I was j-just a-about to come and g-get you," he stammered. Apocalypse slithered closer to him. Her tail swished slowly side to side. She was almost nose to nose with Dainan now. "Good," she said slowly.

And so began their journey.

After a few days, the group returned to Shadowsong. She looked weak, but not as bad as last time. Her eyes lit up as she saw Dainan and Apocalypse carrying two hatchlings-Voidsong and Nightsong! The two hatchlings looked happy to see Shadowsong and Nightsong managed to squirm out of Dainan's grip. Not Voidsong though. She tried, but Apocalypse was used to energetic hatchlings so she knew how to handle them. Before Shadowsong could thank them, Punisher handed her a note. Dainan held his head down and flicked his tail to indicate that it was time to leave. Feeling guilty, he hurried away with the rest of his companions following slower behind. "We should really stay and help," Apocalypse said as they continued through the forest. Dainan didn't respond. He didn't want to deal with "adventure" and "potentially deadly missions" ever again. He ignored his feelings of guilt.

Take these worthless hatchlings. They won't stop talking about peace. Peace of all things! They're pathetic. I'll find some better soldiers elsewhere. We will grow stronger and stronger no matter what everyone throws at us!

Biohazard was sitting perched on Squash. "Thanks for letting me come along," Squash said. "This is super cool. I mean we get to save a clan of nocturnes no one knows about! Wait until my sister hears about this!" "Please, the only reason you're here is so I can be lazy and not fly all the way." Biohazard replied, crests moving slightly. "Maybe I'll kick you off-" "That was a joke, chill." "Would it kill you to show emotion-" Squash stopped mid-sentence as soon as he realised what he said. That was the sentence that made Gloaming stop and turn around to face the ridgeback. "I'm sorry, I forgot, faes... I guess I'm just used to by sister making a bit more of an effort than most faes would go." "Yeah, whatever," Biohazard said, before turning towards Gloaming. "Hey, Gloaming, how much more do we have to travel?" "Not too much further. I know we're getting close," Gloaming answered back to her companion. The banter had stopped to Gloaming's relief as the trio kept on going, being guided by her senses. "Ah! Water, but also look, fish!" Squash's remark caused Gloaming and Biohazard to turn. In the pond of water was a golden fish. "Any chance I can stop for a snack?" He asked, already approaching it. Gloaming had been about to give a go ahead when she noticed the runes on the other Fae start to glow. Suddenly a light green bubble surrounded Squash. "Oha what's that for?" Referring to Biohazard by the shortened form she generally went by, it was then that she saw a puff of smoke being shot straight at Squash. The Ridgeback flinched, bracing for impact before realizing it had bounced off the bubble, hitting the fish head on. "That was a mimic. You're welcome." Gloaming had no clue how Biohazard had figured that out before her, but was still greatful for it. It was then when she felt something. "Singer magic!" Gloaming exclaimed. Her to friends looked at her, but she had already set off, trying to locate the source of it. Darting around various obstacles, she quickly came to a halt. She could feel the magic up ahead. The only problem was how in the same "up ahead," looked heavily guarded by a variety of odd creatures. Marble columns with Serthis attached, floating axes and harpy masks were just a few of the odd things she could see. "Any ideas?" Gloaming asked Biohazard and Squash. "We're dragons," Squash answered. "We fly. And hope none of the magic casters notice us." The three of them took flight, trying to be as silent, but as quick as possible. "Gloaming watch out!" Squash's warning came to late as a a bolt made with magic hit her. Gloaming crumpled mid-flight and started falling. Biohazard and Squash desperately trying to catch her before she hit the ground. The unconscious fae hit the ground first, followed by the landing of the other two. "You're clever, but not that clever." A cool level voice spoke. It was a darkly coloured nocturne. The nocturne's gaze fell upon Gloaming. "Weaker than I thought - I figured she would have at least been able to stay conscious." The nocturne turned towards two hooded dragons. "Get something to wake her up," she ordered. The two left without saying a word. The nocturne turned to face Biohazard and Squash. "You two are staying with me until she wakes up. If you value your life you aren't going to make any move to escape." Biohazard looked at Squash who stared back in silence. There was no getaway plan, especially not when their clanmate and friend was injured. The two hooded figures came back, one carrying a series of filled flasks. Without even saying anything, the one with the flasks on them grabbed Gloaming - which was easy since she was a Fae, and poured a red liquid from one of the flasks. "That's a minor potion," Biohazard whispered to Squash. Her eyes focused on a flask filled with a golden liquid. "Those ones are major potions. I'm guessing they don't want to waste resources on us." If the nocturne or her minions had heard Biohazard's comment, they didn't mention it, or react to it. A couple moments later and Gloaming blinked open her eyes. Whoever was holding her loosened their grip, allowing her to regain her position among the other two. "Wha-" Her initial reaction got cut short as soon as she saw where she was. "You're Thana." A claw extended, she pointed it at the nocturne. The nocturne let smirk appear on her face. "And what of that?" "You're the one who took the hatchlings and turned on your own sister!" Squash exclaimed. "You're a dragon of interest and you're keeping young dragons hostage!" Thana let out a laugh. Not an ill-spirited one, but more of a mocking one. "Do you, do you know what you sound like right now? Go on," she motioned to dragon with nothing on them. "Show him. Give us an impression!" With a nod, the cloaked dragon's form soon began to shift, features changing until they became a comepletly identical copy of Squash. "I'm a ridgeback that doesn't understand the meaning of shutting up!" The imposter posing as Squash laughed. "Wow, rude." Biohazard commented. "Wow, rude." The other imposter turned into Biohazard, echoing her words. Gloaming looked at the second imposter, eyes widening a bit. "Aren't you Mirage?" "Who?" Four voices answered her question. She didn't really care which four they were. "That one imposter that took the role of Midnight last year. Kind of made friends then tried to get all close with a few of e wrong family members who outed you so you left." "Oh yeah, that was me, so what?" Before anyone could answer, Thana stepped in. "ENOUGH!" An eerie silence came to after her command. She began to walk forward, eyes locked onto Gloaming. "It's become clear to me you're the one heading this little operation. So tell me, why are you here?" Biohazard looked at Gloaming, waiting for her to answer. All eyes were soon on the Fae. "Your sister sent us. She wants the hatchlings back." No matter how calm she may have looked saying that, she wasn't. Only her fellow fae would have been able to see it, but her speech was laced with fear. It was the truth, but she didn't know how Thana would react to it. Thana's eyes widened, before she regained her composure. "How dare she call us sisters. I refuse to go back to her clan," Thana hissed. "After all," she continued, voice becoming less hostile, "I like it here." "Yeah just give us the hatchlings and we'll be on our way," Biohazard interrupted, before looking at Gloaming. "That's what we came for right?" Gloaming nodded. Biohazard looked at Thana confidently as she waited for the request to be met. Thana scoffed. "Why would I do that? I honestly think I did those hatchlings a favour by bringing them here." "Do you even really want them though?" Squash shouted. "What purpose does it bring to have them here?" Thana shrugged. "Better useless to me then an asset to her." "But they could become useful to you if you gave them back and waited!" Biohazard said. Gloaming looked at her, curious as to what she was trying to do. Trust me. She got that look back from her friend, and decided to hope Biohazard knew what she was doing. Thana seemed just as intrigued as Gloaming was. "Tell me how that would work, and I'll consider it." "Okay, so... I don't know if you're gonna tell me the actual motive behind your actions but because I don't know I'm going to assume it's some elaborate revenge or spite scheme. I know kidnapping hatchlings to turn against your - I mean Shadowsong, sounds like the easy route and the quickest, and practical - but you should wait." "Get to the point." "Wait for them to grow up a little bit, then take them. They've seen your face, but I highly doubt they'll know much about the intent of the encounter. Let them mature so they know more about the singers and then take them." "I don't see your point." "If you're lucky they'll dislike being singers and seek you out, but with more up to date knowledge on how the clan works. If they really like the way their life was going then expose Shadowsong or something, I'll leave that up to you. Tell them they were used or something so you saved them. Dragons driven by anger are more motivated than none, but that can only happen if you give them to us now." Thana looked taken aback at what Biohazard was saying. "Who are you? You ally yourself with Shadowsong only to propose an alternative method for myself. Both of your clanmates trust you to help them regardless of this. What are you trying to do?" "She's satisfying both you and Shadowsong?" Squash answered. "That is what you're doing, right?" "Just please give us the hatchlings. You're pretty smart I'm sure you'll figure it out." Gloaming didn't know what Biohazard was doing, and couldn't wait to ask her. They just needed the two young singers first. Thana looked at Biohazard. "I'll give you one. Let it be known I'll be back to retrieve this singer once the right age. The other stays with me. My belief in your idea is low, but could bring good results should it work. Guards! Escort them to where the hatchlings are being kept. Give them one, and see them out." The two imposters, who had changed into what looked like black versions of the breeds they were previously in, motioned for the three of them to follow. The nameless imposter, who had previously been in the form of Squash, handed the nocturne in shades of blue to Squash. "Distract them." She could hear Biohazard whisper. Looking over her shoulder, the fae had seemingly teleported over to where Squash was. Gloaming turned back, and saw Mirage standing idle as the impostor's partner handled the hatchlings. "Hey, Mirage!" Getting the attention of the impostor, Mirage whippped around to face her. "What." "...Why do you follow Thana?" It was a random question, and she hoped it would be good enough to stall. "What's it to you?" "If another impostor decided to turn into Thana, would you just follow them?" "I feel it highly unlikely that would happen." "But if it did?" "Why do you care?" "I'm a scholar. I like to learn." "With that mentality you would make a good impostor, if you could drop the monotone." "It's a breed thing." "Gloaming! Let's go!" Squash and Biohazard stood waiting with the nocturne. Without a second look towards Mirage, she left to join them. The three of them took flight, nocturne being carried by the ridgeback. As they took flight, the two impostors left the second hatchling alone. Gloaming blinked and suddenly the second hatchling was gone. Then there were two on Squash. "I needed you as a distraction so I could create the illusion that the other hatchling was there," Biohazard explained as they flew back to Shadowsong. "They'll be annoyed but hopefully they won't trace it back to us." "Oh yeah," Gloaming remembered something as Biohazard spoke. "What were you trying to do with the whole bargain thing? I'm just as confused as Thana with where you were going with it." Biohazard shrugged. "I don't know where I was going with it. I'm astounded it worked. I was just trying to buy Shadowsong a bit of time. We got both hatchlings back. She can deal with what comes next." The three of them delivered both hatchlings, while alerting Shadowsong of what they had done. "You did what you needed to, and for that I am grateful. But now we must prepare for Thana's wrath."

She could hear Biohazard whisper.

"What."
"...Why do you follow Thana?"
It was a random question, and she hoped it would be good enough to stall.
"What's it to you?"
"If another impostor decided to turn into Thana, would you just follow them?"
"I feel it highly unlikely that would happen."
"But if it did?"
"Why do you care?"
"I'm a scholar. I like to learn."
"With that mentality you would make a good impostor, if you could drop the monotone."
"It's a breed thing."

"Gloaming! Let's go!"

Squash and Biohazard stood waiting with the nocturne.

"They'll be annoyed but hopefully they won't trace it back to us."

"Oh yeah," Gloaming remembered something as Biohazard spoke. "What were you trying to do with the whole bargain thing? I'm just as confused as Thana with where you were going with it."

Biohazard shrugged.

"I don't know where I was going with it. I'm astounded it worked. I was just trying to buy Shadowsong a bit of time. We got both hatchlings back. She can deal with what comes next."

The three of them delivered both hatchlings, while alerting Shadowsong of what they had done.

"You did what you needed to, and for that I am grateful. But now we must prepare for Thana's wrath."

Brudigan said, shaking his head and shivering as he saw the elegant Nocturne struggling to free herself from where she was stuck halfway through a tree. Gulmour purred as an Umbra Wolf sat and watched the struggling Nocturne. "Yeah, that's great and all, but we should really get back to Shadowsong." This, from a harried sounding Reshaki as the pair of hatchlings they'd been sent to rescue did their best to try and drag her into play wrestling with them, seemingly heedless of the hissing Nocturne carving chunks out of the bark of the tree as she struggled against it. Not to mention the broken mimics and imposters that had been rendered inanimate by Brudigan's magic. "Indeed. I do hope she'll be up to answering a few questions.
