It was a dark and stormy night. No wait… A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away … no that’s not it either.
The full moons seemed especially bright to Chandra as she flew away from her birth weyr. She was hunting for a special flower tonight – Sacred Datura, also known as Angel’s Trumpet, Moonflower and Moon Lily. With its large icy white blossoms and purple hints of color, she thought she could find some in Shadow, perhaps near the river banks.
After flying for a while, she tasted the scent on the wind. There in the southwest corner of the lands of Emberglo she found several plants with their buds just beginning to open. She landed near the cluster, eager to see the flowers perform their unwinding spiral dance. Their beauty was outstanding; the aura intoxicating. She stood before them through the night, watching as they opened to their fullest attracting Luna and Clouded Miths who drank the nectar. As the sun rose the flowers wilted, faded and shrank away. Chandra knew that darkness would bring forth new buds, already visible on the plants.
After the blooms died and the perfume lessened, Chandra noticed another scent. It was moist and salty – unusual for Shadow. She searched for the source, finally discovering an egg encrusted with barnacles – an unhatched Water egg – tucked under one of the large Datura leaves. She was about to carry it back to her lair when it cracked and a small Guardian fell out of the shell.
The babe was too young to travel far– what would Chandra do? She couldn’t abandon her. Perhaps they could make it to the Emberglo Weyr. Maybe they would adopt her into the lair.
By midday they were both adopted. Chandra had found her own new weyr. The little Guardian had a name: Nyytspirit. She was settled, well fed and fast asleep.
In a few days the young dragon was anxious. She needed to start her Search and wanted to leave. Chandra and Wyldyrn, Matriarch of the weyr, wanted her to stay. They knew there was something very special about her.
Wyldyrn had an idea. They explained to the young Guardian why they wanted her to stay. Then they offered their suggestion – she could change her species which would eliminate her need to locate a Charge. When Nyytspirit chose to become a Bogsneak, the clan’s alchemist brewed the required magicks. The change happened. Nyytspirit became a Bogsneak. As an added gift, she was also given three genes to enhance her special colors.
Chandra and Nyytspirit shared the same wing color – Moon and tertiary color - Shadow. They both displayed dark grey bodies. Both of them glowed as if the light of the moons of Sornieth shone upon them. Together with their mates they would found a sub-species. The dragons who shared these colors and genes with them would be known as Moonlit Night dragons. They would honor the night of the full moons with their glowing dark grey bodies, the moon with their shimmering wings and the Datura flower with their tertiary colors. A new sub-species was created.
