One day, beneath the harsh desert sun, two dragon parents sought frantically for a way to save their offspring.
Their nest was a sickly one; the eggs within it had failed to thrive. Medicine had failed them, so in desperation their parents turned to magic.
An old book, musty and long-forgotten, told the parents of a secret which might save their young. It spoke of a ritual that would save them, if its conditions were met. Their hatchlings would survive, and they would be imbued with potent magic unlike any other, but it would come at a price - one that the parents must pay. In order for their lives to be saved, the dusty old book said, the eggs would have to be given over to the sky, forever losing their earthly ties. They would be claimed by no one, beholden to no family but each other.
But such a fate, while lonely, seemed far kinder than death. The parents were willing, and so they performed the ritual.
At first, it seemed like nothing had happened. But as the sun began to dip in the sky, the parents' memories began to waver like disturbed reflections. Gradually, they began to lose themselves - until, as the last light faded from the sky, the parents abandoned the nest, all memories of the hatchlings for which they had sacrificed so much swallowed up by the dark.
The night passed, long and cold, until the first rays of the sun peeked over the horizon. The eggs began to rock in their makeshift nest, as if they had been waiting patiently for that first glimpse of light.

The firstborn sibling, Ithildin, emerged from her egg as the sun rose. She can be found sitting in high places, sunning her wings in the warmth of the new day. A dreamer with lofty goals and high ideals, she is good at motivating others with her words and enjoys being an inspiration to her followers. Her magic is strongest in the morning, and she has an almost hypnotic voice - when she sings, her runes glow more brightly, and few dragons are unable to avoid falling under her spell.

Euphranor's world is made up of shades of gray, and the bone magic he specializes in also has its darker aspects. For that reason, Euphranor imposes order on his life and his magic by adhering to a strict moral code that stresses both compassion and non-interference.
Like the siblings from which they are descended, Dawnguard dragons draw their power from the sun. Their magic is at its most powerful when the sun aligns with the time of day they were born. The blood spell that runs through their line has produced generations of powerful practitioners with unique magical abilities - abilities that can be passed down to their descendants, if one is willing to make a sacrifice...

[*]All official Dawnguard dragons must be descended from one of the three founding siblings, Ithildin, Apollon, and Euphranor.
[*]Dawnguard dragons have a generation number that shows how distantly related they are to the founders. Ithildin, Apollon, and Euphranor are Generation 0; their children are Generation 1, their grandchildren are Generation 2, and so on.
[*]The primary, secondary, and tertiary ranges of Dawnguard dragons are from Goldenrod to Blush. All primary and secondary genes are acceptable, but the tertiary must be Runes, Glimmer, Opal, or Filigree.
[*]In order to qualify as a Dawnguard dragon, the non-Dawnguard parent of the hatchlings must be exalted, sold, traded away, gifted to another player, or otherwise leave your lair. The use of studs is acceptable for producing Dawnguard hatchlings, but no breeding between a Dawnguard and a stud should be repeated. Every nest should be unique!
[*]Dawnguard dragons can be part of a regular breeding pair, but hatchlings produced by permanent breeding pairs are not eligible to be part of the Dawnguard family tree.

The dragons of the Dawnguard lineage specialize in three types of magic, also known as Affinities: Word, Blood, and Bone. While they are capable of learning and practicing many other magical disciplines, they will always have a knack for performing magic that is based around the Affinity they are born with.
Dragons from the Sunrise line are usually born with a strong Affinity for Word magic. Word magic draws on the strength of the mind, and is tailored to spells and enchantments that must be spoken or written. Magic circles, protective runecharms, and incantations are all forms of Word magic. Dragons with an Affinity for Word magic are typically charismatic and persuasive, and are frequently able to exert a strong pull on the minds of others. Word magic is strengthened by faith; the greater a dragon’s belief in the spell they are performing, the more powerful the results will be. The use of a dragon’s name will strengthen the effect of a Word-aligned spell performed on that individual.
Dragons from the Sunset line are usually born with a strong Affinity for Blood magic. Word magic draws on the strength of the spirit, and is geared toward spells and enchantments that require ritual and sacrifice. Blood spells, energy work, and ritual sacrifices are all forms of Blood magic. Dragons with an Affinity for Blood magic are typically empathetic and sincere, and have a knack for touching the hearts of others. Blood magic is strengthened by sincerity; the more closely a spell aligns with the caster’s inner desires, the more powerful the spell will become. The use of a dragon’s blood will strengthen the effect of a Blood-aligned spell performed on that individual.
Dragons from the Twilight line are usually born with a strong Affinity for Bone magic. Bone magic draws on the strength of the body, and is geared toward spells and enchantments that affect a dragon’s physical form. Thaumaturgy, magical augmentations, and necromancy are all forms of Bone magic. Dragons with an Affinity for Bone magic are typically resilient and self-disciplined, and have a knack for motivating the actions of others. Bone magic is strengthened by conviction; the more certain a caster is in the necessity of a spell, the stronger the spell will become. The use of a dragon’s bones, teeth, or scales will strengthen the effect of a Bone-aligned spell performed on that individual.
Determining Your Dawnguard’s Affinity
The magical Affinities of Dawnguard hatchlings are highly mutable when they are born and the bloodline curse is fresh, but as they age their abilities begin to crystallize. By the time Dawnguard dragons reach adulthood, their affinities are set and cannot be changed.
Most Dawnguard dragons have the same Affinity as other dragons in their line. However, this is not always the case. Sometimes a Sunrise dragon will become a necromancer; other times, a twilight-born dragon will show an Affinity for Blood magic. There is still debate within the family about how exactly magical abilities are passed down. While the role of heritage is unmistakable, there may also be environmental factors that act to influence the Affinities of Dawnguard hatchlings.
There are three ways to determine the magical Affinity of a Dawnguard hatchling. The first method is the default; however, the other two methods may be used to determine a different Affinity for the dragon.
- The simplest way to determine Affinity is to use the Affinity that is passed through your hatchling’s line. This means that Sunrise hatchlings will specialize in Word magic, Sunset hatchlings will specialize in Blood magic, and Twilight hatchlings will specialize in Bone magic. This is the default method through which Affinities are determined.
- The buyer of the hatchling can choose to change the Affinity of their hatchling to the one they want.

Remember that determining Affinities via RNG is supposed to be a fun way to jump-start lore ideas and isn’t intended to be binding! As long as your Dawnguard is still a hatchling, the buyer of the dragon is free to change its Affinity to the one they like best. However, if you choose to use the RNG, please don’t continue to reroll until you get the results you’re hoping for. It takes the randomness and guesswork out, and isn’t necessary since Affinities can still be changed by the hatchling’s new owner.
- To initialize the RNG, set your minimum value to 1 and your maximum value to 11. The range of possible numbers will be from 1 to 11, representing the eleven flights of Sornieth.
- Click the “Generate” button to receive a randomly-generated number. Interpret the number using the criteria below to determine your results.
- A randomly-generated value of 1, 2, or 3 corresponds to a Word Affinity.
- A randomly-generated value of 4, 5, or 6 corresponds to a Blood Affinity.
- A randomly-generated value of 7, 8, or 9 corresponds to a Bone Affinity.
