Strange things indeed, that here on Levitos, the string of events are as unchanging as the sea. The merry tunes of gondoliers are overpowered by the rowdy song of the city's new guests. Their mighty vessels groan and sway, with masts that rise from the morning fog and sails that carry wind from isles beyond. Sets of eyes watch from the shadows of the deck, of which the ship's crew will let none pass. Might there lie treasure within the hull? Or could some long-forgotten treasure sit idly beneath the sands?

The feared pirate captain Socotra lands on the deck with a thud, her entrance drawing gasps from those more easily startled. "Aye, what's this? Some sort of pirate fashion show? What miserable bilge-bottom dragon didn't see fit to invite [i]me?[/i]"
She struts forward to take her place beside Mordred, grinning expectantly at her onlookers. "Well? Who wears it better? This poor sod, or me?"
"Come on, skulls? Don't you think that's a bit over the top," she continues. "I mean, we're [i]pirates,[/i] for Tidelord's sake, not--"
She's cut off by an indignant hiss from the cat perched upon Mordred's head. Socotra blinks twice, her train of thought disrupted, and ruffles her wings awkwardly.

HOI struts through the crowd, a bright grin on his face. "Raise the mizzenmast!" He bellows, at no one in particular. "Hoist the mainsail! AVAST!" He rears back on his hind legs and draws his cutlass, pointing it at some poor sap who just happened to be in the way. "Be ye a [i]sailor,[/i] matey?"
The parrot perched on his shoulder flaps its wings, squawking angrily, clearly displeased by the sudden jostling. HOI tucks his wings against his back and sheathes his cutlass. Whoever he'd picked out scurries away as he tries to calm his bird - not that he's doing a good job in that department, considering he's still shouting as he makes attempts to soothe the parrot. He adjusts his eyepatch (to no avail) while doing so, peeking over it at the small bird.
It's likely this snapper hasn't sailed the sea a single day in his life, aside from the trip to get from the mainland to Levitos; but he's trying his best to look the part!
((Can I just say how much it amuses me that all of the pirates so far have red aviator coats? it makes such a good captain coat!))

Standing up on the stage next to the Skydancer and the Imperial, Kix felt much more confident than the last time he was at the Pageant. He wasn't late this time, at least! He already looked like a pirate generally, and for all he knew he had been a pirate at one stage, given his lack of memories. Glancing at the strutting Skydancer beside him, he suddenly remembered his dream from the night before.
There had been a red Skydancer in that dream who looked eerily similar to the pirate captain beside him, and a large Bogsneak, and a Wildclaw so covered with red armour their true appearance was hidden. The Wildcalw had been the leader of the pirate crew, and he was working with them, helping them find lost treasures. He distinctly remembered flying to the top of the rigging and seeing a landmark - he thought he remembered it being a mountain - and telling them to sail towards it. As far as dreams went, it had been quite fun, and they had made it to the treasure in the end.
Shaking his head, Kix brought his mind back to the present. He was fairly sure what he remembered was a dream, but had a niggling feeling it might not be completely made up in his mind. Fluffing out his mane, he stepped towards the pirate captain and said, "Stop being so dramatic. You're distracting everyone from the other contestants, and that's not fair."

The picturesque Victorian setting peels back in favor of a rougher, darker atmosphere, and the bright lanterns dim into blown-glass baubles that dangle from scaled tails. Steam spills into the tainted air, and the waters have gone turbulent by some unseen force. A plague outbreak? A legendary creature of the endless blue? For why should the city fall into eclipse, if not for the end of the world?
