TOPIC | Violetah's Breed Out the Ugly Challenge
I've decided to do a breed out the ugly challenge, and to show the world each generation's story this thread has been created. Each generation will have a story, but it might not be written until after the next generation has hatched, depending on how busy I am. The rules of the challenge (taken from the thread):
[s]1. Go to the Auction House and purchase the ugliest dragon you can find. Preferably, the dragon will be of your least favorite breed/gender combination, have colors that make your eyes bleed, and a set of genes that make you wonder who let their pet monkey play this game. Basically, this dragon has to be one you'd grab literally ONLY to Exalt. The one restriction on selecting your founder is that they must be triple-gened. Everything else is allowed. Ultimately, this dragon will be your founder.[/s] Using one I bred, but he is also one that was only bred to exalt. 2. Find this dragon a mate. This time, there are no restrictions other than that it has to be breedable with your founder either immediately, once s/he ages up, or loses the breeding cooldown. (In other words, if your founder is male then his mate must be female, or vice versa.) Unlike with your founder, this dragon can be as beautiful as you like! Knock yourself out! NOTICE: You cannot use the Foresee Progeny tool in the Scrying Workshop as you look for a potential mate for your founder or their future heirs! Part of the challenge is going with your gut feeling. However, once you have purchased the mate and made your permanent decision for that generation, you may use the Foresee Progeny tool as much as you like. Optional Rule: The mates you select for your founder and their heirs must also be triple-gened. 3. When they're ready, breed them together. If their nest has 2-5 eggs in it, then congratulations! Chose your heir from this nest. 4. Find a mate for your heir much like you did for your founder in #2. Repeat #3. 5. Repeat #4 as many generations as it takes to get a dragon you would permanently keep. At that point, the challenge is over and you have won! OPTIONAL SCORING SYSTEM: Quote: +1 for every hatchling that gets two colors that look pleasant together; additional +2 if it's your heir. +1 for every hatchling that gets two genes that look pleasant together; additional +2 if it's your heir. +3 for every hatchling that gets three colors that look pleasant together; additional +2 if it's your heir. +3 for every hatchling that gets three genes that look pleasant together; additional +2 if it's your heir. Note: All of these can stack. So if your heir has two colors and two genes that look good together, then you add 1+1+2 = 4 points for that one dragon! +10 for every generation below the 10th where you decide that the challenge is over and you have a permanent, beautiful dragon who was originally bred from your founder! -5 for every generation past the 10th where you decide that the challenge is over.
Additional Rules: When selecting the heir these are the conditions, in order: If mate already is selected, chose heir that can mate with them. If none-> Go for the dragon with the gene/breed upgrade. If none-> Go for dragon close to end goal. If none-> Go for the ugliest hatchling. All dragons bought must be below 10k, and their cost must be recorded, with the profit from the sales of hatchlings also being recorded. When buying the mate, only select dragons that you wouldn't usually go for, not necessarily ugly, but not your taste. All dragons must have a secondary of a higher rarity, because we are breeding for a gem gene. The desired end result: My end goal is a mate for this dragon. He's have to be either a Skydancer or Mirror, with a prim range lemon-banana, a sec range amber-yellow and a tert range carmine-berry. He's also have to have a Butterfly or Spinner sec, but I don't know about his other genes. Here is the first generation: The Ugly Starter: Libertas: Slate Tiger/Rust Seraph/Fuchsia Thylacine The youngest child of Ozaki and Viola's first clutch, he is spoilt rotten by the clan and acts as though he is unaware of his clashing colours. He is a loud-mouth, but so are his siblings, and what sets him apart is his romantic nature. He believes in true love, and dreams of the day he finds his soulmate. He is quite noble, if in a pushy kind of way. (Hatched him myself, but will cost me 7.5k for not selling him) His mate: Bonus: Grapefruit Crystal/Banana Facet/Fire Underbelly A young dragon, she wishes for nothing less than being treated like a queen. Her short temper, combined with a lack of patience, sent her leaving he clan as soon as she was old enough, looking to start her own pack. She hates the water, like most Fire dragons, and was quite annoyed when a Talonok attack forced her to turn Brek's clan for help. Initially she wanted to leave as soon as possible, but the attentions of a young Ridgeback, his desires to help her with anything she wants, has caused her to linger. She is curious to see if this youngster will be able to help her start her own pack. Cost 9.5K Their Story: Still a WIP

The next generation has arrived! Four children total, three boys and a girl. As the mate for the heir was bought previously (a child from another breed out the ugly challenge), I have chosen the girl. She's also the only only one to be a Ridgeback, taking after her father. I'm really happy with this clutch, they are much prettier than either of their parents. Their eldest, Proza: Ivory/Orange/Chocolate male Their second son, Secur: Ivory/Pumpkin/Soil male The third child, Gen: Bronze/Auburn/Umber male The heir: Libera: Sanddollar/Orange/Taupe female The youngest of her siblings, she was the only Ridgeback. While she loved her extended family, she often wondered about her mother. She loved to read and create stories, becoming close to 'Auntie' Rook, and often imagined herself as a princess. In these stories she saw her father as a noble knight, married to an evil princess who left the kingdom after attempting a coup. So when she finally did leave her home to search for what happened to her mother it was no surprise that she pretended to be a runaway princess. The mate Nemor: Banana Poison/Ice Butterfly/Blush Underbelly Born in the Arcanist's lands, this youngster knows a thing or two about 'ugly'. His father was born with an unfortunate colour combination, and he himself could be considered to have had the same thing happen to him. He doesn't let it bother him, what other people think. Appearances don't matter, do they? It's ones personality that really matters, and he works to make his the best, whatever that means. He tries to be kind, to be considerate and to watch out for others, but all he wants to do is run and play, to hunt and to fight. Once he reached adulthood he left his magic rich home, and eventually settled down on a small coral island in the Sea of a Thousand Currents. While he may be alone, he doesn't feel lonely, as he has his imagination, and a lot of books, to keep him company. Cost 10k. Their story: WIP

It seems like big families run in the blood! Libera and Nemor have welcomed a whooping clutch of five! Again, there was only one daughter, and again she's my heir because I bought a mate for her before the parents had even got off cooldown. The eldest, Yaminah: Banana/Brown/Dirt male The second eldest, and the heir, Marie: Banana/Tangerine/Copper female The second eldest of her clutch, she, like her mother, was the only girl. Her parents, being of a scholarly bent taught her well on the coral island they lived on. She and her brothers learned honour, how to fight and how to heal. As an adolescent she set out from her home, desiring to be a knight in shining armour, protecting the innocent from harm. In her travels she met another like-minded individual, a Tundra called Dart. Eventually she returned home, but she found the island abandoned. She had not expected her brothers to be here, for when she set out to journey, they set out to join the Tidelord, but she was surprised she couldn't find here parents. Looking through what they had left behind, she found a note telling her they had left to journey the world, and she should not expect them back anytime soon. With Dart, she decided to set up a school that would teach young dragons in the art of being a knight, on the very island she had grown up on. Their third child, Cordoz: Sanddollar/Umber/Cherry male The forth child, Artan: Banana/Red/Soil male And the fifth child, Typhon: Banana/Terracotta/Carmine male The mate Dart: Flaxen Skink/Lemon Spinner/Cantaloupe Underbelly Youngest of his siblings, he's always trying to be the best. Calls himself d'Artagnan, wants to be like the character from an ancient text he and his brothers were named after. He has a tendency to act first and think later, and to think he can do things that he doesn't have the skills to do. However, he is talented using swords and magic, and is a honorable warrior. Calls himself a musketeer, even though he doesn't have a king to serve. Very charming, gets along well with the ladies, but often people see him as a child that is trying to be an adult. Costs 5k. The next generation has come (quite a while ago now), and Marie and Dart only had a tiny clutch of two. Both were daughters, and Briscestbvetse was the heir, with Umbafattir the spare. The elder daughter, Umbafattir: Flaxen/Marigold/Copper Called Flower at hatching, she was raised by her mother as her father had been killed protecting the nest. Once she and her sister reached adulthood they set out to live somewhere else, ending up in the Fortress of Ends where they changed their names, hers now meaning 'Flowermoon', and trained as guards. Once they finished training, she left to find her own destiny. The younger daughter, and the heir, Briscestbvetse: Sanddollar/Terracotta/Driftwood Hatching alongside a Tundra by the name of Flower, she was called Dawn at birth. She came to the world at a time of tragedy, as her mother, a knight, had been away from the school she ran with her mate during a training exercise had and returned to see the place in ruins, with her mate's limp body on top of their nest. Dart wasn't the only victim of whatever had attacked, two more of their students, Moon and Nonne, had been slayed, but it was the most devastating loss. A few hours after the funerals had occurred the eggs hatched, protected by their father to his final breath. She and her sister were raised almost singlehandedly by her mother, and given the same tutelage and training as the other students. They weren't just taught how to fight, but also about honour and the legends of the past, becoming eloquent young ladies who could easily defend themselves. When they reached adulthood and their training was complete they eventually bid their mother goodbye and travelled together to live somewhere else. They ended up at the Fortress of Ends and trained as guards there, changing their names to fit in better. She became Briscestbvetse, which was Common Draconic for 'Whitedawn', while her sister became Umbafattir, 'Flowermoon'. They were well trained, and maintained their honourable nature, but once they finished their training Umbafattir became restless again and left. During her time with the clan Briscestbvetse became close to the healer Lireloham, but the Skydancer never seemed to return her affection, but now without her sister she put more energy in maintaining and increasing her relationship with him. Personality wise she is a generally cheerful and happy dragon, not letting life get her down, and likes to tease others in a friendly way. She makes a funny counterpoint to Lireloham, but they do say opposites attract. He is a well studied dragon, knowing much, but is quite aloof. He doesn't like dealing with others and gives the not entirely inaccurate feeling that he'd much rather be with his scrolls and herbs than around other dragons. He isn't very emotional overall, which isn't surprising given both his element and where he grew up, but is still often seen with a small smile on his lips, half-hidden by his mask and hood. He has a very harsh sense of justice, surprising for one vowed to help others, and will not treat criminals. He also has no problem attacking anyone who tries to steal his stuff, or by dragons getting injured while being caught for their crimes. When he is forced to be around other dragons he has a very dry wit, but at the same time he laughs at anything, no matter how bad the joke. Cost 7.5k

Briscest and Lireloh have also had their children, and I seriously think that big families really do run in this bloodline. Two boys, two girls and one Skydancer! All of them managed to turn out pretty, and I'm so tempted to stop here with the heir, but the project must go on. He's not quite the right colours, but he's pretty close. The eldest baby, and the heir, Lohamnvao: Buttercup/Sunshine/Tomato Born at the Fortress of Ends, he was never very close to his siblings. They trained as warriors, but he was also trained in the ways of a knight, so when he had completed his training he decided that he would become a travelling knight, rather than a prison guard. Due to this he ranged far over Sornieth, generally being well received but some being wary of the fact her was alone. He protected the helpless and saved fair damsels, but his skill with the sword and his claws could not protect him from the most implacable enemy he would encounter; disease. As an Ice dragon he was ill suited to the hotter regions, and while he was travelling through the Viridian Labyrinth the hotter, humid environment caused him to contract an infection that sapped away at his strength. Weakening and becoming unable to hunt, he eventually made his way to the beach between Plague and Water. Expecting some scavenger or vicious Plague dragon to take advantage of his helpless state, he was surprised when a brightly coloured masked Snapper found him instead and took him back to her den. She cured him using a mix of magic and medicine, and when he got better she let him stay with her, at least until he paid he debt of gratitude for her saving his life. They stayed travelling partners beyond the point at which the debt had been paid, because he felt he would do more good helping her cure the sick than he would alone. Plus, these lands were well known for their bandits that would attack a lone dragon, even one as sturdy as a Snapper. There was also the fact he tended to catch any respiratory disease floating around, his immune system really not able to keep up in the more humid air. She even called him her little 'Petri dish', a term he eventually realised was affectionate, as she found his infections to be quite useful for her research. When Akhekhu proposed they have a nest initially he was confused, because they weren't mates, but he eventually agreed to it when she explained it was to help her understand both egg development and how hatchlings contracted diseases. They laid that nest at the same beach where they had met, which wasn't the best idea as the Tidelord's magic was stronger there than the Plaguebringer's, so the hatchlings were of the Water element, something he isn't so sure about. She was naturally immune to many virulent diseases, her magic meaning her could inactivate them at will, but not everything. Within a few weeks of hatching a magically charged strain of bacteria swept through the territory, and she became its only victim. The disease she contracted 'ate' away at the left side of her face, leaving it sunken and lumpy and her eye half-blind. It eventually spread to her neck and back, causing the plates there to grow lumpy and misshapen, and for it to threaten her life. The only reason she survived was that a Arcanite came across her family, and with her parent's permission used their magic and herbal knowledge to cure her of the bacteria. It is this reason she wears a mask, because she didn't like the attention her odd appearance gave her, and the reason she is fascinated by disease. As she grew up, she became fascinated by how agents of disease worked, but even more so she was fascinated by magic and how it interacted with disease, all because of the bacteria that had nearly taken her life. She left her clan once she reached adulthood and travelled to the Arcane territories to learn, then returned to the Plaguelands to continue her research. She found Lohamnvao on the beach between Plague and Water, and helped him recover from the infection he contracted when he was travelling through the Viridian Labyrinth. They ended up sticking together, him helping protect her as she researched and used her knowledge to cure those to came to her for help. They ended up having a nest on the beach them met, which is why the offspring were of the Water element, purely for research. She wanted to see how magically conceived eggs developed compared to those created in other ways, and if this had any impact on the hatchling's resistance to disease. Not like she would cause her children to become infected, but she knows that the immune system of hatchlings is not as robust as that of an adult, and they would get some kinds of infections growing up, so she wanted to see that process for herself. Cost 10k.
