The Legend
There is a rumor...
Perhaps it is just a local legend, but few dragons or members of the beastclans dare to venture into the dense, evergreen forests of the Snowsquall Tundra. In particular, the northern woodlands, between the Frigid Floes and the Cloudscrape Crags. That area in particular is known to be haunted.
How do they know? "Haunted" sounds a little far-fetched, doesn't it? Well, there have been eye accounts to the ghosts living there, creeping in and disappearing like a late night fog.
Skeptics claim that the witnesses were seeing things -- some trick of the light, or perhaps they mistook the ghosts for a more plausible creature. Even so, however, wandering to such wilds is ill-advised, and even the skeptics aren't sure enough to venture there.
The Pack
Few dragons know the truth about this legend, which has only recently been established. The fact is that there really is a pack of ghosts out there...kind of.
Really, it's a pack of mirrors who look very ghostlike and who move about like specters. They also do claim to be ghosts, and many even believe that they are. However, they're as corporeal as any other. Just don't tell them that.
Or do. These "ghosts" are actually not malicious at all. In fact, their patriarch -- known in the tales as the Ghost King Idolon -- is quirky and has a screw or two loose, but is otherwise harmless and, in fact, friendly (even when he's attempting to be spooky.) In all likelihood, the worst that'll happen to you is that you'll wind up "haunted." That is, for the remainder of the duration of your stay in the ghosts' territory, Idolon will organize his pack and attempt to scare you with tricks, such as suddenly jumping at you from the shadows with a loud hiss and flared ears, or creating cold spots for you to walk into. (That is, cold even for the Southern Icefield. So, that's cold!) After all, the pack has an image to maintain. Not to mention that Idolon sincerely believes he's a ghost, and feels the need to prove it if one of the living won't believe him.
Why the image, you ask? Well, while Idolon himself doesn't mind getting to know other dragons -- corporeal or not -- is because of an agreement he has with his neighboring clan. Well, "neighboring" may not be the right word. The territory of the Clan of Hiemisfatum overlaps with the territory of the ghost pack. The two groups wound up forming an alliance, so the ghost pack can make use of the clan's resources, and the rumor of ghosts helps protect the clan from invaders. The two groups are on very friendly terms, and it was actually the leader of the clan who gave Idolon his name. (Idolon hasn't decided what to call himself, so the name Hiemisfatum gave him is the name that got around.) Idolon's mate and first hatchling also got "clan names" (each member of Hiemis' clan gets one upon joining.) EchoPlasma, Idolon's mate, is known as Ressomnus, and their eldest daughter, Willow, is known as Laterna. Discounting Idolon's, the ghosts' clan names aren't known outside of Hiemis' clan and the ghost pack.
Despite the pack's close, familial nature, there are members who choose to leave. No one tries to stop them, either, and, in fact, there is a member of the pack designated to show them along their way. That is the first daughter of the pack: Willow, known as "Willow the Wisp." Her job is to guide her younger siblings to their new resting places (that is, "homes") so that the restless spirits can safely find peace. Willow, herself, is rather good at keeping herself unseen from "mortal" eyes, and so only glimpses of her have ever been seen by dragons outside of the pack. There is one exception, though, since she doesn't try to hide herself from the Clan of Hiemisfatum.

Or, being a dragon who developed such delusions him/herself, or just likes to take advantage of his/her appearance to pretend to be a ghost. |
True Ghost Variant Breed: Mirror Gender: Any Eyes: Ice (preferred), Lightning, Nature, Wind, Water, Plague Primary Color: Pistachio Primary Genes: Basic, Iridescent, Jupiter, Tapir, Bar, Clown, Leopard, Python, Ripple, Tiger Secondary Colors: Jade, Spearmint Secondary Genes: Current, Saturn, Safari, Bee, Striation, Blend (Jade only), Daub, Marbled (Jade only), Morph, Noxtide, Peregrine Tertiary Colors: Denim to Swamp (excluding Shamrock) Tertiary Genes: Spines (Nature ONLY), Thylacine, Smoke, Firefly, Glowtail, Lace, Ringlets, Smirch, Veined Lore: This dragon either used to be a Pack Ghost but then died (or became a spirit/phantom/whatever in some other way) or was a spirit of some sort that wound up looking like a Pack Ghost. Immediately recognized by living Pack Ghosts as fellow Pack Ghosts, and they don't usually recognize the difference between themselves and their undead brethren (mostly because they think that they're dead, too.) |
Pack Ghoul Breed: Mirror Gender: Any Eyes: Plague, Earth, Nature Primary Color: Seafoam Primary Gene: Iridescent Secondary Color: Algae Secondary Genes: Current, Daub, Freckle, Shimmer, Stripes Tertiary Color: White Tertiary Gene: Spines, Ghost, Scales Lore: The sworn enemies and natural predators of the Pack Ghosts. Their conflict is as legendary (among themselves -- not many outsiders actually know about it, which easily comes as a surprise to some of the more eccentric Pack Ghosts and Ghouls) as the one between the Plaguebringer and the Gladekeeper. Pack Ghouls, in actuality, are just as alive and well as Pack Ghosts -- and just as certain that they're undead. Pack Ghouls hunt Pack Ghosts -- their conflict is particularly intense in the Viridian Labyrinth, as both tend to live there -- in order to consume them. (In actuality, this results in harmless, toothless nomming, if one does manage to pin one down.) While Pack Ghosts are the "spirit" of one undead, Pack Ghouls are the corpse, and have gained a glistening residue all over their bodies, as well as an exposed skull and matching backbone spines. Their wings are also often dirty and rotting. Or so they believe, or pretend to believe. If the Pack Ghoul is aware that they're actually alive, they are just as likely to know that the Pack Ghosts are, too, and vise-versa. These Pack Ghouls tend to be into the facade for the fun of it, and are usually more competitive or playful than most Pack Ghosts, which are usually either apathetic or delusional. Pack Ghouls tend to run in packs -- albeit smaller ones than the Ghosts they hunt -- or are loners. If a large pack of Ghouls forms, it splits very quickly. Though Pack Ghouls are considered a variant of the Pack Ghost by the world at large, (or at least those who know about them; they're not as common as Pack Ghosts) Pack Ghouls and Pack Ghosts consider themselves entirely different subspecies -- or even different creatures altogether. Pack Ghouls also hate the preserving nature of Ice, and so never venture into the Souther Icefield if they can help it. They also severely dislike Fire, but to a much lesser extent. Abilities: Pack Ghouls do not have the same abilities as Pack Ghosts, (excluding Nature Pack Ghouls) because of a lack of shared elements. Plague Pack Ghouls tend to fester more than other Pack Ghouls, and so disease clings to them. They are living bio hazards (when they choose to be) and are dangerous for non-Plague dragons to be around. Earth Pack Ghouls are particularly good at digging, and lying in wait partially buried underground. This hunting technique is similar to that of crocodilians, but in the ground rather than in water. |
Hybrids This section is for official Pack Ghost/Other hybrid specifications. Decaying Skeletons Hybrid Name: Decaying Ghosts Breed: Mirror Gender: Any Eyes: Plague is most common, but any element can fit into this depending on whether the dragon was, lore-wise, a Pack Ghost or a Decaying Skeleton first Primary Color: Pistachio Primary Gene: Iridescent Secondary Color: Eldritch Secondary Genes: Current, Saturn Tertiary Color: Maize to Moon Tertiary Gene: Scales Lore: Pack Ghosts who have succumbed to the same ailment as Decaying Skeletons, or Decaying Skeletons who gain the delusions of Pack Ghosts. (There is currently no Pack Ghoul version of this, but that may change.) An Absolute Pack Ghost who becomes this hybrid is exceptionally rare. |
Other Variants/Hybrids may be discovered/specified in time.
Desirable Qualities - "Misty" Pack Ghosts have Jupiter, Saturn, and Smoke genes. Having all 3 is considered desirable among Pack Ghosts, especially of the Ice or Wind elements. - Pack Ghosts who seem to display "tricks of the light" have the rare iridescent gene. - Nature Pack Ghosts with spines are respected among other Pack Ghosts. - Lightning Pack Ghosts with Cyan tertiary genes are revered among other Lightning Pack Ghosts. Abilities Depending on your Pack Ghost's element (Ice, Lightning, Nature, or Wind), he or she will have the following ability. This applies to both Absolutes and Variants. Ice is the most common element. Ice: Creating cold spots. Lightning: Manipulating energy. Nature: Being venomous. Wind: Being especially wispy. In addition to these, all Pack Ghosts are relatively good at sneaking around, and being quiet. Furthermore, being Mirrors, they are capable of seeing both normally, and with thermal vision. This aids them greatly in murky, dark, or otherwise hard-to-see-in conditions. This is especially advantageous to Ice dragons, who can confuse other Mirrors with their ability to wield the cold. |

Q&A
Q: Where can I get a Pack Ghost?
A: I breed Idolon and EchoPlasma to make Absolute Pack Ghosts. There are usually Pack Ghosts available in my hatchery, so feel free to ask to be put on their pinglist. Also, other hatcheries or breeding pairs will be listed on this thread.
Q: I want to breed Pack Ghosts! But am I allowed to?
A: Of course! Just make sure to follow the requirements, and to label your ghosts properly. (I.e., as a General Variant and what makes your ghost pair a variant pair.) Also, I'd appreciate it if you contacted me to tell me about your breeding pair and ask any other questions you may have about them.
Q: I bought a Pack Ghost, but I changed its breed/genes. Is it still a Pack Ghost?
A: In part this depends on who the ghost's parents were. The closer they are to Idolon and EchoPlasma, the tighter their familial bonds will be to them, kind of like how many generations apart dragons have to be for the breeding mechanic. However, technically speaking, the dragon would take a step down from "Absolute." So, if the dragon was already a Variant, it wouldn't be considered a Pack Ghost anymore (provided its genes don't match with "Variant" gene specifications.) If it was an Absolute beforehand, it would become a Variant in lore only. (Known as a "Lore Variant.")
Q: You keep talking about familial bonds. What if my dragon's a rebel who wants to distance him/herself from the family?
A: That's totally up to you (unless the dragon had lore to the contrary beforehand and there was nothing to prompt such a sudden change in heart.) However, that doesn't mean that other Pack Ghosts won't still feel a sense of "one of us" around your dragon.
Q: Does my Pack Ghost have to be living?
A: Pack Ghosts that are actual ghosts would be considered a Hybrid with other ghostly subspecies. Please look here to see which subspecies fits your Hybrid Pack Ghost fits best. Otherwise, it follows the same rules as changing breed/genes.
Q: If my Pack Ghost is listed in your directory and I change something about it that changes its status, or I sell it/exalt it, do I need to tell you about it?
A: Yes, please do. I want to keep this directory up to date, and if another user gets involved, it's important that he or she understands just what they've purchased. (So please let him or her know if you give/trade/sell him/her a Pack Ghost.)
Q: What's a "Lore Variant" and how is it different from a "Variant?"
A: A Lore Variant is a dragon that used to be a Pack Ghost Absolute, but had a gene or breed change that didn't meet the Pack Ghost Variant specifications. A Pack Ghost Absolute that changes its genes to something within the Pack Ghost Variant specifications, but not within the Pack Ghost Absolute specifications, becomes a Pack Ghost Variant. If it changes something but remains within the Pack Ghost Absolute specifications, then it remains a Pack Ghost Absolute. If a Pack Ghost Variant changes its genes/breed to something outside of the Pack Ghost Variant specifications, it ceases to be a Pack Ghost. Pack Ghosts can become Pack Ghouls if their colors/genes change to match Pack Ghoul specifications, but the lore repercussions are huge.
Q: What if I change my dragon's colors?
A: Same as above, to a degree. Just check to see if it still meets the specifications. However, even Pack Ghost Absolutes will cease to be Pack Ghosts if their colors no longer fit the Pack Ghost specifications, and will not become any sort of Variant until the colors meet the criteria again.
Q: I changed my dragon's colors/breed/genes from something else, and now he/she fits Pack Ghost requirements! Can he/she become a Pack Ghost?
A: Yes! Just make sure to find the type that your dragon fits into. (I.e., if the dragon has no genetic relation to Idolon and EchoPlasma, it will be a Variant.)
Q: I have a Pack Ghost breeding pair! Am I allowed to form another pack?
A: Yes! As Pack Ghosts spread throughout Sornieth, it makes sense that some might start their own packs. It also makes sense that dragons with a similar mindset as Idolon would start their own packs. Just make sure to stay true to the specifications for Pack Ghosts listed here.
Q: I have a Ghost Pack! Can my pack ally with/have rivalries with/be enemies with other packs?
A: Of course! Packs are communal by nature, which means that such relationships are bound to form. Just make sure that you don't break established canon, and that you follow the specifications for what constitutes a Pack Ghost (Absolutes and Variants included) as per the subspecies.
Q: Are Pack Ghosts who are directly descended from my breeding pair automatically considered Absolutes?
A: No. Absolute Pack Ghosts must meet the Absolute Pack Ghost specifications listed here, even if they originated from another pack that has never heard of Idolon's pack.
Q: Can I submit someone else's Pack Ghost/Hatchery/etc. for him/her?
A: No. If you see someone selling Pack Ghosts or something, you may contact the other person about it, but please let that person decide what to do about his or her dragons/business. They can speak for themselves. The only exception to this is if you're acting as a translator because of a foreign language. (I'm an English-speaker and am not very fluent in any other language.)
Q: Should I ping you on this thread or are you subscribed to it?
A: I'm subscribed to it, but pings are probably okay. (We'll see after it happens what my preference is. XD So, this may change.) But really, a better way to contact me is probably through PM.
Q: Do both dragons in my breeding pair have to be descendants of Idolon and EchoPlasma for them to produce Absolutes?
A: Not at all! Only one parent has to be descended from them.
If you have any more questions, feel free to send me a PM!
