In the early days of Sornieth, when dragon kind was first opening their wings and seeing their new world, water ran into the center of the continent and created a vast sea. Life flocks to water, and soon dragons began to approach this sea to live within it, under the ruling of the Tidelord. With the Water God's patience, and the dragons natural sense to adapt, many became adept at hunting, fighting, and living within the Sea of a Thousand Currents. But none more so than the Ocean Lights.
These odd feathered snakes, energetic twisting ribbons, and butterfly like dragons had caught his eye, as did the swirling patterns on their scales, and the bright designs across their wings. He took some of them in, on a whim, hoping to make them his own, his children, in a way. So down he took them, to the Spiral Keep. Many went willingly from the surface, some had already been exalts. But he promised them something new, the development of small gills, webbed claws, and very stunning bio-luminescence.
They stayed in the depths for many months, passing on the traits to offspring, until the final product emerged. Dark, water colored dragons, with dull glowing areas on their bodies. At first they stayed deep under, and many still do, full clans of them, living and breeding in the depths of the sea, under the Tidelord's care. But some of the newer generations had begun to wonder what the surface is like, and therefore, surfaced.
Going out to join other clans, they always kept a close tie to the water. Needing it to breathe, and to eat, and live, they never live far from it. They are thankful that water is in, or around, every Flight territory in Sornieth, so they can travel as they please. Many have begun venturing out as ambassadors for the Water flight, to see the world. They are very comfortable in the Ice and Shadow flights especially, with Nature being a close third.
They always return to the Water or Ice flights to breed, areas made of water, surrounded by it. Their close ties to the Tidelord always remain, and is seen in offspring, always keeping their webbed feet, gills, and glowing blue swirls, just like the waves they were raised in.

Coatl, Spiral, and Fae Dragons all qualify to fit this subspecies. Imperials may be added later if enough support is put in for them.
Coatl swim very much like Penguins, using their large wings to push water away, maneuvering through the currents as if they are flying. They are elegant creatures, graceful in their movements, and easily able to catch the seafood they need to survive underwater. The bio-luminescent parts of their wings draw in fish, and also glow brightly upon fluffing up to warn away attackers.
Fae Dragons move much like a Jellyfish does, spreading their large wings out to collect water, then pushing them down to force they water away, propelling them forward. While they move slower this way, they do not rely on the depths to hunt, instead staying in shallow reef areas. Fae commonly wait for nightfall to hunt, floating to the top of the water and lighting up. They then drown the bugs that land on them at night, and they eat those. That, or water beetles are tasty snacks.
Spiral Dragons swim much like crocodiles and sea snakes. Using more of a slithering motion to move, and tails as rudders. Their sets of wings also help to move as paddles. Spirals mainly hunt for meat, spreading out their long bodies on the ocean floor and letting dust settle. They let off a soft glow that barely permeates the dust. When animals come to investigate, they are quickly wrapped up and devoured whole. Very skilled Spirals can also catch water birds, jetting from the waters much like flying fish.

Blowfish are a variant of the Ocean Light subspecies. Only their body lights up, their wings and stomach staying mostly dark. Instead of drawing prey to them with dim light, they rush prey head on.
These dragons have adapted to danger, and to catching bigger prey, by forming venomous spines on their bodies. These spines secrete venom when an enemy or piece of prey is snagged on them during an attack. Being immune to their own venom, they can consume prey that has died from it.
The blowfish variant is skilled in puffing themselves up to appear much bigger, by spreading wings and fluffing up feathers if they have any. The toxic glands on their wings can be seen moving as the venom starts to flow to their spines, triggered by the fight or flight response in a dragons brain. If this isn't enough to scare away an enemy, the dragon will likely attack.
