In life there is nothing if there are no opposites and no aids. As ice and fire are opposites, ice and wind are allies, relying on each other to balance out their strengths and weaknesses. Even in the darkest days of the war between the gods of Sornieth friendships and alliances have also been made. Though few can say definitively where the idea for Tundras came from, the fact has remained that the lumbering children of the Icewarden have a personality more fitting for the breezy plateau of the Windsinger. In the earliest days, the children of ice often found themselves venturing into the steeps of the Plateau when food was harder to find amid the snow-swept tundras. In time some were even drawn as far as the Twisting Crescendo, fascinated by the howling winds and curious to see if they could add an element to the storm.
Like most tundras, these ancestors truly forgot why they’d come to the planes, but their coats sparkling with the magic of ice and the glittering gems were a generational reminder as to where they came from. The sight of an Arctic Gale is considered a warning, for they travel in family units generally. A large number of them congregating in any one place is a sign that a blizzard or other strong storm is on it’s way from the South and that the others around them should be prepared. Though usually together, sometimes a single one can be found as a weather gage within a clan, watching the skies and telling the rest of the clan when to gather more food than normal to prepare for what might be coming.
Though the ancestors of this breed were strictly gembond, over time there has been some crossbreeding and a very small few in variations have Smoke as their tertiary instead of Gembond. More recently other variations have begun to find their way into the breed, with ripple and current genes sneaking in on a select few. More recently, a strange new pattern has begun appearing on Gales and Suns, swirling like the winds they command.

As the original species, the Arctic Gales are associated with a large amount of poor weather. The gathering of more than two in any location is certain to bring a large amount of storms. While the type of storm can vary, generally they bring windstorms or snow flurries from the deep arctic. Lairs with more than two often find themselves under unique weather patterns that seem to only affect the territory the clan owns and potentially neighbors who border them.
Arctic Gales love to burrow underground due to their instinctual nature and to escape the weather they bring. It’s not unusual for burrows to be large and cosy with several small family quarters and a large main area for the community to sit together during the worst of the weather outside. They enjoy helping other dragons, and occasionally can influence the weather to help with tasks like watering gardens or gathering leaves.
Solitary Arctic Gales will build a family unit from other available dragons. While they might be able to influence the weather a little, it is unlikely that they would be able to produce hurricanes or blizzards on their own.

Clothing
As tundras have naturally thick fur, many prefer to dress in silks or flourish jewelry to try and match the sky around them. Some will change their guise depending on the necessity of their secondary jobs or preferences.

Arctic Gales prefer to have familiars that can survive between both the Icy Tundra and the milder plateau weather. It doesn't really matter if the familiars can fly or not, only that they can survive the weather.
Items
Arctic Gales enjoy hoarding scroll cases and journals as they often need to record the weather formations they see. Other items they hoard are logs and pelts in order to build sturdy and insulated shelters if needed.
This variation is generally found in the Frigid Floes of the Icefields. Occasionally they can be found in other places like the Zephyr Steppes, but it is rare and unlikely. Floes enjoy being guides through the icefields and subsequently tend to have ice based magic.
Floes tend to live exclusively in a cave or tunnel setting, preferring the enclosed areas for their homes. Mountains of snow are typically used to disguise entrances and these lairs tend to have multiple exits on the off chance that one or more gets blocked by snow or ice.
Floes can be solidary though they prefer to have company. The form of company can change however. Floes have been known to lead travelers into their homes and assimilate them into their herds whether the traveler is willing or not. Occasional legends have spread due to these instances and often state that travelers are trapped until they complete certain tasks for the right to leave.
Frigid Gusts are almost exclusively found on the Southern edge of the Windswept Plateau or the Northern Edge of the Southern Icefields. This variation specializes in the colder winds of winter and are associated with blizzards and ice storms. They enjoy storytelling and ice sculptures.
Frigid Gusts enjoy a stiff breeze and will have a mixture of open lair space and tunnels. Main rooms tend to be large with open air sections and the family caverns more secluded.
Gusts tend to be more solitary in nature than the other variations, preferring to make their family units out of other species than their own company.

Generally Midnight Suns are found in the sections of the Southern Icefield where the Sun rarely sets in Summer. This variation doesn’t pack as much power as their Gale cousins, however they can be quite disruptive in large numbers. Suns enjoy weather watching, recording what the weather patterns are, which stars are visible and what their positions are.
This variation prefers to have open air lairs, or spots where they can watch the clouds without getting too wet from any sudden weather changes. Like their more magical cousins, they can influence small patches of weather but are more likely to create a small shower or pleasant breeze than a full on blizzard or hurricane.
Solitary Suns are almost non-existent. They are tight-knit bunch and usually travel in twos. On the rare chance that one is alone, they will look for other tundras or other variations of the Subspecies to create a family unit with. If none can be found, they’ll default to the largest dragon population in the lair.

Sentinels are perhaps the rarest variation of the Gales, only appearing before major disasters generally. This variation can be found in the highest reaches of the Cloudscrape Crags or the darkest parts of the bamboo forests common in the Reedcliff Ascent. They are occasionally found within the eye of the Twisting Crescendo, though no one knows how or why they're there or how they got out of the storm.
This variation rarely has what would traditionally be thought of a lair, preferring instead small lean-to and shacks made from tree branches they've stripped down. They're continually moving thus making a traditional cave or hole in the ground rare. Some Sentinels have been known to dig out shallow depressions for themselves where they'll weather even the worst storms without complaint or feelings. They're magic is stronger than the original gales, able to produce hurricanes or blizzards on their own.
Sentinels, unlike other variations, prefer solitude and at max will travel in packs of two or three. Hatchlings are revered as they're a rare commodity though they tend to split off from their parents after a year or so together.
