LORE

It is well-known that many coatls believe dull or white plumage to be a bad omen. Whilst this is linked with the fact that faded plumage can be a sign of illness, there is another, lesser known reason why this breed will often go so far as to exile members of its own who are unfortunate enough to be born with paler colours.

That reason is that some dull coatls are just pure evil.

Though they make up only a small proportion of dull coloured coatls, these dragons are feared and hated by those few that know what they are, and for good reason. Many are exiled by their clan or parents because of their dull colours, wandering Sornieth alone and bringing chaos with them wherever they go. Others manipulate their way into a permanent home and stay there indefinitely, leeching off the unfortunate dragons who were kind enough to take them in and slowly but surely worming their way into a position of power. Some endlessly roam the planet, constantly hunting for victims.

There are many ways a coatl can grow to become one of these monsters. Some are affected by dark magic before they are even born, others eggs may have come into contact with the Shade. Some are simply born this way, whether the condition was inherited through their family or due to a rare genetic anomaly.

Whatever the reason, these coatls appear normal at first other than their dull colours. As they grow older, their personalities undergo a dramatic change. Previously friendly, kind dragons become violent and sadistic. Diligent, hard-working dragons neglect their duties and become a manipulative parasite on those who care for them. Slowly but surely, these coatls are consumed by one or more of the seven deadly sins.

APPEARANCE

This subspecies are coatls of any flight whose primary, secondary and tertiary colours are all dull. "Dull" is kind of subjective I know, but use common sense I guess! Grey range, probably some of the brown range, thistle, swamp, forest, steel... those sort of colours. UPDATE: StormyDragon has compiled a list of accepted dull primary and secondary colours, which can be found on the google doc. Any genes are fine.

So, an example of this subspecies!

Her egg was accidentally hit with dark magic, and she was rejected by her mother, who claimed that she was cursed and a danger to her siblings. After failing to find a home, Persephone returned to the clan and begged the dark mage to apprentice her, so that one day she might be able to cure herself of her curse. @DarkAlliGator I approve and place my own dull bab here to join in. I need to start thinking of names for this subspecies but I love what you have so far. Could they take after the seven deadly sins and go out of control in various ways maybe? You already have wrath pictured up there. How would you feel about dull Coatls that go mad with Greed, Envy, Gluttony, Sloth(?), Lust and Pride along with Wrath? Edit: Could each flight be designated a sin/sins? @StruckLucky Oh he's adorable! (For now, that is! >:D) That could be quite an interesting idea, but I can see some of the sins being harder to work with...

Like, you could have the stereotypical Smaug-like dragon hoarding treasure and paranoid that people are trying to steal it for greed (or maybe gluttony? what's the difference between those two anyway?) but what would a crazy sloth coatl do? Maybe something like capture other dragons as slaves to do things for them? I do love that idea though! And perhaps we could have the name relate to the seven deadly sins if that's what we're going for!

I was actually thinking about the flight idea just before I saw your edit! But there are 11(?) flights and only 7 sins, so some would need to share! Or perhaps we could do it more with the colours of the dragons? Like if they have x colour on them this represents x sin, or if they have x colour and y colour it's a mixture of x and y sins? Or the genes or something...

@DarkAlliGator

We can work those out. For gluttony/greed I thought they'd outright go after other dragons for their treasure/food like, if it's showing and out in the open they're going to steal/hoard or eat it right then and there. The other dragon doesn't want to give it to them? ******* fight me bro. >(
If it's hidden you bet they're going to ferret it out, in my headcanon clans can be bankrupt/emptied out by them. Coatls affected by Gluttony are endlessly hungry and cannot be full no matter how much they eat. Coatls affected by Greed never have enough gold/jewels and are often paranoid in the bargain. Maybe they have terrible long term memories and constantly forget where they stashed their hoard?

For Sloth they wouldn't do anything remotely take action as capturing slaves, Sloth is apathy and inactivity. Sloth dragons should be parasites, they literally attach themselves to another dragon and live off them like a growth. I can see that as a negative for that variety of Coatl.

Coatl's affected by Lust I could see capturing other dragons to do the deed with, they'll need a lot of participants.

As for the sin attached to colors/genes that seems like far too much of a hassle, I say stick to eyes. That being said, if this subspecies only has a few colors allowed for the Coatls then it can be reasonable. C=

Gluttony is a specific kind of greed, applying to the desire for food. Greed is a more general word that means an obsessive desire for something material, the two go hand in hand though so if a flight needs more than one sin, those two pair well.

@DarkAlliGator I have a couple of dull coatls that I've loved since I got them! I love dull coatls actually, I think they wear greys very well. I think these 2 look like birds caught in an oil spill, which can be used for lore I suppose? Coatls are quite birdlike because of their feathers, and I imagine that coatls who live and work in the fire and lightning lands (the most industrial areas) can sometimes get covered in gunk. The gunk weighs their feathers down and they lose their bright coloring. And so I like to imagine my 2 coatls here become something like the Mysterious Creatures of the Swamp. (they also just hatched a nest recently, they're on the back page of my lair)

@StruckLucky That sounds good to me for greed. I can imagine gluttony dragons just constantly having to kill to sate their hunger, I know coatls only eat seafood but perhaps for these ones seafood isn't enough, they'll eat anything and everything that looks edible. Including plump hatchlings that are left unattended.

Sloth also sounds good! I was kinda grasping at straws with my idea but yours seems to work quite nicely. They could also become angry/violent if others refuse to do things for them... but then that maybe sounds like a bit too much work for a slothful dragon. Hmmm. I do feel it needs something more though... perhaps they're just very, very manipulative?

Lust, damn that's dark but it makes sense.

And yeah, on further thought flight is the best way to do it; I was thinking perhaps give each flight 2 or 3 sins associated with it, ideally showing the worst side of that flight, and the dragon can be any one or a mix of those sins for their flight if that makes sense? That way there can be overlap, but it'll be more spread out if that makes sense. So for Plague, wrath and gluttony immediately spring to mind. Probably wrath for fire as well. Ice is the collectors flight, right? It'd make sense for them to have Greed. I can't really think of any more right now, any ideas? Or we could just not link the sins to flight at all, and just have the owner of the coatl decide. I dunno :)

@Cheeseburger Ahh they're awesome! They do look like they've been dunked in oil, poor things! And those are some adorable babies!

@DarkAlliGator

I can see that, the Gluttony Coatls that are shade touched or whammied with dark magic would need more than seafood after awhile because it's a slow way of getting their fill. So they start out with a seafood addiction when they're hatchlings right, it builds and it builds until their play biting of siblings becomes outright ripping off flesh because they're still hungry and mom said (s)he had enough for the day, but (s)he clearly hasn't had his/her fill. I say leave plants out of the equation because they're not made to be herbivores but bugs, seafood, meat and each other are up for grabs. I'm liking this a lot!

I'm liking manipulation as a trait for Sloth Coatls, they can get others to be angry and violent for them, no need to dirty their own talons. Should we add a slight degree of mind control for Sloth, they can make certain suggestions to other dragons, possibly plant an idea in their minds that makes it look like their own? Nothing too powerful mind you, but say our Sloth Coatl doesn't like another dragon, he/she could plant the 'I hate this guy/gal' thought into their chosen's mind and eventually get them to fight even if the chosen dragon originally is a huge sweetie? Does that make sense? This could also be how they get a dragon to willingly be their host.

Yeah and also really terrible....lets not talk too much about Lust, they are going to be bad, bad dragons. Moving on.

Sounds good, give the user with the dull Coatl a choice of what traits they will want instead of just lumping them with one, good idea.

I unfortunately don't have any idea of what traits the flights might have, so I'm useless there. D=

I say owner decides so we have less decision making. Also, it'll give the user some leeway to decide what they think are good traits for their flight instead of 'this is the eye color so you should fit this mold' kind of thing. The Coatl owner should get two out of seven sins to apply to their babs. They will have three total, one will already be given to them, Wrath, that shall stay a permanent feature. Sound good?

Sound good?

@DarkAlliGator & @StruckLucky - First off, I would like to say that this subspecies is very very dark. Second off I would like to say that my Coatls are sad now (especially Takia who's a tad dull, and Laila who has a white primary.) Third off I would like to remind the world that not all dull Coatls are part of this subspecies, they may be the reason Coats are suspicious of dull hatchlings, but some hatchlings simply have dull colors, and are otherwise fine - for example Stogwen is a tad dull, but has a massive breeding project, and no psychotic tendencies (Takia hails from this by the way.) Fourthly, I would like to say that Lust is also viewed as somewhat desireable in a disturbing way - so they should have sought after genes like Crystal, Facet, and Gembond.

Ugh, I had a huge long reply typed out for both of you but when I finished typing it up and clicked submit, it was rollover! So I lost it ;_;

@StruckLucky That sounds great to me, so I guess that's gluttony sorted! Although I would leave plants in personally, just don't really make a big deal about it. The whole point is they're so hunger crazed they really don't care what they're eating and while they may not prefer plants, if there's nothing else I reckon they'd still go for them.

I think if there's any mind control for sloth dragons, it should be on an individual basis rather than a trait of the whole lot of them, if that makes sense. Personally, I think it'd be even more chilling and creepy for a coatl to be able to manipulate another dragon into hurting others without the use of magic, but coatls are magic users so I don't want to put my foot down and say "NO MIND CONTROL." As you say later in your comment, I'd like to leave each interpretation as open as possible so people can come up with their own ideas and stories rather than them all being the same :)

A different idea for Lust which might be a bit... nicer to work with... could be black widows. They, like the Sloth dragons, are very manipulative, only they're much more subtle about it. They appear normal, even charming, and make friends etc easily but their main goal is to mate with another dragon then kill them and kill/abandon the offspring and move onto another.

And yeah... I'm kind of having second thoughts about whether we should link the sins with the flights at all. I'm thinking it might be better if we just leave it completely open for the user to decide what they want their dragon to be like. I mean it would be cool to look at the worst traits of each flight and have them as the sins, but at the same time I don't want to "trap" anybody with a list of sins where they feel none of them are right for their dragon if that makes sense.

@StormyDragon I know, it started off dark and is gradually getting even darker haha! Sorry for making your coatls sad though (they're beautiful, by the way)!

And yeah I definitely agree, if and when I write up any official lore I'm gonna make sure that's made clear; don't exile your dull hatchlings, they're probably not psychos, they just might be.

The lust idea is interesting, I agree that they'd be the very pretty dragons! I think we're moving away from using genes to determine which affliction they have but yes, definitely beautiful but deadly.
