Introduction
The Ambush Hunters

The forest barely whispers as two shadows flash through its depths. Silent and invisible, two dragons dart through the flickering lack of light, one a vaguely Nocturne shape high in the trees, the other a sleek Mirror hidden by the dark waters of a nearby lake. Their movements are parallel as they race on air and in water, barely disturbing both as they moved.

The trampling of the beast behind them shatters this rapid symmetry. A Wartoad’s roaring cry pierces the air as it spots the Nocturne gliding through the trees, weaving between clustered branches with startling agility. The Wartoad lunges, but comes up with branches clamped in its jaw as the Nocturne snatches a narrow escape. The dragon never startles, never flinches, as it hurtles through the air at breakneck speed. Its calm eyes meets the hidden form of the Mirror in the water, and an odd hiss echoes through the air from its throat, follow by a series of sharp, lyrical clicks.

The Wartoad lunges again, but the Nocturne spins, diving out of the way as the Wartoad trips over the ground, heading straight for the body of water just beyond the trees. Seconds before it hits the water, the Mirror lunges. Great jaws clamp around the hard, leathery skin, and then the Mirror is retreating, dragging the Wartoad back into the depths. The beast struggles, and the Nocturne streaks down from the sky to deliver a final blow.

A loud splash is all that remains of the monster as it goes limp.

dragon-5.png The Croco Draconem is considered to be both a wonder and an abomination.
Croco means crocodile and Draconem means Dragon.
Crocodile Dragons are the result of crocodiles and dragons mixing their species to produce unique offspring through dark elemental magic. They are a rare subspecies of dragons that only originate from earth, plague, water, wind or nature-based elemental magic.

While mystifying many inhabitants across Sornieth with their rare appearances in the wild, they are also responsible for instilling fear in those who travel deep into the woods or those who set out to explore the open waters. These monsters are experts in camouflage and use the element of surprise to nab their prey, sometimes other dragons.

The very thought of being attacked by a feral dragon pouncing on you from somewhere in the trees or from below invisible watery depths is enough to spread dread when wandering close to Croco Draconem settlements.

They are swift hunters and the only way to bargain for one's life when faced with a hungry Croco Draconem, is to throw someone or something else edible at it.

However, it has been reported that certain colonies of Croco Draconem consisting of both mirrors and nocturnes tend to populate an entire region where land, water, caves, and trees are present with variations.

In short, they colonize or 'infest' and rule a portion of land and water together in a specific region.

When water-based Croco Draconem shifts their habitats to a tree nest for any reason their diet will primarily switch to meat and the same goes for the tree nesters who switch to a water-based habitat.

This makes them highly adaptable to different environments.

Note: A primarily air-based Croco Draconem is capable of hunting in the water and vice versa.

Social Traits

source.gif

Croco Draconem is a subspecies that is hard to converse with as they instinctively communicate only with their own subspecies. They make a range of snapping, hissing and growling noises and grunt syllables that only the same species can pick up on.

They are built to form large communities and they kill together in hoards but are well capable of hunting on their own.

Joining New Clans

source.gif

When placed in a clan full of other breeds of dragons,
they are generally reclusive and tend to be overly
aggressive.

A Croco Draconem is mostly subdued only by
allowing it to have a mate of the same subspecies.
However, they do work with other clans over time,
if their respect can be won over.

This takes a paramount amount of time to do so.

But clans still adopt them and train them, as their
hunting, tracking, and magic abilities are worth the trouble.

Those considering adopting a hatchling should also consider the amount of work that goes into caring for them. On top of that, much like adult Croco Draconem, hatchlings bite.

The Croco Draconem are preservers of natural elemental magic. They are powerful storehouses for magic and life force energy that is derived from wind, plague, earth, water or nature elements. (This includes other living organisms.)

The waters they swim in increase their magic storehouse for water-based abilities, likewise, this goes for wind, plague, earth, and nature-based abilities.

They have to interact with a specific environment to gain their ability.

Therefore, they have to interact with a specific environment at birth to gain their primary ability. This is the passive ability and it is different in each Croco Draconem based on a flight's lair or specific location that they interacted with at birth.
(i.e, dragons born in a wind flight lair will have its passive ability to store wild elemental magic within itself. Gen Ones born in a water location on the World Map will be born with passive water abilities.)

The magical abilities developed from thereon are purely circumstantial but only limited to their abilities to extract magic from water, wind, plague, nature and the earth elementals.

How their magic abilities help other clans

This differs from one clan to the next. Croco Draconem are magic storehouses. They absorb magical energy from certain environments that they interact with and they also absorb energy from the food they eat.

This magical energy is transferable and relies upon the Croco Draconem's will to do so. When a Croco Draconem joins a clan it may eventually allow the clan to use it's magic abilities to their benefit. But how the clan uses it will vary from one clan to the other.

For instance, a clan may adopt a Croco Draconem with passive 'water' magic to replenish their dried out lakes or to enrich the life within their lakes and rivers. The same water magic from the Croco Draconem can be used to hunt within the waters by other dragons. Either damage, agility, camouflage or all three and more can be activated. This depends on the Croco Draconem's level and experience. At higher levels, Croco Draconem unleash myriad varities of magic.

Now the same water Croco Draconem from the examples above can also help provide other elemental magic supply. For instance, the water Croco Draconem may be moved to a tree habitat. Here it will develop either wind or nature abilities. This depends on the clan and the interaction levels with the elements.

Clans use Croco Draconem in different ways. However, their magic abilities aren't 'godlike' and they shouldn't be pushed to their limits to avoid exertion and magic drain. Rapid magic drain will render a Croco Draconem useless in the long run. They need time to replenish and they need to keep interacting with different elements to maintain their supplies. Though their abilities aren't godlike, the magical possibilities are endless.

Note: Croco Draconem can absorb negative energy as well such as diseases like the plague. Hence, their interaction with plague elements will increase their body's storage capacity and absorption of plague based elements. This could lead to physical mutations under certain rare circumstances.

Energy Usage

A Croco Draconem can only use a certain amount of energy per day and this is based on its level. It can provide a magic charge to elements and dragons for a certain period of time, after which the energy amount is depleted. The Croco Draconem is usually exhausted at the end of this and should be given ample time to rest.

Lvl (1 - 5) 10 % Usage per day (approximately half hour magic charge)
Lvl (6 - 10) 25 % Usage per day (approximately 2 hour magic charge)
Lvl (11- 15) 50 % Usage per day (approximately 5 hour magic charge)
Lvl (16 - 20) 75 % Usage per day (approximately 10 hour magic charge)
Lvl (21 - 25) 100% Usage per day (approximately 15 hour magic charge)

Croco Draconem need a 24-hour cycle to replenish their magic stores before they can provide any more magic charges.

In the coliseum

Croco Draconem will only possess normal abilities like other dragons when fighting in the coliseum. This stems from the ethical grounds that their magic abilities cannot be used against beast clans who do not have Croco Draconem or any other excess magic storehouses of their own in battle.

However, their abilities towards the same subjects may change outside of the coliseum considering circumstances may be very different. Other parties may also possess magic storehouses or other beings capable of facing off problems much bigger than Croco Draconem. In such cases, they are bound to fight back and provide their clan members with magic charges.

Origin Stories

From up above or down below,
Crawls prowling ghoul.
No sound. No hiss.
Only the quick kiss
Of Death.

(Scroll V: Ancient Poetic Texts of Sornieth)

Expert researchers from clans across Sornieth believe the Croco Draconem to have existed among the very first organisms that inhabited the lands and waters, alongside dragons. They have evolved more than slightly since, with the emergence of their nocturne counterparts and the distinctions between modern-day Croco Draconem and the unknown ancients they evolved from.

Ancient Croco Draconem were not anatomical replicas of the modern-day mirror, considering their webbed feet and noticeably longer snouts. Much is yet to be known of the ancients they descended from, as evidence is scarce, rendering research invalid.

This has been the conclusion met by many experts. But dragon researchers across Sornieth still struggle to find clues and learn more about this rare subspecies, through the careful examination of fossil remnants and the critical observation of inscriptions and illustrations that were created centuries ago.

Folklore

According to a legendary myth told still by most tribes and kingdoms of Sornieth, a group of one of the ancient dragons, once lived in harmony beside a bask of crocodiles. They did not consume them as food. And funnily, these meat-eating dragons would often leave scraps in the land or water for the crocodiles - obvious puppeteering by nature.

Soon, the crocodiles were trusting of the dragons. There was no commotion when dragons decided to invade the water bodies in the region. Crocodiles and dragons swam side by side.

One of the high priests of that particular ancient dragon clan spoke of how the crocodiles were divine beings in realms not understood by dragons, that they were symbolic of freedom, strength and unmatched power.

According to him, there was untapped potential waiting to implode. He dreamed night and day of a time when his clan could unleash the primal power of a crocodile within themselves; That dawn when across the skies and seas, would seamlessly glide silhouettes of ace predators, ambush hunters and fearless warriors - The Croco Draconem.

Frequently Asked Questions
I’ve spotted a crocodile like dragon. How do I know for sure it’s a Croco Draconem?

First, look for distinct markings - pinstripe or python genes in green shades and green to brown shades of noxtide or morph. A quick way to identify them is to look for clawed webbed toes.

Croco Draconem have relatively long snouts. Variations are present in the snout structure between the mirrors and nocturnes. They have massive long tails with thick plating.

What are the food habits of the Croco Draconem?

Water-Based Croco Draconem will consume Meat and Seafood. Tree and cave nesters will consume Meat and Insects. Since both variations consume meat, they can hunt and survive in water or land environments regardless of their primary habitat.

What are the hunting habits of the Croco Draconem?

Both mirror and nocturne based Croco Draconem have sensitive pressure receptors in the pits of the scales located around their mouths. This helps detect motion when trying to capture prey in dark and murky waters or in dense thickets of brush and leaves.

When the prey is too large to kill easily, they will grip certain portions in their jaws tightly and rapidly rotate their bodies to tear apart their prey.

Air-based Croco Draconem also follows this pattern seamlessly. Smaller prey is usually carried off by aerial Croco Draconem to their caves and nests where hungry young ones may be waiting in anticipation.

Can a Croco Draconem breed with any other type of dragon?

Croco Draconem can breed with any dragon but it is extremely hard to get them to do so. They are very particular about their breeding preferences.
However, when stranded in a clan with no other Croco Draconem, the lonely male or female will eventually succumb to the pressure of the reproductive cycle and mate with another dragon.

What kind of offspring would a Croco Draconem and another type of dragon have?

Offspring from a Croco Draconem and a normal dragon is a hybrid of an original modern species and the ancient old Croco Draconem that has evolved through the centuries. These hybrids can take on some qualities from the Croco Draconem. In fact, claims have been made that they are just as primitive or powerful as the purebred Croco Draconem.

However, these are only claims and much is yet to be researched about hybrids.
(Those with details on hybrid offspring are requested to submit their observations via PM to @DrakeDynasty)

Do clusters of Croco Draconem form groups with other small or large clusters?

Yes and No. It depends on many external factors such as environment, breeding conditions, etc. This behavior is still under observation. As of now, it is safe to say that one cluster will join another cluster of Croco Draconem more often than not if conditions benefit both clusters.

Do Croco Draconem wear apparel?

The feral Croco Draconem will tear apparel apart. The tamed Croco Draconem that is able to communicate and function within a clan will accept the notion of wearing apparel.

Do Croco Draconem eat their familiars?

Feral Croco Draconem are known to eat familiars that are not meat eaters themselves. Giving your Croco Draconem a familiar that is soft natured is a death sentence. It's better to give them a familiar that can defend itself until the Croco Draconem is used to it as a companion. After this point, they do not get aggravated by the familiar.

Will a Croco Draconem fit into my clan?

A Croco Draconem will not fit into any clan at first. This is quite natural.
They can even be a danger to younger or mild natured dragons of the clan.
They are cool blooded beasts, ravenous killers by birth.

But clans choose to adopt Croco Draconem for other benefits - Exceptional hunting skills, battling skills and the most obvious reason, of course, is to utilise their magical store houses. Clans that are well to do often need Croco Draconem to keep maximizing their natural or elemental resources and magical wealth.

Apart from all of this, owning a Croco Draconem is a much sought after status symbol. Clans are often proud to have Croco Draconem living and hunting beside them. Croco Draconem are prized warriors, miraculous magic workers and efficient hunters that can benefit the clan that is patient enough to tame and train them.

Note: Clans are advised to immediately find a mate of the same subspecies when adopting a croco draconem. This will help avoid a lot of injuries and drama as they become more comfortable when another gender of the same subspecies is in visible proximity.

How to take care of a Croco Draconem?

First, make sure you have the space to host a Croco Draconem. They need an enclosure with water, trees, caves or a mix of the three environments to live a stable and healthy life. Singling out a portion of land owned by the clan or using guarded forest space would be two easy options. But clans can plan and design enclosure setups in many different ways.

Second, get them a mate. Ensure they are both separated for at least a week but in visible proximity. Then, take an entire day off to release one of them into the larger habitat with the other Croco Draconem. Giving the male a small enclosure and the female a larger enclosure as this somehow seems to impact their comfort levels.

Make sure the clan’s strongest dragons oversee this task. When both Croco Draconem seem to have settled in with each other, leave them be for a few days.

This gives them time to learn more about their new environment and it helps them develop a routine.

Once they are seemingly following a routine everyday, start to introduce trainers who visit them every day. They have to be fed on a daily basis by the trainers.

Trainers are requested to be cautious at all times until they are sure that the Croco Draconem have started picking up on their language. Once a clan is able to communicate with a Croco Draconem, they can start making small requests.

Clans can start out by asking the Croco Draconem to give them their spoils from a particular hunt. After a few days, clans can request the Croco Draconem to hunt or battle beside them.

The enclosure can be widened at this point or nullified entirely in case it is a magic barrier.

As long as the Croco Draconem have been fed in this area for a few days, they will remain. They prefer to stay in familiarized areas where they know there are few surprises. They will return to the same region even after a hunt.

Please understand that this process does not work for every Croco Draconem.
Some may be stubborn enough to escape and abandon the clan when they decide they’ve had enough.

If a clan is unable to find a mate for their Croco Draconem, it will take months before they settle in and start to follow a proper hunting routine.

Changing a Croco Draconem’s mind is very difficult but it can be done.

Note: When being introduced to a new clan’s region, males feel more comfortable in smaller enclosures and females feel comfortable in larger ones.
