You get: a drabble about an item of high significance
It started with the hammer.
It sang to him, earthen and slow, from the first day he curled his chubby hatchling paw around the handle, solemn-eyed even then as his father (looming, sad-eyed) looked on. It was a relic, his father had promised, saved from the old days, carved from the bones of a long-dead deity. It shall not fall from it’s wielder’s hand in battle, nor shall it be taken by force; it can only answer to one master at a time.
It stays by his side.
Although he drapes himself in ruined cloth, coarse and fraying, he always takes care to hang it prominently by his side, that all might mark it. So what, if it looks unassuming? Such would be the observation of a fool. It… demands this, the hammer. It is a thing of doom and duty, such as he.
It stays by his side.
He sleeps restlessly, curled more tightly around it than any of his other numerous possessions. It murmurs to him, winding threads and roots through his dreams. Every time he fells a foe in battle, it howls to him, sweet as a lullaby, and his sour voice howls back, mindless on his own power.
It stays by his side.
