But do you really need all of this stuff? An old new year's lantern? The entire Britannica Encyclopedia? An actual kitchen sink? I'm throwing it out." Thaisa sighed, "Fine." Othello suddenly turns flits to the other two dragons with a golden box in his claws, "Hey, check this out! Thaisa, where did you get this?" "I don't remember..." She muttered. The three dragons crowded around the box. It was intricately carved, detailing the creation of the eleven gods with a focus on the Lightweaver. Details of light sprites, Imperials, and Pearlcatchers line the borders of the box. It shines tantalizingly in the sun. "I wonder what's inside," Othello says softly. The box was warming to his touch. "Lemme open it! It was in my hoard!" Thaisa shouts. She wrestles Othello's hand away and pried the box open. A sickening scream pierces through the blue sky. Timon quickly knocked the other two dragons over, raising a wing to shield his friends, while casting a quick wind shield. A mass of dark creatures emerges from the box. All manners of shadows shriek and screech at the three dragons huddled together. Crawling shadows, creeping shadows, slithering and sliding shadows, claws and scratches. Timon grunts, trying to keep the wind wall up. The monsters disperse, infecting Sornieth with their evil. He quickly looks outside the window. A black mass erupts into the sky and begins dispersing. One smashes through the window. Before Yorick could make a sound, the shadow has passed. He was filled with a deep sense of dread, like he has never felt before. It ate at the dragon’s core. Quickly, he turns and rushes over to Adrian. “Y-you ok?” Adrian shook his head. Tears filled his eyes. His lips were quivering as he pointed at something behind Yorick. With apprehension Yorick turned and gasped. Adrian’s bassoon lay smashed in pieces. His sheet music was ripped to shreds, his music stand warped beyond recognition. Behind him, Yorick could feel the other dragon begin to shake and sob. This was Adrian’s whole life. He dedicated his every fiber into the pursuit of his craft, and everything’s been destroyed. Adrian was openly bawling now, curling up on himself and hiding his head between his wings. Yorick could feel himself getting angry. Who would do this? Why? He moved to comfort his friend. “Hey, its…” It wasn’t okay. Yorick couldn’t lie to Adrian. “I’m here for you,” It wasn’t much, but it was the best he could do. Thaisa sniffles, “I’m scared.” Othello places a paw on Timon’s shoulder, “What do you think will happen now?” “I’m not sure,” Timon says softly, “I don’t even know what that was we just unleashed onto the world.” The soft footsteps of a skydancer forces the group out of their dazed stupor. What are you doing here?” Timon asks. “Making sure you don’t forget to take out the most important thing in that box,” She says softly. The skydancer treads over to the box. Delicately, she turns it over. Something resembling a light sprite, but not quite peeks out and smiles at her. It twirls into the air, releasing a shimmering pattering of light into the area, before flitting off into the distance. The smell of freshly baked cookies lingers in the air. A calm fills the hollowed out room. Cassandra breaks the silence with a soft, reverent whisper. “Hope, the last thing to leave the box, chases after the evils that have been unleashed, reminding dragonkind to keep persevering in the face of adversity.”

Dragon:

Who is this dragon?:

Creamsicle is a catlike Coatl hailing from the Southern Icefield. A native from the Snowsquall Tundra, he's seen his fair share of cold weather. Yet, he still remains childish and optimistic. The curious dragon came to our clan because of his need to travel to someplace warmer, bringing his joy and joking nature with him.

Why did they open the box?:

If Creamsicle would've known of the dark forces lurking inside, he never would've done such a thing to begin with. Unfortunately, while venturing into the Sunbeam Ruins (most likely to sunbathe, as he frequently did), he managed to step on ground that wasn't quite stable, slipping far down into the earth. He stumbled upon an ancient, dilapidated tunnel, leading farther and farther down an unknown path. As the Coatl ventured on, he begin to hear whispering, before coming to a circular room at the main end, scarcely lit by gently glowing gems that were piled around the room. Creamsicle saw a delightfully decorated box - and my, was it beautiful. His hands grabbed it greedily, as if somehow he needed it, before he began to search for a way out. He was feeling a bit odd - why did he feel the need to grab the box? He guessed he was just interested in it, and that was that. He hadn't noticed that upon reaching the room the whispers had ceased, but he noticed when they began again as he desperately tried to find a way out. They came from the box, speaking words he couldn't understand. Occasionally, he would hear, "Free us," but the words were garbled and difficult to comprehend, so he believed he was hearing things. He managed to find the pale light slipping out of where he entered, his damaged wings folded against his back, and clawed his way back to the surface that had somehow swallowed him up.

When he arrived into the light, he found himself in the Mirrorlight Promenade, and the whispers turned into screams. Harsh, loud, violent screams, ringing in the poor Coatl's ears in a deafening fashion. He couldn't ignore it for very long, his head pounding, before he desperately clawed at the box, fumbling to open the lid, and only barely managing to do so without completely unhinging it.

What happened after they opened it?:

Dark spirits spilled from the box, blackening the sky if only for a moment, swirling around as twisted laughter filled the air. Creamsicle was shocked, his eyes wide and shame filling him, terrified of what he'd done. Dust filled the air and he looked down into the box, still bewildered, to find a mask. It was a simple one, made entirely of metal, with sharp feather-like shapes jutting from the back, converging as they traveled downward over the face. Something dark lurked within it, too, calling him by his name, asking the Coatl to don it, to bring misfortune onto others. Creamsicle wanted to refuse, but his hands moved without him asking, and soon he wore the haunting crown upon his head. His eyes radiated an amber glow, and ghostly hands outstretched from his back, ghastly and pale, as Creamsicle lost himself, taken by the dark spirits that now roamed Sornieth.

How did their clan react?:

His clan was shaken by the sudden arrival of the dark spirits that now plagued the land. The shadow portion of Eclipsim was mortified, seeing them as nearly shade-like, and looked back through their ancient tomes. The light portion became wrought with fright and began seeking ways to banish the entities back to whence the came, not understanding their origin, but certain to investigate it. Creamsicle was noticeably missing for weeks after, with his clan fearing the worst. They could not imagine that he was held as a vessel for the ancient horror from within Pandora's Box instead. The dark spirits that now reigned over Sornieth had seemingly crowned him as their king, he having donned the crown, and his clan was never any wiser about the fact... at least, for a while.

When their efforts and research began to make progress, they discovered his orange bandana at the scene that they found most probable to be the location the spirits were released from. They instantly knew who had done it, though they did not know why, or where he was then, but Eclipsim knew that something strange was afoot, and the clan has been searching for him since. They know that without finding him, there will be no answers, and there will be no way to stop this horrendous reign of terror.

Extra notes:

this was super fun to write! creamsicle is based off of a cat i used to know, so it was natural that i involved him in something like this! it brought heavily to mind the "curiosity killed the cat, satisfaction brought it back" scenario (hopefully the satisfaction was not in opening the box)... this will probably be in his lore at some point once the clan finds him and helps dispell the entities that have possessed him, and he can go back to living a normal life of being a funny icecream enthusiast.

He’s courageous, chivalrous, loyal, and oblivious among many other things. He believes in equality and is willing to help out anyone as best as he can, even if that means putting his own life and future of the kingdom at stake. Why/How did they open the pandoras box? It was Morgana, his half sister though he didn’t know this yet, he merely thought she was a ward that had been brought to learn the ways of Camelot. Morgana raced into his room, her pearl not in her hands or circled by her tail like it usually was, tears pouring from her eyes. “Arthur please, I need your help! Uther he-“ She bellowed before being cut off by her own sob. Arthur blinked a couple times from being caught off guard but then did his best to calm her down. “Take some breaths Morgana, tell me what happened. What did father do?” The bright Imperial inquired. “My pearl...it’s gone! There’s a note but Uther won’t listen to me. He said that he’d just find a new one...Do you know important those are to us Pearlcatchers?” Each pause was a small sniffle as she tried to stop the tears flowing down her face. No, Arthur didn’t know the gravity of the situation and how losing a pearl affected another breed, but he’d do whatever he could to get it back for her. “Let me see the note.” Arthur reaches out his paw and immediately a parchment was in his hand. I assume by the time you’re reading this letter you’ve realized your ward’s orb has gone missing. Now I could ask money or a higher rank, but what good will that do? No, I want to meet with you...face to face. I’ll meet you at the place you oh so casually desecrated and destroyed, the Isle Of The Blessed in a week. If not, we’ll take not only the pearl but the Pearlcatcher as well. xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxXXXXXXXXXXxxx - A concerned citizen
[nextcol]xxxxxxXXXXXXXXxxx[/columns] Arthur wasted no time in getting to Where Merlin stayed, it was in the court physician’s chamber which is Gaius. Merlin was an apprentice to the old dragon, when he wasn’t supposedly in the tavern. (Gaius would always cover for the young wildclaw when he was out saving others as well and that was his go to.) “Where’s Merlin?” The Imperial said as he barged into the room full of alchemy and medicinal supplies. Before the old Bogsneak could reply Merlin appeared from his room, Arthur sighed in relief that he was actually here and he wouldn’t have to go on another wild goose chase. After explaining the situation Merlin was reluctant to go before he heard where the duo was heading. Merlin had been there before and neither time was a pleasant one. “The last time you went there you nearly got you head chopped off because you lost a fight and some dragon wanted to see if you were willing to sacrifice yourself for honor...” The Wildclaw asked as if not going was the most obvious choice. “I wouldn’t expect you to understand... truth be told neither do I but she seems distraught over losing that thing so we need to get it back.” Arthur shook his head as Merlin helped him with his armor. He knew nothing would change the stubborn Imperial’s mind and that he’d just have to tagalong to make sure he didn’t get into trouble. The journey was a couple days with not many issues other than the occasional bandit that Arthur fought off (with the use of Merlin’s magic but he couldn’t know about that just yet). Once they made it there, it seemed just as frightening as it was before, as of any other abandoned castle. It was once a glorious palace, gleaming with light and luxury until Uther attacked, The Great Purge was Uther’s war on magic. The older Imperial banned it in all of Albion and chose to purge the land himself, though many dragons, like Merlin, still study and practice it under his nose. The Isle Of The Blessed was said to be the heart of magic but now looked like any other ruin in Sornieth. The feeling always put the warlock on edge. It wasn’t long until they found the chest, beautifully gilded with gold that had swirling patterns and gleaming rubies. It seemed way out of place and Merlin couldn’t help but feel as if this was a trap. Arthur, being the most curious dragon the wildclaw had ever known, walked towards it after looking around for this other dragon. Slowly he made his way to the pedestal that held the chest. “Are you sure that’s a good idea? It seems obviously set out for someone to take and something that valuable for free is obviously-“ Merlin was cut off with a wave of a paw. The young Imperial was far too curious to turn back now. When his paws grabbed it and.... it wouldn’t budge. His brows furrowed before he tried more aggressively...and then even more aggressively. His claws dug into the material, causing claw marks before it finally swung open violently, pushing the Imperial back forcibly with a loud thud. What happened after they opened it? Arthur’s eyes widened as he looked up in shock. The chest was now floating as spirits flooded out of it like rushing water through a recently broken fenfisher flattail dam. Merlin had the same expression, the powerful magic filled the air as the spirits rushed to separate locations. It was dark magic and one of the most powerful of any Merlin had ever experienced, which meant this was the most for Arthur. Once it was over, the chest fell back down onto the pedestal, a note slowly floating to the ground. [columns]xxXXxXXXXXxxx[nextcol]
Well well well, it seems you’ve opened a powerful box, young Pendragon. I would’ve been happier if Uther made the trip himself but you’ll do just fine. I never took the orb from the girl nor did I want to speak with your father. I merely wanted him, the dragon who banned magic, use magic to destroy all of Sornieth, but his son will make for an even better idea. Your father’s reign will cease and you will never take the throne, which means magic will once again reign in Camelot. Thank you, Arthur Pendragon.
[nextcol]xxxxxxXXXXXXXXxxx[/columns] How did their clan react? The duo raced back to Camelot, Merlin grasping the chest with caution. It’ll take everyone to defeat all of these creatures before what the stranger who planted this wanted comes true. Once back in the castle, Arthur and Merlin raced into the throne room where Uther would be. The doors slammed open as the two dragons planted heavily. “Father, we have trouble.” Uther wasn’t angry, but he wasn’t exactly thrilled about it either, disappointed if anything that his son would fall for such mysteries. Arthur would have to train up more soldiers and Merlin would secretly search for ways to put the evil spirits back where they came from. Uther would contact all of the lairs that he had allegiances and treaties with and get them involved in attacking.
