abc9K6R.png Pandora's box has been opened and chaos rules the Sunbeam Ruins; In this chaos, a disturbance rippled through the Hewn City, shaking its ancient buildings and unearthing many things lost to the past; One of these things was a workshop.

Ecstatic archeologists flooded into the now revealed building, and soon made an incredible discovery; Not only was this workshop from one of the earliest eras of Sornieth, they soon realized this workshop was one established by an ancient imperial devotee of Lightweaver, Athena. Renowned for her wisdom and patronage of craftsmanship, Athena and her acolytes had left workshops like this all over the Sunbeam Ruins. Elusive and rare, the discovery of one is an exciting moment.

What's more, the workshop looks to have been abandoned in a rush, and scattered around the room are half-finished or even unstarted inventions, their components thrown to the wind.

This is where you come in. Left only with remnants of the past to go off of, can you discover the true purpose of these objects?

But the hubbub of the camp set up around the rediscovered workshop is like something never - if rarely - seen before. Tents are pitched in every area where one could be pitched, and every other dragon one meets is a guard sent to protect the hundreds of archeologists who clearly threw their own safety out the window to be here, too enthralled in science to consider the fact that they're in one of the most dangerous environments in the world. The air is thick with campfire smoke and maybe a few more chemicals than is safe. Rubble from the excavated workshop is strewn everywhere. Evidently, no dragon cared to pick it up yet. It is down a path guarded by patrols and led strictly by guides that one can reach the workshop, and it is the path you took today. Just outside the gaping maw that is the workshop's entrance sits a table, upon which components are laid out. Archeologists lean and preen over it, voices rising and falling as they get into arguments over their interpretation of the object, which is surely correct. In the midst of them sits an exhausted looking imperial, a scroll laid out neatly in front of her with absolutely nothing written on it. Her eyes rise to see you approach and she perks up considerably. Standing (causing most of the archeologists around her to step away) she gestures you forward. "Interested in giving it a try?" She gestures to the table with her paw, her wings stretching slightly. "They've been arguing all day and I don't buy any of their explanations." Behind her, there's a few distant protests. "My name is Cora, I'm the archivist sent to record the rediscovered inventions; I.e, I decide what's correct. Or...I would, if we could figure out what any of this was." It's with a fury that she looks back at her empty parchment - and maybe the archeologists. She turns back to you and considers for a moment, and then she's suddenly behind you, pushing you towards the table. "A fresh eye! That's what we need." She rounds the table and sits down again, pushing her glasses back up carefully with a paw. "We've been staring at them all day, so we simply can't see the obvious. That must be it." She taps a claw on the table, where five objects stare up at you. "Go ahead," Cora encourages, "Give it a shot. Worst you can be is wrong-" She cuts herself off abruptly. You see her giant tail lash behind her. "Actually, yeah, suddenly I've decided that is pretty bad. Anyhow, go ahead." "You've heard of that old 'Serthis in a Can' prank, right? This was the prototype. They called it the 'Box Turtle'." She tapped the reeds first. "These were made into a thick paper used in the construction of a sturdy box. In the bottom of that box sat a very strong spring. Then they'd stuff an old turtle shell full of all kinds of noisy things and just... cram it down in the box right on top of that spring, see--" Pantomime time, complete with fake exertion so convincing she even broke a sweat. "And quickly close the lid." "Wrap it up nice and pretty like a package with the twine and tell another dragon you brought them a gift. When they open it up, POP! Out comes a scary, rattling thing! Oh yes," she continued, smiling and folding her claws over her belly, "Very popular with pranksters. A traditional practical joke carried out to this day, albeit with more refined supplies. Googly eyes make the whole thing much more convincing."

Googly eyes make the whole thing much more convincing."

Prompts? I love prompts! Gillian Gillian carefully inspects the objects on the table, long neck craning to view them from all angles. "I take it these were all found together?" "Wouldn't be on the same table if they weren't," Cora grumbles. "Well, it seems tempting at first to sort them by material," Gillian begins, to the delight of a nearby archaeologist, "but these dragons were engineers. Inventors. They wouldn't think about material, they'd think about purpose." She carefully sifts through the scrapmetal, isolating a pair of pulley-wheels. "A pulley system," she begins, "made of the strongest things they could find - sturdy yuccarope, and borer metal." "That's only a couple of the items. What about the rest of it?" Gillian takes a deep breath, then continues. "Well, if you hang the pulley from the ceiling, you can store it up above, where it's out of your way until you need it. Were the ceilings vaulted?" An archaeologist from the crowd steps forward. "Based on the support structures remaining, the ceiling would be vaulted - and if it was commonplace to suspend machinery from the ceiling, that would explain why they reinforced it so throughly." "Thank you." Gillian smiles at them, before gently flipping over the turtle shell, revealing a smooth, polished underside and small holes drilled into the sides. "And here we have a basket of sorts - one that will last through frequent use. Hang it from the spring, and you have something that will stretch out when weight is added to the basket; a scale. In fact - what wall was this found near?" Wordlessly, Cora points a claw at the wall. Gillian flits over there, using her wings to disrupt the dust on the wall enough to reveal the straight lines and abbreviated markings etched in. "Hang the whole thing near a wall, and lower it to the same point every time, and you have a scale that can be hoisted out of the way. But with a copper spring, this couldn't have been used for heavy objects, as the spring would stretch out too fast and need to be replaced. Rather, a lightweight spring like that would make a scale that could measure relatively small changes - a scale that could weigh reeds." Gillian lands on the edge of the table, looking out at the crowd. "I mean... I could probably build a replica, if you want a demonstration." Cora looks up from her note-taking. "That would be appreciated before we publish this, but for now I think we have a solid working theory. It was a pleasure working with you." Gillian beams. "Of course!"

Gillian carefully inspects the objects on the table, long neck craning to view them from all angles. "I take it these were all found together?"

"Wouldn't be on the same table if they weren't," Cora grumbles.

"That's only a couple of the items. What about the rest of it?"

Gillian takes a deep breath, then continues. "Well, if you hang the pulley from the ceiling, you can store it up above, where it's out of your way until you need it. Were the ceilings vaulted?"

An archaeologist from the crowd steps forward. "Based on the support structures remaining, the ceiling would be vaulted - and if it was commonplace to suspend machinery from the ceiling, that would explain why they reinforced it so throughly."

"Thank you." Gillian smiles at them, before gently flipping over the turtle shell, revealing a smooth, polished underside and small holes drilled into the sides. "And here we have a basket of sorts - one that will last through frequent use. Hang it from the spring, and you have something that will stretch out when weight is added to the basket; a scale. Wordlessly, Cora points a claw at the wall.

Gillian flits over there, using her wings to disrupt the dust on the wall enough to reveal the straight lines and abbreviated markings etched in. She was certain one of them must be the researcher she had come looking for, but the pressure of this sudden attention was making her self-conscious in an unpleasant, almost visceral way. She looked around, clutching her delivery parcel to her chest, and then down at the table. Maybe giving them an answer would be the fastest and easiest way out of this? "A... a cradle?" she said, more a question than anything else. The refined Imperial before her raised an eyebrow. Clearly a further explanation was needed. Amber folded the package under her wing, pressing it to her body with it to clear her hands. "Well, see, if you empty the shell, leaving only its roof, and then bolt these metal... what do you call them? These tiny rectangles with the two holes, the ones that look like two odd rings forming an "8"?" Amber started, pulling the objects on the table to demonstrate as she went along. A dragon close by whispered something to her colleague at the part about the "odd rings" and the two ended up giggling - or at least started to giggle before being abruptly silenced by one of Cora's gestures. Amber hadn't minded, but she was getting into her explanation now - the idea, at first a tiny spark in her mind, was building up to a flame, to a pyre... By this point, she was in a rush to get project out, and the words were coming out one after the other, faster and faster: "You attach four of these - or six, if you'd like stability, who doesn't like stability? - and then you pull the ends of as many pieces of yuccarope as you have holes. Tie the ends into knots, only make sure the remaining lengths are the same, or your egg may plummet down. Tie the ropes' other ends together, preferably to a metal ring so it doesn't tangle as easily, fill the shell with dry reeds or winter fur to form the bedding - and then hang it where you can see it, because hatchlings are the WORST. It could make a nice cot for a smaller breed..." She could see it - a newborn Spiral, still short, coiled like a snake in a bed practically made for coiling. "And the spring is, well, for when you want excitement for the hatchling. Attach it to the top before you hang it on your ceiling and there you go! A bouncing bed. You know, if you're reckless, or you have Spirals." Amber sighed, finally slowing down. The dragons around were waiting in silence, as if they had expected something else- perhaps something more sophisticated than a bouncing baby bag. She looked at them sheepishly. "Is... Is any of you called Dustglider, by the way? I'm no engineer. I was just trying to deliver a parcel." (edit: typo. I'm sorry)

Day One: String and a hardshell

Amber blinked at the crowd that had gathered around the worktable, and was now staring at her.

By this point, she was in a rush to get project out, and the words were coming out one after the other, faster and faster:

"You attach four of these - or six, if you'd like stability, who doesn't like stability? - and then you pull the ends of as many pieces of yuccarope as you have holes. Tie the ends into knots, only make sure the remaining lengths are the same, or your egg may plummet down.
