This is a Nuzlocke style story set in the Southern Icefield. It will run in a similar vein to a Pinkerlocke, but instead of relying on drops from Pinkerton, what happens each day will instead be determined by RNG rolls.

Rules
Every day I use an online number generator to get a number between 1-150. The number I get determines what happens in the Nuzlocke.

1-25: Death Streak
I must roll a 6-sided dice for every dragon in the Nuzlocke. If anyone rolls a 1, they die and must be exalted. Nesting dragons are exempt from this.

26-50: Coliseum
I must spend the day in the Coliseum, completing a minimum of 10 battles in a venue of my choice. The fighters are chosen by RNG. If a fighter is defeated, I must roll a 6-sided die. If they roll 1-3, they die, if they roll 4-6, they survive but will be injured for the next 5 days.

Injured dragons are susceptible to death on rolls of 1-3 on a Death Streak day, and will die if they are defeated in Coli a second time.

51-75: Lore
I must write a lore entry for the Nuzlocke.

76-100: Art
I must either draw or buy art for the Nuzlocke.

101-125: New Dragon
I must go to the AH and buy the cheapest dragon of a randomly selected breed. I can vary this up between buying adults and hatchlings.

The breed rolls are as follows:
1. Bogsneak
2. Coatl
3. Tundra
4. Ridgeback
5. Fae
6. Wildclaw
7. Spiral
8. Guardian
9. Pearlcatcher
10. Mirror
11. Imperial
12. Nocturne
13. Skydancer
14. Snapper

126-150: Breeding
I can breed two eligible dragons from the Nuzlocke. Once the nest hatches, I flip a coin. On heads the hatchling survives, on tails they die and must be exalted. If no dragons are eligible for breeding or it won't make sense lore-wise, I can choose to buy a hatchling off the AH instead, or do something else.

Other things to keep in mind:
  • Familiars will be only given to the dragons from the loot they've won in the Coliseum, but apparel and skins will be applied as I see fit.
  • I might do lore entries even if I roll something other than a lore number.
  • Site-compliant violence and similar will be featured, as well as death, as you'd expect. Most posts will contain warnings about the specific content they feature.

She didn't know why, she didn't know how - but they took her. But they didn't have her any more. Spindle had broken free, and she'd rather die than be caught by them again. So she ran. Her body ached from the cold, whipping wind, and her feet were starting to grow completely numb from the snow and ice underneath them. She could barely see through the blizzard, but she persisted, pushing on without stopping or looking back. When Spindle first managed to escape, she was sure her kidnappers were right behind her. But as the tundra around her grew colder and the ground rose higher and higher, all signs of her pursuers disappeared. Good, Spindle thought. I hope you freeze to death! Yet as she continued to ascend up the mountain, the air only grew icier and thinner, and it was getting hard to breathe. Her lungs felt as if they were screaming for her to stop and catch her breath, and her muscles were trembling with the effort of every step forward. It was quickly becoming evident she would be the one to freeze to death, cold and lost and all alone on this terrible, unforgiving mountaintop. A wave of lethargy suddenly washed over Spindle, and all she wanted was to lie down and sleep. Still she stumbled onward, tripping over her own feet and gasping in the snow-freckled air, her energy seeping from her like steam from boiling water. She was about to give up and let the cold take her, when one of her feet, instead of meeting snow or ice under it, met... nothing. Before she could fully comprehend what was happening, her body toppled forward, and then she was falling. Everything around her was a blur of blue and white, air whistling sharply by her ears. When her exhausted mind finally caught up to what was happening, it was all Spindle could do to flap her wings to try and stop her fall. But her wings were rigid and frosty and feeble, and they did nothing to help her in this moment. Oh, well. She didn't want to die, but she had a feeling things would end like this the moment they stole her from her Clan. That it was happening now and not a few days ago, or a few days into the future, really made no difference. Spindle closed her eyes and braced herself for the pain. Any moment now. Any moment now... Thump. Huh. That wasn't as painful as she had anticipated. In fact, it was barely painful at all. And were those feathers she felt around her? Spindle opened her eyes and realised she was being carried, wrapped tightly in the arms of a dragon much larger than herself. She blinked up at them in confusion, but before she could respond, they landed on the ground and unceremoniously plopped her down in front of them. "Ow," she murmured, slowly righting herself and then looking up. The Skydancer seemed to belong perfectly to this land of snow and ice - her feathers were pale blue, and ice crystals seemed to grow around her body, clinging to her like a strange glacial cloak. "Um." Spindle didn't know how to feel. She didn't exactly have the best experience with strangers so far, but this one did just save her life. "Thank you?" she said, suspicion laced in her voice and expression. The Skydancer stared down at her coolly. "Don't thank me just yet, child," she said in a monotone voice. Spindle didn't know what that meant, but she didn't like the sound of it. She took a moment to glance around her surroundings. They seemed to be in a cave... but made of ice. The walls here were made of thick, shining glaciers, and there was a peculiar echo to every noise, each sound bouncing off the ice and reverberating. Spindle noticed collections of colourful crystals growing in spurts along the walls and the icy ground, jutting out like stalagmites and stalactites. Some of them were glowing. "Where are we?" she asked, her eyes returning to the Skydancer. The Skydancer exhaled a long breath. "You are in the land under the Fortress of Ends," she explained emotionlessly. "You are now trapped here, forever." Fear washed over Spindle, colder than anything she'd felt since she made her escape. "What?" she choked out. There was a long pause as the Skydancer considered her. Spindle tried to process this new situation, but the rush of adrenaline that had kept her alert so far was starting to ebb away, and she was growing tired again. And, compared to back out in the blizzard, the air here was rather comfortable - still tinged with a definite iciness, but it was bearable. The Skydancer seemed to realise Spindle's train of thought, for she finally spoke up. "You will not survive here on your own. Not yet." Spindle didn't know what to do with this information. "Okay," she said. "That kind of sucks, but I figured." Another pause, and the Skydancer hummed. "I have already saved you once. It would be a waste for you to die now," she said, and Spindle thought that sounded like an excuse, but she didn't say that. "Come, then. I'll look after you, for now." The Skydancer stretched her wings, getting ready to take off. Spindle forced herself to stand up. "Aren't you gonna ask where I'm from? Or anything?" she asked, then gave a long yawn. The Skydancer paused, and then leaned down and reached out her arms to Spindle. "No. I've been here long enough to know how most dragons end up here," she answered, picking Spindle up and holding her against her chest. "Okay," Spindle said, fighting to stay awake. It was so nice to finally be out of the cold, and the Skydancer's feathers felt so warm. "Can I ask... just one question?" "What is it, little one?" Spindle looked up at her. "What's your name?" Maybe she was just imagining it, but she thought she saw the Skydancer trying to stifle a smile. "I am Moroz. And you are?" Spindle closed her eyes, letting her head rest against Moroz's blue feathers. "Spindle," she said, and then happily let unconsciousness wash over her. They took her.

She was still surprised how warm it could feel even with the thick glaciers surrounding her. Or maybe her body was just getting used to the cold. The Mirror walked towards the opening of the cave, curiously peeking outside. More large, expansive ice chambers stretched as far as her eyes could see. It was as if she was in a whole new world, made entirely of ice and crystals. But there was no sign of Moroz, the Skydancer that had saved her. Spindle strained her ears, but she heard nothing, and it was impossible to use her nose in this harsh air. So she turned on her heat sensor vision and scanned the area anew. Nothing, nothing... And then there it was. A small blip on her radar off in the distance, hidden from her normal view by clumps of crystals. Spindle hesitated. The heat signature looked kind of small, unlike the tall stature of Moroz she remembered. But maybe that was just a trick of the distance. Maybe if she got closer, the signature would become clearer. Besides, she was pretty curious what else could possibly be here in this wasteland. With one last glance back at the comfortable cave she had slept in, Spindle trotted towards the heat signature. It took a little while for her to scramble her way past the ice and dodge the crystalline structures of the area, but as she got closer she could tell the signature was hardly getting any bigger than before. Whatever it was, it was of a similar size to her. Trying to be as quiet as possible, the Mirror slowed her pace to a gentle walk, and slowly tip-toed around the clutch of green-and-pink crystals that sprouted from the earth. Just on the other side, the creature stirred, and snow crunched under what must have been their steps... But Spindle was so concentrated on keeping an eye on the signature, she forgot to pay attention to her usual vision, and suddenly there was a sharp pain as something pierced her foot. "Ow!" she exclaimed, and in her surprise she ended up slipping and rolling head-first to the other side of the crystals. She heard a yelp, and before she could stop herself, she shrieked, too. Scrambling to her feet, Spindle looked around wide-eyed, crest bristling as she prepared for a fight. But instead of some kind of beast or wild animal, her eyes landed on a dragon. It was a little Nocturne, speckled with dark and light markings, a pair of purple wings, and very bright blue eyes. And he was currently peeking out at her from behind a boulder. As the realisation sunk in, both of them said a little "oh" in unison. Spindle reassured her hammering heart it was okay to calm down, though she still gave the Nocturne a distrusting look. "Uh, hi?" The Nocturne emerged from his hiding spot, blinking at her curiously. "Hi," he replied, and gave her a tentative smile. "I didn't know there were other dragons here! I thought I was all alone! Seriously, I'm so relieved!" he rambled, his initial surprise quickly giving way to an unbridled joy. Spindle found herself smiling, too. It was good to see another dragon. Who knew, maybe there were even more of them out here? She'd have to ask Moroz. The Nocturne broke her reverie. "What's your name?" "I'm Spindle," she said, watching as he grinned and bounced around excitedly. "I'm Harper!" he said in turn. "Are you lost, too?" Before Spindle could even think about an answer, Harper continued. "My Clan lives in the Icefields. We were on our way to a new camp, and I was a bit behind. I mean, even though I hatched here, it's still hard to get used to the cold, you know? And a storm was coming, so everyone wanted to go as fast as possible." "Anyway, like I said, I was at the back of the group, and then I noticed a strange dip in the snow nearby! I tried to tell someone, but they didn't really care. Actually I think they were kind of annoyed," Harper paused, then shrugged his own words off. "So I went to check it out... But it turned out to be a hole, and I fell through!" he said, gesturing wildly with his hands. "Of course, it was no problem, I just caught myself in the air and flew... But then I couldn't get back out. I couldn't see the hole any more. It's like it just vanished! So, I decided to fly down and see what I could find here. And then I met you!" Harper grinned. "So what's your story?" Spindle blinked. That was a lot to take in. Not to mention, she didn't exactly feel like sharing her own fate with a stranger. "Yeah, I fell through too," she said, and it seemed to satisfy Harper. "Alright! That makes two of us! We should stick together," he said. "Yeah," Spindle agreed, looking over her shoulder towards the cave. It was still there, just as empty as she had left it. Maybe she should take Harper there, and the two of them could wait for Moroz together. But just as the idea entered her mind, a large, dark shadow swooped over the two of them. They looked up, but whatever it was had already gone by, and there was a loud thump of someone landing nearby. Harper gasped, scrambling closer towards Spindle. "What was that?" he whispered. Spindle gulped. She had no idea, but still she stretched her crest and raised her chin. "We're about to find out," she answered as footsteps neared them, and Harper cowered behind her. "Moroz," she said, finding herself smiling up at the Skydancer. She didn't know why, but she was already very fond of Moroz. Maybe it was because she was the only adult dragon in the vicinity. Or maybe Moroz just had that vibe about her that reminded Spindle of her own mother. "Spindle," Moroz greeted in turn, fully emerging into view. "And who is that?" Spindle looked over her shoulder to find Harper giving her a questioning stare. But realising there was another friendly dragon about, he leapt from behind her with a grin. "I'm Harper! I'm Spindle's friend." It was the Mirror's turn to stare at Harper. Friend? They had only just met. They must have very different definitions of what a friend is, but she didn't comment on that as Moroz spoke up. "Is that right? Well, nice to meet you, Harper. I am Moroz," she said, her antennae twitching. "Now, is this friend of yours the reason you decided it would be a good idea to leave the cave on your own?" she asked Spindle. Spindle's twisted her feet, fidgeting. "You weren't around! I didn't know if you'd come back," she argued. "I saw a heat signature nearby, so I wanted to check. I thought it might be you," she explained sheepishly. Moroz shook her head, but she didn't seem angry. Really, she hardly seemed to reflect any emotion as she spoke. "Then I am sorry to have made you think so. I had to leave for a while - you were asleep for two days, and I couldn't sit around you the whole time." Spindle's eyes bulged. Two days?! She had thought it had been a few hours at most. But now that she knew that, she could suddenly feel a wave of ravenous hunger grip her stomach. Stars, how long has it been since she'd eaten? Her last meal must have still been back at her Clan, the evening before she was taken. As if in response, her stomach growled loudly. She winced, and Harper giggled, but then nodded. "I'm hungry, too," he commented. "Well, you are in luck," Moroz said in a tone of voice Spindle was learning was her version of a smile. "I have been out hunting. Come, let us return to the cave," she said to Spindle. Harper stared up at her with wide, pleading eyes. "Can I come too?" Moroz paused, considering, and finally gave a nod. "Very well, you may come with us. Now let's get going, before someone steals our meal." The Skydancer took off, but she stayed low to the ground and flapped her wings gently, flying slow enough for the two hatchlings to keep up with her. Harper leapt into the air, and Spindle decided to follow them from the ground. Her feet practically didn't feel the cold any more, anyway. But as she trotted back towards the cave, her thoughts lingered on what Moroz had said. Let's get going, before someone steals our meal. So there were other dragons here... if that's what the Skydancer had meant. Spindle still couldn't help but imagine what kind of beasts might make these lands their home, and the thought her kidnappers might be one of them - after all they must have brought her to the Icefields for a reason - made her shudder from something other than just the cold. A large feathered head emerged from behind the crystals, and Spindle breathed a sigh of relief. "Moroz," she said, finding herself smiling up at the Skydancer. It was covered in thick fur and had strange, boney carapaces, but she wasn't about to complain. Just the sight of it made her mouth water, and she didn't bother to ask how Moroz had taken it down, content on just settling in and feasting, with Harper eagerly doing the same by her side. By the time they were done, Spindle was still hungry. The creature was thin to begin with, and even taking the time to get to its bone marrow left her with little to show for it and an ache in her teeth. Still, it would have to do for now. Moroz waited patiently, and when the two hatchlings finally finished and settled, she approached them. "We must discuss our situation, little ones." Spindle glanced longily at her makeshift bed, but turned back to Moroz. "Yeah. I'm still not sure where we really are," she said. "We're under the ice!" Harper offered helpfully. Moroz nodded. You are not far off. We are deep underground, in a maze of caves and chambers existing underneath the Icefields," she explained. "It is said that this place first came into being after a catastrophe caused one of the mountains to collapse under itself, creating this hollow space below ground. Whatever the case, it has existed for a very long time, and stretches as far as the Icefields themselves, if not more." That much Spindle could understand. But there was something that still bothered her about all of this. "Why can't we leave?" she asked uncertainly. Moroz closed her eyes for a moment. "There is... a magic to this place," she said slowly. "It allows anyone to come in, but nothing can go back out. The magic keeps any exits concealed, and even those who find them will be stopped by a barrier." Spindle and Harper exchanged glances. "But where does it come from? And why?" Harper asked, confused. Moroz shook her head. "I do not know. I have lived here for many years, but no amount of searching has lead me to any answers." "Did you fall through here, too?" Spindle asked, tilting her head curiously. Moroz looked away, a shadow passing over her features before they settled back to their usual blankness. "Yes," she said simply. "But that doesn't matter now. What matters is what will happen to you two." Harper winced. "We can't... stay with you?" he asked hopefully. There was a long pause, and the Skydancer released a measured exhale. "Let me explain something to you," she began. "Life here in the Underice is hard. Many creatures fall through the cracks and end up here - over the years, some have adapted, but even the Icefields aren't a bountiful place to live," she said with the hints of a frown. "Finding food is difficult." Spindle followed her gaze to the remains of the creature they had eaten. It had been scrawny, and if Spindle had really been asleep for two days, she could only guess how long it had taken Moroz to track the beast and hunt it down. She gulped as she looked back at the Skydancer. "There are many dangerous creatures here," Moroz continued. "Dragons, too. And not all of them are looking to be friends. Killing to decrease competition, or cannibalise... isn't uncommon." Spindle shuddered. Next to her, she could hear Harper's quick, nervous breathing. "Are you going to eat us?" he asked quietly. Moroz shook her head. "No, of course not. But I want you to understand: you are a liability to me. Both of you," she looked between them sternly. "Looking after you will only make things harder for me." Spindle felt dejected, but she supposed she understood. It did seem a bit too good to be true, to be rescued and fed and then have someone to care for her. She couldn't blame the Skydancer for turning them away, given the circumstances. Maybe she could at least stay with Harper for now. Spindle was about to volunteer to leave her in peace, when Moroz continued. "You can stay with me, but you must understand what that means. You must pull your own weight, and be ready to learn how to fight, hunt and gather resources. Let me reiterate: living here is hard." Moroz paused to give them a mirthless smile. "But I'm afraid you've little choice." Spindle and Harper looked at each other again. What else was there to do? "Yeah, of course," she said, and Harper nodded eagerly. "Yeah! We will help you out tons! My Clan already started teaching me how to do some of that stuff. You'll see, I'm super useful!" The Nocturne said, grinning up at Moroz. Spindle frowned. Why hadn't her Clan taught her how to do any of that? Wasn't she older than Harper? The Mirror supposed it was because her Clan had been so big, so plentiful, they took their time with training the hatchlings. Now she was starting to regret spending most of her days playing around with her brothers. Her brothers... They had been taken, too. She saw them being dragged from their nest alongside her before everything turned to black. That was the last she'd seen of them. Where were they now? Had they been taken to the tundra, too? Did they manage to escape? Or were they still stuck with those haunting, terrible creatures that had stolen them all away from their home? Something bumped into her, and she looked over to see Harper eagerly carrying the bones out of the cave, chattering about cleaning time. Eager to do her part and not let Moroz think she'd be useless to have around, Spindle rushed to join him, leaving her worries for later.
