Washed onto the midnight beach, reeking of rot and sandalwood; the crest of stone and the jut of broken bone; “don’t cry over spilt milk,” clouds skitter over the moon. The lull of the waves, the longing for warmth, rags piled in the corners, a single lit candle. Crusts of wet sand, cold joints, snippets of half-forgotten songs. Ragged hide, shimmering scale, the compulsion to tread paths yet unfollowed.
