Note to the reader :
These writings are the result of long research, both from books and people,
who were often determined not to be found.
You'd never believe how hard it is to find a book in a library.
The data we managed to gather has been organized in the form of a story,
to make them more understandable by the masses.
However, indication on sources used have been given.
May knowledge prevent us from repeating mistakes.

III - Decision
(testimony from family)
To everyone else, nothing much had happened that day.
Many outsiders to the Earth territory went that way
in order to avoid the influence of the Wyrmwound.
They had just been two more travellers.
When it came to Akelei, though...
She had quickly realized the only difference between the stranger and her.
Lineage.
Somehow, she felt that she deserved to be considered the same,
when her siblings and her were treated just as any other youngling.
In fact, she had come to understand how difficult it was for her parents to find them
a place where they would belong. There were just too many like her.
But it didn't have to stay that way.
On the day she came to this conclusion, she swore to herself that no matter how,
she would make everyone look at her the same way she had looked at the stranger.
With awe.
In the dark, the crystal glows...

IV - The end justifies the means
(anonymous testimony)
Akelei was aware that the goal she had set herself was hazardous, to say the least.
She had some assets, though. To begin with, she was very smart, and she had been one of the dragons in charge of trading and bartering with foreign clans.
You didn't fool Akelei easily. Even if you did, you prayed that she would never,
ever realized, for she had made some nasty allies while working.
The most notorious of them was a silent Coatl, whose name nobody knew.
He always carried a rusted cleaver around, surrounded by mist at all times,
concealing him when he needed to disappear. Which he did often.
Some had been able to take a glance at him.
The ones who hadn't drown at once in an abyss of madness spread the word of a dark fur,
of big, empty, implacable icy eyes, and a wide, frosty smile.
Although he had never killed anyone on her behalf,
very few doubted he was stranger to the blood stains on the cleaver...
For now, he just scared people who owed something to Akelei, and acted as his bodyguard.
We will get back to him in due time.

V - The journey begins...
(from notes by Akelei and various testimonies)
The young Coatl had been thinking about it thoroughly. Whatever way she was looking at it,
two things prevented her from reaching the power she craved for :
the secret surrounding these mysterious markings, and... being single.
Akelei decided to take care of these matters altogether.
Thus began a succession of travels around the Earth territory, asking people around anytime she could. Several months later, on a trip to the Starfall Isles, she had befriended a sympathetic young Wildclaw, named Pippet. He was willing to help her in her endeavours, but didn't seem interested in anything else but her personality, something that she had trouble comprehending. She had always been more at ease playing with numbers and keeping accounts than interacting with people, anyway. Which was probably the reason why her search hadn't been very successful until one day...

VI - Her
(from notes by Akelei)
I was in the middle of a conversation with the leader of a Wind clan,
a rather young Skydancer who went by the name of Mercuria, when she barged in.
Her body and wings were purple, her eyes a pale and soft blue.
Faintly glowing runes adorned her, casting an eerie golden light around her.
Her clothes intensified this feeling, as they were white for the most part,
embroidered with gold threads. Taking a small test tube out of her pouch,
she presented it to Mercuria, while taking a look at me.
"Here's what you asked for, boss."
"Come on, Acquiesce" her chief said after sighing,
"I already asked you not to address me so formally!
Also why "boss"? You didn't come from the Shifting Expanse, did you?"
I wasn't paying attention at all. So that's her name...
Deep in my thoughts, I didn't get what Mercuria was saying,
but I somehow realized that she was talking to me now.
"Sorry, what were you saying?"
"Acquiesce here - she pointed a finger to the other Skydancer
don't look into her eyes, I thought - is the herborist and potionmaker of the clan.
She's willing to teach you what she knows.
It seems like you were interested about genes, am I right?"
Suddenly overwhelmed by surprise, I could only stammer this new word.
"G-genes?"

VII - A new direction
(from notes by Akelei)
Acquiesce spoke up.
"That's what influences our looks.
You told boss you wanted to know more about some strange markings, didn't you?"
As I nodded, and Mercuria sighed again, she went on.
"These are caused by genes. It's still unclear where these markings come from,
but I believe learning a thing or two with me won't do any harm.
Also, you probably heard about it, our clan has a lot of members who like travelling
all around Sornieth, so you might get some info through one of them."
I was astonished. The more she talked, the more my goal seemed closer than it was before.
Of course, I immediately accepted the condition she stated.
Do not ever use the knowledge to harm in any way.
I quickly told Pippet about the deal I had just agreed to.
He listened silently, visibly happy and relieved to see my quest progressing.
After I was done, he waited for a little while before speaking,
gazing at the quiet bamboo forest bathing in the moonlight.
"I will stay here with you, I think you could use some support."
I walked to him, surprised once again.
We had originally planned to part ways after leaving this clan
to increase our chances of finding clues.
As I turned my head to look at him, I smiled.
"Alright then, I still have so much to learn, I'm glad you're by my side!"
He returned my smile.
"These are very wise words."
Back then, I didn't see how sad his smile was...
