Around the World
Without Leaving Home!

A Lore Game for the Not-So-Adventurous

Inspired by trading games like World Tour, as well as many of the wonderful lore threads in Dragon Share, Around the World Without Leaving Home is a lore writing game for those who like the idea of their dragons visiting other dragon clans, but would prefer to keep their dragons stored in their home lairs instead of sending them out to other players - as well as for players who love to write lore, but don't want to add any other dragons to their lairs.

How Can I Participate?
I'm glad you asked! There are two ways to participate: first, sending your dragons Around the World' by adding them to the active travellers spreadsheet, and second, by writing a short piece of lore for others' dragons about their 'visit' to your lair. You can choose to participate in just one way, or you can do both!

Sending Your Dragons Around the World
  • To add a dragon to the spreadsheet of active travellers, please fill out the following form: Add Dragon Form. Your dragon's information will be automatically added! Note: by adding a dragon you accept the fact that others' ideas for lore may not be identical to your own. If you have a very specific arc or such in mind for a dragon, they're probably not a good candidate.
  • Please do not add more than two active dragons to the sheet at one time. Everyone deserves to have a turn! (You are more than welcome to add additional dragons after removing previous ones - just no more than two active at once.)
  • After adding your dragon, you may want to reply to this thread to let others know that there is a new dragon on the active traveller list!
  • When you decide that your dragon's journey should come to end and want it to return home, PM me (@vegastellaris) with the subject line "My ATW dragon is coming home!" and include the dragon's name and ID in the message body and I will delete it from the active travellers sheet.
  • You are encouraged, but not required, to write lore for other travelling dragons after adding your own.
  • Please remember to thank the writers who write for your dragons!

Writing Lore for Around the World Dragons
  • Take a look at the active travellers spreadsheet for dragons that interest you. The dragons' pictures are linked to their pages so you can click through to visit their profile and read any existing lore they may have.
  • Once you've found a dragon you're interested in, check to see if its owner has included any notes. If they've listed anything as a Do Not Want (DNW) should not be including in your lore, full stop. Aside from DNWs, anything goes! Some owners may have other prompts/requests but you're not obligated to use them.
  • Now that you've picked a dragon, pretend they're on a journey and have come to your lair for a little while, and write about what happens! Once you're done writing make a new reply to this thread, ping the dragon's owner, and share the dragon's new experiences!
  • ALTERNATE OPTION: If you know you really want to write for a specific dragon, but don't have time at present, you can post a 'claim' (much like in dragon share) to let a dragon's owner know you'll be writing for it. If you choose to make a claim post first please edit the post to include your lore within ten days.
  • Lore should be a minimum of 100 words long. There is no maximum, but please be mindful of the fact that many dragons may have lore from lots of authors, and at some point you will run into the profile character limit.

Housekeeping

I've tried to structure this game so it'll mostly run itself without needing much interference from me (and in the future, I hope to be able to add more functionality to make all spreadsheet functions automated) - however, I'll still be checking in to make sure things are running smoothly. I hope that we can all have fun writing together!

You can ping me (@vegastellaris) in this thread or PM me with subject line "Around the World Game" if you need to get my attention or report an issue (please be patient if you don't receive a response immediately; I'm not online every second of every day but I'll do my best to get back to you as soon as I'm able).

This game is NOW OPEN! I hope that we can have some fun writing for different dragons! @vegastellaris - for Celosia

"Celosia approached the Alliance of the Avatir Arach's territory with trepidation. She had lost her brothers to the Lightweaver's calling, and she had heard that the Alliance was a haven to those called by the Tidelord, or the call of the waves as she'd heard a blue Pearlcatcher call it.

She didn't exactly know what she expected to find in this safe haven for travelers, a purpose maybe? A calling? Who knew, she sure didn't.

A star-garbed Skydancer approached her not far from the entrance of the territory.

"Hello, welcome to the Alliance!" She said in a soothing way, "My name's Kraken, and the two Pearlcatchers over there are Lyn and Raine, if you are injured it's best to see them. If you need anything else, feel free to ask anyone here, we're all more than willing to help!"

Celosia thanked her, but still felt a bit more puzzled than she felt she should have been. Was this what a haven was like? Being left to your own purposes and figuring out what questions to ask each dragon? She had traveled far from home to come here, and she seemed to be finding more questions than answers!

A dark dragon with greenish markings and a witch's hat approached her. "Don't mind Kraken, she just found a mate and her mind is elsewhere. Name's Iriehari, but please call me Irie. I'll give you a tour if you'd like."

The autumn dragon nodded her acceptance, and followed the Skydancer.

"The lair is broken into caves, which can be shared or individual depending on the needs of the Arach, our word to describe ourselves rather than dragons. I share a cave with my friend and her daughter and granddaughter at this time, so our cave is a bit larger and with greater access to the open air. Some of the older dragons like to be closer to the ground, so they have darker, smaller caves to accommodate them. We have many caverns to choose from, but feel free to stay with Imi and I if you're feeling overwhelmed!"

Irie was called away shortly after the description, but Celosia didn't feel so overwhelmed anymore. The dragons, or Arachi as they called themselves, were friendly and welcoming, and while it was still very weird, she wondered if traveling the world wouldn't be such a bad life, if all the places she visited were like this."

Hello! I've added Bonzai here to the form! He's currently a gene project so his looks are subject to change in the near future. He has no current lore or role in my lair, but I'm hoping any ideas you have for him will be awesome. "Bonsai knew from a young age that he was different than other dragons. He could see in only shades of green, brown, and both black and white - but other dragons seemed to be able to see every color imaginable! They would tell him that one thing was purple and another orange, but Bonsai would commonly see the different colors as green or brown rather than these imaginary purples and oranges.

It was very difficult to socialize with his nestmates and fellow youth due to his irregularity, but Bonsai eventually found a friend who didn’t judge him in his Cloud Chaser familiar. The dolphin-like creature didn’t speak dragon, and Bonsai didn’t speak dolphin, but the two of them got along quite well. So when the greenish dolphin took to the waves- Bonsai chose to follow it, his friend had not led him astray before.

It led him across the Sea of a Thousand Currents where, nestled along the coast of the giant sea, was a little dragon Alliance, where the Cloud Chaser seemed to have directed him to. Giving his friend a chance, he made his way into the Alliance’s territory, where he was greeted by a forest colored Skydancer and her darker Coatl companion.

“Hello!” She said brightly, “I’m Nym, and this is Luma - is this your first trip to the Alliance?”

Bonsai could only nod his head, glancing at his Cloud Chaser companion out of the corner of his eye.

Luma, the Coatl, followed his gaze and leapt towards the water, making weird noises that Bonsai eventually recognized as dolphin speak! Glancing back at the Skydancer found her shaking her head and muttering under her breath.

“Oh don’t mind Luma, she’s harmless really, but she was definitely meant to live here. Where are you from?” Nym spoke as they walked further away from the shoreline.

“Ah, just down the shoreline actually, I grew up in shadow, but they didn’t like my eyes there.” He said sheepishly.

“Your eyes?” She asked, “I don’t see anything wrong with them?”

“I guess you wouldn’t, I only see in shades of green and brown, they called it an abnormality and wanted to send me away. I’m lucky my new clan found me when they did.”

“That’s impressive!” Nym said, “I’m sure others might consider it weird, but forest colors are very lovely - you ever think you might have been blessed by a forest nymph or something? Should try your hand at gardening, or something to do with plants!”

“I’d never thought of fit that way.” Bonsai said.

“Well, sometimes you just need someone to give you an idea, it’s up to you on whether or not you decide to take the leap!” She glanced around, “Ah, I got to go, have to get back to the forge before Zoria attempts to burn it down again!”

She was an interesting dragon, but he couldn’t help but wonder whether or not she had the right of it."
