The story of this clan begins in the Windswept Plateau. It was there, deep down in an abyss somewhere in an open field, that Nakisisa found her Charge - the ruins of an old city. It didn't take long before more dragons started to join. Maeve was the first to settle down and soon fell in love with Nakisisa. More dragons joined, including Arild, Amaqjuaq and Keezheekoni. Both Hototo and Hunapo were soon born into the clan, and Yolihuani and Malantha joined a while after. They decided to form a clan: the Quarteshy clan.
Their lives took a drastic turn when the Great Fire hit. This tragedy destroyed their home and killed their family and friends. Keezheekoni was killed and resurrected, Maeve lost her brother, Hunapo lost his parents, and many others were killed. They were forced to travel Sornieth in search of a new home, and after a while they settled in the Viridian Labyrinth, renaming their home Quarteshy once again. There they met Eztli, who soon fell in love with Amaqjuaq. Things never returned to normal, however. There was always a certain feeling in the air that no one could explain.
After a while, their lives changed once again. Dragons started to die or disappear, and it all seemed to connect to their old home in the Windswept Plateau. Once only Maeve and Nakisisa were left, they traveled to the old Quarteshy where they found their friends, waiting. It is there that they met the Gladekeeper, who bestowed them with their current task:
Keep Sornieth safe.
Since then, they travel Sornieth as The Travelling Caravan of Dubnos. They trade mainly in reptiles, medicinal plants, bones, minerals and books. But this is simply a front. They also formed the Soul Hunters Initiative, a group of dragons who hunt down and collect souls stuck in Limbo, and make sure they can pass over to the Otherworld.

This clan might seem like your typical group of traders, making their way through Sornieth - but not everything is always as it appears to be. Because when the buyers leave, and the clan is alone once again, their true motives for traveling Sornieth are shown:
Hunting down and collecting the souls of those stuck in Limbo.
They call themselves the Soul Hunters Initiative - or simply, S.H.I.

’Welcome, Quarteshy clan.’
The Gladekeeper’s loud but gentle voice echoed through the burned down city. The clan stood nailed to the ground, not daring to move.

You know both pain and happiness, fear and joy, anger and acceptation. I will trust you with this task, and I know you will fulfill my expectations.’
The dragons listened to her every word, completely in awe of the deity that stood in front of them. Maeve took a step forward, silently taking the task upon her to speak for her clan.
’We will accept any task you think is fit for us.’
The Gladekeeper smiled.
’Most dragons do not know of these souls, and it has to stay that way. You will hunt down and collect souls all over Sornieth, but you can’t attract too much attention. You shall be known as Eztli, which means ‘Blood’. ’
|
|
’Deirdre, my dear Deirdre. Your soul has been in torment ever since you died and were resurrected in the Great Fire. Like Beatha, you can hear but not speak with the souls. Your fiery attitude will help in teaching Hunters and Collectors all over Sornieth, so you will be a Teacher to those who are chosen to hunt down or collect souls. You shall be known as Keezheekoni, a ‘Burning fire’. ’
|
|
’Arturo. Your calm demeanor and alert state are important for your new task. Your gentle voice has enchanted many dragons, and you will use your voice as a Soul Collector to guide benevolent souls to the Gate and help them cross over. You shall be known as Hototo, the ‘Warrior spirit who sings’. ’
|
|
’Inness. I sense a darkness in your heart, one that gives you power like no one else. You will be a Soul Hunter, hunting down and catching malevolent souls. But be careful, for this darkness is both your strength and your weakness. You shall be known as Hunapo – ‘Hidden darkness’. Take this Deeprealm Trident, to aid you in your battle against malevolent souls.’
|
’Kunsgnos. I have a task for you that does not involve this clan. You will leave them for an unknown time. Leaving your mate again will be hard, but your strength is what will keep you going. You shall be known as Amaqjuaq, ‘The strong one’.’
Everyone remained silent, simply looking wide-eyed at the Gladekeeper.
’I am aware this is a lot to take in, but you are strong. Will you accept this task?’ The Gladekeeper focused her eyes on Maeve, and Maeve stepped forward again.
’Yes. And we know you will guide us. We trust you, as you trust us.’
The Gladekeeper smiled, and looked up to the sky.
’Then from this day on, the Quarteshy clan is no more. You are reborn.’

Premonition
The ground shook with a force the Imperial was all too familiar with by now. His tea spilt over the papers in front of him and onto the floor. Scrolls were falling from the birch shelves, littering the floor with all the knowledge they had gathered over the years. The clanking of falling swords echoed throughout the stone-covered halls, followed by the creaking and moaning of the walls around him.
After the rumbling stopped, Jiro looked around the room, assessing the damage. His favorite vase laid in pieces on the ground, black and gold shards contrasting the white and grey marble tiles. Most of the scrolls looked intact, although some had partially unrolled. The scroll he had been working on was lost, the tea stains allowing the ink to follow new paths they were never meant to follow. He slowly moved away from his desk, groaning at the idea he had to clean up this mess. Again.
This time, he had to make sure his brother would actually help him clean instead of moping around until Jiro was finished. Most other members had left for various assignments, leaving the two Imperials completely alone. They had to ‘hold down the fort’, as his brother had called it. Jiro called out to him. “Dai?”
The only sound that greeted him, was the reverberation of his own voice. Jiro sighed, knowing he had to check on Dai. Knowing his older brother, he was most likely in the training area, pushing himself to the brim until his muscles begged him to stop. Jiro just hoped Dai wasn’t trying any new tricks with his sword when the quake hit.
Making his way down the halls, Jiro felt irritated by the mess around him. The metal swords laying on the stone tiles reflected the candlelight. Most of the banners with the sigil on it, were torn through the middle – half of the banner laying splayed on the ground, the other half still attached to the wall. The walls themselves showed cracks in various sizes, but the majority of the crevasses were almost as large as Jiro himself. The Imperial didn’t notice the strange shadow moving over the walls, disappearing in one of the cracks.
When he finally found himself entering the training area, he saw Dai laying on the ground, unmoving. All thoughts of restoring the building left his mind in an instant. Jiro felt as if his paws were glued to the wooden floor, making him stand just as still as his brother laying on the floor. His breath hitched in his throat, making the room fall completely silent.
“I’m fine, don’t worry. Just thinking.” Dai opened one eye to look at the wide-eyed Jiro. Jiro let out a shaky breath and felt his body slump to the ground.
“For Windkeeper’s sake, stop doing that,” Jiro breathed out to his grinning brother. He should have known – Dai always pulls stuff like this.
“And this is why I take care of the Malevolent souls while you sing to those Benevolent ones, you softy.”
Jiro groaned and buried his head in his paws. He decided to talk to his brother about his behaviour at a later time; there were more concerning matters that needed to be discussed. Jiro stood up from the hard-wooden floor, and laid down next to his brother. Instead of speaking his mind immediately, he decided to bite his tongue for a little longer. It was silent between them for a while. They simply took this moment of peace to enjoy each other’s comforting company, something they didn’t do too often anymore.
He looked at the wall, eyeing the torn banner with the sigil on it. It reminded him of how far they had come. After their father disappeared, the task of leading the S.H.I. had fallen upon their shoulders. Their mother had died long before that, and the other dragons weren’t experienced enough to lead a group of dragons against the evil forces of Sornieth. The brothers had always been close, from the day they crawled out of their eggs and laid their eyes upon each other for the very first time. They had survived so much hardship together – their bond was indestructible. But time was a cruel master, and their tasks demanded all their attention. Moments like these were rare, but appreciated.
After some minutes had passed, Jiro spoke up. “I don’t think those tremors we’ve been experiencing are caused by the earth itself.” Jiro kept his gaze fixed on the ceiling, staring at the cedar planks covering him above. He was unconsciously chewing on the inside of his cheek. That feeling of peace he felt just seconds ago was gone. Something was wrong, and the longer he stayed here, the more he felt his gut start to turn. It wasn’t just a feeling of unease – this was something stronger. Something more primal.
He had dealt with Benevolent souls for years now, they didn’t scare him like they used to. He had seen the way Dai handled Malevolent souls, and he trusted his brother’s skills and judgement more than anything in Sornieth. But recently, there had been something else lurking in the shadows. It wasn’t a soul – they would have known if it was. No, it was much more sinister than that.
Dai turned his head towards Jiro, and Jiro returned the gesture. His older brother had lost his smile somewhere in the past few minutes, and it made that feeling in Jiro’s gut even stronger. The words that left Dai’s lips were spoken in a whisper, something so out of character for him, it made a chill creep down Jiro’s spine.
“I don’t think we’re alone anymore.”
Jiro instantly felt the presence of something else, just like his brother. It was cold and unsettling, as if the unknown presence was never meant to exist. It made him want to take his brother’s paw and run away, as far and as fast as he could. Every hair on his body stood on end. Another chill ran down his spine, moving alongside each individual vertebra. He sat up quickly, intending to stand up and leave whatever was present here, behind. He didn’t get that change.
The ground trembled again, with the force of a hundred volcanoes erupting after awakening from their slumber of a thousand years. The cracks in the walls moved closer together, connecting with a thunderous bang. The ceiling moaned, dust gently drifting down, as if to comfort the Imperials beneath it. The moving and shaking seized after a few seconds. The building itself creaked softly, trying to recover from the violence it endured just seconds ago.
The only sound hearable was the heavy breathing of the Imperials and the groaning of the building around them. All candles had fallen to the ground, casting the Imperials in complete darkness. For most dragons, the darkness gave a sense of unease, a feeling of fear. But this time, the darkness was more than unsettling. It was unnatural. It was the kind of darkness that made you realize it wasn’t the darkness you should be afraid of.
It’s what hides in the dark.
Jiro looked at Dai, and even though he couldn’t see his brother, he knew Dai flashed him a sad smile.
The ground shook one last time.

Maeve sat up straight, breathing rapidly, eyes wide. It takes her a few seconds to realize she’s in her caravan, next to her mate, and not actually in an abyss being buried under a falling building.
She feels Nakisisa stir next to her, and a low, groggy voice fills the room.
“Nightmare again?”
Nightmares were common for the Guardian. After seeing her brother being burned alive and losing her home, twice, peaceful sleep was something she wishes she had. But this had not been a nightmare.
The sigil in this… ‘dream’, was familiar. She had seen it every day for years, not knowing what it was back then. It had been embedded in a stone in her clan’s old city. The city built partially atop the ruins of an ancient settlement. The city that burned down, where she lost her brother to the flames. The city built in an abyss.
“We need to go back to the Windswept Plateau.”
