Welcome to the Crumbling Keep

You're wary. Your body aches. It is clear that the journey is beginning to take its toll on you. The sun no longer guides your way, the moon having taken her place in the dark sky instead.

Then, a glimpse. Lights-- lanterns? Small, sparse but definitely there in the distance. A deep breath and you're once again on your way, every painful step sending a warm rush through your body while you shiver to the cold night air.

The lanterns seem to become bigger as you approach, their soft, soothing flame calming your restless mind. They seem to mark a trail that seems inviting, the warmth of the lanterns' presence promising relief at the end.

You start down the sandy path that leads into the mountains before you. Faint bends carry you along the clean and well laid-out trail, and you subconsciously note that it leads you into a tunnel.

The light is brighter at the end of the tunnel, and your mind races as you wonder what you'll find there. Your fatigue now leaves you inching forward, each step a struggle until you find yourself collapsing at the end of the trail. Before you, acacia dotted plains stretch out as far as you can see. A stream courses through the area, yet the strange structure in the back of the valley peaks your curiosity. Various dragons notice your entry, and one flies up to greet you.

"Welcome, traveler. Welcome to the Crumbling Keep."

The soft noise of charcoal dragging across parchment was drowned out by the sound of the rain against the hut's thatched roof, its occupant eerily silent. The dragon slowly leaned back, taking the parchment by its corners and carefully lifting it off the desk. Crude, dark lines filled the paper, portraying some sort of structure. Setting the parchment back down, the dragon absently wiped his paws on his chest, black streaks staining his dull purple fur. "Nenys?" The dragon perked upon being addressed, slightly turning to look at the visitor. "Why are you still awake? I thought I told you--" "I had that dream again," the dragon interrupted. His visitor slightly tilted her head, sitting herself near the hut's entrance. The occupant grumbled a little as the visitor remained silent, a questioning look on her features. "The dream. Of the tower? Surely I have told you about it before," the dragon snorted, turning back to glance at the parchment. "Oh. That dream," the visitor replied, her tone one of disinterest. "You've got to grow tired of that childish vision one day, won't you?" the visitor then continued, absently running a claw through her manes. "Go back to sleep, young Tundra. You have a long day ahead of you." ------------------------------- "And what are you going to do about it?" "Wake up, Tundra." The young dragon's eyes snapped open to the loud, sharp tones of yesterday's visitor. The dull-coated Tundra sat upright in his nest, groaning to the rude awakening. "Pack your things, the others are at the lair's entrance. Do not keep them waiting," the visitor spoke before turning and taking her leave. "Surely they can wait a moment longer," the Tundra grumbled, crawling from his nest and wandering towards the desk. It took only a moment for the dragon to stuff his most valued belongings into a satchel. After carefully fitting the satchel straps over his shoulders and chest, the Tundra hummed approvingly, only pausing briefly to glance at the parchment on the desk. Charcoal stained paws reached out and carefully folded the paper before tucking it into the satchel. The Tundra happily sauntered towards the lair's entrance as instructed, meeting up with the dragons waiting for him. "You're late," the Mirror hissed. "Did ya forget that we were supposed to leave? Hibernatin' season is still a long, long times away, fluffy." The Tundra hummed in amusement. "And what are you going to do about it?" The crystal-clad Guardian at the Mirror's side huffed in agitation, the smaller dragons taking it as their cue to stop bickering. "Good morning Nenys," the Guardian then spoke, addressing the Tundra with a small nod. "All ready to go?" The Tundra sighed, nodding halfheartedly. "All ready." ------------------------------- Various feelings bubbled in the Tundra's belly as he gazed out over the ocean, wondering if maybe... maybe he would be able to actually do it. The trek through Starwood strand to the north-east edge of Starfall Isles always took longer than Nenys remembered. From there, the three of them would make the crossing to the Focal Point, where the Guardian would spend the day watching over Nenys like a hawk to ensure he did the work he was assigned. The Tundra quietly followed along, listening idly to his guardian's heavy footsteps compared to the frantic pace of the Mirror and his own, light padding. He didn't know the Mirror that well. The way he was dressed and his general disposition towards the other two dragons he was forced to travel with suggested something fast-paced, like a courier, or a scout, perhaps carrying something too valuable to travel by himself. Still, Nenys didn't feel the urge to ask, so he remained still as he followed the larger dragon leading them. It took another few hours before the three made it to the edge of the Arcane territory, where the Guardian halted. "Are you ready to make the crossing?" she asked, flattening the crystallized appendages that ran along her back. The Tundra remained silent for a moment. Last night's dream was still fresh in his memory, and in a moment he felt very aware of the crude drawing in his satchel. The clear weather allowed for a good view into the distance, and he felt like he could see Dragonhome from where he was stood. Various feelings bubbled in the Tundra's belly as he gazed out over the ocean, wondering if maybe... maybe he would be able to actually do it. "Nenys?" the Guardian rumbled, her tone loud and warning, as if she was aware of what the Tundra was planning. Nenys' heart was pounding, and he felt like this was his one chance-- if he didn't take it, Gods know how long he'd have to wait to try again. ------------------------------- This was the first time in his young life that he had set foot in a region that wasn't Arcane's, and the experience was unlike anything he had foreseen. The Mirror had been watching in astonishment as the Tundra forcefully beat his wings, taking to the air with ease, leaving a cloud of dust in his wake. At first there was a sense of freedom, the light air around him and the relief of breaking out. Then there was a sense of apprehension, the realization that the Guardian was right on his heels, jaws ajar and ready to strike. In a moment of clarity, Nenys channeled his magic, teleporting away to create distance between himself and his very, very angry guardian. His ears perked to her roars of anger as he frantically propelled out of her limited reach, flying out over the ocean, leaving behind his ground-bound guardian and flying away from the magical prison of Starfall Isles. The flight had been harsh despite the clear weather, strong ocean winds pushing the small Tundra towards the Scarred Wasteland. It took a lot of strength to make it to Dragonhome, but after a few hours of non-stop flight, Nenys tumbled into the warm dust of the Earth region. Exhausted more than anything, the Tundra remained where he was, body splayed out like a ragdoll. Taking a deep breath, Nenys got to his feet and began walking. This was the first time in his young life that he had set foot in a region that wasn't Arcane's, and the experience was unlike anything he had foreseen. The young dragon found shelter beneath a lone acacia tree, huddling up in the shade for some much needed rest. ------------------------------- There was always a sense of urgency in the dreams, as if only Nenys' presence could stop the structure from collapsing completely. Awakening to the cold night's air was unpleasant, Nenys thought, but it couldn't compare to being awoken by the harsh Guardian back in Starfall Isles. The Tundra chuckled to himself, giddy as he slowly stretched himself and chirped in glee over his successful escape. The flights from Starfall Isles to Dragonhome had been longer than he had thought, his sore wings reminding him of his neglect of flight practice. Taking a moment to adjust himself to the cold, hard ground underfoot, Nenys confidently began his journey. It was as if an unseen force was guiding him, beckoning him closer to the tower he had seen in his many dreams. He had spent plenty of nights wondering what exactly the dreams could mean. Why visions of a crumbled, old stone tower would recur countless of times, and the question that haunted him most, why the visions happened to him. There was always a sense of urgency in the dreams, as if only Nenys' presence could stop the structure from collapsing completely. The Tundra pondered these questions in silence, letting the cold air and the stars be his guide. Only stopping occasionally to rest or graze on the Sand Creepers and Highland Dryleaf that grew so plentiful around the Shattered Plain, Nenys silently traveled along. ------------------------------- Mountains had began to appear at the horizon, and when he looked to his right he could see The Pillar of the World in the distance. Nenys had lost count of the amount of days it took him to cross through Dragonhome. He had met various pleasant residents and travelers alike, friendly souls who shared rations and directions with him. The Tundra had thought it odd at first. He was not not used to meeting so many friendly faces, but the sense of community quickly grew on him. Nenys briefly stopped walking, taking a moment to admire the view. Mountains had began to appear at the horizon, and when he looked to his right he could see The Pillar of the World in the distance. He had always longed to visit the impressive monument one day. One day. Nenys took a deep breath and continued walking, his unseen guide steering him towards the mountains at the horizon. Only a little further, the Tundra told himself. Nenys sat himself down, craning his neck to admire the mountains before him. A narrow passage was visible from where the Tundra was sitting, and it was beckoning him. Nenys yawned and took a deep breath. "Only a little further!" the Tundra told himself, getting onto his feet and heading into the passage. The narrow path began sloping upwards, slowly becoming enveloped by the mountains until Nenys found himself travelling through a tunnel. The Tundra curiously observed the tunnel's walls, noticing various crystals sprouting from the cold, stone walls. He had never seen such beauty before, finding him increasingly mesmerized by all Dragonhome was showing him. Nenys slightly squinted as he could see light at the end of the cold tunnel, and the young Tundra began pacing up. ------------------------------- At the far end of the plains sat the tower. Nenys was blinded as he leapt out of the tunnel, tumbling onto a stone passage. A narrow passage consisting of dirt and ridges led down into a valley. The Tundra gasped in awe at the sight. A large stretch of land was perfectly encircled by the mountains he had seen before, looking mostly untouched. A single mountain stream came crashing down into the valley and coursed through the plains. At the far end of the plains sat the tower. The old, ominous stone tower he had seen in his countless dreams. The Keep that had called him. He had arrived. He was home. Lair produce

The Crumbling Keep lair is mostly self-sufficient, its residents taking pride in their hard work to provide for themselves and their kin. The residents keep to an unspoken rule that any dragon entering the lair with the intent to make it their home is expected to contribute to the clan. Those who have not yet mastered a trade of their own or aren't sure what their strengths are, are assigned a mentor to teach them skills they can use to help out.

Every resident is assigned a role that benefits the clan.

Highland Dryleaf Sand Creeper Stonewatch Flatblade Bulrush
Due to the location of the Crumbling Keep and Dragonhome's arid climate, not much grows in the above ground lair. Highland Dryleaf, Sand Creepers and Stonewatch Flatblades grow freely in the plains that make up most of the above ground territory. Bulrush grows along the stream and small lake that sits at its end.

While this flora provides part of the herbivore residents' diet, the more artistic dragons harvest and use the Bulrush to weave baskets for their clan to use. Any excess baskets are taken to the merchants for selling.

Hidden deep within the underground lair, various dragons tend to a large community garden, growing various plants for the residents to feed on. Most of the garden is occupied by various herbs and magical flora that is not meant for consumption. Beehives have been installed throughout the garden, yielding sweet, fresh honey.

Crawdad Bluegill Rainbow Trout Billy Bass
Though not many species thrive in the lair's lake, some fish have been observed swimming up the stream that leads out of the clan territory, making the crystal-clear lake their home, providing easy pickings for the less adventurous residents. Fishers occasionally make trips to the ocean to provide the clan with large amounts of seafood if necessary.

Intricate cave systems sprawl deep, deep beneath the lair, so far down that dragons who do not possess a natural coat to keep them warm are forced to bundle up before venturing down there. Beast Allies

The Crumbling Keep clan maintains a neutral disposition to Beasts of all kinds. The lair may be used by Beast caravans to rest and recover before continuing their journey through Dragonhome. Beast wares are favored by some of the Keep's dragons and will be traded for their own crafts and produce.

804.png Luka, the Longneck Mender
A brave and hard-headed Longneck was banished from her herd after saving the lone dragon from the brink of starvation. Luka swore loyalty to a quirky dragon and lived to see the end of it. While much smaller in size, she made for quite the sparring partner to the dragon, and they often came to her for wisdom. The two had been together for years. Luka saw how her dragon partner fell in love, fathered a clutch, lived through the heart-break of losing his mate, eventually succumbing to his sorrow. The Mender traveled Dragonhome for years, before finding a home with the Crumbling Keep dragons.
