Introduction
Off the coast of the Starwood Strand in the shadow of the Focal Point sits an island. Perhaps it was occupied before, as bleached ruins seem to suggest, but any trace of these old residents is long gone aside from a deep-rooted aura of magic.
The northern half rises up high above the foamy water. Caves dot the cliffs below, their crystals spilling out onto the surface in huge clusters. Warped mountains of a similar composition curl inwards to protect the western coast. They form a spine all the way down to the soft pink beaches. The island feels especially steep here as you look up at grassy hills, barely able to make out the cluster of lairs all the way at the top.
The island (plus a few bits of the Starwood Strand on the mainland) is united under the banner of the Morganite Explorers' Guild. It's a gathering of adventurers, artists, and scientists who have all found their way to it in search of inspiration, camaraderie, or just a place to rest their wings. The landscape is dotted with workshops of every kind, some shining and new, others set up in existing ruins. Everyone is has some kind of goal or fixation. It creates bonds that creep in without you noticing until you're spending all night helping with a project that you never imagined having any interest in.

Rune was not especially engrossed in her work, if she was being honest with herself. Her eyes continually drifted between the cloudless sky outside and the pile of heavy robes slumped beside her. She was not an anxious dragon, but she felt a twinge of impatience growing in her chest. The next week was to be incredibly busy and yet— The pile of fabric stirred. Rune jumped a bit. Her nerves melted away. A gentle smile tugged at the corners of her mouth. “Good evening,” she said as her companion emerged. The mass of layers slowly gained more form as they fell into place on Scry’s body. Her red eyes turned a fiery magenta in the light. She blinked without much comprehension. “What time is it?” she asked. Her voice was breathy and a bit hoarse. She was always like this after her naps. Rune consolidated her papers to give her some space. “You’ve been asleep for more than a month.” The nocturne seemed unbothered by this. “Such is the nature of my gift.” She paused a moment, then, with a sudden jolt said, “Have I missed our holiday?” Rune gave little chuckle and fixed a layer of Scry’s hood that was stuck on a horn. “You’re right on time.” “Shall we go down to the rest of the guild then? I always love these celebrations, you know.” Scry anxiously shook out her wings. This was the most active Rune had seen her since the Arcanist last spoke. It was a joy to see her like this. “I believe we shall.” [/columns]

Right On Time
High in the observatory, Rune sat amidst her sea of star charts. Light from the dying sun streamed in through the windows, bathing everything in a shade of pink as saturated as the island’s spine of crystal mountains.
Rune was not especially engrossed in her work, if she was being honest with herself. Her eyes continually drifted between the cloudless sky outside and the pile of heavy robes slumped beside her. She was not an anxious dragon, but she felt a twinge of impatience growing in her chest. The next week was to be incredibly busy and yet—
The pile of fabric stirred.
“You’ve been asleep for more than a month.”
The nocturne seemed unbothered by this.
“Such is the nature of my gift.”
She paused a moment, then, with a sudden jolt said, “Have I missed our holiday?”
Rune gave little chuckle and fixed a layer of Scry’s hood that was stuck on a horn.
“You’re right on time.”
“Shall we go down to the rest of the guild then? I always love these celebrations, you know.” Scry anxiously shook out her wings. This was the most active Rune had seen her since the Arcanist last spoke. It was a joy to see her like this.
“I believe we shall.”

Arcane answers! Learn the secrets of the universe this Starfall Celebration!” Dragons came and went in their festival revelry, some familiar island residents and others complete strangers following the crowd. Sleight was in the middle of it all. Her deft claws shuffled and fanned and flipped her deck of cards with practiced precision. This was the only time of year she went out of her way to give readings, so she might as well put on a show. “Get a once in a lifetime card reading from Morganite’s most skilled mage!” She remembered a time when she offered her services as a way to practice, back when she was bored and feeling rebellious. Now she kept it up out of…habit? Tradition? Obligation? She couldn’t quite figure that part out, but whatever the reason, it was too late to start charging. She didn’t have much use for treasure anyway. She was about to begin another string of buzzwords when she noticed a dragon had silently taken a seat on the blanket in front of her. Her stomach dropped. Empty glowing eyes stared up at her unblinking. “What are you doing here?” Sleight blurted out. She’d only met Chalcedony twice before, and neither time was particularly enjoyable. They only ever seemed to leave the depths of the Starwood Strand to say a few ominous things before disappearing again. She’d heard they weren’t even a dragon anymore after all the exposure to magic. The way the runes on her cards pulsed in their presence only furthered that theory. “I’ve never celebrated with the guild,” they said in an almost unnaturally soft tone. “I wanted to try it.” “Hm.” “What do your cards say about this festival?” “They say I’ve got a weird forest spirit hanging around too close,” she muttered. Nevertheless, she started shuffling the deck in earnest. Chalcedony sat unbothered. “Arcane,” Sleight declared as she flipped the card. “No surprise there. Means good luck in new endeavors—great for mages. It’s blue though, which means—“ “Fortune from nature.” Sleight blinked hard in surprise. She was just going to say it meant there was some interference from the magic of the Starwood Strand. Chalcedony seemed to notice her sudden confusion. Their expression softened. They cocked their head to one side. “I apologize. I got carried away.” They tapped the card with a tiny talon (granted, everyone’s talons seemed small compared to a deck made for imperials) and continued, “I recognize this glow as a blessing from the Strand.” “Is that so?” Sleight couldn’t hide her genuine interest. “I’ve never seen it manifest in others’ magic. This is…neat!” Chalcedony leaned in, eyes glowing a new shade of bright pink. “What else do your cards say?” Sleight had to smile. Maybe this coatl wasn’t too bad after all. [/columns]

A Festival Reading
”Fortunes! Arcane answers! Learn the secrets of the universe this Starfall Celebration!”
Dragons came and went in their festival revelry, some familiar island residents and others complete strangers following the crowd. Sleight was in the middle of it all. Her deft claws shuffled and fanned and flipped her deck of cards with practiced precision. This was the only time of year she went out of her way to give readings, so she might as well put on a show.
“Get a once in a lifetime card reading from Morganite’s most skilled mage!”
She remembered a time when she offered her services as a way to practice, back when she was bored and feeling rebellious.
“I wanted to try it.”
“Hm.”
“What do your cards say about this festival?”
“They say I’ve got a weird forest spirit hanging around too close,” she muttered. Nevertheless, she started shuffling the deck in earnest.
Chalcedony sat unbothered.
“Arcane,” Sleight declared as she flipped the card. “No surprise there. Means good luck in new endeavors—great for mages. It’s blue though, which means—“
“Fortune from nature.”
Sleight blinked hard in surprise. She was just going to say it meant there was some interference from the magic of the Starwood Strand.
Chalcedony seemed to notice her sudden confusion. Their expression softened. They cocked their head to one side.
“I apologize. I got carried away.” They tapped the card with a tiny talon (granted, everyone’s talons seemed small compared to a deck made for imperials) and continued, “I recognize this glow as a blessing from the Strand.”
“Is that so?” Sleight couldn’t hide her genuine interest.
“I’ve never seen it manifest in others’ magic. This is…neat!” Chalcedony leaned in, eyes glowing a new shade of bright pink. “What else do your cards say?”
Sleight had to smile. Maybe this coatl wasn’t too bad after all.

The retrofitted cave was positioned in such a way that weather almost never found its way into the sweltering depths, making it a perfect escape from dreary days like this one. It was about that time of year when Edvard would find any excuse to go work on a project if only to warm up for an hour or two. His breath sparked and steamed a deep wine color, redder than the average Arcanite’s but still pinker and more shimmery than any Fire dragon’s. He was hardly aware of his magical output when he worked, especially not when the piece was as detailed as a new mantelpiece for the observatory. It had been his idea, of course. Those mages would never willingly try to fix up their messy tower with new artwork. They probably wouldn’t even notice if the whole ceiling came down on them as long as their telescope still worked. He smoothed out a tiny metal curl as he laughed to himself at the notion. “What’s so funny?” Edvard jumped at the sound, sending sparks flying around him. He turned to see Colorado completely unfazed by his reaction. “I didn’t hear you come in,” he said. “Am I interrupting?” Her bored tone made it seem like she didn’t really care if she was or not. “I assumed I didn’t need an invitation to visit my brother.” “No, no. You’re fine. I haven’t seen you in a while though.” He fully abandoned his project in favor of conversation. “Truthfully…“ Colorado settled herself in front of the glowing furnace. “Your workshop is the next best thing to an expedition to the Waste.” Edvard laughed and joined her. “Well I try. Styled it after the best, you know!” She looked around, thick spectacles catching the light at every angle. “Very traditional. Early to mid-draconic style. Anachronistic forge and tools though. A shame.” Edvard didn’t know how to respond. “I’m joking. It’s nice.” Even her supposed humor was dry and stilted. He couldn’t help but laugh again. “So why don’t you take me back to the Waste sometime so I can do more research and get it right?” Colorado suddenly looked…not pained, per se, but somewhere between uncomfortable and deep in thought. “I can’t simply fly off whenever I want whenever I want, Edvard. There are procedures.” “You’re the one in charge of expeditions though.” “And I’ve no reason to plan one there. My current research is in Dragonhome.” There was no changing her mind. “Then let’s go there sometime.” Her crest perked up. “You would appreciate the ancient jewelry. Based on surviving records, the earliest metalworkers…” Edvard more or less lost track of the conversation at that point. He didn’t know much about archaeology, but he liked hearing his sister get excited and say more than a few terse words at a time. Rain began to pound against the exterior walls, and the sea grew a bit rougher far below them. Not weather for blacksmithing or researching, they decided. A Monstrous Meeting
Deep beneath the island, a ragged skydancer made her way through unfamiliar caverns. Her claws, wrapped in cloth stained past the point of recovery, shook slightly as she held a dripping candle up to the chambers.
There.
A gorgeous shimmery pile sat at the far end of the room. What once must have been a hulking beast was now a bounty of new scraps for her to collect. She approached it with slow delight.
A sudden wind through the chamber gave her pause. A draft? Curiosity overtook her and she spun around to examine the room. Broken metal instruments she hadn’t noticed before littered the floor between the bones and shrouds she was used to seeing.
And blood.
Another common sight grew sinister in her mind. What kind of place had she found herself in?
The horrible low groan of a large mass shifting came from behind her. The corpse. She heard the iridescent scales she had admired clicking together as the thing moved.
She dared to turn around.
Before her stood a bogsneak-shaped thing made of layers of cloth, feathers, and scales that appeared only loosely held together by some internal force. One slimy, dead eye opened and stared down at her.
She was frozen. Was this some kind of punishment for her disturbing the dead? An omen? A new disgusting breed of dragon?
It reached one heavy talon towards her. Rags much older and dirtier than her own hung off of it like rotten flesh. Loose pieces of scales fell out from between the joints as it moved.
She didn’t wait for it to touch her. In an instant, her legs allowed her to move again and she bolted for the exit. She didn’t want to know if the thing was behind her or not. In a half-crazed state she wondered how the guild above would deal with an honest-to-gods monster terrorizing it, if it was indeed following her.
It was not following her, she realized, as she reached the entrance of the catacombs and was met with a blast of fresh air.
Good, she thought, Let the beast stay down there.
