”In the beginning, the universe was an egg.
Wrapped in the fabric of cosmos itself,
inside the most powerful and pure form of magical energy slept.
Time stood still while an eternity passed,
and the egg shell finally cracked.
The powers inside had started to grow and too small was the shell,
so it popped open and the cosmos spread out farther than anything could travel.
The energy inside the egg was too much for itself,
so into many it split.”
Religion is strongly present in the everyday life of eternalians. It shows in the form of both small details and ritualistic manners, as well as in huge ceremonial holidays that are celebrated throughout the whole city. The small details can be wearing a specific deity’s emblem in jewelry, or the simple gesture of bowing your head when leaving home. The religious symbols and carvings, as well as depictions and statues of deities are part of the architechture in Eternal, reminding it’s inhabitants of the greater powers that bless their city. Native eternalians often call the city by the name ”City of Gods”, and they tell that the blessings of gods can be seen in every aspect of the city:
Thamna, ”Mother of Soil”, has given them solid land to build on and always gives crops of plenty. She is seen as the mother of life and is told to be the most loving and caring of the deities if you treat her with respect, but also the most unforgiving if you tarnish her domain or kill her children without reason. She is seen as nature and life itself, which is why eternalians try their best to treat all life with respect and take good care of the lands and nature around them.
Mestos, ”Herder of Waves”, has given them a river that flows life into the soils of their city and all the waters on their domain bless the citizens with plentiful bounty. He is seen as the father of life and the husband of Thamna. He’s more unpredictable and temperamental than his wife, but his love towards his children is never ending. The river that runs across Eternal is always kept clean and it’s forbidden to throw any sort of trash in it.
Rhillon, ”Weaver of Weather”, has blessed them with many centuries of mostly pleasant weather. Sun gets to shine without clouds on Eternal for the most part of the year, rains are fairly rare, and the ocean breeze cools the air during the hottest days. He’s described to be a neutral god who doens’t really have a specific relation to mortal creatures and often does what he pleases. It is said that the weather is so pleasant over Eternal just because the other gods keep their eye on him and remind him to be respectful towards the mortals who worship him.
Wala and Uloqhna, ”Brothers of Sun and Moon”, shine their light on Eternal on day and night. The story of the two brothers is quite sad: Wala and Uloqhna are children of Thamna and Mestos. When the universe was young and the world was still taking it’s shape, the two borthers were inseparable and they loved each other dearly. However, when Thamna and Mestos tried to bring life on to the planet, it died quickly and the parents assigned both brothers the task of assisting them. Wala was bound to shine his light upon his mother’s creations so they could grow and live, while Uloqhna was tasked to help his father to move the waters of the world. Wala and Uloqhna were heartbroken as they knew their time together had come to an end. Uloqhna couldn’t keep the tears from flowing when he disappeared to the horizon. Those tears spread to the night sky and became stars. Wala made a promise that whenever he could, he would linger on the horizon to greet his brother and shine his warm light on him so he wouldn’t be so sad. It is said that whenever an eclipse occurs, the sun and the moon hug each other for finally having the chance to meet after a long time away from each other.
V’aarna, ”Keeper of Souls”, is the god of death, passing and rebirth, and he’s the one to collect your soul when your time is up. He’s often also called ”Fate” and ”the Harvester”. He’s a neutral god who views every living creature as equals. He doesn’t do favors to appease other gods, and you can’t buy more lifetime by worshiping him. Even thought he’s a fearsome god, eternalians view him as honest and fair because he doesn’t favor anyone. Eternalians also see him as a teacher, as they feel like the unpredictability of your lifetime is what makes it special and encourages you to enjoy and value your time alive. V’aarna is also seen as the saddest of the gods, as his position as the death god was forced upon him: Thamna and Mestos noticed they had filled the world with too many creatures, and they claimed to be so in love in the world they had ceated, that they couldn’t bear to take back a single soul they had put upon the earth. Because of this, they decided to both rip out part of their hearts, and from those pieces they created V’aarna. Unfortunately because he was created from the pieces of Thamna’s and Mestos’ hearts, he loved all life just as much as them. He also knew that the planet couldn’t sustain an endless flow of creatures, so he ignored his feelings and took his position as the Harvester. It is told that he weeps from pain and sorrow as he reaps the souls of the living, and from his tears the souls are able to flow back to the world to live a new life.
These six are the most important ones and are seen as having the biggest impact on the everyday life of eternalians. Beside these six major deities there’s many minor ones who are mostly the embodiments of different feelings and ambitions living creatures have. Minor deities are told to have born from the sparks of when Thamna let the life energy to flow from her body into the world, and when the energy took the form of souls sparks of pure divine energy flew off of them. These sparks took many shapes that would help the souls to survive and fill their lifetime with positive feelings and desires that gave the soul’s journey on earth a purpose. Some of the sparks got cold and darkened before they were able to take their shape, and from these sparks emerged the ill and negative feelings and harmful desires that would afflict mortals during their lifetime.
Eternalian priests also give recognition to the divine beings and deities of other religions and sources, as they won’t claim that their gods and godesses are the only ones to exist, but they will naturally revere their own deities above others. While they don’t deny the existence of other divine beings, they do believe that their deities and their respective duties conserning the world are accurate.
Eternalians believe that in rare occasions one of their gods and deities choose to descend from the heavens to live in a body of a mortal. This is because as immortal beings they wish to feel and experience what makes the time of a mortal so special and precious. Eternalians tell the tale that the first incarnate to walk among them was the first emperor Rhohr, who was the one to claim their land and call this domain by the name of Eternal. He was the first god who understood that because dragons were mortals, they appreaciated world and enjoyed their time on it in the way a god never could. Rhohr loved his small clan so much, that he eventually gave away his immortality to truly learn how a life of a mortal would feel, and from him the royal bloodline of emperors and empresses began.
