@Disillusionist

I'm glad it feels that way, that's the way I intended to write it! Even if they aren't physically present in everything that happens, they are the heart of the clan and their shared vision makes it what it is. I'm glad to know I succeeded in making it more than just a headcanon in my brain!

I honestly love Xinskarr so much, I'm looking forward to exploring him more! And Quartz and Banella, as stubbornly in their ways as they are. Honestly, all this came about because I was trying to figure out just where I wanted to take the Banella arc and I realized that everything from her inspiration to her aesthetic was screaming evil Disney Queen so I decided to make her the Disney Villain she has always been destined to be.

India promised more answers in the morning, and left the two of them alone with their food. "What was that all about?" Eclipse asked in a low voice. "I honestly have no idea, but something is really wrong." Rori shrugged. "Hey, they still have my old stuff here! It's packed away, but it's sweet that India kept it." An awkward silence stretched between the two dragons. Neither had really spent any significant amount of time together. "So tell me, what do you do here?" Eclipse asked. "What is your role in the clan?" "Well, mostly I sing here in the tavern during the evenings, but I also pull shifts throughout the day to earn my room and board. I'm not yet big enough to earn my keep by singing alone, but hopefully someday." Rori explained. "Wow. So they just let you do anything here?" Eclipse asked, remembering the strict laws and procedures that had to be followed in her clan. "Yeah, as long as it doesn't hurt anyone else." Rori frowned. "I don't know about now though, did anything seem a little off to you?" "I mean, I don't know your clan, and I just escaped from a clan who wanted to murder me for following my dreams, your clan so far seems like a paradise to me." Eclipse admitted. "Something's wrong." Rori confirmed, still frowning. "I can feel it, in my very essence. Something feels off. Something's changed." "Well, I'll have to take your word for it." Eclipse shrugged. "Kipling did tell me he needed my help when he rescued me. It's one of the reasons I came." "Yes! Sullene said he needed to find you to save us!" Rori grew excited again. "We just need to find out what's going on, formulate a plan, and you can use your moon warrior skills to save the clan!" Eclipse suddenly felt her heart drop. "I-" She swallowed. "I don't have my sword. A moon warrior is not a moon warrior without a lunar blade. I don't know how much I can help. But-" She felt her resolve stiffen within her. "Kipling saved my life, and I owe it to him to help in whatever way I can. I'm on your side." Rori nodded, her grin returning. "Great. Tomorrow, after we talk to India, let's see what Luster has found out and see if we can find out where Nymph took Kipling." The large imperial suddenly let out a large yawn. "But first- sleep. I feel like I could hibernate forever!" "You can say that again!" Eclipse smiled, and settled down on one of the beds. She felt a strange warmth flow through her as she drifted off. Was this what it felt like having a friend? She'd never exactly had a friend before. Her clan had been too rigid to allow for such casual relations. It was nice to be cared for, to be a part of something important. Shortly after Kipling had been bustled away by Nymph, Rori and Eclipse were quickly escorted to Rori's old room, out of the eye of the public, given food and told to rest. India promised more answers in the morning, and left the two of them alone with their food.

"What was that all about?" Eclipse asked in a low voice.

"I honestly have no idea, but something is really wrong." Rori shrugged. "Hey, they still have my old stuff here! It's packed away, but it's sweet that India kept it."

An awkward silence stretched between the two dragons. Neither had really spent any significant amount of time together.

"So tell me, what do you do here?" Eclipse asked. "What is your role in the clan?"

"Well, mostly I sing here in the tavern during the evenings, but I also pull shifts throughout the day to earn my room and board. I'm not yet big enough to earn my keep by singing alone, but hopefully someday." Rori explained.

@Petall I really like how Eclipse is struggling to deal with this new and amazing clan. As if the time skip weren't big enough, she also has to deal with a completely new and liberated environment. It's good to know that her attitude is more "Gosh, I hope I can help out!" instead of "Hehe, time to take advantage of them!" And I agree with Rori, something's weird. Something to do with the meddled-with timeline, maybe? [emoji=tundra scared]

It was surprisingly early for the clan to settle down for the night, as usually the clan services were open well into the night for the sake of tourists, the vendors usually taking longer breaks earlier in the day. But by the time the sun set, everyone had retreated to their quarters. Well, almost everyone. Luster had seen strange dragons wandering in the gathering darkness, thin and gangly. They sent shivers down his spine, and Luster too had quickly turned in for the night. Now that the sun was up, however, the clan was as active as usual. Tourists bustled around from stall to stall, and the dragons of Windkeep Tower had once again set to work. Now was his chance. Licking his forepaw and slicking it over his filigree, trying to shine it without dislodging it, he made his way up to Cattail's stand. "Hey." Luster raised his eyebrows, trying to flash her his most charming smile. To his dismay, the grumpy look on her face further stretched into an angry grimace. "What? You aren't even going to say hello to your boyfriend?" Luster tried again. "Get out." Cattail growled. "Babe, what did I do?" Luster grinned sheepishly. "Sure, I disappeared for what, a year? But that was a mistake. It's a long story, but if you give me a chance I can explain-" Great. Now he was gibbering. He was supposed to be getting information, not trying to win back his girlfriend. "You aren't welcome around here." Cattail snapped, turning away. "A bounty has been but on your head. Kipling and his friends. I've got enough trouble of my own without mixing with dragons like you." Luster felt her words like a blow to the gut, but he tried to stay strong. "What? Friends? I haven't seen Kipling for like a year!" It wasn't exactly a lie. "Please, I've been gone a while. I got myself into a bit of trouble. Can't you at least explain what's going on? Can't you give me another chance?" Cattail sighed. "You are an idiot, you know that? I can see your friend over there, she isn't exactly doing a good job of hiding." She gestured to a table that Rori was squeezed under, quite indiscreetly. She grinned sheepishly at Luster and waved. Luster rolled his eyes and waved back, catching sight of Simon out of the corner of his eye. He was going to be in trouble. "Look. Please. I was lying about still being friends with Rori and Kipling but I still don't know what the heck is going on here." Luster begged. "I need your help, and then you never have to speak to me again, I promise." Cattail sighed. "Things are different here in Windkeep Tower now. Our new rulers, they have different standards. If you want to keep your livelihood, you have to abide by their rules. It's now every dragon for themselves. You can't trust nobody. Many dragons have proved to be not who we thought hey were." "What do you mean?" Luster asked. "Look, bud, as much as I wish I could stand here talking to you, if you value the skin of you and your friends, you have to get moving, otherwise your toast." Cattail urged. "And that's the last piece of info I've got for you." Luster turned to see where she was pointing and saw Simon eyeing him suspiciously. That was when Luster realized there was something off with the imperial sheriff. He was much skinnier, his mane wilder, and his eyes sharper. He eyed Luster like a vulture, and that's when Luster realized it wasn't Simon, but instead an imperial that looked somewhat similar. His face was narrower, and his body was painted with a skeletal outline. There was something off about the dragon in the way that he moved. Cattail hadn't been kidding. He had to get he and Rori out of here. I told her she probably wasn't fully grown yet, but the image was so funny that I promised to redo the scene once Rori reached her full size. Chapter 113: Hey Babe!

Unfortunately, by the time Luster had made his way down to the marketplace, all the vendors had closed up shop.

@Petall Ooh, it's getting both creepy and juicy! That scene with Rori trying to hide under the table was amazing. xDD I really liked that bit with "Simon", though. At first I was all, "Yay, Simon's still here! He can help out!" Then like Luster, I realized, "Wait, that's...not Simon?" and then "Ohhh nooooo." Thank goodness Kipling at least found his way to friends.

At first, the fae was disoriented by his dark surroundings. Was he still in the Tangled Wood? As he came to his senses, he remembered his return home and his heart sank. The fun was over, it was time to wise up. The knock sounded again. "Coming!" Kipling said, shaking his head to wake himself up and zipping to the door. Outside, Simon was standing. I'm sorry, did I wake you?" Simon asked. "No! No!" Kipling said. "I was awake, I was just distracted." He paused, fluttering up to sit on the imperial's antlers. Simon started walking down the tunnels, letting his lantern light their path. "What are you doing here?" "The leader of the rebellion wants to see you." Simon said. "I volunteered to be your escort." "I mean what are you doing down here, hiding out?" Kipling asked. "Quartz and I have a difficult past." Simon admitted. "He wanted something my original clan had. When I tried to stand up to him, he imprisoned me and killed the rest of my clan. I managed to escape his bonds in the last battle, and he wasn't entirely pleased to see me again when he returned to Windkeep Tower. I wasn't about to just stand by and let him destroy another clan, so I've gone into hiding with the rest of the dragons who want to help but aren't exactly welcome or safe in Windkeep Tower." "I'm sorry." Kipling said, growing solomn. "It's okay kid, it's the way of the world sometimes. We can't stop bad things from happening, but that doesn't mean we have to accept them." Simon said. "We can't change the past, but we can fight for the future." "How many dragons are living here underground?" Kipling asked. "Not too many." Simon said. "Querida and I are here, as are Winterstone, Wayuin and their song, Xinskarr. Sacredscream has also retreated here. Basically, those of us who have a troubled history with Quartz or have the level of dedication to Fenn and Elric our new rulers would see as a threat. Nymph is also on our side, but she can't do too much without revealing her position, Quartz and Banella don't exactly trust her." "Who is the leader of the rebellion?" Kipling asked as they turned into a larger chamber. The ceiling of the cave was high and the walls were carved and painted with intricate runes and images. Animal pelts lay on the ground, creating soft areas to rest. This must have been were Sullene lived, before she left. "I am." A voice sounded, and out of a dark corner of the cave, Winterstone emerged. "Welcome Kipling, I'm glad to see you are safe and sound. We hoped that you would one day return to help our cause." Winterstone grinned. Kipling grinned back, unsure of what to say. Winterstone had always been reclusive, so Kipling hadn't spent all that much time with her, and he couldn't help but feel awkward in her presence. Winterstone seemed to be waiting for a response, so Kipling said a quiet "Thank you." "Tell me about your travels! Where have you been?" Winterstone asked, her dark eyes gleaming with interest." With that, Kipling spilled out the full story, explaining everything from Sullene's first appearances to traveling back in time to save Eclipse, and ending with his strange late return. All while he was explaining this, Winterstone didn't interrupt him once, just listened patiently to his story, nodding occasionally. "You've been through quite the ordeal." Winterstone said once he had finished speaking. Kipling nodded, his throat too dry to say anything else. "I'm afraid it's far from over. Windkeep Tower is in need of great help." She sighed, handing Kipling a flask of water. "What do you mean?" Kipling asked, after taking a big gulp of water. "Everyone loves my parents! Surely they outnumber Quartz and Banella!" "If only that were true." Winterstone smiled sadly. "Fenn and Elric have a lot of support, for sure, but Windkeep Tower is not as unified as it once was. The disappearance of your parents has shaken everyone. Then, in swoop Quartz and Banella, claiming to be the saviors that will stabilize the clan once more. It started small at first, and then the army came. It appears they roped in Kaladin to raise an undead army. Now, anyone who wants to oppose them has to go through that terrifying army." Kipling didn't know what to say, things were much worse than he thought. "So, not only are the dragons of Windkeep Tower now held down with fear tactics, they now no longer know who to trust." Winterstone continued. "Many dragons have been turned over to their side, or appear to be in support. Rubywing and Rhowen have returned in support of Quartz, the circus dragons have turned or been manipulated into using their powers and abilities to support the army. Magiere has been placed in charge of the army, not that anyone really trusted her all that much before. Who knows how many more truly support them, it's not exactly a safe environment to say otherwise. And we obviously can't reveal ourselves for those who want to join the fight without alerting Quartz and Banella." Kipling drooped. If everything was so big, what could one band of rebels do against them? "But there is still hope." Winterstone added, seeing Kipling's loss of heart. "There is always hope, as long as there are dragons to fight for it. It's going to be a long hard battle, but if we can recruit others to our side, if we grow in ranks and abilities, if we find the weak points, if Fenn and Elric are not truly dead as everyone fears and they return, then we stand a chance." It was a lot of ifs, but if there was even a glimmer of hope, Kipling was going to grab onto it. "I'll do everything I can to help." He vowed. "And so will my friends. Rori, Luster and Eclipse are on our side." Winterstone smiled. "I'm glad to hear it." "I just have one question." Kipling said. "Why you? Why are you fighting so hard for this?" "Because Quartz has taken everything from me already, and I'm not going to let him take anything more from me or anyone else." Winterstone said, eyes hardening. "It was him who killed Xinskarr's siblings, wasn't it." Kipling asked quietly. "Not directly, but yes, it was him who ordered it." Winterstone admitted, her gaze softening and growing sad. "I once worked as a spy and assassin, and he hired me to spy on a royal family and do away with their heir. To be fair, they were a corrupt nobility, and at the time, Quartz was trying to turn over a new leaf. Unfortunately, I fell for the very dragon I was supposed to kill. A classic blunder, one I thought I would be immune to. Well, Quartz found out, and he wasn't happy. On the night before we were to marry, he killed my fiance. That was the moment he turned. I think he was angry at all of his attempts to do good going south." "I'm sorry." Kipling said. "I got managed to get him back. I made a deal with Vaughan and got my Wayuin back. Of course, he came as a hatchling, without all his memories. Regaining them has been a process. But nonetheless, Quartz was furious to hear I had regained what he had taken from me, and he decided killing our children was ample punishment." Winterstone sighed. "Really, I have no one to blame but myself. I was selfish. And that's why I need to do this now. I need to right my wrongs, and make sure no one is hurt by them." "Does Xinskarr know?" Kipling asked. "Yes, and I'm worried for him." Winterstone sighed. "He wants nothing more than to gains revenge for his siblings deaths. It's consuming every facet of his being. I'm all for Quartz getting what he deserves, but too much anger and hate will only lead to destruction." "Thank you for trusting me enough to share this." Kipling said, feeling honored at how much Winterstone was willing to share with him. "Now, what can I do?" "Unfortunately, it's best if you stay out of sight and out of mind until we actually launch our attack, but if you can get in contact with your friends, it would be great to have some sources on the outside." Kipling nodded. "I can do that." "Thank you Kipling. Together, we can overthrow these tyrants and bring peace to the clan again." ----- Next ----- @CleverDual @Alwaid @zzzhorses @Amezrou @ScrivenerRook @Kizzan @clarax @lilastar @tigressRising @Disillusionist @Aetherstorm @rainphee @RiaFire11 @Tirtouga678 @catmeow1 @ShinyDecidueye @AlchemyFox ----- This chapter ended up being more of an infodump, but I wanted to make sure you all had the information you needed and Kipling needed to be caught up to speed anyways.

Chapter 114: The Resistence

Kipling was awaken by a knock on his door.

"What are you doing here?"

"The leader of the rebellion wants to see you." Simon said. "I volunteered to be your escort."

"I mean what are you doing down here, hiding out?" Kipling asked.

I wasn't about to just stand by and let him destroy another clan, so I've gone into hiding with the rest of the dragons who want to help but aren't exactly welcome or safe in Windkeep Tower."

"I'm sorry." Kipling said, growing solomn.

"It's okay kid, it's the way of the world sometimes. We can't stop bad things from happening, but that doesn't mean we have to accept them." Simon said. "We can't change the past, but we can fight for the future."

"How many dragons are living here underground?" Kipling asked.

Nymph is also on our side, but she can't do too much without revealing her position, Quartz and Banella don't exactly trust her."

"Who is the leader of the rebellion?" Kipling asked as they turned into a larger chamber.

Winterstone seemed to be waiting for a response, so Kipling said a quiet "Thank you."

"Tell me about your travels! Where have you been?" Winterstone asked, her dark eyes gleaming with interest."

With that, Kipling spilled out the full story, explaining everything from Sullene's first appearances to traveling back in time to save Eclipse, and ending with his strange late return.

Surely they outnumber Quartz and Banella!"

"If only that were true." Winterstone smiled sadly. Now, anyone who wants to oppose them has to go through that terrifying army."

Kipling didn't know what to say, things were much worse than he thought.

And we obviously can't reveal ourselves for those who want to join the fight without alerting Quartz and Banella."

Kipling drooped. If everything was so big, what could one band of rebels do against them?

"But there is still hope." Winterstone added, seeing Kipling's loss of heart. "There is always hope, as long as there are dragons to fight for it. It's going to be a long hard battle, but if we can recruit others to our side, if we grow in ranks and abilities, if we find the weak points, if Fenn and Elric are not truly dead as everyone fears and they return, then we stand a chance."

It was a lot of ifs, but if there was even a glimmer of hope, Kipling was going to grab onto it. "I'll do everything I can to help." He vowed. "And so will my friends. Rori, Luster and Eclipse are on our side."

@Petall
Oh, heavy exposition is fine. I will admit to knowing a bit of this (reading the companion-piece dragon bios), but Kipling can't log into Flight Rising and look this stuff up~ That would be a little too meta. Also, True-Simon is safe! I was worried since the last chapter.

@Petall Oooohh, Winterstone is so pretty!! :o Sometimes I forget how lovely older genes can be. She pulls IriShimCrackle off so well!!

And infodumps are always great! *sits on own ridiculously long lore* Seriously, the situation sounds a wee bit complicated, so I think it's better for everything to be laid out in one update as opposed to having the information get fed piecemeal over the course of several different updates. This way is more efficient, and we readers (and characters!) won't be going in confused and disoriented. (I mean, the time skip was crazy enough as it was for Kipling and co. xD)

I was also surprised to see that Rubywing and Rhowen had returned to support Quartz. (Old allegiances die hard, I guess??) Magiere, yeah, that's no surprise at all, especially since she and Banella sort of became pals last time. Kaladin, yeah, I knew there was a reason I didn't like that guy. xDD
