Banella slipped into the Copper Lotus, feeling slightly uncomfortable. She half expected everyone to be staring at her. For all her years in Windkeep Tower, this was the first time she had made an ordinary appearance in the light of day, and certainly the first time she had been in a location as open and casual as a tavern.
She was surprised by how good it felt to be back in Windkeep Tower, though it could just be the distance from Novus Lux. She no longer felt the loathing of her sister's clan, that had long disappeared after the ritual, but the empty agony of the loss of what could have been was too much to bear. It was time to forge her own path, and this was the first step.
She scanned the tavern, hoping the dragon she sought was here. That was when she saw her, hunched over the counter and stirring a drink with her talon, looking absolutely miserable. Banella pulled a small bottle out of her cloak, a trinket skillfully lifted from Kai's tent. She uncorked it and inhaled the fumes, hoping this would work. With purpose, Banella strode over to the wildclaw and sat in the seat beside her.

"What do you want?" Magiere grunted.
"I'm sorry you didn't find Legba." Banella said, for the first time understanding the wildclaw that had been such a pain to her before.
"What do you care, princess?" Magiere sighed.
Banella flinched at the name, but didn't let herself react. "What are you going to do now?"
"Crawl back to Lin I suppose. He was right, I obviously can't control my magic." Magiere sighed. "Not after what happened in Novus Lux."
Banella grinned. It was working. "Why should you crawl back to someone who makes you feel like dirt?" She suggested. "What would you say if I told you there was another way you could learn your magic, one that doesn't require you to limit your power."
"Why are you offering me this?" Magiere grunted.
"Because you and I have a lot more in common then either of us would care to admit, and I think it's time we put our differences aside and started working together. We can build something no one will take away from us."
Magiere eyed Banella dubiously. "And how do you propose that? I won't have to work in the stupid theatre of yours will I?"
Banella laughed. "No, of course not. But you are going to need a flair for the dramatic." She paused, waiting for Magiere to respond. The wildclaw stared into her half-finished drink, saying nothing. "So what do you say, are you in?"
"Sure, why the heck not?" Magiere said, downing the rest of her drink and setting it down with a determined clunk. She turned to Banella. "Where do we start?"

"You're back!" Thornspine exclaimed as Tosha stepped into the door. He immediately dropped the broom he had been using and raced over to hug her. After arriving late last night, she had opted to spend a night at the Copper Lotus rather than face Thornspine. The closer she had gotten to Windkeep Tower, the more anxious she had felt. How could she ever break the news? Eventually, she had decided there was no putting it off any longer.
"Thorn! How are you?" Tosha asked cheerfully, trying to ignore the way her heart was pounding in her chest. She was almost certain Thornspine could hear it.
"Fine, fine! It's the same old here. How are you?" Thorn asked.
"Good!" Tosha had never seen him so excited. He must have really missed her. This was going to make this all the harder.
"Well, tell me about it? Was Banella impossible? Was Novus Lux beautiful? Oh, where are my manners you must be exhausted! Come, I can put on some tea! I want to hear all about it!"
"What about your cleaning?" Tosha asked, gesturing to the broom on the floor. Thorn never left a job unfinished.
"It can wait, the theatre won't fall apart if it misses a day of sweeping." Thorn waved it off. "I'm sure Banella will just think it adds to the aesthetic."
As Thorn led her down to his quarters, humming happily, Tosha felt her heart sink lower and lower. By the time they reached the small nook, she had lost her nerve entirely. Surely she didn't have to tell him right away? That conversation could take place another time, once she had put more thought into what she was saying. For now, she just wanted to enjoy spending time with her friend again.

In case you're wondering what Banella used from the bottle, it was a dash of honesty, to ensure she could get Magiere to open up.
Banella slipped into the Copper Lotus, feeling slightly uncomfortable. She half expected everyone to be staring at her. @Petall Ooh, it just gets better and better. I wasn't expecting Banella to approach Magiere with an alliance offer, or for Tosha to not break the news to Thorn right away. A pretty surprising update overall! :o

Banella lounged across a large ornate couch, resting her chin on the arm and letting out another deep sigh. She was bored. She itched to go and do something new, expand her horizons, but she hardly knew where to start. She had found a friend in Magiere, but that hadn’t helped. She needed something more. The only question was: what more did she need?
Unable to sit still any longer, Banella got to her feet and began to pace her quarters, taking care to avoid the occasionally dusty patches of sunlight streaming through half-opened curtains. She was no longer content with her life here, everything seemed stagnant.
Maybe I need to let go of more in order to move on. Banella thought to herself. Letting go of her sister had done wonders. Maybe there was something else holding her back from fulfilling her ultimate destiny. Something that belonged in the past.
That was when the idea struck her, like the bolts of inspiration that fed her plays. This spark was different however, it was far more practical. Following the route of habit, she raced to her desk and pulled out a quill. She slid open the drawer and fingered through the thick stack of parchment Thornspine had stocked in her absence. Rather than removing the whole stack, however, she pulled out three pieces and, after dusting off a space on the dark-wooded surface, placed them down on the desk. She unscrewed her ink bottle and began to write…

The timing was never right. Tosha had tried to tell Thornspine about her amazing opportunity at Novus Lux, but whenever they were together the words died in her throat. He was too busy with his work, or otherwise she didn’t want to disrupt one of the few breaks he took. A month had passed since she had returned home and she was beginning to realize it was all excuses.
Today was the day. Today she was going to do it. She was going to tell him, even if it broke his heart—and hers. She just hoped he would understand. She couldn’t get stuck here, unless she’d become as shriveled and bitter as Banella. She had seen how that turned out for the wildclaw, and she refused to get hung up in that way, not when she knew joy was out there.

“Hey, Thorn, we need to talk.” Tosha said, stepping into her room and finding him within. He was staring wide-eyed at something on her bed.
“What was that?” Thornspine asked, head shooting up to meet her gaze. His pale green eyes were wide with surprise. “Sorry, I didn’t mean to intrude, I just got a strange letter from Banella and when I went to ask her about it, she didn’t respond. Her letter told me to find you and when I got here you weren’t here and there’s-“ He trailed off, wordlessly shaking his head. He drew her attention to a deep purple envelope on her bed, lettered in gold ink.
Forgetting everything she had been going to say, she dove for the letter and cracked it open. Inside was a thick piece of parchment covered in tiny handwriting. Tosha had to squint and hold it closer to the candlelight in order to read it.
Tosha,
I must give you the highest thanks and regard for your assistance in escorting me to the fair burg of Novus Lux. I am well aware that the journey was taxing and I do not blame you for any resentment you may exude in my direction.
“Banella’s thanking me?” Tosha asked, rereading the first lines again to make sure she wasn’t imagining things.
“Something’s gotten into her, I’m telling you.” Thornspine exclaimed. “I’ve never gotten anything like this from her! Keep reading!”
Tosha returned to the letter, taking in every word of the long-winded and dramatic volume. It wasn’t until the last line that the purpose of the letter was revealed.
And that is why I am bequeathing upon you my theatre. My idle hands and mind have grown bored with the arts and I wish to expand my breadth to greater ambitions. You are of pure heart and spirit, and I could think of no one better suited to maintain the integrity of such a noble art.
Sincerely,
Banella
“What?!” Tosha dropped the letter in shock, stepping back. Her mind was racing a mile and minute. First of all, Banella appreciated her and thought she was ‘pure of heart and spirit’ and the best option for running a theatre? Second of all, Banella was giving her the theatre? She had almost no experience! She hardly knew where to start!
“What is it?” Thorn asked.
Tosha pointed to the letter on the floor, unable to find the words to explain what had just taken place. Thorn rushed to pick it up and read it over, eyes growing wider and wider with each word. When he had finished he handed it to her.
“I knew she was giving up the theatre, but she didn’t tell me she was giving it to you! That’s a high compliment!” Thorn said.
“I’m honored, I really am, but I don’t even know where to start!” Tosha exclaimed.
“Hey, you’re not in this alone, okay?” Thorn reassured her. “You’ve got me, and it may take Rose and my parents some time to come around, but once they do they’ll be happy to help in any way. Their loyalty lies more to the art of performing than to Banella. And what about those friends of yours, Kaleb and Triannya? You could write to them, they seem to know what they are doing.”
Tosha nodded, taking in a deep breath. The theatre was hers. She could do this. She was actually achieving her dream, just a little differently than she thought. It would take work and time, yes, but she could do this. She would get there. Her work with Banella had actually paid off.
She couldn’t help it. She let out a squeal of excitement.

There's a connection between today's chapter title and yesterday's. have any of you figured it out?

@Petall Ooh, it looks like the whole "greatest passion" thing was resolved more easily than I'd thought. Now that's a happy ending! (Though I am a bit concerned about what Banella and Magiere are going to do now. It's still a somewhat unstable combination. xD)

Yup! Now that she's given up her heart for a theatre, she is ready to pursue other things... It's interesting how small moments can change the course of history, or in this case the direction of an entire character arc.

“Kaleb and Triannya are here!” Thornspine announced, bursting through the door to Tosha’s dressing room.
“Oh thank goodness!” Tosha exclaimed, looking up. She was all too happy when she saw the familiar faces of her imperial friends. It was hard to believe it had been a year since they had last seen each other back in Novus Lux.

“Tosha, how are you doing?” Kaleb asked.
“The place looks great!” Triannya exclaimed, gesturing to the snowy decorations Tosha has strung up for the Crystalline Gala. She had timed the opening of the Lux Theatre with the first night of the new year.
“I couldn’t have done it without your help, really.” Tosha sighed. “I can’t thank you enough.”
“Really, we didn’t do all that much. We’re just happy to see you’ve found your place.” Kaleb said.
“It means so much that you’re here for this.” Tosha smiled.
“We wouldn’t miss it for anything!” Triannya promised. “Now, how long until the start of the show?”
“Three hours.” Tosha breathed, feeling the stress wash over her again.
“Well, what are we doing standing around? We’ve got work to do!” Triannya responded.

The first performance of The Winterberry Queen had gone far better than Tosha ever could have imagined. The audience was packed with both dragons from Windkeep Tower and Novus Lux. The theatre looked so much better after it had been remodeled to let more light in. The atmosphere was far more lively, and it seemed to draw dragons in rather than turn them away.
Tosha couldn’t decide what the best part of the night was: finally being on stage performing, seeing the joy on everyone’s faces throughout the night, or when Aida, Aewyn and Lyrica surprised her after the show.
After the performance, actors and audience alike streamed into the Copper Lotus. The tavern had never been so full. Thornspine soon sprang into action to help the tavern staff serve everyone, popping back to Tosha’s table whenever he had a gap. Tosha had tried to join him, but he insisted she stay put and celebrate her special night.
“He’s something special.” Triannya commented after the exchange.
“He really is.” Tosha agreed, watching him dart from table to table, cheerfully chatting with everyone and making sure they were comfortable.
“Do you think-“ Triannya trailed off with raised eyebrows and a knowing smile as she noticed her friend getting flustered.
“I don’t know about any of that.” Tosha bumbled, feeling her face grow warm. “He’s just a good friend.”
“Just a good friend?” Triannya pushed. Tosha couldn’t answer. She was all too happy when Aida jumped in and changed the topic.
The evening stretched on well into the early morning hours, until a tired India began shooing dragons out of the tavern so she could close up for the night. After saying goodnight to her friends, she and Thornspine made their way back to the theatre together. It really had been the perfect day. She couldn't wait to see what this next season of life held. She had a job she loved, and good friends by her side. What more could she ever want?

Banella did not look out her window at the sounds of joy coming from the theatre-goers, nor did she feel any emotion at Tosha’s success. She had moved onto far bigger things now.
Suddenly, there was the sound of the mail bell, and Banella raced to see what had arrived. There were a few unimportant ads from theatre subscriptions she had not yet cancelled and a fancy looking envelop. Smiling, she dropped the ads into the fire and turned the thick envelop over in her hand, admiring the smooth paper and the delicate pink handwriting. This is what she had been waiting for.
As she pulled out the letter and began to read the swooping pink font, her smile grew wider and she felt life course through her veins again. This was what she had been waiting for. For once in her life, she was finally getting what she wanted.

And this here marks the end of this arc! I'm glad I managed to wrap it up during the Crystalline Gala, I got a bit worried when homework and a cold kept me from writing!
I hope you enjoyed this arc! it may take some time to figure out exactly what I am doing for my next one. In the meantime, here is the usual poll about who's backstory you want to see inbetween arcs!
Tosha couldn’t decide what the best part of the night was: finally being on stage performing, seeing the joy on everyone’s faces throughout the night, or when Aida, Aewyn and ****** surprised her after the show.
