Chapter 71: Sugar and Spice
"You got the message from the Arcane ambassador about the Starfall Celebration?" Rhowen asked.
"Yes, and I told him we would be happy to showcase some of their talents. Who knows, perhaps some dragons will want to learn some magic while they're in town, they did say they'd be more than happy to teach anyone who wants to learn." Rubywing confirmed.
"Fantastic." Rhowen flicked his tongue happily. "Hey Ruby-" He began to hum in coatl.
"Yes Rhowen?" Ruby said, not looking up from her work.
"What do you say we close up shop early and go out for a nice dinner, just to spend some time together?" Rhowen asked. "You deserve it, after everything you've done to get the embassy up and running."
"I think I'd like that." Ruby said with a grin. "I think I'm just about done here anyways."
"Perfect. If you want to go get ready, how about we leave at 5." Rhowen grinned, his eyes warm as he watched Ruby turn to file the last documents. Sunlight streamed through the embassy windows, giving an amber glow to her auburn feathers. He couldn't help but think about how lucky he was to have her.
Mates. It was strange for Rubywing to think of Rhowen in that way, but it wasn't bad, just new. New like so many things had been since she began building her own life. It wouldn't be long until something else new came along, much sooner than either of them had anticipated.
"Rhowen? Can I talk to you?" Ruby asked, tentatively approaching her mate. She knew she shouldn't be nervous, but how could she not be? She hadn't been expecting this, not so soon.
"Yes, of course!" Rhowen said. "Sorry Elric, will you excuse me?"
The large purple guardian dipped his head and left the embassy, leaving the two coatls on their own.
"I hope I wasn'y interrupting anything important-" Ruby said, fidgeting a bit.
"Don't worry about it, Elric was just checking in with some defense protocols we had decided on." Rhowen explained. "Is everything okay? You look a little anxious-"
Ruby tried to find the words. "There's something I need to show you." She turned and led her mate down the corridor to their office. She closed the door, and lifted a silk blanket resting on the sofa. Nestled on the cushions were four eggs. She looked at Rhowen, trying to gauge his expression. He was always so difficult to read.
"These are-" He trailed off, at a loss for words for once.
"Ours." Ruby confirmed. She felt her heart pound in her chest. She didn't know how to be a mother, her upbringing had hardly been conventional and Quartz had hardly been a good parental example.
"This is wonderful!" Rhowen exclaimed. "A bit unexpected, yes, but Ruby, I never expected I would get to be a father, I never expected I'd feel safe enough to. This is a testament to what we've built here."
"You really think so?" Ruby asked. "You don't think they'd be better off with Amberlyn or Querida or Oriel or someone?"
"Ruby, you are going to be a fantastic mother, I just know it. You've learned from your father's mistakes, as have I." Rhowen pointed out. "Ruby, they'll be safe here, and they'll be loved. When it boils down to it, that's all hatchlings really need. The rest will come with time."
One warm evening, the eggs began to hatch. It had been Rhowen who noticed the preliminary cracks, and he called Ruby in, pulling her away from a discussion with a visitor from a nearby wind clan.
"What is it?" Ruby asked. "Is everything alright?"
"It's time." Was all he needed to say and Ruby had already taken off to their office.
The pair watched, awe-struck, as the eggs moved and the cracks grew larger. One by one, four coatls tumbled out of the eggs, eyes closed and still dripping egg-goo.
"How are we going to do this, Rhowen?" Ruby breathed. "They are so beautiful, I don't want to bring any harm to them."
"You won't." Rhowen promised. "And remember, we're doing this together."
"Together." Ruby nodded, and she scooped up one of her hatchlings and began to rub the egg-goo off of his body. The tiny coatl mewled and snuggled closer to her, and Ruby felt as though her heart was going to burst. She just hoped she wouldn't mess this up.
So yeah, I've started school again so the updates may not be as frequent anymore. I LOVE my writing class, it's entirely based on Pixar! We get to watch movies in class! It's awesome!
I am super excited about the arrival of Ruby and Rhowen babies (Finally! I've been waiting for this for months, ever since Ruby was first RTB) I'll be keeping the second one, Sugar (he's why I named this chapter Sugar and Spice) and the first girl has found a home, but if any of you want either of the last two, I'd be happy to give them to you for free! Actually, I've been meaning to say for a while, I have a thread where I give away Windkeep Tower hatchlings for free, with the option of lore and/or moodboards if you so desire.
Here's the link if that is something you are interested in! All the pairs I post hatchlings from are canon pairs, even if I haven't had the chance to write them in my lorebook.
Also, you may have noticed my new dividers! I commissioned some graphics for this thread from
the shop of CupcakeCass. I now have a banner and headers and a button! If you are interested in putting the button anywhere, here is the code and it's already in my signature.
