Chapter 57: An Unexpected Companion
The fire had worried Tess. Thankfully she had left before it started, but the smoke had risen in the sky, drawing attention for the first time to where the invisible mansion was hidden. She could only hope that Ruby and Rhowen had gotten out safely. She had made a brief search for them in Windkeep Tower to ensure they were safe, but either they were as good at hiding as Rhowen had promised or- Tess dreaded to think.
Regardless, she could not let anything distract her from her own quest for Querida. If anyone could beat Quartz, it would be his equal. After realizing she would be wasting time if she kept searching Windkeep Tower, she began her journey. Currently, she was climbing the Reedcleft Ascent towards the Scarred Wasteland. She didn't know where to go, but she had to start somewhere.
With great effort, Tess hoisted herself up the edge from the narrow path along the spiring piece of land to the flat surface. That was when she caught sight of the wildclaw making a fire on the cliffside. He looked ghastly. Tess could not smell any illness on him, but he had clearly overcome some great plague. His body was covered in boils and other scars.
The wildclaw looked up, then a look of surprise flooded his face as he caught sight of Tess. He grabbed his fire-poker stick from beside him and held it aloft warily, as if unsure whether Tess was a threat or not.
"Relax, wildclaw. You can put down your weapon. I mean no harm, I am simply passing through." Tess reassured him. "May I warm myself by your fire for the night?"
"I don't see why not, if you mean me no harm." The wildclaw shrugged. As he spoke, a faint green fog left his mouth. "Sorry for my hesitation, I have just come from the Scarred Wasteland where survival is guaranteed to no one. It's hard to lose my guard now that I am back home."
"Yes, I see in your eyes that you hail from the Windswept Plateau." Tess said with a purr. "What is your name?"
"Pennar." The dragon responded.
"I am Tess." The manticore responded with a nod.
"Would you like some food? I was about to cook the birds I caught, I have more than enough to share." Pennar offered.
"You are too kind. It appears that the spirit of wind has not left you." Tess noted.
"I sure hope so! I have been gone so long. I was traveling with my sister and we crashed in the Wyrmwound. I accidentally touched the vile stuff within and I'm lucky to be alive." Pennar admitted. "I actually just live right down there, in the tower at the edge of the sea."
"Windkeep Tower?" Tess asked. "Now I see why you are so hospitable."
"You know it?" Pennar asked, surprised. "Tell me, while you were there, did you meet anyone named Palla? She's my sister and we got seperated when I fell ill."
"Palla... no, though the name does sound familiar." Tess admitted.
"No, I would think not... Palla never found the tower as much of a home as I did." Pennar sighed. "What about Oriel? or Amberlyn? Oriel's my mother, and-"
"Oriel?" Tess interrupted beginning to get excited. "Yes, she's there. Hold on, if you are Oriel's kid, you must be Querida's uncle!"
"Querida?" Pennar asked, confused. "Do you know Palla then?"
"No, I never met her. Only-" Tess paused, and suddenly stories she had heard came back to her, snippets of things Querida had said about her family and things she had overheard when checking up on Rammus from a distance. "Oh, I am such a fool! Plagueheart wasn't always her name, was it? Oriel does not seem the type to name her daughter such a name."
"I-I don't know what you're talking about." Pennar said, stammering. "Plagueheart? Who is Plagueheart?"
"From what I've heard, now that it's all coming back to me, Querida's mother changed her name after the death of her brother only... you're not dead." Tess said. "But oh, Pennar I am so sorry, you sister is in terrible danger. She was caught robbing a mansion and was taken prisoner by a rich coatl named Quartz. Her daughter Querida only just managed to escape! Only Querida ended up joining up with Quartz and later he got angry with her and imprisoned her too. I don't know if they are in the same prison or not, but I'm journeying to find and rescue Querida so that she may return home."
"What do you know about these prisons?" Pennar asked, worry etched on his scarred face.
"Not much, only Querida was transported there by magic. Quartz's magic is powerful, so I could imagine he could transport her quite far." Tess sighed. "It is beginning to feel like a hopeless quest, but I must try something. Querida is my partnered dragon and now that I've kept her promise and kept Ruby safe, I need to find her again and stand by her side."
"If you are going, I am going too. If Plagueheart truly is Palla, she is sure to make more trouble for herself in prison, and if it not too late, I want to see her freed too." Pennar's eyes narrowed in determination. It was clear he was deep in thought. "Transportation magic seems like something the arcane flight would experiment with, and they are known to play around with other dimensions, they seem the most likely place for a prison of that stature."
"You are right. I am not experienced in dragon magic, but the Starfall Islands are also close enough in range that he could feasibly teleport her there. We should check there first." Tess said, closing her eyes with satisfaction. The heat from the campfire felt nice, and the smell of the cooking birds was beginning to fill the air. Suddenly, a thought occured to her. "Do you want to see your family before we go. We are very close."
Pennar shook his head. "I would like to, but I don't want them to see me like this. And right now, it sounds like Pall- Plagueheart needs my help. If I die on this rescue mission, I don't want my family to have to lose me twice. I will see them after my sister is safe and sound."
"Only if you are absolutely certain. It would not take more than a day flying there and back. I could wait here for you." Tess offered. "Family is important, Pennar."
"I know, but Plagueheart has always felt an outcast among her own family." Pennar sighed. "I want to show her how much she means to me, because to me, she means more than anyone else. We've done everything together, and when I got sick, she fought to stay by my side. I don't want to leave hers."
"We'll leave for the Starfall Isles tomorrow at dawn then." Tess decided. This journey could not be put off any longer.
So, how many people were expecting Pennar's return? I've been very excited about this idea for a while now, and I am very happy to reintroduce him into the story.
Sorry for the lack of update yesterday. I felt after I consistent writing, I was in need of a break and kind of put off doing it.
