It keeps watch, over the wind and the waves, a great light burning at the top as a welcome and guide to weary travelers. Around the tower are floating platforms, tied together and held aloft by balloons and sails. Some of these are ports for sky ships, others act as parts of markets and other fixtures for the dragons that dwell in and around the tower. Some lead away from the tower, eventually joining with the Cloudsong. At the bottom of the cliffs is another, smaller port, this one for ships of the sea. A path is carved up the side of the cliff so dragons who struggle with flight can reach the bottom of the cliffs safely. The tower is not cold and foreboding. Quite the opposite actually. The tower has many wide widows and balconies, lanturns and banners hanging in every opening, changing to reflect the time of year and any current celebrations. A small clan of dragons live in and around the tower, lead by the wise and loving Queen Fenn, a former Arcane princess who, at a young age, changed allegiance to wind and started her own clan. She and her husband have just returned from the service of the Windsinger to live out their new calling. The clan owns a small fleet of ships. Some dragons live most of their lives in Windkeep Tower, while others spend their day journeying through the skies and seas. One thing is for certain, no matter how far they wander and how long they are gone, Windkeep Tower will always be their home. Hello, I'm Petall and welcome to my Clan Lore! I really enjoy writing, and I figure that now that I have a smaller clan, and will not be getting new dragons faster than I can write lore for them, that I will be writing out the story of my clan lore. This way, I can focus on character development and enjoy my dragons to the full. A lot of my lore will follow site events, so you can expect updates based on updates and the various elemental holidays. My lore does not completely follow the site canon, but I try to be as close as I can. I hope you enjoy, and if you want to be on the pinglist, just let me know! A list of members of Windkeep Tower and where they reside within the tower. Warning: there may be spoilers if you are not up to date with the story.

Beacon Suites
The beacon suites were crafted for those who's job is to tend the beacon flame, but has since expanded to accommodate the Amberlyn family. The Courier centre is also here at the top of the tower.

Regal Suite
The royal suite takes up an entire floor. While not overly ornate or extravagant, it is elegant and comfortable and has balconies on all sides that open to the skies.

VIP Suites
Where the richest/highest status members of Windkeep Tower live. It should be noted Windkeep Tower doesn't place much value on wealth and status, and these members of Windkeep Tower don't get any special treatment other than these suites.

Library Suites
The Library is built out of the ship Sacredscream flew to Windkeep Tower with the survivors of Crescendo Isle.

Long Term Visitor Suites
A floor of suites where long term or regular visitors can stay.

Market Suites
Where the main market dragons live with their mates. Their suites are attached to indoor storefronts for when the weather is bad. This floor is also where the ports for the air ships are built off of and this is usually what visitors see when they first arrive.

Magic Market Suites
This floor is where dragons who provide magical services live. Like the market suites, each dwelling is attached to a shop.

Trades Suites
This floor is where laboratories, workshops and other messy establishments can be found. The dragons who live and work here have suites attached to their workshops so they can be close to their work.

Medical Ward
This floor is where dragons in need of medical attention stay, tended to by the ever dedicated healer.
  • Healer Suite: Aata

Warriors Suites
While these suites are more simple and worn on account of the rowdy behavior of the clan warriors, this floor is known for being a good place to come, hang out, be loud, and challenge other dragons to ridiculous duels.

Banella's Suite
When building the theatre, Banella set aside half a floor to be her own suite. Like Banella, her quarters are shrouded in mystery.

Novus Theatre Suites
Those who work regularly in the theatre have their own suites built backstage.

Copper Lotus Suites
The tavern and inn are where most travelers stay, though regular staff at the Copper Lotus also have their own suites.

Nesting Grounds
While some dragons tend to their nests in the comfort of their own suites, most find it beneficial to nest outside where eggs are regularly in contact with the wind. The nesting grounds are a safe haven for parents to nest and raise their children.

Mansion
Once owned by Quartz, the mansion now acts as an embassy for inter-clan and inter-flight relations. It is also a safe haven for those seeking protection, as no harm is allowed to come to anyone within the walls while they are within them. There is also a subsection to allow for the negotiation of dragon/beastclan relations.

Garden Huts
Some dragons who prefer being closer to the outdoors have built dwellings in the cultivated bamboo forest and gardens.
  • Gardener Dwelling: Ganya
  • Familiar Dwelling: Porter & Robin
  • Spirit Dwelling: Moira
  • Movable Dwelling: Luster (Moves the location of his tent on a daily basis, has no permanent dwelling location)

Port Hut
A small dwelling on the docks next to the port where the portmaster and his wife live.

Cliff Caves
Many of the residents of Windkeep Tower are unaware of the cave system that exists beneath the cliffs of the clan. The caves provide a perfect location for dragons to hide something they may not want found.

Circus Caravans
Each performer within the circus has their own caravan in which to rest and prepare for performances, regardless of whether or not they live elsewhere.

Other Characters
These characters are either former members of Windkeep Tower, former characters in the story, or characters who are not yet affiliated with Windkeep Tower.

Cameos
These are dragons belonging to other people who have made an appearance in The Stories of Windkeep Tower, in order of appearance. Some of these dragons are past dragons of mine from previous clans.

Prologue: A Letter

25173192_350.png

Sacredscream dropped his quill and buried his face in his paws in frustration. Everything was chaos. Queen Hestia was losing more and more control each day and the clan was a mess. Not for the first time, he felt a longing for a time when he had served under a more sane and caring queen.

What was the point of writing a clan history if none of the clan was on the same page? Half the clan were living lives as thieves or poisoners or other foul professions, caring only for themselves. Meanwhile, in the palace, Queen Hestia pretended to have total control of the clan, never stepping outside her bubble of a palace to prove otherwise. There were even rumors of a faction of shade-touched residing on the borders of the clan, gradually stirring up trouble.

He looked up only when he heard footsteps, and he looked up to see a fiery wildclaw approaching him. She was an old friend from the clan he had lived in before arriving at Crescendo Isle.

"Ah, Amberlyn." He sighed wearily. "How are you?"

"I'm alright." She kept her answer short, as if she didn't want to go into it. Sacredscream understood. They had both lost much when they lost their first clan, and this new kingdom was hardly a good replacement. Neither had said it aloud, but it didn't feel like home.

"What can I do for you?" Sacredscream asked, rolling up the scroll he had been working on. He was grateful to have a distraction.

"I was wondering if you had heard of the earthquakes in the Dragonhome." Amberlyn presses.

"Just earthquakes, I'm sure. They are known to happen." Sacredscream dismissed it. He too had heard the rumors, but he had grown too tired of hope to indulge in them.

"But the scale of them! It's like nothing they've ever seen before!" Amberlyn protested. "Do you think it possible? They are awakening?"

"Only time will tell."

"It's just- I'm pretty sure the Flamecaller saved my life, back when I was caught in that fire. I mean, I didn't see her physically, but it felt like there was more going on there. If they are truly returning, that must mean something. What if the reason I was saved was to serve some greater purpose?"

Something flashed across Sacredscream's memory, something buried so deep his forgetful tundra brain shouldn't have remembered it. A great arcane city, once standing tall and proud, reduced to a flaming rubble. A desperate escape. The smell of arcane residue that lingers after a large spell, a spell that should never have been possible. The sense that something must have helped to make it happen, something must have helped him escape and survive.

"It's a possibility." Sacredscream admitted.

Suddenly, their conversation was interrupted by a spiral bursting through the library, accidentally knocking over a stack of books.

"Sorry!" The spiral gasped. "I just have a letter for you, Sir." She handed Sacredscream an envelope, dipped her head politely at Amberlyn, and sped off again.

Sacredscream broke the wax seal holding the envelope shut. It held a crest, a symbol he had not seen in a long time.

The letter inside was written in a familiar, impossible handwriting. Sacredscream had to reread the letter three times to be sure it was real.

"What is it? What's happened?" Amberlyn asked eagerly. She must have seen the crest and also felt the same glimmer of hope that was rising within him.

"I think-" Sacredscream struggled to find the words amidst his shock. "Something is happening. Fenn and Elric have returned from serving the Windsinger as his exalted. We can go home."

----- Previous ----- Chapter 1: Rocks Shift, Ground Quakes Lin jolted awake to a cracking noise and a trembling ground. Without even taking time to think, he put on his hat, grabbed his mage's bag, and raced out of his house into the night. Around him, he could hear the screams of the dragons around him. He took off into the air as the airborne island began to shake even further. So it was true. The Earthshaker was awakening, and he was reclaiming what was his. The island had always been unnatural. From the moment Lin, in his past life, had hoisted it up above the swirling storm of the Twisting Crescendo, it had filled all who laid eyes on it with a sense of unease, and nothing he could do could break that. Now it's true fate was returning. If there was one thing Lin had learned in his life as a mage, it was that balance must always be kept. "To the skies! To the skies!" Lin called, trying to be heard above the cacophony of the clan. The gale around the island was treacherous, but they stood a better chance flying through it than plunging to their deaths with the rocks below their feet. Some dragons heeded his warning. Others were frozen in shock. Screaming. Something had to be done. With all his might, he tried to hoist the island up. It had been a long time since he had tried to control this much dirt and rock, and he was only able to hold control for a few short seconds. Exhausted, but refusing to give up, he tried again, this time letting the uninhabited edges of the island fall away while he tried to hold the center. This too proved difficult, but he could manage it slightly better. "To the skies! To the skies!" He called again. To his relief, more dragons heeded his warning, and he could hear the echo of his words as others shouted his advice. It wasn't long before Lin was beginning to grow dizzy. His vision swam, and darkness threatened the corners of his vision. He couldn't keep this up for much longer. He could already feel more and more rock slipping away. "Please... Hurry..." He mumbled, too quietly for his clanmates to hear him. Moments later, he let go, sending the island crumbling away to the ground. "Help! Help!" A wildclaw called, clinging to a boulder that still hung precariously in the sky. It must have been near the core of the island, where the magic had been the strongest. He had a bow and quiver slung over his shoulder. "Orkeck! I've got you!" Lin cried, once again casting his magic to hold the boulder in place. Normally, he would have not cast any more magic after expending so much energy, but he couldn't let another dragon die on his watch, not if some had already lost their lives with the fall of the island. "Can you fly?" Lin called again. "My wing!" Orkeck called. "I think it's broken! A rock hit it!" "I've got you!" Lin called again, feeling a rare rush of panic. He couldn't let go, but if he kept this up for much longer, he'd faint and both of them would fall to their dooms. Suddenly, an airship came into view. It creaked through the sky, like it wasn't used to the open air. In some corner of his mind, Lin recognized it as the airship that had been converted into the clan's library. "I'm going to try to get you on the ship!" Lin called to Orkeck. The terrified young wildclaw only nodded, pale green eyes wide with fear. Lin took a deep breath, and with the last of his magic, began to manoeuvre the boulder towards the ship. It took deep concentration, but slowly, he was able to get it closer to the ship. Suddenly, a gust of wind buffeted Lin, and his concentration was lost. Weariness overtook him, and the last thing he saw before losing consciousness was a fiery orange blur burst from the ship towards Orkeck. His surroundings were unfamiliar. For one, the breeze outside sounded a lot more calm than the fierce gales of the Twisting Crescendo. "You're awake." The tundra said, breathing a sigh of relief. "You've expended a lot of energy, Lin. You need to take it easy for the next little while." "What happened?" Lin asked. His throat felt very dry. "How do you know my name." "Your clan, the Kingdom of Crescendo Isle, fell. Orkeck tells me we have you to thank for so many lives being saved." The fae responded. Her pale green eyes were soft and nurturing. "He told us everything." "How did I end up here?" "Sacredscream and Amberlyn were able to catch you before you fell too far. They brought you with them here, to Windkeep Tower. We are a sanctuary for the traveler, a refuge for the lost, a retreat for the devoted, a crossroads; we have become known for many things." The guardian explained. "And who are you?" "I'm Queen Fenn, servant of the Windsinger, brought back with my husband, Elric, to form this clan in the Windsinger's name." The fae explained, exchanging a look with the guardian. "Things are changing in Sornieth, as I am sure you know. The deities are awakening again, and we must be ready. That's why we built this place. You are welcome to stay as long as you wish." "But first, you must recover." The tundra urged softly. "I won't have you flying off anywhere or making anymore floating islands until you have returned to peak condition." "We'll leave you in Zolean's care." Elric said, nodding to Lin. "He is a fantastic healer and will take good care of you." "If you need anything, or have any questions, feel free to find me and ask." Fenn smiled. "I'm here to help, and to serve my clan. Welcome to Windkeep Tower, Lin." ----- Next ----- @CleverDual

Chapter 1: Rocks Shift, Ground Quakes

35290001_350.png

Lin jolted awake to a cracking noise and a trembling ground.

A rock hit it!"

"I've got you!" Lin called again, feeling a rare rush of panic. He couldn't let go, but if he kept this up for much longer, he'd faint and both of them would fall to their dooms.

Sacredscream sighed as he shelved the last of his books and scrolls. Everything was complete, and everything was as it should be once more. Well, almost complete, there was still something he was missing. A few embers still glowed on the fabric of his coat. The bells on his clothing jingled as he shivered, though not from the cold. He could hardly explain what had happened. Maybe one day, he'd be able to, and he could turn it into a song or a story, but everything was a fog right now. If it hadn't been for the smokey smell that clung so heavily to him, he would have wondered if it was all a dream. He had left his birth clan in the early morning, before the sun had risen. He hadn't planned on being gone long. He had just wanted to know if the rumors were true, and everyone knows the place you are most likely to encounter the Flamecaller is the Great Furnace. What he hadn't counted on was the Great Furnace erupting. No sooner had be peered over the edge had a great black smoke begun to rise, and molten rock began spitting over the edge. He had taken off immediately, but being a fae, he couldn't fly as fast as other breeds. He had gotten caught up in the smoke and blown away. He had only just been able to fly out of it and tumble towards wind territory. He shivered once again. He needed to go somewhere, but he didn't feel strong enough to fly back home. Not yet. "Are you okay?" A dry voice rasped behind Merry. It sounded as if it had not been used in a long time. He turned around to see a veiled skydancer. He could not see her eyes to tell which flight she had been born of. Merry's voice cracked as he spoke, and he coughed. There must still be smoke in his lungs. "I'm Merry. What's your name?" "My name . . ." The skydancer paused, as if confused by the question. "Carmen." She said slowly, as though not sure that was the right answer. "Are you okay, Carmen?" Merry asked. The skydancer didn't answer, just stared blankly at the fae shivering before her. Merry wished he could see the expression on her face. 'Come . . . I know a place." Carmen said finally, slowly turning to face deeper into the Windswept Plateau. Merry wasn't sure whether he trusted her or not, but he didn't have much of a choice. He fluttered up beside her. "May I rest on your back?" He wheezed. "I don't have the energy-" Carmen nodded. Once Merry got settled between her wings, she spread them wide and took off to the skies. Merry clung on. Despite his fear, he couldn't help but be amazed by the view. There was so much green and the sun was beginning to set, casting a stunning array of colours across the horizon. It was almost dark by the time they approached their destination. A tower rose up on a cliff overlooking the Sea of a Thousand Currents. On its peak, a large fire was burning, making it a beacon in the night. The fire sent shivers down Merry's spine, and suddenly, a memory flashed back. The smoke hit Merry and suddenly he could see nothing but the thick blackness that surrounded him. He couldn't tell what direction he was flying anymore, but he flapped his wings as hard as he could, desperate to get somewhere. Suddenly, there was a break in the smoke, and Merry found himself right over top of the middle of the Great Furnace. The lava had risen and was pouring down the sides of the slope faster than he had ever seen lava flow before. Sparks were flying and rocks were being hurled into the air. He only narrowly avoided being hit by a large piece of pumice. That's when he saw it. A great orange eye. It stared into him like it could see his very soul and words filled his head. "This Inferno Consumes." Suddenly, he got swept up in another bout of smoke and this time he could feel himself being pulled away from the Great Furnace and cast out in another direction. Merry shook his head to clear the memory away. Had he really seen the Flamecaller? In person? And lived to tell the tale? It must have been a dream, a hallucination as a result of the lack of oxygen getting into his brain. He took a deep breath, and realized that Carmen had stopped. "Is this your clan?" He croaked. Carmen shook her head. "But it is a clan of friends." She said after a long pause. Merry hung close to his charred lute as he felt the cool breeze wash over his scales.

"Are you okay?" A dry voice rasped behind Merry. It sounded as if it had not been used in a long time. He turned around to see a veiled skydancer. He could not see her eyes to tell which flight she had been born of.

"I'm fine." Merry's voice cracked as he spoke, and he coughed. There must still be smoke in his lungs. "I'm Merry. What's your name?"

"My name . . ." The skydancer paused, as if confused by the question. "Carmen." She said slowly, as though not sure that was the right answer.

A great orange eye.

It stared into him like it could see his very soul and words filled his head.

"This Inferno Consumes."

Suddenly, he got swept up in another bout of smoke and this time he could feel himself being pulled away from the Great Furnace and cast out in another direction.

Merry shook his head to clear the memory away. Had he really seen the Flamecaller? In person? And lived to tell the tale? It must have been a dream, a hallucination as a result of the lack of oxygen getting into his brain. He took a deep breath, and realized that Carmen had stopped.
