---------------------------------------
Burial Guardians are a type of dragon that exist in my lore that I want to share with others in hopes they will exist outside of just my lair! They are spirits that exist in purgatory on Sornieth. All of these dragons are deceased. Their goal is to prevent any further spread of The Shade. Any species of dragon can be a Burial Guardian, though it is important to note their appearances and which breeds are the most plentiful.
What Do They Do?
---------------------------------------
The role of a Burial Guardian is to attend to the recently deceased. The ancient darkness, The Shade, preys on fresh spirits (the elemental energy that comes from these dragons feeds them). This can create vengeful spirits, shade-touched dragons, or just new strands of the shade itself. A Burial Guardian's goal is to reach the spirit first and try to assist it before the shade can cause any form of permanent damage. Not all attempts are successful, naturally, but the more dragons they help the better. Some Burial Guardians are better at assisting with certain types of trauma than others, but they all share the same goals and concerns.
How Are They Created?
---------------------------------------
Burial Guardians were all once normal dragons who are now walking in their own form of purgatory. Just like the dragons they now help, they too struggled to pass on. Reasons vary from dragon to dragon, it's up to the owner to truly decide what caused the dragon's death. Were they murdered? Complications during childbirth? Died of a broken heart? No matter the cause, by becoming a Burial Guardian the dragon has shown they are either unable to pass on or simply have chosen to stay in purgatory.
Why Are These A "Lore Subspecies?"
---------------------------------------
This was not originally intended to go outside of my own lair, but I was already fascinated by subspecies and wanted to do something a little different. I feel like it allows a little more freedom too (no need for breeding pairs). More importantly though, it's a way to emphasize that there are many Burial Guardians out there in Sornieth, and not just contained to my own lair. There's also a lot of leeway to make each character unique in personality and back story, as this is mostly a "role".

Breeds & Colors
Any dragon can be a burial guardian, there are no breed limitations. However, some dragons are more likely to become one than others. Their hierarchy is as follows:

*Imperials are the rarest breed due to the fact that many Imperials who died and experience Trauma become Emperors instead. Imperials who retain their form show a lot of control and are highly respected.
GAOLERS: Now that ancient breeds have been added there will need to be updates! Of course, Gaolers can be burial guardians too! They will be considered a "Very Rare" breed, as will all ancients!
-----------------------------------------
The colors of these dragons are restricted for the most part. Due to their decaying the vast majority of Burial Guardians have primarily DARK shades/colors. Generally the only brighter colors are shades of gold or colors similar to dried or decaying bones.
List Of Acceptable Colors*:
Gloom, Lead, Shale, Coal, Oilslick, Black, Obsidian, Eldritch, Midnight, Shadow, Blackberry, Eggplant, Navy, Abyss, Phthalo, Jungle, Hunter, Forest, Swamp, Murk, Moss, Bronze, Terracotta, Slate, Driftwood, Sable, Umber, Chocolate, Garnet, Sanguine, Blood, Maroon, & Wine
*include but are not limited to
Of course, due to certain genes such as stained, some colors can appear differently so keep that in mind. Greens, blacks, and reds are the more common choices. The important thing overall is dark colors, plague colors, or bone.
-----------------------------------------
Eye colors do not matter! Some Burial Guardians may choose to cover their eyes, believing that their elements no longer matter beyond the grave, but it is absolutely not a requirement. Any element and any eye type is acceptable for a Burial Guardian.

Guidelines
*This idea is just for fun and works a little differently than other subspecies as it is more based on a role than breeding. There's a lot more options than some subspecies may have as a result! I'm pretty open about using these guys, don't expect me to come hounding you over it, just be kind and ask questions if you need to!
*These Burial Guardians are tied to my lore. You are more than welcome to discuss lore with me, but it is not necessary. By making a Burial Guardian you must agree to be comfortable with my use of them in lore as a concept.

Big thanks to my friend @/KyaniteGem for making outfits for people to use!
And a big thank you to everyone who comes to check out the thread and is interested in this lore concept! You're all incredible and I love every dragon you show me, really.
