The Snowfall Retreat

Deep within the Cloudscrape Crags exists an unusual retreat that is rumored to have connections with other realms far beyond the lands of Sornieth. There have been very few visitors to set foot on these grounds, but those that have come to learn rather quickly that the retreat itself is not the only unusual thing about this place.

Well, this isn't anything new. You never show up in time. You're always too late. The great fire of the Fairy King's Forest twenty years ago...and that time seven hundred years ago...and now, this time, a giantess girl will die because of you. - Helbram

It was never long before he picked himself back up and continued on, only stopping when his legs could no longer carry him. At first his wandering seemed aimless, but with every step he took the young imperial could feel something pulling him along. It wasn't until he came face to face with the Cloudscrape Crags that Shiho finally felt the connection he shared with something hidden deep within these mountains. He had a purpose there and he was determined to find it. With a new fire lit inside him, Shiho pressed on and entered the treacherous mountain range. Shiho's determination lasted for months as he endlessly searched the wide mountain range, refusing to give up even when the weather took a turn for the worst. His determination finally paid off after eight months, for there on the highest peak was a strange flower who's appearance sent chills down Shiho's spine yet at the same time filled him with warmth. The flower was quite large, even for an imperial, and in the center of the flower where the stigma should be was what could only be described as a cauldron. Within this cauldron was a shallow pool of strange, yellow liquid that gave off an eerie glow. Unsure of what this flower was, Shiho knew only that it held some great purpose in his life and that it was his job alone to protect it. With a new goal in sight he set out to building a home on this peak that would shelter them both from the cold chill. It took months of digging out part of the mountain and collecting materials, but Shiho finally built the perfect shelter that preserved and protected the flower. It was here that the next big part of Shiho's life would begin as the flower's secrets slowly began to reveal themselves. Shiho and The Egg of Rebirth: After months of nothing, Shiho began to question his purpose for being there and of the flowers'. He would sit day and night, always keeping one eye on the flower and yet the strange plant had shown no signs of doing anything worth while. Desperate and hungry he decided to take leave of this place in search of food and perhaps a new path to follow. Surprisingly it didn't take long for Shiho to find and hunt down enough food to satisfy his hunger. Now with a full belly and a clearer mind he settled on heading back home for the night, a decision would have to wait for morning after he got enough rest. His trip back was disrupted half-way however as he spotted something unusual in the snow below. Upon seeing the strange object Shiho suddenly felt frantic, almost like he needed desperately to protect it. With great speed he quickly landed beside the object and lifted it out from the snow. Shiho felt his breath get caught in his throat as he glanced down at the cold, dead egg he now held in his claws. An egg this far from civilization was no accident, it was abandoned either by another dragon or a beast. Even knowing that the egg no longer held any life Shiho could not abandon it to the cold any longer and carefully wrapped his tail around it before taking off back home. After making it back safely Shiho quickly found a warm, secure place to keep the egg for the night. Come morning he would give the poor thing a proper farewell and take his own leave from this place. Once a proper fire was lit he allowed himself to doze off, no longer worrying about the flower or even the egg as his mind faded out. Peaceful sleep didn't come however as Shiho began to dream of a strange creature he'd never seen before. It reminded him almost of a centaur, but with two very strange legs in place of a horse's body. The dream followed this creatures strange life, one filled with spirits of the departed and of the struggles it faced in order to protect those it held dear. It wasn't long before the dream came to an abrupt end and Shiho found himself jolted awake, a loud ringing having filled his ears. Through the ringing the dazed imperial thought he heard a voice whisper a rather strange name in his ear. Odd Thomas. Shiho wasn't sure what to think of this name, it wasn't like one he had ever heard of, but he didn't have long to ponder over it as something else within the room caught his attention. The flower's liquid was emitting an even brighter glow than usual, one that reached every nook and crack. Upon closer inspection Shiho was surprised to find that the liquid was gently swirling as if someone had recently stirred it. He wasn't quite sure what to make of this, but he did notice that he kept averting his gaze from the flower over to the egg. When he looked down upon it Shiho could sense that there was a connection between the three of them and decided to try something crazy. He picked up the egg and placed it gently within the flower, submerging the bottom half in the liquid. Nothing, but silence filled the room as Shiho sat and watched the egg for what felt like hours. When it became clear that nothing unusual was happening he allowed himself to lay back down and once more drift out of the waking world, this time with no dreams whatsoever. Cracking was the first sound that Shiho heard upon waking up the next morning. Memories of the night before rushed back and he quickly sprang up to check on the egg. To his surprise and joy the egg was slowly cracking open, small noises coming from inside. It didn't take long for the newly hatched dragon to crawl his way out of the shell, his bright green eyes darting everywhere as he took in his surroundings. When his presence finally became known Shiho carefully picked up the young one and placed him on the featherback pelt he had been using as a bed. Tired and warm the hatchling quickly fell asleep. Needing a new name for the young one he suddenly recalled the strange name he had heard that night. Despite what he thought of the name Shiho could not see giving him any other name and when he tried not a single one held any weight against this one. So he sat there all day and watched over his new companion, Odd Thomas. Odd would later prove himself worthy of the namesake as he began to show traits that aligned perfectly with that of the creature from Shiho's dream. The years to come would be some of the strangest, but also some of the best times of Shiho's life for now he understood what the flower's purpose in life was as well as his own. They were both there to help give new life to those who have lost their's from other realms far beyond Sornieth. Realms that revealed themselves through the imperials dreams. Odd Thomas was the first to be given a second chance, but he surely would not be the last.

The tallest of the three is the center mountain which reaches nearly double the height of the others. Everything located within this half circle is claimed by the retreat with anything else simply being an extra resource that is available to all. The Snowfall is a large, multi-level retreat that has been carved and built into the face of the center mountain. The retreat is made up of separate, circular, hut like buildings that are connected by a series of wooden bridges and ladders. Half of each building has been built into the mountain with the other half sticking out of the mountain side. Each building has a wide platform that goes around the outer half of the building where the bridges and ladders attach. The faces of the other two mountains consist of housing for the residents that live at the retreat. Each building is made in the same fashion as the retreat with the exception of the ladders and bridges. These are only added between houses at the residents' request and is usually only done between family and friends. Every building within the retreat's grounds has at least two torches, one on each side of the doorway. The Snowfall itself has multiple torches lining the walls both inside and out in order to keep the place warm and cozy. The amount of extra torches in and out of residents' personal houses varies between them. Shiho's Room (SR) : Built into the peak of the center mountain is the first and original building that Shiho made after arriving here. This building is Shiho's private room and where the blooming cauldron rests. In order to keep the flower rooted in its original location the room was built around it with the ground next to its base being left untouched by flooring. ----- Library (LB) : One level below Shiho's room on the right is the Library. This is where residents can go and read the surprising amount of books that are available. These books are kept on a very long bookcase that rests against and follows the wall from one side of the door to the other. The bookcase only reaches halfway up the wall and has three rows of shelves (The individual shelves are all divided into small sections for easy organizing). Torches line the wall a few inches above the bookcase creating just enough light to read while still maintaining a relaxing atmosphere. Between and under the torches is enough room for residents to place small objects atop the bookcase giving the room a more decorative and personal look. In the very center of the room is a medium sized, circular table that residents may use to either read or write at. This is where most writing and reading based classes are held due to the library providing them with everything they need. The rest of the room is occupied by a handful of sitting pillows, made of featherback pelts and snow streak pinions, for the residents to relax on while they read. ----- Bath House (BH) : One level below Shiho's room on the left is the Bath House. The bath house has been divided into two rooms, male and female, and is separated by a thick wall. The back half of each room, that which is inside the mountain, has had the ground dug out deeper and filled with water to create the bathing pools. These pools are kept heated at a relaxing, warm temperature by warming stones which have been placed in the baths. In the center of the front halves of the rooms is a small fire pit which residents may sit around to dry off before taking their leave. ----- Training Room (TR) : A medium sized room located right below the bath house and library where residents can go spar with one another in practice and challenge. The wall of the training room has been built three times as thick as any other building in order to withstand non-magic styles of fighting such as swords and claws. Unfortunately if one wishes to practice their magical abilities they must take the fighting elsewhere away from the retreat's grounds While most sword fighters are quick to get their claws on a real sword the retreat keeps and offers a variety of fake swords to use for training. It is also encouraged to use these fake swords when sparing with fellow residents as to keep everyone safe. ----- Dining Hall (DH) : On the second level, below the training room and to the left is the dining hall. This is where the residents gather to eat breakfast, lunch, and dinner, all of which take place at certain scheduled times of the day. In between meals there are usually plenty of snacks to hold everyone over and to provide those that might have missed a meal something to keep them fed. The tables for eating are located around the outer section of the room, towards the wall. In the center of the room is a full, circular counter that doubles as the food counter and bar. The bartender(s) are able to glide over the counter and stand in the middle where they can quickly turn and serve residents from any direction. The inner part of the counter where the bartender(s) stand has been cut out to create two long shelves (Top and Bottom) in which the drinks and ingredients are stored. ----- Cooking Room (CR) : To the left of the dining hall is a slightly smaller building who's only entrance way is through a tunnel located in the back of the dining hall. This is the cooking room where the chef(s) goes to prepare the days meals. Ingredients are brought in fresh every morning and cooked over the large fire pit in the center of the room. The entrance way was built into the dining hall in order to keep the food from having to travel outside in the cold between buildings as it is delivered to the counter. In order to keep the two rooms from filling up with smoke the cooking room has had a couple of small holes cut into the wall, right below the roof, that act as vents. The rising smoke has become a signal of sorts for the residents that lets them know it's time to eat. ----- Lounge (LG) : On the second level, below the training room and to the right is the lounge. This is where the residents can gather to hang out and chat with friends or just chill. The outer section of the room is filled with sitting pillows which the residents may move around as they like in order to sit closer or farther from fellow residents. In the center of the room is a circular, wooden stage where residents are welcome to put on small shows and acts to entertain fellow residents. Though it was never a requirement, it has become common place for anyone looking to go on stage to ask Shiho first in order to make sure the stage is available. ----- Greenhouse (GH) : The only building within the retreat that isn't circular, the ground level is a long, rectangular building that stretches all the way across the base of the center mountain. This entire ground level is one large greenhouse filled with the many different plants of Sornieth that have been collected during some of the residents' travels. In order to keep a majority of the plants alive the greenhouse has been built deeper into the mountain and it's walls lined with featherback pelts making it the warmest building in the retreat. ----- Greenhouse Clinic (GHC) : Located within the back of the greenhouse, the clinic is a small room where residents can go to get medicine when sick or injured. The clinic was built within the greenhouse due to its use of natural remedies and herbs. With a variety of medicinal plants directly at its disposal no other location was better fitting. ----- Swimming Pool (SP) : Located in the center of the greenhouse is a small swimming pool that may accommodate a small handful of dragons at a time. This pool of water has been dug out and filled in such a way as to mimic a natural pond with unclean edges and a center that grows deeper. A small selection of underwater plants have been added over time to give the pool an even more natural feel. These plants also allow for a small variety of critters to live within the pool. Most residents who go swimming aren't bothered by them as they tend to stay closer to the bottom. ----- Storage Buildings (SB) : On the backside of the center mountain are four medium sized buildings that store all of the retreat's supplies. These buildings are set up in a square design with food and water being stored in the bottom two. The top two buldings hold the retreat's large coal supply and extra materials. Food Storage - The food storage building is where they keep all of the food that can last longer when frozen or chilled. Some residents even prefer certain foods after they have been left to chill overnight such as strawberries and blue roses. Extra cooking and bar supplies are also kept here in order to keep these two places less cluttered. No torches or pelts line the wall of this building in order to allow the cold in and naturally freeze the food. Water Storage - The water storage building is where they keep all of the pre-made drinking water. The water is made and stored in wooden barrels that are then brought up to the bar when needed. When the water supply reaches near empty all of the empty barrels are then refilled and stored away once again. A good few torches line the wall in order to keep the water from refreezing. Coal Storage - The coal storage building is where they keep the rather large supply of coal. Due to its high importance the coal supply is never allowed to go below half of its usual amount. The wall of this building is lined with featherback pelts in order to keep the coal from freezing. The decision was made to use pelts instead of torches in order to avoid the risk of setting the coal on fire. Materials Storage - The materials storage building is where they keep all the extra materials that are commonly used around and by the retreat. Only materials meant for the entire retreat are allowed to be stored here. All personal materials must be stored in a resident's personal room. This building has also had its wall lined with featherback pelt due to some materials being a high risk for catching on fire. ----- Personal Rooms (PR) : Scattered around the faces of the left and right mountains are the residents' personal rooms. These building are all set up the same way with a small fire pit in the center for warmth and the rest of the room left empty aside from a bed. In order to make the room their own the residents are free to decorate and fill their rooms any way they please. Some have even modified the rooms themselves to better fit their needs and desires, such as having the room built farther into the mountain for more warmth. Frozen Lake (FL) : Located not far from the base of the center mountain, this medium sized lake has been frozen over since the day Shiho first arrived. Closer inspection of the lake has revealed that there is no longer any life beneath the ice. While not suitable for activities such as fishing or swimming, the lake is a great source of entertainment for those that love to ice skate. ----- Twisting Tunnels (TT) : On the backside to one of the neighboring mountains lies an entrance way leading into the mountain's core. This small cave entrance turns into a series of weaving tunnels that go all throughout the mountain. As one makes their way deeper into the tunnels they are sure to encounter a variety of threats that only become more dangerous as one progresses. ----- Whispering Woods (WW) : Located directly outside of the retreat's claimed grounds, creating an almost false border line, is a rather large stretch of forest that the residents have dubbed the Whispering Woods. The trees there are bare year round, the only thing covering their branches being the snow and icicles created by the cold. A heavy and almost eerie fog always seems to weave through the trees, making travel through them rather difficult for most. The reason behind its name is just as eerie and something that most residents prefer not to talk about either out of fright or disbelief. If one is lucky they may encounter a resident willing to share this tale, or perhaps even walk away with their own tale to tell of the Whispering Woods. The Retreat and Grounds
icemid.png

The grounds of which the Snowfall Retreat resides consists of three large mountains that connect at the base and form a wide, half circle.

Library (LB) : One level below Shiho's room on the right is the Library.

Bath House (BH) : One level below Shiho's room on the left is the Bath House.

Training Room (TR) : A medium sized room located right below the bath house and library where residents can go spar with one another in practice and challenge. The wall of the training room has been built three times as thick as any other building in order to withstand non-magic styles of fighting such as swords and claws. Unfortunately if one wishes to practice their magical abilities they must take the fighting elsewhere away from the retreat's grounds

While most sword fighters are quick to get their claws on a real sword the retreat keeps and offers a variety of fake swords to use for training. It is also encouraged to use these fake swords when sparing with fellow residents as to keep everyone safe.

Dining Hall (DH) : On the second level, below the training room and to the left is the dining hall.

Cooking Room (CR) : To the left of the dining hall is a slightly smaller building who's only entrance way is through a tunnel located in the back of the dining hall.

Lounge (LG) : On the second level, below the training room and to the right is the lounge.

Greenhouse (GH) : The only building within the retreat that isn't circular, the ground level is a long, rectangular building that stretches all the way across the base of the center mountain.

Greenhouse Clinic (GHC) : Located within the back of the greenhouse, the clinic is a small room where residents can go to get medicine when sick or injured. The clinic was built within the greenhouse due to its use of natural remedies and herbs. With a variety of medicinal plants directly at its disposal no other location was better fitting.

Swimming Pool (SP) : Located in the center of the greenhouse is a small swimming pool that may accommodate a small handful of dragons at a time.

Storage Buildings (SB) : On the backside of the center mountain are four medium sized buildings that store all of the retreat's supplies.

Personal Rooms (PR) : Scattered around the faces of the left and right mountains are the residents' personal rooms. These building are all set up the same way with a small fire pit in the center for warmth and the rest of the room left empty aside from a bed. In order to make the room their own the residents are free to decorate and fill their rooms any way they please. Some have even modified the rooms themselves to better fit their needs and desires, such as having the room built farther into the mountain for more warmth.

icemid.png

Frozen Lake (FL) : Located not far from the base of the center mountain, this medium sized lake has been frozen over since the day Shiho first arrived. Closer inspection of the lake has revealed that there is no longer any life beneath the ice. While not suitable for activities such as fishing or swimming, the lake is a great source of entertainment for those that love to ice skate.

Twisting Tunnels (TT) : On the backside to one of the neighboring mountains lies an entrance way leading into the mountain's core. This small cave entrance turns into a series of weaving tunnels that go all throughout the mountain. As one makes their way deeper into the tunnels they are sure to encounter a variety of threats that only become more dangerous as one progresses.

Whispering Woods (WW) : Located directly outside of the retreat's claimed grounds, creating an almost false border line, is a rather large stretch of forest that the residents have dubbed the Whispering Woods.

To welcome the new dragon into their home the residents all gather in the lounge for a celebration that honors the hatchling. As all of the eggs tend to hatch in the early morning the celebration is held at noon that same day, giving the hatchling enough time to rest and for the others to prepare. The celebration is meant to introduce the hatchling to all of their fellow residents and hopefully allow them to start forming relationships early. To keep everyone entertained and mingling with one another a variety of games and snacks are made available. A special dish is also made just for the guest of honor along with a handful of welcoming gifts. ----- The Naming of a Resident : As the number of residents started to grow and the hatching celebrations began Shiho decided it would be best to change how the hatchlings are given their names. Instead of telling them their name in private the hatchlings are now given their names at the beginning of the celebrations. When Shiho arrives with the newest resident they are placed upon the stage for all others to see. It is here that they are given an introduction not of who they are, but rather who they shall become. Though not all introductions may seem kind to some, sometimes painting the hatchling as trouble, not a single resident can argue that Shiho's words do not hold true in the end. At the end Shiho will then give them their name, an action that welcomes them into the retreat and begins the celebration. ----- The Death of a Resident : Though deaths seem to rarely occur here, a farewell ceremony is held for those who pass on. These are often held a couple of days after, giving those closest to them time to say their own farewells in private. Once they have had their time to mourn the deceased will be placed inside a coffin made of magic infused ice that may never melt and preserves the body. Flowers of all kinds are often placed inside along with any cherished belongings of the deceased. The ceremony takes place at the Frigid Floes where Shiho and those who wish to partake travel. Upon arrival the group will begin the ceremony by gathering around the coffin and speaking a few words each for the deceased. When all have spoken the coffin will be carefully placed on a piece of ice along with four torches, one at each corner. The torches are then lit and the ice chunk gently pushed away from the land. The heat from the torches slowly melts the ice, sending the coffin into the chilling sea. At the bottom of the sea is where they will rest, undisturbed by others who are kept away by the freezing waters. ----- Mating Proposals : ----- Anniversaries : ----- Hatchdays : Education : ----- Occupations : While residents are welcome to take up different occupations both in and outside of the retreat they are by no means a requirement to live here. Any and all residents currently working have decided to do so on their own. Of course taking up an occupation comes with benefits that are not available to those who choose the luxury, non-working, life. Those who take outside occupations get the benefit of earning their own treasure that they are free to spend however they wish (Shiho does not believe in taking what others have rightfully earned themselves). Some of these residents have however chosen on their own to give a portion of their income to the retreat in order to get the benefits that are available to those who take on retreat occupations. Residents who take on occupations that help out around the retreat (Such as cooks, bartenders, and security) get a few special benefits alongside a small, but decent amount of treasure. - Can put in requests for specific/personal meals and snacks - Can have up to 3 servings of food per meal (The usual being 2) - Can put in requests for a private bathing hour 5 times a month Now some may wonder how the retreat manages to make enough money to survive and prosper with such a system. The answer is simple, many residents who have chosen the non-working life still help contribute to the retreat through wolf pelt collecting. With the abundance of black and winter wolves around the retreat it takes little effort for a skilled dragon to hunt and collect a nice pile of pelts to give to the retreat for selling. Most have come to see that without this Shiho would not be able to provide them with the relaxed life they live and figure that a few hours a week of hunting is nothing compared to working a full job. ----- Hobbies : ----- Familiars : Residents are only allowed to have personal familiars as companions and voluntary helpers. Familiars are seen by Shiho as fellow denizens of Sornieth and therefore any resident who is caught treating their familiar poorly will loose that familiar. Familiars taken from residents are free to leave or continue living within the retreat. Although Shiho can't control how outsiders treat their own familiars, any visitor who is caught mistreating their familiar will be forced to leave immediately. Their return is something that the meat eaters like to celebrate as most have found their meat to be absolutely mouthwatering. It is for this reason that the annual Great Turkey Hunt has been established as an unofficial celebration/competition by the residents. Those who can fight and hunt compete with one another to see who can bring back the most turkeys before they disappear. The winner merely gets bragging rights for the entire year until the next competition, but many seem to be more than satisfied with this. The competition not only gives the residents something fun to look forward to, but also helps the retreat to stock up on meat for the months to come.

Education :

Occupations : While residents are welcome to take up different occupations both in and outside of the retreat they are by no means a requirement to live here.

- Can put in requests for specific/personal meals and snacks
- Can have up to 3 servings of food per meal (The usual being 2)
- Can put in requests for a private bathing hour 5 times a month

Now some may wonder how the retreat manages to make enough money to survive and prosper with such a system.

Hobbies :

Familiars : Residents are only allowed to have personal familiars as companions and voluntary helpers.

Elemental Holidays :

Sunset Watching :

The Great Turkey Hunt : Once a year for a short period of time the boreal wood is suddenly overrun by woodland turkeys for reasons unknown to the retreat.

With a rather limited supply of local food the retreat was quick to think up a solution that would guarantee food year round. This solution was the greenhouse, a building designed for plant life of all kinds. With the ability to grow their own plants also came the ability to house insects and animals of the rather small variety.

Soon came another concern however. While the greenhouse provided most with all the food they needed, those who preferred, and could only eat, seafood were left with the scarce amount that their homeland provided. Thankfully this problem too was quickly cleared away with the addition of the swimming pool, a body of water that provided the retreat with a place to house its own water based critters.

The greenhouse is one of the retreat's proudest accomplishments and is carefully looked after by many of the residents. Some have even added their own plants to this ever growing garden of life.

The Blooming Garden
A garden filled with an abundance of colorful flowers both wonderful in appearance and in flavor. Some residents like to occasionally pick a few as gifts to give to friends and loved ones.

The Orchard
A rather small orchard that contains a small variety of fruit trees. In order to fit these trees within the greenhouse their seeds have been embedded with magic that keeps the trees miniature in size. The only downside to this is that the fruit itself seems to grow smaller as well.

The Scattered Variety
With no other way to separate the remaining plants residents have simply taken to planting non-flowers and trees wherever they deem appropriate. Whether this means a spot that helps the plant grow better or simply a spot where it looks pretty is up to the resident who's doing the planting.

The Small Critters and Creepy Crawlies
Due to the lack of proper space only a small handful of critters can be found living within the greenhouse. Luckily for the retreat these small critters are able to grow in population rather quickly. The same can be said for the insect population as well.

The Water Fiends
Though small in variety now, the retreat hopes to add even more water based critters to the swimming pool in the future. For now the seafood loving residents are content with what's available (Along with the occasional supply of seafood that Shiho buys).

icemid.png

The Clinic Supplies
The greenhouse clinic stores a variety of natural herbs and medicines to use in aiding the sick and injured. You may even find supplies here that help with non medical problems such as glow in the dark materials to help one who is afraid of the dark.

icemid.png

The Local Food
Though not much, the Cloudscrape Crags offers another supply of food that can be hunted and scavenged by the retreat's more determined residents.
