You might have heard rumors of this already. You may even have a dragon in your lair that's Shade-touched. I hope they can deal with it, I truly do; I have heard many sad stories of those who are taken over completely or who end up hurting those nearest them, because of what they carry inside of them. My parents were Shade-touched, and something more: they came from a clan that worshipped the Shade. Or maybe it was a cult....

I don't know how they got into it, and I can't ask; they are long dead. But what I do know is that they wanted to get out. They fled to the Sunbeam Ruins, the domain of Light, getting as far away from the Shade as they could. They should've known that the Shade is everywhere, large enough to cover the world, but I suppose they were desperate....

I was birthed here, in the Sunbeam Ruins. I have been told by other clans that I look very much like a representative of the Light flight. I hope it was a great comfort to my parents. They remained Shade-touched for the rest of their lives, or at least I'm sure my father did. My mother left when I was very young -- I can't remember exactly when. My father told me she could no longer stay with us. She may simply have given up and returned to the cult...or she may have been unable to resist the Shade's influence. It's painful to think about, but she may also have accompanied my father and then had me just as an excuse to leave the cult. Perhaps she still went back to them...Perhaps not. I don't know. She may have gone away to protect us....It's possible. I think it's possible.

The eyes of my father were completely black, for he was Shade-touched. It made approaching other dragons difficult. We often had to travel at night, and we never stayed in one place for too long. You'll have to forgive my lack of social graces; I couldn't socialize well when I was a child. (My clanmates are helping me learn, though.)

My father passed away shortly before I reached adulthood. I don't know if his being Shade-touched had anything to do with it. He was groggy and lethargic for a long time, and frequently he mumbled things that didn't really make sense. But there are some things that stick out.

He said to me that I should stay here, in the Sunbeam Ruins. Whatever differences he and my mother might've had, they'd chosen this place as their final home, even if they couldn't stay here long.

The Sunbeam Ruins has many ancient artifacts, and my parents had picked up a few on their travels. My father had lifted a word from them: Veritas. He gave it to me as my name; shortly before he died, he told me it meant "truth". I asked him why he had chosen it as my name.

By then, he had told me where he and my mother had come from, and I understood why they had decided to get away. The Shade is a monster that will devour us all, whether we worship it or not. He and my mother had learned this the hard way. "You will spread the truth on our behalf," he told me, right before he died.

...You've noticed my parents' names are not written down. You've got my father to thank for that; he made me promise not to tell. There are some things in the past that we shouldn't dig up, not if we have to focus on what's ahead of us.

{ You ask Veritas about the meaning and significance of the clan's name. }
"The Disillusionists? Hmm, I'd better explain the meaning first. An illusionist is a magician who creates illusions. So a disillusionist would be one who dispels illusions. It's simple, really.
As to the significance of the name...
My father's words hit me hard. Dispel illusions, seek knowledge...Spread the truth, but not just about the Shade. Those touched by it may not necessarily support it....
My clan might not survive long, but we can send out our members, let them help others in the fight against the Shade. That'll be something to be proud of. No matter where my parents came from, they had me here. And I will live and die as a dragon of the Light Flight.

...Now, I've kept you here long enough. Thanks for visiting us. Perhaps we'll stop by your lair, too. I wish you and your clan luck in your fight against the Shade."

It had been long ago, so very long ago....He had forgotten his parents, their names. It got a bit lonely sometimes. It was an awful feeling, not knowing where you were going, and not remembering a home to go back to.... But there was always one constant: "I am a Guardian." He was a Guardian Dragon, and he was on his Search. That was the one thing that drove him on, even when there was darkness before and behind him. "You can't see where you're going, but you shouldn't despair. It only means you haven't yet gotten where you're supposed to be. So you must keep going, keep going..." One paw after the other... "...until you find a light." It was just after midnight, in deepest darkness. It started to rain. Nacht found a low ridge of rock and hunkered down on its leeward side. The rain rolled off his scales. He heard a crashing noise. For a moment, he thought it was thunder, but there had been no lightning. His golden eyes narrowed, and he peered into the darkness. Another crash -- the sound of a falling tree. Something pale moved in the gloom. Nacht stood up, and he followed the noise. Another dragon -- this one was pale, so pale, they glowed. At least that was what it looked like to him. He had to squint; whoever they were, they seemed awfully bright. "Hello...?" he called out. It was the first time in many days he'd spoken. His voice was soft and husky from disuse. Another tree fell down, and now he faced the dragon fully. "Oy!" she grunted back. She was a female Guardian, and she didn't seem surprised to see him there. Nacht wondered if she had seen him approaching. She continued, "I wasn't expecting to find anyone here. Beastly weather we're having right now. Is this your lair?" She half-turned, pointing with her nose. Nacht raised his head and behind her, he saw the looming darkness of an old edifice. There were places like this scattered all around Sornieth, huge, crumbling places of stone, all but overgrown by plant life. They were prized as lairs. But this was the first time he'd been here, and he said so: "I am a stranger to this land." The dragon's frills went up. Her eyes warmed. "Well, so am I, friend. The place looks free....We might as well go inside and get dry." "Umm," Nacht mumbled. He could see that the entrance was blocked by several stones and fallen trees. The other Guardian nodded in agreement. "Yeah, we'll have to do some housekeeping first. But you're a strong-looking fellow; you can handle it, I'm sure -- and with me helping you, we'll finish the job in no time. Are you ready?" "Housekeeping" was the last thing Nacht wanted to do. He'd slept in the open many, many times already, and right now, with his muscles sore from walking for hours, he just wanted to curl up and sleep. But he couldn't say that. It didn't feel right. The female Guardian craned her neck slightly, waiting for his response. "Yes, all right," he answered. "Let's give it a try." The rain slackened but didn't stop. Bits of moonlight occasionally shone through the trees. Nacht, already safe and warm inside the old building, peered out in wonder. Where the moon shone, shadows turned to velvet, and the raindrops shone like diamonds. "The world is beautiful at night," he murmured. "Yes," said the other Guardian, "it is." She had introduced herself as Veritas, and she now curled up near Nacht. She looked at the world as if seeing it for the first time, and then she looked at Nacht as he yawned. "How did you find this place?" "I saw your light." "My...light?" Veritas was confused. Like most dragons, she could see well enough on a moonlit night like this, and she had carried no lanterns. Nacht grew flustered as he realized what he'd just said, and he stammered, "It's just...It was raining outside, but you were so bright...so I...er..." He broke off as Veritas chuckled. It was a low, rumbling laugh deep in her chest, and under different circumstances, he might've joined in. As it was, he was simply mortified. (And in the back of his mind, a voice coaxed him, "Keep going, keep going...until...you find...") Veritas kindly didn't follow up on his words. Instead, she asked him, "You're traveling, aren't you? On a Search?" He affirmed this, and he asked her if she was on a Search, too. "I don't know," Veritas answered honestly. The tip of her tail twitched. "I haven't found a place to stay yet, so I guess that I am. Still on a Search, I mean." "How did you come here?" Nacht asked. His voice was stronger now, smoother. It was the most he'd talked in several days, perhaps weeks. He knew there were several thriving lairs nearby, but he'd kept to himself most of the time. The few travelers he'd met on the way here had also been close-mouthed, unwilling to start conversations. But Veritas liked to talk...and talk...and talk. She talked about how she'd come to the forest just a few days ago and had wandered around, dawdled really, just enjoying the sunlight and the flowers that grew here. Lots of white flowers -- she nodded to a patch outside the building. The tiny white blossoms glowed in the night. And then the rain had arrived and she'd had to find a place to stay but hadn't felt like approaching any of the lairs...and now, here was Nacht. Nachtstreiter yawned and laid his chin down on his paws. Veritas seemed to notice his exhaustion for the first time. "You've come a long way, haven't you? I had better let you sleep. Oh...It's starting to rain again. I don't like it. When will it ever let up?" Nacht finally slept, lulled by the rain -- and, to a much smaller degree, by Veritas' quieter chattering. It rained on and off for the next few days, so they mostly stayed inside the old building, commenting idly on the weather, exchanging stories about their travels, their Searches. Unlike Nachtstreiter, Veritas, it seemed, could and would talk about anything: the dragons she'd met, the old ruins she'd explored, the animals and plants all around. "This is a good place!" she crowed one day, her words punctuated by a clap of thunder. "Lots of space for many dragons, and a forest and stream just outside, perfect for gathering! A clan could grow nicely here one day." Nachtstreiter grunted noncommitally. Clans were for Guardians who'd put down roots, and Guardians who'd put down roots were ones who'd already finished their Searches and found their charges. No charges, no stopping at one place, and therefore, no clan. Not for him. Not yet, anyway. Still, just to be polite, he queried, "You'd like to start a clan someday?" Veritas stared at him for a heartbeat, and then she shrugged, her wings rising and falling. "Ah...What a question! Well. I've never thought about it. No Guardian ever does, I guess....Maybe someday I'll start one." "Or join one, more likely," Nacht agreed. The conversation came to a natural end, and he went back to watching the rain, waiting for it to stop. Behind him, he heard the click and scrape of claws as Veritas continued poking around the place. Four days after they'd first met, the rain stopped and the sun came out. Veritas seemed disappointed to hear Nacht would be moving on, but she took it in stride. She was on a Search, too; she knew how it went.... Or at least, she had. "I think I have found my charge," she murmured. She lifted her pale head, and her eyes shone in the gloom of the old building. It seemed to wrap itself around her, its arches curving inward like petals around a flower's heart. "This old building? There are worse places to defend," Nacht agreed. She did seem right at home already. "You take care of yourself, Nat...streiter? Goodness, I've been calling you 'Nat' this entire time; it's a lot easier to pronounce." "It's Nacht." With a rough K sound in the middle. Still: "Nat is also fine." "Yes, you certainly are, and I hope you will be." Veritas stepped close. She gave him a gentle headbutt. "I wish you luck and safety in your Search. If you're ever in the vicinity, come by and see me again. Who knows, maybe I really will have started a clan by then." Nachtstreiter took his leave of her. He left her standing in the doorway, a lone light in the gathering gloom. Not long after he left, it started to rain again. Nacht traveled quickly. His few days' rest had given him more strength and energy, and he made good time as he strode through the sodden trees. Squish, squish...Water squirted up between his toes. It felt good at first, but after some hours, he started to feel cold. He paused beneath a rock overhang as rain sluiced down on either side of him. He cleaned his claws, stretched out his cramped wings. He stayed there for a long moment, hearing nothing but the rain. It was a grim and lonely sound. He managed to shut it out, and he turned his thoughts inward, to what he was looking for. It was an idea he thought about deeply, over and over again, even when the rain slackened and he moved on. Even when the rain finally stopped and the sun shone again, this time for good.
What sort of dragons might a Guardian take as their charge? There are no criteria. ~ Tomo's Trivia Tablet
He found the elk a few nights later. He spooked the local wolf pack as, completely without meaning to, he walked into them and their dinner. They bared their teeth at him, but he stamped his feet and lashed his tail a few times, and they took the hint and bounded off. They left behind their prey, a lone elk, already abandoned by its herd. It bellowed in panic and tried to drag itself away on three legs. An elk was normally a tasty meal, but Nacht decided he wasn't hungry then. He ignored the elk's kicking and bleating as he wrapped his paws around its barrel. After several beats of his wings, he managed to lift the struggling animal into the air. The old edifice was where he'd left it. The weathered stones gleamed in the moonlight. Nacht banked, flared his wings, and thudded down onto the ground. The elk screamed in terror. Veritas came charging out of the lair, a mass of whiteness and fury. Her claws dug deep furrows into the ground as she screeched to a halt. "Oh. It's you!" "I came back," Nachtstreiter said. It sounded dumb even to him. To cover up his awkwardness, he held up the elk. "Can you help me with this?" "It's still alive." "I'm not going to eat it," Nacht admitted, lowering his head sheepishly. Veritas cocked an eyeridge at him, but said nothing more. She led him back inside. At the back of the building was a half-crumbled floor leading down to a wide, deep pool. There, they bathed the elk -- it kicked and slashed at them with its antlers, but they didn't feel it through their tough hides. Nacht produced his travel supplies, including bandages, which he used to patch the elk's injuries up. It would probably limp for the rest of its life, but it would live. He tied it to a nearby column and it stood there, quivering, watching them with huge, dark eyes. "We're going to have a devil of a time taking care of that thing," Veritas said. Before Nacht could apologize, she tossed her head and grinned. "Eh, we can do it." "We can?" And, feeling her eyes on him, Nacht hunched down again. "Oh...Yes. Yes, well, of course we can. We make a good team." "That we do. And before you go running off again, I ought to say that you can stay here for a few days. Give your pet time to rest before...I don't know, cutting it loose." Cutting loose. A Guardian on a Search was like a kite without a string. Batting about on the wind, going here and there, before luck or happenstance blew them into a tree. Something that had already put roots down. And they could stay in the tree, or ride upon the wind again.... "I've been thinking." "That's always a good thing. What do you have in mind?" "Is it possible for two Guardians to have the same charge? To take responsibility for the same thing, and then work together to care for it? I think..." He trailed off. He wasn't sure what he wanted to say. But Veritas understood, and she coaxed him, "You think this building might be our charge?" "Umm..." Nachtstreiter hesitated. He looked at the old, dim building, vaulted arches rising high, the weathered walls standing strong and waiting...waiting...for what? "For someone to live here, because this was a place of life once," he realized. He could read it in the place's location, in the trees and the flowers outside. This was a place to be lived in. And Veritas had gotten here first. He looked at Veritas, the white Guardian standing in the gloom, and he bowed his head again -- in deep respect this time. "Yes -- if you will have me with you." "Huh. That's a...Well, it's certainly a pleasant surprise. Um..." It was the first time Nacht had heard her make that sound. "Why don't we talk it over, Nachtstreiter?" "Yes. Certainly." Nacht looked outside. The night was clear, and moonlight shone strong. It was no longer raining, and it wouldn't rain again for many weeks yet. But this time, he stayed. Keep going, keep going, until you find a light.... His Search had come to an end, but the rest of his life was only just beginning. At least he wouldn't have to face it alone. Not anymore. It has been many moons since then. Nachtstreiter and Veritas are now a mated pair, with three grown children of their own. The children haven't left the lair yet, but Nachtstreiter doesn't mind. He likes having his family near him. He has made a lot of friends -- even the elk he and Veritas rescued has stayed on. His name is Rowland, and he walks with a permanent limp, but he has learned not to fear the dragons around him -- and there are many dragons around him now. They are all Nachtstreiter's and Veritas' friends -- representatives from other lairs, workers from various industries, dragons from all walks of life. Together, they have joined ranks to create a clan, the Disillusionists. They have cleared away much of the surrounding trees to make room, but the forest still surrounds them, and the stream still runs clear. There is more than enough to sustain them all. Veritas takes charge of most things, as she did all those years ago when she tasked Nacht with helping her clear away the debris that blocked their lair. She is a bit heavy-handed, but is capable and has a good heart. Nachtstreiter loves her deeply, and she in turn treats him with great respect and affection. She hopes he will be assertive enough to become a true second-in-command, a role for which their friend, Polosim, is grooming Nachtstreiter. Nacht feels that he isn't the leading type, but he trains with a will. He wants to do his best for his family and friends in all things. It may be that he doesn't feel like a leader because he believes he lacks diplomatic skills. What he does have confidence in are his combat skills, which served him well on his travels and help him provide for his family to this day. Together with his mate, he has trained exaltees, and their clan is in good standing now. They get along well with their neighbors. Although sometimes... It's dusk. Nachtstreiter is in his den when he gets word that there is an intruder, one who has been deemed hostile. The sentry on duty tells him that his presence is needed, should the encounter come down to a fight. Nacht stands up straight and flares his wings, and he stalks out into the golden afternoon. It's another Guardian, as bright as Nachtstreiter is dark. He is young and arrogant, and he's not backing down. Nachtstreiter shakes his head -- "Children these days." -- and wonders if he's getting old. He pushes the thought out of his mind. He flexes his claws and stamps his feet, and he prepares to defend his lair. His clan. His family. His charge. ~ The End ----- PREV. Dragon | Contents • Characters A-M N-Z • Stories Pt. 1 | NEXT Dragon

So you must keep going, keep going..."

One paw after the other...

"...until you find a light."

It was just after midnight, in deepest darkness.

Is this your lair?"

She half-turned, pointing with her nose. Nacht raised his head and behind her, he saw the looming darkness of an old edifice. There were places like this scattered all around Sornieth, huge, crumbling places of stone, all but overgrown by plant life. They were prized as lairs. But this was the first time he'd been here, and he said so: "I am a stranger to this land."

The dragon's frills went up. Her eyes warmed. "Well, so am I, friend. The place looks free....We might as well go inside and get dry."

"Umm," Nacht mumbled.

Are you ready?"

"Housekeeping" was the last thing Nacht wanted to do. He'd slept in the open many, many times already, and right now, with his muscles sore from walking for hours, he just wanted to curl up and sleep. But he couldn't say that. It didn't feel right. The female Guardian craned her neck slightly, waiting for his response.

"Yes, all right," he answered. "Let's give it a try."

2-light.png
The rain slackened but didn't stop. Bits of moonlight occasionally shone through the trees. Nacht, already safe and warm inside the old building, peered out in wonder. Where the moon shone, shadows turned to velvet, and the raindrops shone like diamonds. "The world is beautiful at night," he murmured.

"Yes," said the other Guardian, "it is." She had introduced herself as
Veritas, and she now curled up near Nacht. She looked at the world as if seeing it for the first time, and then she looked at Nacht as he yawned. "How did you find this place?"

"I saw your light."

"My...light?" Veritas was confused. Like most dragons, she could see well enough on a moonlit night like this, and she had carried no lanterns. Nacht grew flustered as he realized what he'd just said, and he stammered, "It's just...It was raining outside, but you were so bright...so I...er..."

He broke off as Veritas chuckled. It was a low, rumbling laugh deep in her chest, and under different circumstances, he might've joined in. As it was, he was simply mortified.

(And in the back of his mind, a voice coaxed him, "Keep going, keep going...until...you find...")

Veritas kindly didn't follow up on his words. Instead, she asked him, "You're traveling, aren't you? On a Search?"

He affirmed this, and he asked her if she was on a Search, too.

"I don't know," Veritas answered honestly. The tip of her tail twitched. "I haven't found a place to stay yet, so I guess that I am. Still on a Search, I mean."

"How did you come here?" Nacht asked.

When will it ever let up?"

Nacht finally slept, lulled by the rain -- and, to a much smaller degree, by Veritas' quieter chattering. A clan could grow nicely here one day."

Nachtstreiter grunted noncommitally. Clans were for Guardians who'd put down roots, and Guardians who'd put down roots were ones who'd already finished their Searches and found their charges. No charges, no stopping at one place, and therefore, no clan. Not for him. Not yet, anyway.

Still, just to be polite, he queried, "You'd like to start a clan someday?"

Veritas stared at him for a heartbeat, and then she shrugged, her wings rising and falling. "Ah...What a question! Well. I've never thought about it. No Guardian ever does, I guess....Maybe someday I'll start one."

"Or join one, more likely," Nacht agreed.

Goodness, I've been calling you 'Nat' this entire time; it's a lot easier to pronounce."

"It's Nacht." With a rough K sound in the middle. Still: "Nat is also fine."

"Yes, you certainly are, and I hope you will be." Veritas stepped close. She gave him a gentle headbutt. "I wish you luck and safety in your Search. If you're ever in the vicinity, come by and see me again. Who knows, maybe I really will have started a clan by then."

Nachtstreiter took his leave of her. He left her standing in the doorway, a lone light in the gathering gloom. Not long after he left, it started to rain again.

2-light.png

"Oh. It's you!"

"I came back," Nachtstreiter said. It sounded dumb even to him. To cover up his awkwardness, he held up the elk. "Can you help me with this?"

"It's still alive."

"I'm not going to eat it," Nacht admitted, lowering his head sheepishly.

"Eh, we can do it."

"We can?" And, feeling her eyes on him, Nacht hunched down again. "Oh...Yes. Yes, well, of course we can. We make a good team."

"That we do. And before you go running off again, I ought to say that you can stay here for a few days. Give your pet time to rest before...I don't know, cutting it loose."

Cutting loose. A Guardian on a Search was like a kite without a string. Batting about on the wind, going here and there, before luck or happenstance blew them into a tree. Something that had already put roots down. And they could stay in the tree, or ride upon the wind again.... "I've been thinking."

"That's always a good thing. What do you have in mind?"

"Is it possible for two Guardians to have the same charge? To take responsibility for the same thing, and then work together to care for it? I think..." He trailed off. He wasn't sure what he wanted to say.

But Veritas understood, and she coaxed him, "You think this building might be our charge?"

"Umm..." Nachtstreiter hesitated.

"Yes -- if you will have me with you."

"Huh. That's a...Well, it's certainly a pleasant surprise. Um..." It was the first time Nacht had heard her make that sound. "Why don't we talk it over, Nachtstreiter?"

"Yes.

2-light.png

She hopes he will be assertive enough to become a true second-in-command, a role for which their friend,
Polosim, is grooming Nachtstreiter.

His clan. His family. His charge.

With a scrape of one huge paw, he sent them thudding and clacking away into the darkness. His companion descended behind him a bit more gracefully. As the two of them stood blinking in the gloom, letting their eyes adjust, Rhian's nostrils flared. "I smell water." They could now hear it: a faint lapping noise, all but obscured by the scrape and whine of toiling dragons' claws. Above them, their other three lairmates were working to expand their home. Perhaps in time, this collection of rocky ground and crags would be home to a mighty clan....But for now, it was just the three of them. "I'll go check if the walls are sound. You ought to investigate that water. It might be useful." And with that, Rhian slunk away, her tail waving slowly. She blended seamlessly into the shadows; the only way Regius could tell for certain where she was was by looking for her eyes. Fire-orange eyes, shining like brilliant points of flame. He moved forward. Some meters away from the slope of tumbled rocks, the light ended, and shadows roofed his head. But his eyes had adjusted enough now. He was standing at the edge of a long, deep pool. It was odd, and clearly not natural: it looked as though someone had cut an enormous block of stone out of the floor and then filled the space up with icy water. The pool stretched into the blackness. Regius looked to the left. He could see Rhian's head bobbing as she tapped the walls with her claws, tested them with her shoulders or tail. Like it or not, he had a responsibility, too. Icy water closed over him as he submerged, but he didn't feel the cold. Ice dragons generally didn't. The pool wasn't deep enough to close over his head, and he walked easily along the bottom. It sloped a bit as he moved forward. He could hear a distant trickling noise now -- the water was flowing in from somewhere. Or perhaps it was flowing out.... It came from a great crack in the far wall. Regius felt twisted pipes, long broken by the force of some great earthquake. Icy water gushed into the pool. It stank -- not of stale air, not even of algae or fish. No, this water smelled of steel, and there was something else...like the air just before rain.... As he turned to investigate further, something brushed against his shoulder. He squinted, trying to see what it was, even as Rhian called out to him, "Regius, I've finished here. Everything looks sound. How are things on your end?" "We have fresh water," he reported. He bumped into the thing again, poked it with his tail. "It's coming from pipes in the wall." "Is it potable?" "It stinks. I don't like how it smells." Rhian let out a snort of gentle contempt. "I'd look, but it's much too cold for me. Ah...I'll let the terraformer know about it. He'll be interested, and he can have a look for himself." And then she went away. She appeared in the shaft of light leading down from above, startlingly black against the brightness, and she lifted herself easily and climbed out of the mattamore. Regius was left in the cool underground, and now he felt around with his forepaws. He was standing next to a chest. A great box of steel, crackling with energy...literally crackling. Regius yelped as it stung him. He snatched his paw back, put it in his mouth. The water was cool and clean, but it still had that weird taste. "Ozone," he realized then. "It smells like a thunderstorm." It took some doing, hauling the chest out of the water by himself. He pushed it to the side of the pool and managed to heave it onto the stone floor. It slammed down with a solid clank. Regius waited, glancing back to see if anybody had heard. Nobody was there, but it wouldn't be long until Rhian came back with the clan architect. In the meantime, the chest was worth investigating. It crackled underneath his paws, currents of energy writhing up the sides. Had the light been any better, Regius would have noticed the cracks snaking through the metal and the ominous black sheen spreading out from them....But he didn't. He couldn't pry the lid open, and so he decided to break it. He stepped back, giving himself room, and slammed down his tail in a single massive blow. The chest blasted open, grimy pieces falling away and splashing into the pool. Its contents were quite different: long pieces of gleaming metal, polished almost to a mirror shine. Regius bent over them curiously. He poked one of them with a talon and then pressed a paw to the surface. It was warm. In that instant, bright white lights flared along the metal pieces. Regius, bathed in the sudden brilliance, turned away. For a moment, he saw the fully-illuminated cavern: tiers of platforms set along the walls, the clear spaces of which had been decorated with figures. Strange beings...two arms, two legs, and no wings. A stray thought drifted into Regius' mind: Long ago when the world was young... Something tremendous slammed into his back, bearing him to the stone floor. The light grew brighter and brighter....It would have blinded him, he felt, if he had not lost consciousness then. A cold, invisible hand seemed to close suddenly around him, driving the breath from his body. For several moments, he knew nothing, felt nothing. He drifted back into wakefulness, like a fish rising gently to the light. He was drawn from the darkness by whispers, snatches of song. Long ago when the world was young... ...a new age, they said. Welcome to the new age... ...it was a tough competition, but I am glad to be here... Competitors! To your places... It will be the power that supports the world-- --if it doesn't annihilate it first. The world around him exploded into noise: someone was crashing down, plunging through the water that'd closed over Regius' head. Startled, he took a deep breath and inhaled -- and he was being dragged up, water pouring from his throat, his lungs. He was set on the stone floor and Polosim, the architect, was about to give him a smack on the back when he and Rhian noticed something. The pieces of metal that had flown from the chest no longer lay on the floor. They had leaped up, crackling with electricity and light, and sunk themselves deep into Regius' back. Polosim instinctively tried to pry them off, but Regius reacted with a yell of pain, and so he desisted. While Rhian and the architect babbled to Regius, asking him to tell them what'd gone wrong, he looked around. The world seemed wreathed in white light, but only at the edges of his vision. He could see the paintings on the walls, and he could hear...If paintings had voices, then he could hear them now. They drifted through his mind like bubbles through the waves. Regius himself deigned to stay in the underground cavern, where the world was not so bright, and where the whispers of the past were at their most soothing. He sank into the dark waters, sleeping soundly and deeply. Only the orbs glowing upon his body, and the occasional stray bubble, showed where he was. With their lairmates so busy with making the place habitable, it was Rhian who stepped up to care for Regius. She nursed him through his exhaustion, and coaxed him to eat when all he wanted to do was sleep. Regius had to admit that he did miss the sun and having other dragons to talk to, but with Rhian around, things weren't so bad....She had her reasons, too, for staying with him in their cool and dark underworld. By the time the clan was established, they were a mated pair. Occasionally a curious visitor would be ushered into the darkness. They would be guided to the edge of the pool, where with a gurgling rumble Regius would raise himself, sending water crashing in waves against the stone floor. The more timid visitors would try to flee at this point, scrambling back over untidy piles of stone, while Regius would blink at them in consternation. "What? You're here for the art, aren't you? Hydrone Chest
.. when he opened the box...

Regius cleared away a pile of tumbled rocks. With a scrape of one huge paw, he sent them thudding and clacking away into the darkness. His companion descended behind him a bit more gracefully. As the two of them stood blinking in the gloom, letting their eyes adjust, Rhian's nostrils flared. "I smell water."

They could now hear it: a faint lapping noise, all but obscured by the scrape and whine of toiling dragons' claws.

How are things on your end?"

"We have fresh water," he reported. He bumped into the thing again, poked it with his tail. "It's coming from pipes in the wall."

"Is it potable?"

"It stinks. I don't like how it smells."

Rhian let out a snort of gentle contempt.

"It smells like a thunderstorm."

It took some doing, hauling the chest out of the water by himself.

It will be the power that supports the world--

--if it doesn't annihilate it first.

If he concentrated, he could pick out a phrase here, a word there, as if he were walking through a crowd. The white bulbs along his length glowed in response.

Polosim went looking for the pieces of the metal chest. He picked up some of them, but the potent magic that'd charged them had gone, and they were nothing more than dead lumps of steel now.

The clan grew, as Regius had guessed it would. More dragons joined them, and Polosim was kept busy, widening the hallways and rooms of the lair. Regius himself deigned to stay in the underground cavern, where the world was not so bright, and where the whispers of the past were at their most soothing. "What? You're here for the art, aren't you? Or maybe it's the lore. What's it going to be, then -- lore or art?"
