I've finally begun to consolidate my clan lore into one place. This thread contains information about the residents, lair, customs, and relationships of the Suncircle Clan, as well as lore entries chronicling the clan's history from its inception all the way to the present.

Feel free to chat in the thread itself and comment on my lore. If you'd like to be added to a pinglist for lore updates, PM me or ping me in the thread and I will add you. I also partake in small RP letter exchanges from time to time, so if you'd like to strike up a conversation between one of my dragons and one of yours, I'd be happy to do so. Any dragon with a bio is fair game for a letter exchange.

ALFUDhf.png

The Suncircle Clan is located on a mesa at the edge of the Lightning Farm, in the northern part near Light territory. Some of the lair is located aboveground, but the majority is subterranean, dug into the mesa itself. There is a small oasis at the foot of the mesa, fed by stolen water from the Light river.

The clan is full of capable warriors who defend it from attack by beastclan and dragon alike. A thriving trade outpost, run by Devara and her team of merchants, has its claws sunk into much of the area's commerce, gathering resources for the clan while also strengthening alliances.

The dragons of the clan are more minimalist in their technology use than many Lightning clans; while they have technology and use it for their large projects, most of their engineering feats are for the personal use of injured and otherwise disabled clanmates. The pioneering work of Arctos in the field of bio-augmentation has helped to improve the quality of life for many of the clan's dragons, some of whom are refugees fleeing from the destruction of their former homes.

The clan leader, Excursio, has a Charge to share the lovely sunset view from the mesa with all who pass through the area. She is extremely focused on maintaining her clan's physical location, but also focuses on encouraging community and relationships.

While she keeps her clan's secrets hidden, she is still hospitable to newcomers and will gladly provide traveling dragons with shelter. In light of promoting inclusiveness, the clan has many allies in other flights, and their messengers and ambassadors regularly visit them to gather news and strengthen inter-clan ties. Their warriors will also travel and fight for clans that they have befriended.

The Lair

Located near the border between Lightning and Light territory, the lair of the Suncircle Clan is organized in a way that emphasizes functionality and comfort while still allowing the lair to be easily defended. The lair is dug into the heart of a large mesa and consists of five levels, connected to each other by a pair of vertical shafts. Dragons move from one level to the other using the shafts; travel from the depths to the surface is done via one shaft, while travel from the surface down to the lower levels is done via the other.

Only the Suncircle's most trusted allies are allowed into the heart of the clan. The deeper you go into the bowels of the mesa, the more secrets you will find concealed - but if you're trespassing, prepare to find yourself challenged by the clan's warriors.

ALFUDhf.png

The Surface

The surface of the mesa is where much of ordinary clan life takes place. Home to a bustling trade marketplace, several laboratories, and living quarters for visitors, this part of the Suncircle is hospitable and open to all. Ceremonies and entertainment are available for all to partake in, and many dragons who live elsewhere in the mesa come to the surface during the day to enjoy the lively atmosphere.
  • The Keep: The tallest building on the mesa, the Keep is often the first thing that visitors to the clan notice when they arrive. This sturdy, fortified square tower sits directly over the entrance to the lower levels of the clan. It serves as protection from the rain, preventing the lower levels from flooding in the rare-but-unpredictable rainstorms of the Shifting Expanse, and doubles as an extra layer of defense against unauthorized intruders. A rotating shift of patrol guards lives in the Keep, and is tasked with defending it from attackers as well as settling any disputes that arise on the surface of the mesa.
  • The Astronomy Tower: Located on top of the Keep, the Astronomy Tower is home to Pulchrior, the clan's astronomer as well as one of its oldest and most distinguished residents. Several junior astronomers assist Pulchrior in maintaining his records and star maps.
  • The Marketplace: A bustling hub of trade and commerce, the Suncircle's marketplace is overseen by Devara, a Coatl merchant and jeweler who takes fierce pride in the goods that pass through her corner of the world. Small shops sell a wide assortment of goods, ranging from basic foodstuffs and survival gear to precious metals, gems, and other curiosities. On the outskirts of the market, traveling merchants peddle their wares at smaller temporary booths.
  • The Forge: The clan's blacksmith, Corundum, rules over the forge with an iron fist. She is responsible for making and repairing the armor and weapons of the Suncircle's warriors, a task that she carries out with diligence. While she is a capable worker, she refuses to take apprentices, and the large warrior population of the Suncircle Clan means she always has plenty of work to do.
  • The Broken Arch: A small performance venue located on the far side of the marketplace, the Broken Arch is named after the stone arch that curves above its entrance. It used to be intact, but was partially shattered in a lightning storm. The venue is home to a variety of small performances, mostly musicians, and performers who are passing through are encouraged to share their talents here.
  • Guest Quarters: A small number of guest lodgings are available for dragons visiting the clan overnight. Sparsely furnished but comfortable, the rooms are generally offered to visiting merchants and diplomats for a modest fee, although the fee is often waived for dragons who have interesting news to share.
  • The Alchemy Lab: Due to the tendency of alchemy to produce noxious fumes, harmful vapors, and dangerous explosions, the alchemy labs are located on the surface of the mesa, far away from the main centers of trade and commerce. There is also a small wing of guest labs that the clan's other scientists frequently borrow for experiments in chemistry, which is not as innately hazardous as alchemy but has its perils nonetheless.

The First Level

Life in the Lightning flight is all about hard work and scientific discovery, and in this respect the Suncircle is no different from any other clan in the Shifting Expanse. Most of the clan's laboratories are located on the first level, and visiting scientists are often invited for tours.
  • Research and Development: The clan's R and D lab is presided over by Hanyi, a slightly temperamental Imperial who is a gifted researcher and has earned his position as Head Scientist many times over. Responsible for developing new projects and focuses, the R and D lab manages a small but elite think tank and collaborates with the Suncircle's other labs to make sure that goals and objectives are met.
  • Augments Lab: The Augments Lab was founded by Arctos, a Wind dragon who pioneered the development of bionic augments and prosthetics to improve the quality of life of her injured and disabled clanmates. Her mate, Cinder, helps her with her creations, which frequently need to be customized to meet the specific needs of each individual.
  • Electromagnetism Lab: A holdover from a more loyalist period in the Suncircle's history, the Electromagnetism Lab is a small but important department that focuses its attention on the study of electricity - what it is, how it works, and what it can be used for. The technicians in this lab are highly trained in their specialty, and are considered the best of the best. Visitors to the lab will be dazzled by a wide variety of newfangled findings on electricity's uses and purposes - all for the best, since dazzled visitors rarely ask too many questions.
  • The Library: Sincerus presides over the clan's library, which holds a number of carefully-curated books on the sciences, the arts, and on the history of Sornieth. If a visitor is polite and asks nicely, Sincerus will happily show them his personal collection of translated literature and poetry from the Beastclans, as well as a small collection of relics predating the Third Age. A section of books on magic and ritual are kept separate from the rest of the volumes, and are frequently perused by the mages that reside in the Suncircle.
  • The Sun Stone: Located on a ledge adjoining the library, the Sun Stone is a glowing pillar of Sacridite that was unearthed in the construction of the lair. It was left where it was found, supported by a ledge, as the rest of the mesa was hollowed out around it. Open to the air, it shimmers with golden light whenever the sun's rays hit it. The Sun Stone is the dominion of the clan's mages, particularly Apollon, and is wrapped in layers of enchantments to protect it from physical and magical attack. Used in many spells and rituals, its importance to the clan's mages have led it to be used as an important meeting site where they can gather in peace. Even those who dislike each other's magical specialties and rituals will put aside their differences in this space.

The Second Level

Many of the clan's residents live on the second level, which consists primarily of sleeping quarters, communal areas, and other facilities essential for group living. Privacy is often somewhat lacking on this level, and for this reason the clan's unmated dragons live here, reserving more secluded space for paired couples. There are several open-air entrances to the second level, so that dragons can come and go more easily. The digging of these extra passages was a contentious subject because of the security risk they pose; for this reason, they are heavily guarded, and many of the clan's warriors live in burrows nearest the access tunnels.
  • The Common Room: This massive, open chamber is supported by stone pillars that hold up the roof while also amplifying sounds from above and below. The Common Room is the largest underground gathering space in the clan, and is frequented by dragons who want to socialize but don't want to do so on the surface of the mesa. During sandstorms, dragons frequently congregate here for games, musical performances, storytelling, and good old-fashioned chitchat.
  • The Sleeping Burrows: Extending off the sides of the Common Room are a series of communal sleeping burrows. Most of the clan's young or single dragons reside in the communal burrows, which are spacious and comfortable even if they are somewhat less private than is considered ideal.
  • The Warriors' Caves: The second level is partially open to the air; this improves ventillation and makes the cave system more accessible, but it also leaves the clan more vulnerable to attack. As a security precaution, the warriors' communal burrows are located nearest to the open-air entrances. Warriors take turns standing guard during the night shift, and at least one sentry is always posted to keep an eye out for beastclans and rival dragons.
  • The Kitchen: Not all cooking is done aboveground. A small kitchen provides the more culinarily-inclined dragons of the Suncircle with a place to cook without leaving the comfort of the burrows. Best suited for the preparation of small meals, the kitchen is a popular stop with dragons looking to impress potential mates, who will showcase their culinary talent by presenting their beloved with a gift of food. Not all dragons are gifted chefs, however; fortunately, a ventilation pipe allows the smoke from any mishaps to escape into the open air.

The Third Level

The third level is considered the most secure place of residence in the clan, defended above by warriors and protected by the Cavern from below. For this reason, many of the clan's essential resources are guarded here. Sleeping burrows for mated pairs, diplomats, and refugees are also located on this level, where their residents are more protected than they would be elsewhere.
  • The Burrows: Reserved for mated pairs and important diplomats, space in the Burrows is at a premium due to the limited real estate available underground. The privacy of these enclosed family chambers is highly desirable, and fierce competition occasionally arises over spots when vacancies open up.
  • The Nesting Grounds: The clan's communal nesting grounds are located on the third level and are guarded by Chiro, a confident and enthusiastic warrior who relocated from a long-lost Lightning clan. Four nests are spread throughout the chamber, surrounded by a mixture of comfortable pillows, couches, and lounges so that parents can remain with their eggs until they hatch. Once the eggs hatch, the children will generally return with their parents to their living quarters or be sent to the Nursery.
  • The Nursery: For hatchlings without family burrows to return to, the Nursery is a formative part of their early years. Presided over by a rotating contingent of nursemaids and teachers, the nursery is also where early childhood education takes place. Hatchlings from all walks of life can mingle here and are encouraged to do so. Many hatchlings go straight from the Nursery onto their new homes in other clans, although some of them do remain with the Suncircle.
  • The Treasury: Presided over by Sunbird, the Treasury holds the clan's material wealth in the form of treasure, gems, and precious metals. Since the clan is largely self-sufficient, resources have gradually accumulated over the years, providing ample funding for research. On the few occasions where the lair has been expanded, the Treasury's stores will be cleaned out almost completely; fortunately, the clan's bustling trade practices generally see a safe surplus restored within a few months.
  • The Storehouses: Disorganized and labyrinthine, the Storehouses are filled with just about anything that could interest a dragon - if they can find it. Garments, textiles, pottery, and other trinkets are haphazardly organized by category, but it's often impossible to find anything specific. Sometimes, young dragons will sneak into the Storehouses and go on adventure quests, hoping to find something rare or valuable that has been forgotten here. Horatio has been brought on to organize the cave, but it is unlikely that his work will ever be completely finished.

The Cavern

Located at the heart of the mesa, the Cavern is an enormous subterranean space hollowed out by groundwater long before the dragons of the Suncircle began to construct their lair here. Investigations into this geological impossibility led to the discovery of a natural fissure in the rocks through which water was able to seep; analysis and study in Hanyi's lab led to the conclusion that this water was coming from an underground branch of the Light river. Illuminated by a glittering combination of tiny strung lanterns and phosphorescent moss, the Cavern is a beautiful place - but its darkness conceals many secrets as well.
  • The Hydropower Plant: Construction of the Hydropower Plant was launched in the aftermath of the clan's great battle against the Ice Flight, and represents the culmination of Excursio's dream to make her clan self-sufficient. By carefully installing a series of small generators into the rock face, the Hydropower Plant captures the kinetic energy of the water trickling through fissures in the cave walls and harnesses it to generate electricity. The plant is guarded by Orion, the first Night Warrior, and its oversight and maintenance is considered the most important priority of the Cavern's residents.
  • The Hall of Echoes: A natural cave hollowed by the seepings of water through the soft rock, the Hall of Echoes is the sacred space of the Night Warriors. Passed down to them from their predecessors, the Midnight Crew, the walls of the cave are covered in intricate art and writing detailing the history of the Cavern and the dragons who call it home. Hall of Echoes contains the painted impressions of every Night Warrior hatchling who has ever been born in the Suncircle Clan. Induction ceremonies are conducted here as well, and it is the privilege and honor of newly-inducted Night Warriors to place their pawprints in a special space on the cave wall. Visiting Night Warriors from other clans are also invited to place their marks here.
  • The Lake: A vast, still body of water, the lake fills the bottom of the Cavern, covering everything but the cave's very edges. Water from the lake is seldom consumed by any but the Cavern's residents; it is claimed that it is bad luck for a dragon to drink water that has never seen the light of the sun. Strange blind fish and other cave creatures lurk in its depths, and swimming too far away from the shore is considered unwise.
  • Riftstalker's Island: Located near the far end of the cave, this island is artificially constructed from the rubble that remained from the construction of the hydropower plant. Its location was carefully chosen to mitigate the impacts of construction on the lake's delicate ecosystem, but it wasn't used for anything until Riftstalker joined the clan. The Spiral is one of the few dragons who regularly braves the icy depths of the lake's waters, and has convinced many of its stranger inhabitants to accept him as one of their own.
The Oasis

Located at the foot of the mesa, the oasis is a calm and tranquil spot that is mostly used as a spot for rest and relaxation. The ice-cold waters of the oasis seep from underground springs that arise from the same massive groundwater reservoirs as the lake. Baikal is the oasis' only permanent resident, although other dragons do help him with the care and maintenance of the resources here.
  • The Herb Garden: Herbs grown at the oasis are a critical component in the clan's medicines, rituals, and ceremonies. They grow better near the oasis than they do underground, and since the transportation of fresh herbs is somewhat difficult, Baikal prefers to cultivate herb supplies for the clan's use.

Lore Families and Subspecies

A number of large, prestigious, and powerful families make their home among the dragons of the Suncircle Clan. While some of these families had their origins on the mesa, others are the children of allied clans. If you're interested in learning more about the lore and rules of each project, please click the button at the bottom of each entry to be taken to the project's thread.

The Night Warriors

One of the largest families in Sornieth, the Night Warrior family tree is descended from Pulchrior, one of the Suncircle's oldest residents, and his mate Kidara. The Night Warriors of the Suncircle Clan are responsible for the defense of the clan's lower levels, particularly the Cavern, and serve as warriors, lair guards, magicians, and alchemists. The growth and prosperity of his large family is Pulchrior's Charge, and many of his descendants have spread to allied clans throughout Sornieth.

The Celestial Runners

The Dawnguard

Born from a fateful blood sacrifice, the founders of the Dawnguard family, Ithildin and Apollon, are dragons whose potent magic is passed down through rite and sacrifice. Members of the Dawnguard family are a breed apart, as the ritual that gives them their strong magic also ensures that they will be forgotten by all their living kin except for those who share the same enchantment.

Sales and Trading

Not all of the Suncircle's resources can be supplied from within the clan. Some goods and supplies must come from outside, and are frequently bought and traded for using the resources at the Suncircle's disposal. Gifts of these needed items are always met with appreciation by the residents of the Suncircle, and reciprocal gift exchanges make up an integral part of their alliances with other clans.
