[item=ambush] (I'm sorry. I'm so, so sorry D;) Day 100 jgschwuj Part III: "You mean. . . everyone fight?"Rikki asked nervously. Odyssey glanced up hopefully at her side, his eyes flashing with a sort of grim fierceness they'd never seen before in the young wildclaw's gaze. Jade shrugged. "We can use all the help we can get if we want to defeat that thing." She spat, jerking her head in the direction of the emperor. Rikki inched closer to the hatchlings, which each individual expressions unique to their personality. Ajax still hovered by his mother, his green eyes shut tight as he massaged his temples. Satira rocked back and forth beneath the shade of a tree, twitching nervously at the emperor's every move and muttering incoherent words under her breath. Hester crouched close to the ground, her eyes wide as she watched the still corpses resting on the ground. Fletcher seemed to be in the middle of a small, polite panic attack, his fur bushed up and eyes swelling in fear until he vaguely resembled a fluffy pear. "Everyone." August mused, as if contemplating the thought. "So what's the plan? Get everyone killed?" Jade glared at him so fiercely the skydancer flinched. "Of course not." She growled. "We each play to our strengths to help overwhelm it. Zaffer!" She snapped, whirling on the imperial. The dragon in question still had a gaping wound in his side, which was barely healed, even with the help of most of Dawn's potions. "Yes?" He croaked, his voice almost as hoarse as Seraph's. Jade continued without a second look at his scar. "I know you're sensitive about your magic, but it's probably the strongest weapon we've got. We'll need you to use it if we have any hope of defeating this thing." Zaffer looked sunsettled, squirming uncomfortably. Jade's gaze did not soften. Instead, she turned to Odyssey, Opal, and Myu, who immediately snapped into attention. "You three are probably our best fighters." Jade admitted, her expression unchanging. "Try and get as many hits in as possible once our magic-users distract it." Opal made a small squeaking sound in her throat, spooked by the sudden change in her clanmate. "Jade?" She asked timidly, shuffling her feet. "Will you fight too?" the green spiral blinked, momentarily taken off guard, letting her unflinching demeanor fall. "Of course." She murmured with her old voice, the one full of love and worry. "To. . . to defend my family." Then her metal mask flew up and the stranger with the green scales was standing there in place of Jade again, wearing a grim expression. "The sooner we get out there the better." The green spiral muttered darkly. "Wait until it gets a bit closer, and then we can-" She was cut off as a blurred white shape charged past her, nearly bowling the spiral over with a powerful sweep of it's wings. Odyssey threw himself out into the open and and soared into the sky with amazing speed, nimbly ducking Misthawk's head as it tried to snap him out of the air. Following the hatchling's example, Myu leaped out of the forest after him, lunging at the emperor's necks. His mouth snapped open and emitted an ear-splitting, lion-like roar, loud enough to rival that of the emperor itself. The guardian once again met his mark with trained accuracy, hooking his serrated claws into the gaps between the emperor's scales and tearing into it's scarce patches of exposed flesh with frightening viciousness. The emperor reared back, screeching in pain, nearly bowling Odyssey out of the air as he collided with one of their heads. The wildclaw nearly tumbled out of the sky, but managed to spread his wings and fasten his jaws around Sunstorm's antlers, swinging around with startling finesse and jumping clumsily onto her head, groping at the thick orange mane to keep himself from sliding off. Jade sighed, shaking her head. Wordlessly she spread her eight wings and took to the sky, nimbly coiling around the emperor's thrashing heads. Seraph fluttered to the brink of the forest, spreading his talons, as if he were ready to cast light at any moment. He glanced nervously at Zaffer, who was struggling to his feet. "Lie down." Aurora demanded, placing her talons on his shoulder. "Jade has been through. . . a lot. You're too hurt to keep on fighting." Zafer shook his head, hobbling over to firmly seat himself beside Seraph. "I won't be in the midst of the battle." He promised the coatl weakly. "Jade was right. My magic is the most powerful thing we can use." Aurora hesitated, leaning into his uninjured side. "But. . . it hurts you." She murmured quietly. Zaffer chuckled lightly. "It hurts all the time, Aurora." He reminded her gently. "I might as well use my magic to make sure no more of us die." Aurora didn't say anything. Zaffer managed to smile at her. "Just stay safe, and I'll be fine." Aurora huffed indignantly, the usual spark returning to her eyes. "I don't get it with you all!" She protested, ruffling her wings indignantly. "You're all risking your lives to save the clan. Two have died already for our protection. Two! And then I. . . I get a bit hindered and you refuse to let me fight!" She cried. Zaffer sympathetically met her eyes, slowly reaching for her talons. "You're not hindered, Aurora." He said softly in a voice so gentle he nearly quieted the coatl's rage. "You're carrying eggs. That's so much more than just being hindered." He blinked rapidly, and Aurora was slightly taken aback to find tears in his eyes. "I don't know what I'd do if anything happened to you. So please, stay safe." Zaffer continued in a low murmur. Aurora hesitated, clutching Zaffer's talons tightly. She nodded slowly. "Okay." She said finally, glancing up to meet his eyes. "But only if you don't go barging into any suicide missions yourself." Zaffer laughed, flicking his tail pleasantly. "Deal." He agreed, leaning forward and brushing his snout against hers. Behind the two dragons, Opal and August were exchanging frazzled, panicked words, constantly talking over head other. "August, shut up." Opal demanded loudly. The skydancer snapped his mouth shut obediently. Opal sighed gratefully and risked a small smile. "I know fighting's not your strong suit." She said, fitting a comforting hand over his shoulder. "You don't have to fight if you don't want to." "I-it's not that." August blurted. "I want to fight this time." He took Opal's talons off his shoulder and clasped them in his hands. "It just feels like I should. Everyone else is. Even Aster gave her life to keep the emperor's magic away from it." He inhaled deeply, gritting his teeth. Opal grinned at her mate, who didn't look intimidating whatsoever. "That's great!" She crooned enthusiastically, beaming toothily. "Just promise not to get yourself killed and we're good!" August scrunched his nose up. "That never seems to work." He remarked with a twinge of guilt. "But I'll try not to die anyways." Opal grinned and swatted his wing with hers, which was surprisingly painful, considering the nocturne's wing consisted of hard crystal. "Then let's go!" She insisted, grabbing the skydancer's talons and pulling him into the air. "The others need our help." The others did indeed need their help, but were struggling remarkably little. Odyssey had managed to claw a large portion of Sunstorm's mane out of her scalp, causing that particular head to jerk back in pain and thrash furiously, attempting to throw off this pest. She collided with the necks of her friends, who were very busy snapping and clawing at other circling dragons, throwing them off-balance. Jade had dealt far more damage than expected, blinding Misthawk and Rivermouth with expertly aimed slashes to their eyes. She coiled around the hatchling imperial's head, dizzying her, and nearly driving her into the ground by grabbing ahold of her wonky antlers and shoving them towards the earth. The hatchling screeched in protest, lashing out with it's claws. Jade spiraled away in a spurt of scarlet, her scales splattered with crimson streaks, no blood but her own. This did not deter the spiral whatsoever. Despite a deep gash in her cheek and several light claw marks across her rib cage and belly, all eight of Jade's wings were still beating, and so she continued to fight. Myu had severely damaged the necks, which now looked like a weird mural consisting of claw marks and century-old scars. Seraph occasionally sent out flashes of dazzling light, which seemed to catch the emperor off guard, allowing Myu or Jade or Odyssey to strike yet again. Then Opal soared in, raking her claws against Rivermouth's snout. He recoiled and snapped at the air, unable to see due to the scars crossing his eyes. August nervously followed, occasionally summoning a strong gust of wind that unbalanced the hulking creature. He even managed to land a hit on Misthawk's jaw. But despite the many attacks, the emperor was still fighting as strong as ever, showing no sign of weakening. It's hulking mass continued to screech and scream, thrashing wildly and causing more damage than it received. It didn't even seem to notice the repeated blows to it's body, simply resorting to brutally bashing it's opponents out of the air without a second thought. Two very small shapes surveyed the fight from afar, neither in the safety of the forest or the midst of the battle. "Maybe. . ." Arion started, surveying the scene with gradually rising panic. "Maybe if I hit it juuuust right, with a lightning bolt in the chest, then-" "How would you get close enough?" Lost asked, who had blatantly refused to use her shade magic. "Doesn't a bolt like that take a lot of energy and focus?" Arion's brow creased with worry. "Well, yeah, but if it worked, it'd all be worth it." He chirped excitedly. Lost still shook her head. "That thing doesn't have a heart." She reminded him. "It doesn't even have blood. Or a nervous system. How would a lighting strike take it down?" Arion tilted his head thoughtfully, searching for an excuse. "So maybe I can't kill it." He continued. "But I could really damage it that way! Maybe enough to disable it like Dawn said, or at least weaken it so the others will have a better chance." Lost sighed. "You can try." She muttered dryly. "I'll try to save your sorry tail if you nearly get yourself killed." She added darkly, feeling bitter jabs of guilt at remembering the two lives she had been unable to save. Arion cocked a grin at her. "Thanks." He teased, winking. Lost inexplicably blushed, trying to hide the color of her scales beneath her hood. Arion was unable to hide his own gleeful grin as he turned away, zipping into the air with quick energetic wingbeats. He coiled through the sky like a graceful water serpent, feeling energy hum to life in between his talons. Inhaling deeply, Arion threw his mouth open, a wad of pent-up electric energy bursting from between his teeth in a blaze of crackling electricity. It struck the emperor right in the chest before dying away, leaving the beast stunned and stumbling around. Arion could feel the energy drained out of him like water from a pool, leaving him limp and exhausted, suspended in midair. Suddenly the emperor lurched forward, unable to contain the screaming pain emitted from it's multiple mouths, or control it's many muscular limbs. As the emperor limped towards Arion, nearly smacking him out of the sky with it's flailing claws, the blue spiral felt cold claws curl around his shoulders and he was pulled straight out of the air and into darkness and overwhelming cold. Arion felt warm air stirr against his scales moments later when he and Lost were thrust back into reality, still humming with adrenaline. "What'd I tell you?" The pearlcatcher muttered, her brow furrowing skeptically. "Bad. idea." Arion goraned, burrowing his head in his hands. "I just made it more mad." He muttered guiltily. Lost rolled her eyes. "I think it noticed." She remarked, waving her talons at the shape that was now sending smaller shapes scattering like leaves in the wind. "We should get back to camp before Rikki notices we're gone." "Yes, camp. Good idea." Arion agreed miserably, trailing after Lost as she began marching back towards the inviting canopy of the forest. In the air, Jade was still circling, keeping a keen eye for anyone else who remained in danger. "August, Opal!" She barked at the two dragons struggling to get past the writhing mass of heads and limbs. "Hurry up!" Opal gritted her teeth and tilted her nose at the ground, falling into a dive. Twisting around, she narrowly avoided Rivermouth's vibrant blue claws, glistening with dragon blood, before spreading her wings and soaring to freedom. She righted herself in the air, searching frantically for her mate, still lost in the storm of bodies. August caught her eye, drawing back to mimic the maneuver Opal had just pulled off. But as he dove, the emperor's talons soared through the air and caught him smack in the chest, flinging August away with the force of a catapult. It knocked all the air out of the skydancer's lungs and carved a deep, bleeding gap in his chest, bleeding even as he was flung helplessly through the sky. Opal yelped and darted forward, catching her flailing mate in midair. With the extra weight, the two of them lightly tumbled to the ground, Opal scrambling for the forest with August in tow. The emperor made to follow them, all of it's teeth bared in four horrible grimaces. Then a massive, shining sheet of pink light popped into existence in front of it, which the emperor collided with head-on. The creature recoiled, howling in pain. The shield faded away, but as the emperor approached once more, it sprang up again, forcing the massive zombie dragon back with another yelp of pain. "Thanks Zaffer." Opal breathed, her eyes glistening with tears as she nodded thankfully to the imperial. "I. . . I know it's painful for you." Zaffer smiled, but said nothing. Instead he turned his attention to the skydancer bleeding onto the forest floor, dying slowly with long, agonizing breaths. August was panting heavily, his chest heaving and bleeding profusely as his eyes became unfocused and misty, slowly growing numb to the pain. "Don't you dare die on me now, idiot." Opal snarled just above his head, her voice hitched with tears. August vaguely felt Dawn rush up to his side and heards the unmistakable clatter of potion bottles as she rummaged around in her bag. Prying his mouth open with desperate claws, Dawn tipped some vibrant yellow contents into his mouth, which trickled down his throat with a sweet, fruity taste and an overwhelming sense of relief. August felt someone's start wrapping a bandage around his chest to stem the bleeding, but he was barely conscious enough to feel thankful. After another potion forced down his throat, red this time, with more of a taste of artificial fruit juice, the blurry form of Dawn finally sat back, sighing with relief. "He's going to live." She said softly, an unfathomable amount of relief filling her voice. Opal gasped with joy, falling to the ground at August's side. The nocturne grabbed her mate's talons tightly and clasped them in her own, breaking shakily. A faint smile crept over August's face just as unconsciousness caught up to him, and he fell into a blissful world of quiet darkness, Opal still clinging to his claws. ------ @AmberHive @mayanaz @Spottedleaf125 @Skyeset @Moon314 @WildRose42 @PrussianWizards @CleverDual @Firedawn @Dragondreamer @Shadow104 @ScaledBookworm @LuminusPrime @CrAZDragon @DragonMist @Shadowhunter43 @Digimon11 @Avu42 @MythicalMemeLord @Vyxen @VioletEevee @Verdant @Sanddollar @Faolyn @Bluebirdi3 @ThornOfStorm130 @ObsidianMage @TropicalDiamonds @fenshae @Birdleap18 @SpiceCookie @Catkidemma @WOF2012 @Chbosser @L1llysage HNNNNNGGG I'M SORRY GUYS I COULDN'T KILL HIM *throws self at mercy* Please forgive me ;v;

"You mean. . . everyone fight?"Rikki asked nervously. Odyssey glanced up hopefully at her side, his eyes flashing with a sort of grim fierceness they'd never seen before in the young wildclaw's gaze. Jade shrugged. "We can use all the help we can get if we want to defeat that thing." She spat, jerking her head in the direction of the emperor.

"I-it's not that." August blurted. "I want to fight this time." He took Opal's talons off his shoulder and clasped them in his hands. "It just feels like I should. Everyone else is. Even Aster gave her life to keep the emperor's magic away from it." He inhaled deeply, gritting his teeth. Opal grinned at her mate, who didn't look intimidating whatsoever.

"That's great!" She crooned enthusiastically, beaming toothily. "Just promise not to get yourself killed and we're good!" August scrunched his nose up. "That never seems to work." He remarked with a twinge of guilt. "But I'll try not to die anyways."

Opal grinned and swatted his wing with hers, which was surprisingly painful, considering the nocturne's wing consisted of hard crystal. "Then let's go!" She insisted, grabbing the skydancer's talons and pulling him into the air. "The others need our help."

The others did indeed need their help, but were struggling remarkably little. Odyssey had managed to claw a large portion of Sunstorm's mane out of her scalp, causing that particular head to jerk back in pain and thrash furiously, attempting to throw off this pest. She collided with the necks of her friends, who were very busy snapping and clawing at other circling dragons, throwing them off-balance.

Jade had dealt far more damage than expected, blinding Misthawk and Rivermouth with expertly aimed slashes to their eyes. She coiled around the hatchling imperial's head, dizzying her, and nearly driving her into the ground by grabbing ahold of her wonky antlers and shoving them towards the earth.

The hatchling screeched in protest, lashing out with it's claws. Jade spiraled away in a spurt of scarlet, her scales splattered with crimson streaks, no blood but her own. This did not deter the spiral whatsoever. Despite a deep gash in her cheek and several light claw marks across her rib cage and belly, all eight of Jade's wings were still beating, and so she continued to fight.

Myu had severely damaged the necks, which now looked like a weird mural consisting of claw marks and century-old scars. Seraph occasionally sent out flashes of dazzling light, which seemed to catch the emperor off guard, allowing Myu or Jade or Odyssey to strike yet again.

Then Opal soared in, raking her claws against Rivermouth's snout. He recoiled and snapped at the air, unable to see due to the scars crossing his eyes. August nervously followed, occasionally summoning a strong gust of wind that unbalanced the hulking creature. He even managed to land a hit on Misthawk's jaw.

But despite the many attacks, the emperor was still fighting as strong as ever, showing no sign of weakening. It's hulking mass continued to screech and scream, thrashing wildly and causing more damage than it received. It didn't even seem to notice the repeated blows to it's body, simply resorting to brutally bashing it's opponents out of the air without a second thought.

Two very small shapes surveyed the fight from afar, neither in the safety of the forest or the midst of the battle. "Maybe. . ." Arion started, surveying the scene with gradually rising panic. "Maybe if I hit it juuuust right, with a lightning bolt in the chest, then-"

"How would you get close enough?" Lost asked, who had blatantly refused to use her shade magic. "Doesn't a bolt like that take a lot of energy and focus?" Arion's brow creased with worry. "Well, yeah, but if it worked, it'd all be worth it." He chirped excitedly.

Lost still shook her head. "That thing doesn't have a heart." She reminded him. "It doesn't even have blood. Or a nervous system. How would a lighting strike take it down?" Arion tilted his head thoughtfully, searching for an excuse.

"So maybe I can't kill it." He continued. "But I could really damage it that way! Maybe enough to disable it like Dawn said, or at least weaken it so the others will have a better chance." Lost sighed.

"You can try." She muttered dryly. "I'll try to save your sorry tail if you nearly get yourself killed." She added darkly, feeling bitter jabs of guilt at remembering the two lives she had been unable to save.

Arion cocked a grin at her. "Thanks." He teased, winking. Lost inexplicably blushed, trying to hide the color of her scales beneath her hood. Arion was unable to hide his own gleeful grin as he turned away, zipping into the air with quick energetic wingbeats. He coiled through the sky like a graceful water serpent, feeling energy hum to life in between his talons.

Inhaling deeply, Arion threw his mouth open, a wad of pent-up electric energy bursting from between his teeth in a blaze of crackling electricity. It struck the emperor right in the chest before dying away, leaving the beast stunned and stumbling around. Arion could feel the energy drained out of him like water from a pool, leaving him limp and exhausted, suspended in midair.

Suddenly the emperor lurched forward, unable to contain the screaming pain emitted from it's multiple mouths, or control it's many muscular limbs. As the emperor limped towards Arion, nearly smacking him out of the sky with it's flailing claws, the blue spiral felt cold claws curl around his shoulders and he was pulled straight out of the air and into darkness and overwhelming cold.

Arion felt warm air stirr against his scales moments later when he and Lost were thrust back into reality, still humming with adrenaline. "What'd I tell you?" The pearlcatcher muttered, her brow furrowing skeptically. "Bad. idea."

Arion goraned, burrowing his head in his hands. "I just made it more mad." He muttered guiltily. Lost rolled her eyes. "I think it noticed." She remarked, waving her talons at the shape that was now sending smaller shapes scattering like leaves in the wind. "We should get back to camp before Rikki notices we're gone."

"Yes, camp. Good idea." Arion agreed miserably, trailing after Lost as she began marching back towards the inviting canopy of the forest. In the air, Jade was still circling, keeping a keen eye for anyone else who remained in danger. "August, Opal!" She barked at the two dragons struggling to get past the writhing mass of heads and limbs. "Hurry up!"

Opal gritted her teeth and tilted her nose at the ground, falling into a dive. Twisting around, she narrowly avoided Rivermouth's vibrant blue claws, glistening with dragon blood, before spreading her wings and soaring to freedom. She righted herself in the air, searching frantically for her mate, still lost in the storm of bodies.

August caught her eye, drawing back to mimic the maneuver Opal had just pulled off. But as he dove, the emperor's talons soared through the air and caught him smack in the chest, flinging August away with the force of a catapult. It knocked all the air out of the skydancer's lungs and carved a deep, bleeding gap in his chest, bleeding even as he was flung helplessly through the sky.

Opal yelped and darted forward, catching her flailing mate in midair. With the extra weight, the two of them lightly tumbled to the ground, Opal scrambling for the forest with August in tow. The emperor made to follow them, all of it's teeth bared in four horrible grimaces. Then a massive, shining sheet of pink light popped into existence in front of it, which the emperor collided with head-on.

The creature recoiled, howling in pain. The shield faded away, but as the emperor approached once more, it sprang up again, forcing the massive zombie dragon back with another yelp of pain. "Thanks Zaffer." Opal breathed, her eyes glistening with tears as she nodded thankfully to the imperial. "I. . . I know it's painful for you."

Zaffer smiled, but said nothing. Instead he turned his attention to the skydancer bleeding onto the forest floor, dying slowly with long, agonizing breaths. August was panting heavily, his chest heaving and bleeding profusely as his eyes became unfocused and misty, slowly growing numb to the pain.

"Don't you dare die on me now, idiot." Opal snarled just above his head, her voice hitched with tears. August vaguely felt Dawn rush up to his side and heards the unmistakable clatter of potion bottles as she rummaged around in her bag.

Prying his mouth open with desperate claws, Dawn tipped some vibrant yellow contents into his mouth, which trickled down his throat with a sweet, fruity taste and an overwhelming sense of relief. August felt someone's start wrapping a bandage around his chest to stem the bleeding, but he was barely conscious enough to feel thankful.

After another potion forced down his throat, red this time, with more of a taste of artificial fruit juice, the blurry form of Dawn finally sat back, sighing with relief. "He's going to live." She said softly, an unfathomable amount of relief filling her voice.

Opal gasped with joy, falling to the ground at August's side. The nocturne grabbed her mate's talons tightly and clasped them in her own, breaking shakily. A faint smile crept over August's face just as unconsciousness caught up to him, and he fell into a blissful world of quiet darkness, Opal still clinging to his claws.
