Appearance:The Mammertee, and its subspecies the Kelp Tender, are the magically-enhanced descendants of the Second Age manatee species. Both creatures look very much like primordial manatees, having front flippers and a single-edged horizontal tail fin. Differences arise on the finer details. Both species have two pairs of front flippers, a thick, whiskered upper lip which hangs down over the lower lip, and both types possess a pair of short tusks and a pair of keratin horns. The tusks are primarily used for feeding, it is the horns that are used offensively.
Their coloration ranges brown to gray, their backs are striped or mottled to blend in with light filtering through the surface of the ocean. When seen from overhead, herds can appear like slowly moving boulders. Their underbellies are lighter in color, and range from cream to dusty white in a pattern called countershading.
Combat: Mammertee aren’t very efficient at combat. They are slow-moving, slower-witted creatures with no natural weapons and little combat inclination. Aside from their short tusks, they have blunt teeth, but these are used for chewing aquatic vegetation, not for biting at enemies. During mating season, though, a male might take offense at anyone coming too close to him or his harem, and will lunge at the intruder to crush them with its own huge body and attempt to scratch and slash at them with their lower nasal horn. Since mammertee are not speedy, their scratch deals 179 damage ordinarily and 358 in the event of a critical hit. A shred deals 184 damage regularly and 368 with a critical hit, additionally, they will induce the Bleed effect in the target, which does an additional 61 damage or 122 damage if a critical hit was given for the following 3 turns.
Habitat/Society: Mammertee in the wild are most often found in the waters along warm coastal areas. They stay close to shore, where the aquatic plants on which they feed are found, and often feed at night when its safer to forage near civilized areas. Mammertee stick to small family groups, a mated pair and their offspring or a bull attempting to maintain a harem of two females. During mating season, larger groups of mammertee often congregate together and males become much more hostile to intruders in their space.
As mammals, mammertee give live birth (a single young is born at a time), and the females produce milk. It is this milk for which the mammertee is prized. Many maren shoals have begun the practice of “ranching” mammertee, actively culling overly aggressive individuals and practicing animal husbandry on the more docile. Maren in the Kelp Bed regions manage small herds that are tolerant of their maren guardians and willingly follow them into areas that are not their natural habitat for protection and access to fresh grazing away from dragons.
Beastfolk: The mammertee is a source of many useful materials, the greatest being its milk. Mammertee milk is perfectly palatable (with a faint creaminess that allows weak yogurts and soft cheeses to be made if quantities are sufficient), and when combined with specific deep-water plants from magic-rich seamounts has the added benefit of allowing water breathing as a third level magic spell.
Marenfolk who drink Infused Mammertee Milk can breathe either air or water for the duration of the magical effect, which lasts a little less than an hour. For obvious reasons, this milk is highly prized by Marenfolk and other Beastclan races, allowing air-breathing races to hunt, fish, and explore underwater for extended periods of time and allowing the Maren to more effectively join the war against dragonkind. On the down side, mammertee milk spoils quickly and loses its magical properties after a day.
Dragonkind: The mammertee is a good source of meat and blubber. The meat is very tasty, tender and rich in nutrients from the animal’s largely slow-moving life and vegetarian diet. Their blubber is useful in the making of candles and lamp oils. Some artisan dragons use mammertee and kelp tender tusks for scrimshaw carving.
